You'd rather *natives* receive more benefits and services than YOU do?

Your complaint shouldn't be toward the people that receive the benefits and
services but rather the people that *steal* the money from you and give the
benefits and services (regardless to whom they give the benefits and
services to) after slicing off a nice fat chunk for themselves.

Simply, your view of the problem is myopic and thus unsolvable as you've
described it.

I used to buy used laptops but nowadays people want so much for their
used crap (check out Craigslist sometime) making it hard to justify the
cost savings vs. risk associated with buying any used item. I'm looking
for a used desktop right now on Craigslist and I still can't find a
single listing that beats the refurbished stuff sold at Microcenter.

I stopped reading right there. That one statement discredited the rest
of the article and proved the writer is a moron.

With anything, when you buy it you inspect the condition of the item
to try to determine if it's abused and you test the system to ensure
it's fully functional. I bought a very cheap Pentium class laptop
which gives me a very cheap mobile system which is sufficient for
basic word processing and web surfing, but it is so obviously old that
no one would want to steal it, and if it broke it wouldn't matter as
it has lasted me three years already.

As far as extended warranties, normally I tell people not to bother
since they are designed as profit devices, but in the case of laptops
I tell people to consider them. Even though statistically speaking
they should almost always be money losers, everyone I know that has
bought a laptop has had a pricey problem with it within the first 3
years of ownership. And unlike a component built desktop, it can be
very expensive to repair. I also tell people to treat their laptops
like the very delicate expensive purchase they are, but few people
seem to follow that advice.

In the case of plasma TV's and warranties... I tell people not to buy
plasma TV's because they are too expensive.

Yeah I don't get the big deal of used mattresses, because as you say,
people sleep on them all the time in hotels, but normally people cover
mattresses with these strange things called "sheets".

The only time I've had a vacuum cleaner give up the ghost is when they
are really old and really used.

First three years of ownership? They are pretty much technology obsolete
after two years.

The problem with extended warranties on lap tops is with your
observation about the very advice you give to people "I also tell people
to treat their laptops like the very delicate expensive purchase they
are, but few people seem to follow that advice."

Extended warranties are not abuse insurance policies. Any indicators
that the lap top is in less than pristine condition will be used against
you when filing an extended warranty claim. In reality extended
warranties largely only cover known manufacturing defects - defects the
manufacturer is actually willing to admit exist. Beyond that the most
common credo from the firm you paid the money to when you try to
exercise your extended warranty on a lap top is "Not covered - you
dropped it." (Hard drives, case problems, failed or broken ports, failed
display.) Followed by "Not covered - you wore it out." (Keyboards, track
points, lcd back lights, CD & DVD drives.) And let's not forget "Not
covered - it has moisture damage." (Dead system.)

You don't get a guarantee of coverage. You take it in for repair under
extended warranty, and the repair depot and the place that took your
money for the warranty have a conversation, and then they decide if you
get a warranty repair or not. But most of that conversation will go back
and forth, with the extended warranty provider trying to find the reason
why the repair should not be covered.

IMO extended warranties are still a rip off. And on an item such as a
lap top, despite the item maybe being on the expensive side, there are
far more reasons they can use to get out of providing the coverage -
just because of the nature of it being a lap top. Sales people will tell
you anything and everything is covered when you buy the warranty with
lap top. The contracts generally say otherwise. And even getting what
seems a legitimate defect repaired practically comes down to a "he said,
she said" contest rather than a term in the warranty contract.

Debt and credit issues face all Americans whether they are currently
working or not and whether or not they have managed their finances
well over the years. A multitude of financial concerns plague many who
have had tragic circumstances hit them such as job loss, unforeseen
health problems, divorce, disability and many other situations.
Personal stress mounts as looming bankruptcy or constant collection
calls shadow family after family who has accrued huge debts through
credit cards, mortgages, car loans and business refinancing.

I seem to remember the Chinese executing the head of their EPA recently for
taking bribes. I suspect they are serious. Their exports are important to them.

Sure, after the problem was discovered in already shipped product and
the incident had blown up into an international scandal, the Chinese
took very public (and dramatic) action.

Self-policing at the source is a different thing altogether.

You may take note of all the other heads of agencies they did
not execute for taking bribes.

Yes, but they havent executed anyone for too mutch lead in the paint.

Bet they arent serious enough to start executing anyone any time soon.

And it clearly doesnt stop others from doing it anyway.

Interest only mortgages (IO) are something of a rage these days as
people use the real estate market as an investment. You will pay only
the interest on the loan for the first couple of years but beware the
unpredictable real estate market. Come selling time, the house may not
be worth as much as you paid for it and you will have to come up with
the extra money to pay the loan back...money that you may not have.

Perhaps the question can best be answered by what most men don't want.

1. They don't want a wife who is not appreciative of his efforts,
lets herself go to pot, keeps a sloppy house, has ill-behaved
children, spends all his money, witholds sex when a man needs it
(which may not always be convenient for the woman), nags constantly,
ignores his opinion, threatens divorce over minor issues, shops
constantly and charges up the credit cards without making a
contribution, teaches the children to disrespect their father, and
basically ignores his needs in every way.

2. Many foreign countries, especially in Latin America, South
America, certain Asian Countries, and indeed many western European
countries have cultures where the women still want to be traditional
women. The want to dress with a feminine flair and look good, and
they want to avoid getting fat. They will still put on dresses and
hosiery. They pay attention to their hair and makeup. Many such
women value modesty and the traditional caring attributes that are
characteristic of women in general. They don't mutilate themselves
with tattoos and body piercings in strange places. If they work in an
office, they don't automatically accuse every male co-worker of
leering or making rude remarks to them.

It is for these reasons that many American men are just sitting out
the pursuit of marriage... period. The young ones learn the lessons
from their divorced fathers. When a young man needs sex, there are
plenty of women willing to accommodate him without buying into the
whole courtship-marriage-divorce continuum.

Most American women are not informed of other cultures around the
world and have no idea how good they have it here in the USA. As a
result, a good portion of them act like spoiled brats and nasty
bitches, a large percentage of the time.

Little do they know that simply by chance and happenstance, these
women could have been born in a place like Iran, where the government
police would tell them how to dress, require them to hide their hair,
not mix with the opposite sex in public, and pass laws that allow
their husbands to beat them, take custody of their children, turn them
out into the street or keep them from leaving their houses,
apartments, or the country itself without their husbands' permission.
If she really screws up and cheats on her husband, she can be stoned
to death by her friends and neighbors.

Or it could be a place like Saudi Arabia where women aren't even
allowed to drive lest their car break down and they are forced to
asked male strangers for assistance.

By such reasoning, the freedom, opportunities, favorable divorce laws,
and special privileges that that American women have should make them
the happiest women in the world. Often, however... for some reason,
it does not.
