Leicester Square - 9/Feb/1998

In February 1998 I spent some time in Leicester Square, in the West End
of London. This is a very busy area of London, and one which can be relied
on to produce "contacts". Capital Radio's offices and their cafe are
located here, the Trocadero is nearby, and the place is full of cinemas
and entertainment venues.

Certainty level: 100%

A young girl is heard to say, "Alright I'm going to talk to myself" to her
friends, followed by all of them laughing together, as I passed by.

Believe me, I do not look mad in real life, these young people would not
have directed their comments and laughter at me unless they had already
been told by others that I was ill. I am absolutely certain that their
behaviour was directed at me, and this audio file is particularly clear.

Certainty level: 60%

This one was recorded in a cafe in Green Park. Two women are talking to
each other, one of them says to the other, "something wrong with him",
with an emphasis on the "wrong".

The words "something wrong with him" have been repeated at me dozens of
times, at my former workplace in Canada, in England, etc. The words are
quite deliberately chosen to have two meanings; they obviously imply that
I am ill, without forcing the abusers to demean themselves by using
more pejorative terms, although they have shown that they have no
compunction in that area; and secondly, the words "wrong ... him" make
me at fault, and place the guilt for the abusers' wrongdoing on my
shoulders.

Certainty level: 30%

Recorded on a Victoria line tube train leaving Green Park station.
If you listen carefully you can pick up the word "hunchback". The speaker
had emitted a swear word immediately before this excerpt; both the swear
word, and the "hunchback", were (I believe) directed at me.

Thanks- that is cheap enough to be plausible. I'll add it to my 'toys to
buy' list. (At that price point, I'm sure it isn't lab or milspec
quality, but as long as it shows hot or cold spots, that is all that
really matters.)

Interesting- a 'Red Green' solar eclipse/welding viewer. Too bad my toy
digital doesn't have a protruding lens. I'll have to stare at my digital
camera and my box of old odd fittings from my collection of 'real' (aka
film) cameras and see if anything jumps out at me.

Maybe make one big enough to hold entire camera, with a tripod screw on
the bottom, and a drape to go over by head, like on an old plate camera?....

Another cheap alternative, *IF* you have a 35mm film camera (not digital) is
to buy some infrared film and take pictures. Have to wait until they're
back from developing, but not too bad. Google '35mm infrared film'.

Now that one I was aware of, and I do have a plethora of good 35mm
cameras. I'd have to special-order the film, however, and I'd be
surprised if I could only order a single roll, or even a few. Most
stores around here no longer carry 35mm, other than preloaded in
disposable cameras.

Hey, that is a market niche for somebody to exploit- have some company
that makes store-brand disposables do a production run of ones loaded
with IR film, package them with instructions and a prepaid processing
envelope, and sell them in the insulation and weatherstripping aisles at
the big-box stores. (If anybody out there makes a go of that, I want a
cut of the profits...)

I can see it now- thousands of DIYs out there at midnight in winter
coats, taking pictures of there houses, while the neighbors call in
prowler reports... :^/

Or just get an IR thermometer for about $50. I recommend the mini temps,
most have a laser pointer so you can see where you are reading the
temperature. You'll just scan the house and you'll see the actual
temperature on the readout. You won't get the big picture, but you'll
get the job done for a lot less. Mine (Raytek MT4) has an 8 to 1 beam
spread (1' circle at 8' distance, or 1" at 8") but you can get them
tighter. Don't go broader.

You can look for gaps in insulation or even air leaks around doors.
Highly usefull.

Barely at all.

With any make your own washer, use demineralized water or else you'll
start getting buildup in the hoses.

Listen to this man. I went through this twice (on two different cars)
before I finally figured out what was going on. On the first car, I
believe the entire pump had to be replaced. On the second, the spray
nozzles that are mounted in the hood is what had to be replaced. I
went to the Toyota dealership and got OEM parts, but they did not fit
quite right, and more importantly, the water sprayed too far[1], so
in order to hit the windshield (rather than the top of the car or the
trunk), I had to tap the button repeatedly to get little spurts of
water.

All that could have been avoided had I bought distilled (or deionized
or filtered) water. And distilled water will probably clean better
anyway: since it has essentially nothing dissolved in it, it picks up
water-soluble stuff pretty well.

BA984 LHR->TXL 13/June/1998

Certainty level: 100%

In June 1998 I travelled on the above British Airways flight to Berlin
with my mother, to visit her family. There were two women in seats 30D/E,
about 4/5 rows behind us. It was quite obvious from the torrent of abuse
during these flight that these women had been instructed to harass me
and attempt to obtain a reaction.

I did manage to record much of the flight, but unfortunately much of the
recording is unclear because of high background noise on the aircraft.
The following three excerpts from the recording are the best I can do.

The segment at position 11:34 minutes on my recording contains a fairly
quiet word "paranoid", followed immediately by a much louder
"yeah, he's paranoid, yeah". During the flight the abuse was not sexual,
as it so often is elsewhere, but attacking my mental health.

One of the women in seats 30D/E said "paranoid" very clearly towards the
end of the flight, but unfortunately I had run out of minidisc space and
stopped recording by then. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that
these women were directed to harass me. This harassment happens without
fail on British Airways flights; I've been on something like three or
four BA flights in the last 5 years and it's happened each time.
Presumably this is because of international law which says incidents on
aircraft during flight are actionable in the airline's country of
origin - so my persecutors want a reaction from me, and they want to see
me "done" in the UK where they can influence the justice system.

These incidents never happen on foreign-domiciled carriers.

I called up my automated phone teller system at my credit union to
check on my account, yesterday, and found out my checking account had
almost no money left in it, when it was supposed to have about
$1,500.

Sure enough, a check for $1,500 had cleared about 5 days ago,
bringing the account down to near zero.

I sure didn't write the check for $1,500. It looks like a mistake
on the part of the credit union, or just plain fraud. The check
number was about 500 higher than my current check number.

Of course I found out on a weekend, and the credit union is closed
until Monday, so I get to stress out about it until Monday, at the
least.

The website for the credit union says each account is insured by the
FCUA (Federal Credit Union Assoc) for $100,000.

My question is whether the credit union will refund the $1,500 if
it is indeed fraud.

Thanks

Have you looked through your boxes of checks to see
whether any are missing around that number?

I would think so. It could end up being more than
$1500.00 if you count bounced checks.

It's not common knowledge but all the banks have huge departments just
to sort out the fraud that takes place like this. Sometimes that fraud
is coming from within the bank itself. I think it's more than
coincidence that whoever it was knew how to max out that withdrawal at
$1,500. The banks take an aggressive stand AGAINST the consumer in
these cases and assume that they are in on the fraud. Insist that they
credit your account immediately. Our news here has had segments where
they say that this type of fraud is more common when people use debit
cards as that acts on the checking account directly. People at the
store or people behind you in line have ways of accessing your
account. This is not the place to explain it, but it is a very simple
process to take money from your account. I never use my debit card,
only the credit card, which offers more protection in my view, and
cannot touch my checking account.

On a related note I keep getting calls from a blocked number with a
recording telling my I have pre-qualified for a loan and all I need to
do is enter my account number and routing info.
Remember, every person who handles your paper checks has this information.
The insurance you are taking about is protection in case the credit
union goes under.

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The quantity of Iranian bomb-making components
being found in Iraq is increasing despite a fall in attacks and 20
Iranian-trained agents are still operating south of Baghdad, a top
U.S. general said on Sunday.

Extensive Iranian influence in Iraq remained evident, said Major-
General Rick Lynch, despite signs of a possible easing of tensions
between Washington and Tehran over security in Iraq.

"Iranian influence is dominant at many levels," said Lynch, whose area
of command extends from Baghdad's southern suburbs south through Sunni
Arab insurgent strongholds to the major Shi'ite cities of Kerbala and
Najaf.

Lynch said his troops were chasing 20 "targets" he identified as Iraqi
Shi'ites who were agents for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps's
(IRGC) elite Qods Force.

"They were trained in Iran and they're conducting operations in our
battle space," Lynch told reporters. "They're Iraqis but they're IRGC
surrogates and they're still out there."

Lynch said in August that military intelligence suggested there were
about 50 IRGC troops in southern Iraq training Shi'ite militias in the
use of mortars and rockets.

His latest comments came despite an apparent softening of rhetoric by
U.S. officials in Baghdad towards Iran.

Washington accuses Tehran of arming, training and funding Shi'ite
militias in Iraq, charges Iran denies, but U.S. ambassador to Iraq
Ryan Crocker late last month noted several positive developments in
Iran's involvement in Iraq.

We have a second freezer, a chest freezer, that allows us to stock up
on during sales. In addition to the benefit on sales, it saves us
time/money on less frequent trips to the store.

Personally, we would not go with a side-by-side for a number of
reasons. One is the limited space on either side...some things are
just too large for a side-by-side. Second, we typically do not need
additional "refrigerator" space and a freezer alone is less expensive
than another combo unit (are you buying something from a yard sale or
a specific deal?). Typically, the higher-priced items that we would
want to buy in bulk are almost always freezable and if they're not,
they'd likely be too perishable to last additional time in a fridge.
You mentioned buying a side-by-side with an icemaker...why would you
need a unit with an icemaker?

We save quite a bit...we manage a spreadsheet of local grocers that
takes maybe 5 minutes/week to update (we only track what we buy
frequently) and we take advantage of the sales when they appear.
Interestingly, the spreadsheet has provided us with other information
such as trends in the cost of certain items so that if we see an item
historically rises during certain times of the year, we know when to
stock up or when to wait an extra week or two before buying it again.

The freezer that we bought was much larger than I had anticipated
buying, but it was a floor model that I could buy at the same price as
a much smaller unit so we did it and have not had any problems. When
not full, to maintain energy efficiency while we're waiting on a sale,
we simply fill plastic jugs with water and put them in the freezer to
maintain mass and lower the energy expenditure of the freezer itself.

People sometimes ask what happens if a storm knocks out power. In our
case, we lost power for 9 days last year following a early (and heavy)
snowstorm. Simply do not open the freezer more than necessary and the
mass of the contents should maintain temperature for at least a few
days, which should get you through most issues unless you're in a high-
risk zone like a hurricane path...in which case, just manage when you
might be likely to lose power and take the appropriate precautions.
In our case, we went 4 days before there was any indication of
temperature degradation on the surface of the freezer (we consumed
perishables first). The health resources were also commenting on the
radio that at that time, people had at least 3-4 days before they
needed to be concerned. Incidently, because we buy in bulk, the
actual cost of the contents was very low...surprisingly low. Keep in
mind that we buy frugally and if we do splurge, it is normally for a
treat that is consumed rather quickly. In your post, you indicated a
huge savings in salmon...but losing say, 10lbs, of salmon bought at
$1.99 is not as bad as 10lbs at $8.99.

It also depends on what your chances are of losing power for multiple
days vs. the benefits overall...or your insurance policy. A colleague
in the same storm reported to his insurance that he lost his freezer
contents and combined with his other loses (due to water damage), they
basically wrote him a check for the food.

Good Luck.
