??? Takes me nearly an hour to get to the nearest train station, and an
eight hour flight (with layover) Form NY to CA takes more than three days by
train. Flying costs $205 and the train costs $250. No thanks.

and depending on your length of trip, utilizing a cab may be much
cheaper than parking fees at the airport.

It obviously depends on one's trip destination. If train service is
available, trips under 200 miles can be much quicker (and cheaper) via
train vs. flying, considering three hours is the MINIMUM required to
take any flight..

does train service exist everywhere? can a train pick me up at my
house? is a train really cheaper for a family of 4?

NY - FL is <200 miles?

It takes me 2+ hrs just to get to the gate (I only live 20 minutes from
the airport).

I am going to NYC in a few weeks. Amtrak costs more and takes several
days instead of several hours.

There is no one size fits all for this. A taxi or shuttle may be
cheaper but if you park your car on the street near your house you may
need someone to move your car for street cleaning or tow away days.
Check the yellow pages for discount coupons from private parking garages.

Last year, it took me 32 hrs to fly from Raleigh to Providence. Train
is 16 hrs.

Prov to NY city via train is three hrs (plus 30 minutes to the train
station). I'm lucky to get on the plane within three hrs after
leaving home.

Then again, the frugal approach for me is to drive half way to New Haven
& take the subsidized commuter train at a fraction of the cost of Amtrak
(including 40 cents / mile driving - estimated variable costs).

Some prefer the bus - non stop at a fraction of the Amtrak price and
even faster yet.

As someone pointed out - one size does not fit all.

Woops, that one slipped through.
Free2Air is the pits here, but no way am I paying for cable or any other
paid service. Seems content is just as bad. Severe shortage on quality
content leads to every bit of crap being accepted.

Might be time to experiment with a sat dish.

We actually justify a slow, but bit better than basic internet connection
on the basis that the monthly fee is less than a months worth of
newspapers.

it's never the president, but the administration. clinton and gore didn't
PERSONALLY set the thing up, promote it, etc. it happened under that
admin. no reason to think it wouldn't have been the same with any other
admin.
and do we really KNOW that either clinton or gore can use a computer? i've
never seen either doing it, but that doesn't mean they don't know how.

the prez selects and congress confirms some? most? all?
who we put into congress is a lot more important than who
we elect as president because they have ultimate override
authority. don't like the war? blame congress for not
stopping it, because they can.

but hey, just keep focusing on the twins currently running,
'cause that's what they are. there's an agenda that's
being followed, and it doesn't matter who's elected.
same ultimate goal, different path.

only a revolution will change it, and we've been successfully
tribalized so it won't happen.

just turning the constitution in a 'goddamn piece of paper' and the justice

it's that simple.

i think it's pretty funny that you of all people should be incensed over a

- To get a handle on what I can buy for how much money, I keep a price book.
I know now how much stuff costs at different stores. When a special is
available in the flier or a sale, I know if it is really a good buy. I know
what to buy at the bulk store, and what is not a good deal.
- I pick up my new bicycle from freecycle today!
- Husband car pools so that we can go down to one car and still allow the
kids and I some field trips.
- Cut and split wood off our property rather than buying oil.
- Don't buy many cleaning products. A can of comet, my string arms and back
and some vinegar.
- Don't buy expensive toiletry items. Using a puff in the shower allows me
to use a tiny dot of liquid soap and still get a nice lather.
- If it ever stops raining, I will use my clothesline instead of the dryer.

I can't think of anything else.

I've got a neighbor that simply doesn't understand that concept. He
has decorative lighting on all the time in rooms he is seldom in and
just leaves the regular lights on.

The only time these lights ever get turned off is when all the power
for the house is shut off. Which is not infrequent due to non payment...

Not heating/cooling lighting areas you aren't in is probably the
greatest way to save. It's certainly cheaper to implement.

I suspect there are many similar households using vast quantities of
electricity while the house is idling.

Not sure, but for me the bread outlet store is a good bit

No cable would mean no TV except DVD or tape. I live

Who doesn't make their own, except maybe some folks
who don't drink coffee? I personally
make a full pot every morning and fill my thermos. This
lasts me all day and there is enough coffee in the pot
for my wife and I to have a cup or two before leaving
the house. Not buying coffee after leaving the house
is the frugal part.

I don't see how not using a VCR is frugal. I already
have a VCR, purchased for $35 more than 5 years ago.
Not using it would really not save me anything except
a few pennies worth of electricity. It's also hard
to share watching with my wife or friends on a computer.

Depends on your specific cell phone plan. Certainly
