No place.

The internet was ruined once some intelligence was no longer required for participation.

I've tried to make facebook as close to usenet as I can, but with
minimal success. I see posts only from friends and friends of friends
(you never can tell, and I've "met" some good people who are friends of
friends), and the friends are pretty much usenet people and actual RL
friends/relatives. Still, it's difficult or impossible to carry on an
actual conversation because you are frequently unable to get back to
posts once you've left them.

So are Obama and Hillary. I guess. I haven't sunk that low yet.

It's probably our fault for spawning children whose children tweet.

Didn't Facebook define "social media"?

I have no experience with FB so your preceding paragraph confuses
me Harry. It seems to me what you describe is exactly what
usenet is/was. Someone posts something and, thereafter, anyone
can toss in a comment.

TRB uses Facebook, and from what I understand you create an account
and form a network of "friends". Your posts are sent to your
friends, and their posts are sent to you. From this description
it seems that someone like Rod Speed would be shut out of
such a network. How would you ever see Hitler if you hadn't
friended him?

sci.astro.research is an example of a usenet news group with
intelligence. The intelligence is filtered by the moderator
who is a hero in my mind.

After posting my response, I googled for "internet discussion sites"
and found, among others, a Wikipedia description of "internet forums",
which seems exactly what you want Harry. Check out mathoverflow.net
for an example. Note the discrepancy between the number of views
and the number of responses to any given thread.

I got this guy to do my taxes. Ended up pretty close to what I expected, but he did it and I didn't pull my hair out by the roots. Then, for the next few years I just followed what he did and did the same. The laws don't change that much, and neither did I. Repeat after a few years.

Now I use an on-line service. Easy-peasey. They do have advanced service where you can talk to someone. But I find the simpler program works better than I need.

As far as talking to an IRS agent... WTF!!! It's like talking to your pickpocket, "How much are you taking? Should I leave all my money in my purse or should I put some in my bra? What do you guys like, small or big bills?" Get someone on your side, don't discuss strategy with your opponent.

My near neighbor's back porch.

Sorry, Harry, "usenet" is the sum of my experience with social
networks unless one counts Fidonet of the 1980s.

>Twitter -

I recall an interview heard on NPR's Morning Edition some time
shortly after the birth of twitter in which two young men who were in
some way associated with it tried, in many ways, to express that
"twitter" is so-named because it is intended for twits, without actually
_using_ the term. IIRC, they described it as being for that person who
interrupts ones day with a useless telephone call to chat about what
_he's_ doing or interrupts it with a pointless sms message, that is to
say: A twit.

>Where did this universe take the side track to stupidland???
Well, you asked. As I see it: Post WWII public education,
culminating in Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Rodgers, et al. "Miss June" not so
much because Romper Room was a regional franchise with different parts
of the country seeing different "Miss Junes". Sesame Street was the
final nail.
