The way it was explained to me is that licenses can be transferred to
another machine, so long as the original machine is taken out of
service. That's all part of the validation program that's required to
get updates - it compares hardware profiles to activated licenses. If
it's been over 180 days since the original installation was activated,
you can reactivate online. If it's less time than that you have to
call a 800 number where they'll ask if the os has been removed from
the old computer before they give you an activation code. Of course
if the old machine reaches out to Microsoft for any reason it'll be
deactivated in favor of the newer installation. I guess it would be
possible to use two or more machines on one license so long as only
one is connected to the Internet, but what's the point?

This is roughly what I've done. I bought a "salvage" licence on a
machine that is out of service from my favorite used computer store. I
was asked if this was a clone, so I have the disk and the original
hologramy serial number off the old box. $35.

Dennis, here is where I'm at with the HDTV. Fry's had some specials.

Avermedia AverTVHD Volar ($9 after rebate)
BE-2300 AMD dual core (boxed with fan) with a ECS NFORCE6M MB - $58 -
no rebate
VisionTek X1550 with 512 of DDR2 ($39 after rebate)
2Gb DDR2 Corsair 800MHz ($35 after rebate)

I think that's all mid range stuff. The CPU is on the lower end of
current (3 Gig Intel dual core rough equivalent ~2 gig clock) but might
be hackable as it is a low power chip.

I think that should do 780P and 1080i. What do you think?

First check if you really need to get XP.
Go to the hardware vendor's web site and see if they
have a driver for Win2000 available for download.

That's sort of an apples and oranges comparison. Not just the OS is
different but also the hardware. Even if the desktop hardware was fine,
it could easily be that a device driver for the desktop hardware was
buggy, causing crashes. Since the laptop would have different devices
(almost entirely -- different motherboard chipset, different video card,
etc., etc.) you wouldn't be running the same device drivers on the
laptop as on the desktop.

As much as I despise Microsoft[1], I have to credit them with finally
developing a stable operating system that doesn't really crash unless
something other than the operating system is faulty. XP is basically
stable. Vista may be stable as well, but I think if you had problems
with XP, it might not have been XP itself, but some other related issue.

Jeez, that's as low as the folks who cut pages out of library books
just to save a dime at the photocopier.

It's time like that I take comfort from reading "the classics"
knowing that even in Dante's Inferno,
there are really low rings of hell reserved for such acts
if they don't get some Greek torture first (such as Syssafus, Tantalus, etc.)

"No thanks" sometimes results in the salesman offering a better price. The
Circuit City guy cut the price 3 times on a 19" TV, but we still didn't buy
the warranty and the TV is still working fine 10 years later.

That happened to me. The shithead company had some lame excuse, so Fry's

My Kenmore fridge just broke, it was only 5 years old. There goes $800.

It fell to a broken compressor, which apparently is the #1 cause of
fridge death. Why don't they make it easier to replace the compressor?
Shouldn't be that much harder than replacing the power steering pump on
my car, should it? But apparently it is, everybody says just throw it out.

The companies think they are getting off scot free because their
warranties are short, but I tell you, I'm never buying an expensive
fridge with a fancy fascia or features, so long as they put short-lived
mechanicals in them. Neither will I spend more blindly hoping to get
what I pay for. I would pay a couple hundred extra for something with a
10 year warranty though.

A fridge is a relatively simple device. The only moving part is the
compressor so it's not remarkable that this is the part that fails.

I imagine replacing the compressor isn't any more difficult than
replacing the air conditioning compressor in a car. You'll probably
need to do the same purge and recharge of the freon (or whatever they
use these days).

What broke in your compressor? They have been around for ages and
there are no design features to tweak anymore that can screw up its
reliability.

The only problem I can think of is your fridge was transported to your
home lying on its side. That position can cause the compressor to pop
out of its spring mounting. There are four springs that position the
compressor in the middle inside the canister. If one mount (friction
fit rubber grommet) popped free you will hear a clunk everytime the
compressor starts or stops as the mounting is unbalanced. Over time
that flexes the electrical cable and fractures it resulting in a short
circuit. Its not repairable.

I'm already 1 month behind on my credit cards. I've suffered a few
setbacks (business/job related)and catching is possible but difficult
(I run a "seasonal" business, we slow down, but still work, in the
winter). If they would allow my next (normal, single payment, instead
of having to make 2) payment to make me "current", I think I can make
it (I should be able to pay off/down all these cars by Aug. 2008) and
keep my credit in decent shape.

How should I approach them, I don't want them to panic and close the
accounts, but like many Americans (who have been effected by the
downturn in the economy) I need a little help.

Funny, when I do stuff like that, what I usually get back is a blank stare.

Personally, my theory is just to count the change that I get back. It's
not hard. It's certainly not any harder than paying with exact change.
In fact, the cash register usually tells them how much change to give you
back, and usually the problem is that they don't count it out right. So
you already can look at the screen and see the total amount of you're
supposed to get back (assuming they entered everything correctly).

Of course, there is also the matter of being charged the wrong amount
in the first place (items rung up wrong, rung up twice, etc.). That's
often harder to track since you often several items and there's more
information to keep track of.

How much money do they spend on gas going to the bank to get the rolls
of paper?

These days, if you have something like $10 or $20 or less in change, the
Coinstar machine makes a lot of sense solely in terms of saving a trip
and thus saving gas money. If your car gets 20 mpg in town, and if your
bank is 5 miles out of the way (times 2 for a round trip), you're using
a half gallon of gas, and thus about $1.50, just getting to the bank.

Of course, this is all based on the assumption that you're not already
going to the bank. I tend not to go to an actual bank branch because I
can do 99% of everything I need from an ATM across the street from where
I live. If you go to the bank regularly, the whole picture changes.

(By the way, if the kids really do learn something about money, it could
be worth it even if the parents lose a little on the deal. In the long
run, for some people the best thing they could possibly do for frugality
is to teach their kids to be smart with money. If they don't, they might
end up shelling out a lot to get their kids out of a bind here and there.)

Same thing applies at the self-checkout at my local grocery store. I try
to only insert $2 or $3 worth of change if people are waiting behind me.
I know if enough people abuse the thing and cause a big delay for everybody,
eventually they'll modify the machines so they don't accept pennies anymore.

Limiting yourself to $2 or $3 isn't a problem in practice: if you do it
pretty regularly, you will end up using all your change. There have been
a few stretches of maybe a month where I've had less than $2 or $3 in
change in the entire world (probably including couch cushions) due to
dumping the excess at the self-checkout machine.

There's a P-C service/dealer here; they were able to get the nail head
out while I was there, but when the tech tried to test it, it just blew
air and didn't fire. He said it was probably an O-ring, should be ready
tomorrow. I don't think it'll be much. Relax, that nailer decked half
of the floor and all of the roof of a Habitat for Humanity house; it's
probably due for some work.

Well, you've totally stolen my idea, except my thought was to just
wait a week or two. Then you're still in the Christmas frame of mind
somewhat, and the kids (if any) don't have to wait as long. (Kids can
be a tad bit impatient, especially when it comes to Christmas gifts!)
The after-Christmas sales only last a few days anyway, so if you are
organized, you can get all your shopping done in maybe a week.

I've actually (jokingly) suggested this to my family already, but nobody
seemed to go for the idea. I guess we're all fairly traditional when
it comes to Christmas.
