And THAT'S the problem. The American car companies simply *cannot*
build a car like that. They used to try to capture a little bit of the
look and sound, but they never could capture the /feel/ of a well
engineered car.

I can remember back in the 1980s when a lot of American car company ads
would boast of their cars having "European styling". Now, I lived in
Europe for a while in the 1980s, and I can assure you that no European
car companies ever tried to hawk their cars by saying they had "American
styling", or anything else American. European drivers aren't all
mechanically and engineering knowledgeable drivers, but a much higher
percentage of them are than is true of American drivers, and they
universally sneered at American cars: overly large, underpowered,
poor-handling barges.

American cars are shit, plain and simple, and the companies that make
them deserve to fail.

The US is a big place. Many states are filled with people who don't
know anyone who works for an automaker. Unless you mean those car
salesmen who've always been so honest and upfront with everyone for
so long.

I never thought Audis were all that cool, and they broke a lot, and were
hideously expensive to fix.

Case in point - friend had his oil cooler leak. Shouldn't be any big deal,
right - just replace the damn thing. But nooooo... these geniuses from Germany
didn't make the oil cooler be a set of tubes and fins in front or behind the
radiator, they made it be a box that has oil in tubes going through the
coolant.

Well, now, when the damned oil leaked, it leaked into the coolant, and what's
worse, the COOLANT LEAKED INTO THE OIL!!!!!

Well, he tried to get it fixed, and the Audi dealer said no, the water in the
oil system had ruined the engine, and in order to fix it, he would have to
replace the engine and some other parts that had oily water in them but were
external to the engine.

He ended up trading it on a new Audi for $4K, while the vehicle itself, if it
had been running OK, was a blue book value of $16K.

An oil/water heat exchanger???? What were they THINKING???? Gaaaaa....

I bought an '04 3.2 TT, used. It is without a doubt the best car
I've ever had. I have every expectation of getting at least
three hundred thousand miles out of it, in style and comfort.
It's worth every bit of the twenty-five five I spent on it, and
if the high quality parts need some fixing, I'm willing to do it.

I could have bought a Mustang, but I wouldn't park it at the end
of the parking lot.

this doesn't make sense. Either the oil pressure or the coolant pressure
should be higher than the other making the leak one way. I would think
oil would have gone into the coolant and very little if any coolant got
into the oil.

Dealers like to say stuff like that.

Because they can do stuff like that and profit.

That car was fixed for little $$ and put on their used lot and sold at a
big profit.

The Big 3 aren't in the business of selling cars. They're in the
business of reneging on contracts they made with the people working
for them. What the Big 3 produce is automotive cancer. What the Big
3 sell to the American public are crippling financial obligations to
make payments for rapidly-decaying pieces of worthless junk which wind
up being expensive at any price.

Not even after Bush Senior nose-dived into their Premier's lap ten
years ago would Japanese people buy Big 3 cars. Nor would any sane
person, now, anywhere in the world.

Well, one might argue that she simply ran away out of general boredom,
feeling un-special (especially as the oldest child and only girl, with
unfair chore division), and all sorts of little peeves, such as having
to wear shoes most of the time instead of sneakers and being expected
to walk her 6-year-old brother home as her occasional responsibility,
which, as far as she was concerned, was only helping to make him
impossibly spoiled, unlike her. ("She couldn't remember being anyone's
responsibility in first grade. Her mother had simply picked her up at
the bus stop every day.")

But she did very much resent her low allowance, though I doubt a
higher one would have made much difference, given her and her
brother's callous treatment of their parents, who become "nearly
frantic." Obviously, lack of conscience is Claudia's main problem -
not financial greed, per se.

Lenona.
