TOPIC: Decorating Your Home With Room Dividers, Part 2

Using Room dividers is an excellent way to decorate your home while
also creating functional living spaces. This is part two of our two
part series...
Permanent Dividers
Permanent dividers make sense if you can commit yourself to a fixed
room arrangement for the foreseeable future. Low walls are relatively
simple to construct and you can finish and decorate them to match the
rest of the room. Alternatively, you can fit one side of the divider
with built-in shelving or cupboard space to provide additional
storage. Counters to screen the cooking and preparation areas of a
kitchen may need to be slightly higher to provide effective
concealment.
Half-width, as opposed to half-height, partitioning is also a
possibility. In a bedroom, a narrow partition at right angles to the
wall can separate a bed from a study alcove. On the study side, you
can add shelves for books and files.
Display shelves make effective dividers when you want to make a visual
distinction between areas but don't necessarily want to block views.
Sturdy storage units, open on both sides, are good for separating
living from dining areas and provide extra storage space for books and
knickknacks. Bear in mind that units must be sturdy enough to
withstand being toppled over if you accidentally knock into them.
Alternatively, you can construct an open wall of shelving that is
fixed securely to both the floor and ceiling....

i would say that if one has difficulty with one's 1.6 gal. toilet, one
should reacquaint oneself with <http://www.mypyramid.gov/> instead of
embarking to recapitulate the work of Morgan Spurlock.

and while we're at it (vis a vis the original subject of incandescent
lights vs. CFs)... just who are these Dutch Masters whose calibrated
retinas are so acutely attuned to color temperature and chromatic
rendition?

I got in early. Sometime year before last, or possibly early last year,
Menards had gigantic palettes of CFs for sale at less than $1 bulb, or
something like that, for 2-packs of Sylvania Soft White 13 watt
"mini-60's".

Worsk great. I relamped almost the entire house and bought enough extra
tubes to relamp it 1.5 times more. I have several in vented base-up
track fixtures, and a few in unvented base-up globes and haven't had any
problems. None have died, and my electric bill has dropped measurably
and significantly.

And, amazingly, i can still tell what color my stuff is! I very much
don't notice any "difference" in "color rendition" between natural
sunlight and my CFs, and i've tried to ... well, notice.

Puerile whinging, i say...

Of course, the Damoclean sword looms menacing for the day that one burns
out, when i shall throw myself bodily in the street, shrieking in agony
from Murcury Possoming [sic] and beg my neighbors to euthanize me before
the EPA plucks my parrot and drowns me in tank of HgX and locks me away
in Camp X-ray for environmental terrism [sic].

oh wait. i'll just put it in a little plastic grocery bag until it's
convenient for me to drop it off at some recycling center somewhere.
Neverminds...

CF's rule. Esp. when one realizes that a very very modest investment
in CF's in this country frees up generating capacity equivalent to a few
gigawatts of nuclear (or coal, for that matter) power plants.

Should be a Know Brainer for the anti-Coal people, the Anti-Nuke people,
the Anti-Natural Gas Peaker Plant people and the Anti-building High
Tension Distribution Power Lines IN MY BACK YARD IN MY FORMERLY A
CORNFIELD SUBDEVELOPMENT people.

Oh, ya. Someone said on the radio at lunch that it would be harder to
see the ZOG watermark on my $1000 bills that I like to count before i go
to walmart. I Forgot. I don't have the Dutch Master's eye.

BTW, CF's rule. Old school wolfram tubes drool.

Mine, a "Jake" model from Toto, works better than any of the old ones
I ever had.

As for CFLs, I put them in years ago. After one day of use, I don't
even notice the difference. Haven't tried the newer models yet as
only 1 of the old ones needed replacing. The only drawback I have
seen is in the outside lights - the warm up period before they come up
to full power.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for sharing your insight and for providing a link to these
pictures; they really underscore the area's immense beauty. I was
somewhat reluctant to use the USGS estimate because, as you say,
nobody really knows how much oil exists and, more specifically, how
much is economically recoverable (e.g., to this point, the last time I
checked, Shell's Alberta tar sands project was running three times
over budget and their Sakhalin II costs had doubled to $20 billion).
FWIW, I'm also told by industry insiders that the USGS tends to be
somewhat "optimistic" in its assessments (political manipulation, as
you suggest? .... paging Mr. Gale Norton... Mr. Norton to the courtesy
phone). In any event, Americans would be ill-advised to squander what
could very well be their last remaining reserve of domestic oil, for
reasons of national security if nothing else, unless, of course, you
plan to invade an oil-rich country, kill their citizenry and rob them
blind..... opps, never mind. ;-)

I have to admit I indulge in a little schadenfreude whenever I pull
into a gas station and see all those Hummers, Tahoes and Excursions
filling up at the pumps (what can I say, I have my weaknesses). I
recently overheard one driver complain that the pump would only
dispense up to $100.00 at a time! You almost want to put your arm
around their shoulder and say "There, there, don't worry, there's an
endless supply of cheap crude oil just waiting to be tapped and prices
will heading back to a buck a gallon any day now. (*)

Cheers,
Paul

* To give you a sense of the enormous costs in finding new oil, BP is
paying £297,000 (US$ 520,000.00) a day to lease a *single* drillship
in the Gulf of Mexico and their Thunder Horse production platform cost
a cool $5 billion (2005 dollars).

That's the thing. Even if there is enough oil in Alaska to make
our entire country independent of foreign oil, it's still a finite
amount. Oil is not a resource that can be replenished, never has been.
People need to stop treating it as if it were and practice conservation.

I asked one local gas station about that out of curiousity, as I
can't recall seeing that on the pumps before. I was told it was
a corporate decision and that it only means that after that the
pumps can be reset to dispense more. Why, I do not know but as
I'm a cynic I'm sure it has something to do with minimizing loss
reductions for the companies.
Personally I can't imagine spending that much on gas each time
I fill up but a lot of people do, I guess. On the flip side,
in the past month, I have seen an incredible number of gas guzzling
toys being put up for sale in people's yard.
Everywhere I look I see huge RVs, boats, big trucks, SUVs and
Hummers.
At the same time, I'm also seeing more people bicycling
than I ever have and I'm enjoying that part.

We have a 25 year old farm truck that is a gaz guzzler with
two tanks that we use only when necessary to haul or pull
something. We're looking for another small older Subaru wagon for
a second car for my husband to bop around in to do local errands.

Hi Terri,

I believe it has to do with the VISA and MasterCard pre-authorizations
(I'm not sure if this is still the case, but the MasterCard limit per
transaction was set at $75.00).

Here in Halifax, diesel is now selling for $1.43 per litre
($5.38/gallon), so you can hit this $100.00 limit in as little as 18.6
gallons.

Cheers,
Paul

Has it occurred to you that they want you out of the passing lane?
They are pretty much the only ones in America to observe something
close to lane discipline.

Cars do all the time in Europe too.

Really? I see plenty of large trucks in the left and middle lanes moving
slower than traffic. There is at least some justification for the middle
lane, since too many stupid drivers try to merge at 2/3 of the speed of
traffic.

Do what? Do these European cars have drivers?

TOPIC: Slick Toilet Paper...

Seems to me they intentionally make some toilet paper with a "slick surface"
so it will not "wipe" as well and you will therefore use more toilet paper
"to get the job done"... (Then they sell more toilet paper.)

I have solved this problem. When I have been eating something greasy and it
"comes out the other end", I use a sheet of paper towel and this gets most
of the job done with a quickness! Paper towels are not slick in the least.

I placed a paper towel holder in the bathroom for drying dirty hands
(working on car or whatever), but I'm thinking of placing another paper
towel holder next to the toilet paper!

not a good idea, unless you like plumbing bills

nothing should be put down a toilet other than human waste
and toilet tissue, both break apart quickly in water. paper
towels will not break apart and end up clinging to any rough
surface in the pipes that then need to be rootered out.

water soluble is true for all the waste drains. no grease
or oil, coffee grounds, hair. put this stuff in a paper
towel and toss it in the trash. our neighbor (plumber) gave
us this wisdom 30 years ago, also helped us cut down a tree
a few feet from our yard line. he sent his kids and some
grandkids thru college augering drain lines.
