TV news had a story of a fella that took a small car and
removed the engine and bolted an electric (DC) motor to the
transaxle. He could charge it with a 110 or 220 cord in a
few hours, for about 1/10th the cost of gasoline. He had
several hundred dollars in the conversion, but he only had a
20-25 mile range (45 mph max speed). Even in Dallas, that
would be very limiting. And I think it would be difficult
finding a place to "plug in" to make it back home. And with
no a/c, I think my bike would be more tolerable. Or a $3
all day bus pass ;-)

Back in '86 I had a Phoenix friend that did the same thing
with a compact stationwagon. He used an aircraft motor/
generator and recovered some power from braking. The back of
the wagon was stuffed with rebuilt car batteries that did
give him enough range to cover Phoenix. After a summer of
use, he gave it to one of the local universities.

Seems like a localized bio system might be usable.
Individually grow corn or sugar cane, something that has a
high energy per pound ratio. It would be a solar driven,
and even waste (stalks) could be used in winter for heating.
We can't beat the battle as long as it's based on
international pricing whims, all hydrocarbons are priced in
$ per therm now. Price set by traders on what they can make
you believe it's worth and how little is left. Enron was a
wakeup call, that type of manipulation is now international.

Nope, most obviously with power stations based on coal mines.

Nope, most obviously with power stations based on coal mines.

Several months ago when StarBux did the retraining shutdown,
local TV was interviewing the inconvenienced. One guy was
really upset because he had several hours of internet
business stuff to get done. The reporter asked about
missing the coffee and he said he never bought anything
there ;-)

I wouldn't disagree there.

True. Of course, one can have cheap warmth by wearing warmer clothes,
having better insulation, having a better designed home, making use of
ground heat, passive solar etc. It may well make sense to live in
medium or high density buildings where the capital costs of energy
efficiency can be spread across more users per area of space and where
each user demands less space. If this enables you to live closer to
work, then there's another energy saving.

The world is doomed. Pick almost anything and someone has predicted
that it will doom the world. Sooner or later, someone has to be right.
Perhaps we've been doomed already, several times.

Nope, not if we dont end up with doom.

We survived two world wars, the great depression
and countless other wars and we'll survive, you watch.

There are only two plausible choices in this election, given the
climate, the character and the tumultuous times we are living in. It
will either be President Clinton or President McBush. This is an
election where all the votes should be counted, it is not about
staging the biggest rally money can buy in Tampa, to claim victory
after a pathetic voter tally in Kentucky. This is an election, not a
Madonna concert, get real, get serious, cut the stage production and
count all the votes.

And if all the legal votes aren't enough to nominate the candidate you
want, change the rules until you do.

Remember, in Florida, voting booths will be stolen, tampered with and
"cloned", along witha lot of dead people voting.

No need with the new electronic voting machines. The vendor will
chose who you vote for, and save you the trouble. There is no paper
trail to challenge the results, so how can you prove who won?

Why surf? He isn't worth finding. With his comments like 'Typical

If I'm not mistaken, Obama took his name off the ballot (or never
petitioned to be on the ballot), respecting the rules of the DNC.
Hillary did not. How can a delegation representing those
circumstances be considered legit?

The crossover SUVs are very similar to minivans having front wheel
drive and based on a car's platform with unibody construction.

I am disappointed that there aren't any hybrid minivans being marketed
in the USA.

Before I retired, I biked to work when conditions were appropriate.
Now, I use the minivan to haul the bikes to some scenic bike trail.

Thanks Mark for replying!
Panoramic video means that you turn a camcorder around its axis during
recording.
The Color slow shutter mode does not turn automatically, but manually
only.
