Soon after I reached a platinum level at Choice hotels, I arrived fairly
late at a Comfort Inn in Stephenson, VA only to find my reserved King
NS room was not available. I had been downgraded into a two double bed
smoker, I walked next door and was able to pick up a room at the HI
Express. While the Comfort did allow me to cancel that room at 10:00
pm, when I wrote to the headquarters, I simply received a note stating
the were sorry, but sometimes the reserved rooms are not always available.

I'm now a platinum member of HI. That little event has has cost Choice
many stays over the past few years. Not that they likely care or even
notice, but they have definitely lost significant business due to their
service. Platinum stays at HI often results in an upgrade vs. a down
grade at Choice.

We stayed at a HI Express in Cleveland not too long ago. The room was dirty,
the tub took 2 hours to fill etc. We received no refund partial or
otherwise after complaining. They won't get our business again.

A few times I have arrived at a Holiday Inn in the morning to be told
no rooms were ready. Showing the card sometimes makes them available
immediately of within 30 minutes. Once I was told it would be 20-30
minutes and the desk clerk gave me a coupon for breakfast.

You can always dispute the credit card charge. At the very least
they have to address your complaints.

Stayed at the Econolodge in Holland MI last weekend. I was traveling
by myself and was booked into a two double bed room. I went out the
following morning and returned at 11 PM. My room was never serviced.
I called the front desk with complaints and they told me that since I
was a "single" I only would get room service every OTHER day. Never
heard of such a practice.

To take away from the HOTEL thread for a post...

I've had nothing but good cars and great service from GM. I've owned 4 GM
vehicles. A 2001 Saturn Sl1, A 1996 Pontiac Sunfire, a 1993 Chevy Cavalier
and an 1989 Pontiac Tempest.

In each case I have purchase from a GM dealer (3 year old used although the
Sunfire might have been only 2 years old). I don't recall any of these
dealers putting in ticky-tack fees on my invoice.

Maybe I'm lucky.

I found the three different Goodwrench locations I dealt with over the last
15 years friendly fair and honest. I've never had a complaint to make about
GMAC. They took payments when they said they would, held their end of the
financing, never complained when I paid my financing off early, and in every
single case GMAC informed my insurance provider that I had indeed paid off
my loans. I buy them used at around 60 K km and sell around 190 K km. I
drive about 40 000 km every year. I usually only buy a 3 year old car.

The only major repairs were the abs computer and master cylinder (separate
occasions on the 93 Cavalier) and the transmission on the 96 Sunfire however
that may be due to my reckless driving on that vehicle, forgetting that it
was indeed a used vehicle. The tempest had flaking paint but what American
car didn't in the late 80's early 90's. The Macpherson struts were giving
out on the 93 caviler coupe at 197 K km but I sold that car for $1200 to a
father for his college son. Seems to me I had issues with the dashboard
lights on the Saturn burning out one at a time but it was more annoance than
anything else.

I presently drive a 2004 Sebring Limited. I have had this car for 6 months
now. I've already replaced the sway bar on this vehicle but this is an
issue with Chryslers. It's powerplant is more reliable than a GM and more
peppy and the sound system better than GM's. However It's not as nice to
steer or brake as a GM and it lacks features that the Malibu v6 LTZ would
have such as 6-way power seats, heated mirrors and heated seats and climate
control which all come on the Malibu.

At the time I was paying cash for the car so I took this Sebring cause it
was the last 2004 Sebring ont he lot at a high volume Chrysler dealer. I
had priced out 6 Malibu's over a 3 month period previous to the Sebring and
the Sebring saved me 1500 bucks. The chyrlser dealer gave me a very hard
time for buying a car for cash and the sales manager would not negotiate
with me for the first 45 minutes because I stated that I would pay cash (in
this case a certified cheque from my bank) instead of finance. This is the
first time I have purchased a car for cash and not finance. Maybe this is
standard practise. I was prepared to purchase a 2007 Honda Civic for cash
but did not get my price, althought they gave me no hard time about paying
cash. I was sick of small little cars so I didn't buy the civic.

I will miss GM service and drivability for the next 160 000 KM of driving.

A few years ago I stayed at a smaller motel for a week. On the third
day, the maid never showed up. No big deal, but I mentioned it at
checkout, when they asked me if everything had been satisfactory.
Didn't ask for any adjustment, but they credited the entire week's
charges and gave me a bill showing zero balance. I actually felt bad,
told them I'd be happy to pay for my stay, but they refused to take
anything.

I'm surprised they changed sheets at Econolodge.

Then again, you did only expect them to make the bed.

I love any of the Hilton chain hotels and have never had a problem with
them. My first budget choice is Embassy Suites (love the free breakfasts
AND Happy Hours!) and next comes Hampton Inn. If I'm feeling
particularly flush and get a good deal, the Hilton Hotel is my next pick.

I'm addicted to their beds and pillows. And I've never stayed at a quieter
hotel. Couldn't even hear doors slamming up and down the hall that I
usually hear.

You jogged my memory. I once stayed at an Econolodge and the toilet
was clogged. They said it could not be fixed so I insisted on another
room. They refused even though it was far from full. Only a threat to
call the local Department of Health convinced them to give me a
different room.

I hate, hate, HATE Embassy Suites on weekends. Kids running endlessly up
and down the halls screeching all night long. A maid told us it had become
popular to hold birthday/slumber parties as ES.

I've become addicted to Hampton Inns. They are the quietest hotels I've
stayed in.

Guess they've improved since I stopped staying at Hamptons - perhaps 10
years ago. Back then, I found them to be almost as noisy as Fairfield
Inns.

I find the newer HI Express locations (not the remodeled HI's) and
Courtyard to be my sweet spot for value / quietness & comfortable beds.

Marriott, Crowne Plaza, Embassy Suites, etc are arguably better, but
IMO, not worth their typical premium price.

Choice Hotels are so erratic, it's hard to make any blanket statement,
other than typically being the lowest cost hotel I now occasionally
consider. Some are quiet / comfortable & clean, but many are simply
dirty, run down and dumpy.

I avoid Econolodges like the plague. One particularly bad one was in
Cockeysville, MD. First I was assigned to a room where the bed was
missing and renovations were in progress (the front desk didn't KNOW
that?), then shown to a room where the shower on the 2nd floor leaked
down onto my toilet, and the a/c was a good substitute for a
jackhammer. I wrote to hdqtrs. to the effect that they should be
ashamed to have this establishment on their list - not a peep, as to
be expected. They are almost as bad as Knight's Inns.

I seek out Marriotts and newer Best Westerns. By the way, is there a
chain which isn't a franchise deal? I like Hilton Garden Inns too, but
they don't seem to be too great in number. HI Express - seem to cover
whole spectrum from bad to superb.

On the budget end I believe Motel 6 owns all their properties.
Sometimes you will find two nearby hotels that are pars of different
chains say, a Marriott and a Holiday Inn that have the same owner.

They have improved. I was stunned. Like you, I stopped using Hampton years
ago. I was at a conference and that was the hotel. I was apprehensive. It
was great. I've been staying at Hampton ever since.

But I should maybe give HI Express a try. Quiet is most important to me.

After a recent stay at the Hampton Inn near the Orange County Convention
Center in Orlando, I am a fan too. For the money, its hard to beat
Hampton Inn for what you get.

500 Million Customers A Multi-Billion Dollar Market

Currently there are around 60 million domain names registered
globally. Industry experts are predicting that in the next ten years,
more than 500 MILLION domain names and web sites will be active
annually.

Imagine if YOU could get a piece of this multi-billion dollar per year
global market, which will include ongoing annual domain renewals AND
the web based services utilized with each domain name. Most of the
good .com domains are already taken, but the .ws "Web Site" domain
Registry (GDI) has an unbelievable amount of the very best names still
available, and only GDI offers the opportunity for YOU to benefit from
the enormous residual revenues being generated.

Even before launching the amazing "Income for Life"(tm) program in June
of 2004, GDI achieved a five (5) year track record of incredible
success and currently maintains customers with annual renewals and web
services in more than 180 countries. Now it's YOUR CHANCE to cash in
on the huge demand for domain names and web services worldwide.

Dunno about your house, but mine has insulation in the "ceiling". All
the roof does, is shade that insulation in summer, and keep the rain/
snow off, and the attic is vented to get any humidity out in winter,
and the hot air out in summer. Venting the attic space properly is the
reasonable way to go.

If you are interested in earning some money online, do visit my blog
to see the ones I would recommend. Those programs are all free to
join. Note that these are not get-rich fast schemes.
