Nonsense. Those laws refer to wage earners. A volunteer would be exempt.

Generally the law only recognizes volunteers performing for a
non-profit group.

I know this is probably not what you want to hear, but I would move.

The job market is pretty good right now. It's not a boom precisely,
but it's relatively easy to get a job as far as I can tell. I am the
last person who ever wants to move for a job (done it and didn't like
it), and life is not all about money, but I personally think you have
to ask yourself whether it's really worth it to stay if it is making
life that difficult. Do you love that part of the country enough that
it is worth it to you to be stressed out and desperate for even a
minimum-wage job, when in other areas, you could maybe have your choice
of jobs that pay considerably more?

I'm thinking if you are now considering things that, like you said,
you wouldn't have ever considered before, then maybe you should
consider moving. Or even a long-distance commute. With the wage
differences you're talking about, it might even be feasible to work
in some other city 5 days a week and rent an apartment or a room there.

P.S. Regarding the "desperate" part. My company is looking for some
part times and I sometimes scan the craigslist resumes. Anything with
"desperate" or" will do anything" are never even opened.

When I do open messages I never reply to someones who description of a
job uses more words than the Constitution uses describe the powers and
duties of the president or has wording like "interfaced between middle
and upper management" (tells me you did the coffee run) .

Minor point, but I think it's *supposed* to be businesses you've done
business with in the last year. Or maybe 6 months. Not ever, in the
whole time you've been alive.

That sounds annoying. I'd be tempted to keep a pad of paper next to the
phone, and when they call, say, "I already subscribe. I'm keeping a pad
of paper next to the phone and making a note of how many times you call me
asking me to subscribe even though I already do. When it gets to 5 calls,
I'm going to cancel my subscription. Can I have your name so I can add
it to the list of names I'll give them when they ask why I'm canceling?"

It's a tad bit snarky, but sometimes you have to get that way with big
corps if you want any results, sadly.

Although companies that you have done business with over , I think,
six months are exempt the law requires them to abide by your wishes if
you ask to be placed on their own list. Failure to comply means they
broke the law.
Long before that law took effect the local daily was calling me
almost every night.I called their circulation manager who claimed he was
powerless because the firms were outside contractors. The next time I
got a call I gave them the name and direct line of the circulation guy
and said he was the one who made decisions in my household. A few
minutes later called asking why I gave out his office number. I
replied," because I do not have your home phone". The calls stopped.

Is anyone making lithium-ion rechargable batteries in AA yet? Energizer
makes lithium batteries in AA, but they are specifically not rechargeable.

I've been told Lithium-Ion rechargables can't be made small enough for AA.

The issue is that Lithium batteries are 3+ Volts while AA batteries
are 1.5 Volts (more or less). You'll see rechargeable lithium batteries
that are designed to replace two AA cells (usually side by side) used
in many digital cameras but none to replace a single AA cell.

Nobody knows.

The both deliver the same amount of current.

Now, I would think 3 watts is a lot of power out of a set of AA
batteries, and would imagine the battery closer to the LED *could* be
hotter because the LED is shedding a lot of heat. A hotter battery
generally has a higher capacity than a cooler one though...

Why don't you load some NiMH rechargeables in it, I'll bet battery
life will be much longer and you'll save some money if you run that
flashlight much...

<URL: http://www.bushwalking.org.au/FAQ/FAQ_Batteries.htm />

If you go to the battery manufacturers' WWW sites (energizer.com for
instance) and look up the technical data on batteries, you will find
that alkaline batteries have vastly different energy content depending
upon the drain to which they're subjected. By 'vastly', I mean 3:1 or
more, getting worse and worse as the drain goes up. Alkalines are also
more temperature sensitive than lithium cells. Part of this has to do
with the internal impedance (resistance) of the battery, part to do with
the chemistry. That's why alkalines are absolutely worthless in
high-drain applications like digital cameras but work great in
relatively low-drain applications like LED headlamps, Walkman radios
(not CD players), etc.

Perhaps Ni-MH would be a better choice:

looks reasonable.

1) You don't have to "Qualify" to use the long form.
2) There are other deductions you can take on the long form.
Mortgage intrest alone does not have to exceed the standard
deduction.

So instead of making a monthly house payment I should be investing
that in stocks?? Then what?? Am I supposed to live out on the street??

So let's assume that I have divert some of my income toward a houes
or rent payment. Renting appreciates 0%. In fact, as a renter I
wouldn't participate in the appreciation of the property at all.

Compared to that, the 4-5% increase in housing actually looks good.

Yes, but see my first response. I have to spend some of my
income on a housing payment. Rent is money gone, never to be
seen again. But a mortgage payment reduces the ammount I owe
to the bank. When I sell the house I get the difference between
what the house is worth and what I owe (minus the closing costs).

A bogus assertion. The landlord has factored in the maintenance costs
for the property and includes that in the rent. Since most landlords
are not in the business of losing money, your rent includes taxes,
insurance, and maintenance costs.

He's refering to depreciation. It's not an expense.
Unfortuantly it cuts both ways. And certianly is not a subsidy.
Depretiation reduces the tax basis on a property. Thereby
increaseing the capital gains taxes that are owed when the
property is sold.
