Drill drainage holes in the bottom and make it into a planter for small
cactus. Buy a new one. Seriously. Make sure the next wok is plain metal.
Non-stick pans shouldn't be used at the high heat levels typical of wok
cooking. I don't care what the manufacturers say.

It wasn't from walmart, but I did exactly this to a large wok
that I just didn't want to throw away. I used a wire wheel on a
side grinder to remove the teflon, then sanded it lightly with
emory cloth to remove the rest and smooth everything out. I have
been using it for about 5 years like that.

The problem is that the metal is very prone to rusting, so I have
to oil it after every cleaning, and temper it like a cast iron
pan. Since I mostly use it on a fish fryer grill (although I
will use it on the stove), it has held up pretty well. It ain't
pretty by any means, but useful.

Or wear it as a dunce cap for shopping at walmart.

It's going to be aluminum.

Give the toy big box version to your kids to play with and pick up a
real wok. They aren't expensive and you don't have to wonder if it is
safe to use.

It's steel. Magnet test. This thing is fairly hefty, which is why I
hate just tossing it.

Maybe, maybe not.

I'm not really sure what substrate they use for Xylan. But whatever
it is it won't make a good Wok.

Wikipedia has a nice article on Woks:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wok

The downside is to get a good quality Wok or you'll wind up wasting time
seasoning it or just not getting the results you want. I've had a lot of
cheap woks, I think it makes a lot more sense to get a decent quality
wok and take care of it. It should last a very long time.

How are you "cleaning" it? Wiping it out with a paper towel should be
sufficient. Do not ever subject an iron utensil (or maybe your skillet) to
water.

Don't wash wooden salad bowls either.

Why not save it for wok cooking that does not require really high temps,
such as deep frying and steaming? Then get a new rolled steel wok for
the stir frying. If there's a "Chinatown" near you, that's where you'll
get the best selection and price.

Sand blasting would remove the coating pretty easily, and the rough
surface should smooth out and "season" fairly quickly with use;
especially if you use steel utensils.

I found out how to remove "Teflon". Simmer tomato sauce for a couple
of days. When you toss the sauce out the Teflon goes with it :-))

The acid destroyed the Teflon.

I just read an article which stated that the average family of 4 here in
the USA spends $900 a month on groceries, plus more on eating out at
restaurants.

I was shocked! Is this true?

We have a family of 4, and our grocery budget is only $180 a month. Until
last month, it was $160 a month, but we had to raise it a bit because many
food prices have gone up 20 to 30% in the past year.

I know that most folks would consider me frugal, but I had no idea we were
getting by on 20% of what the average similar sized family was spending.

How much do you spend on groceries a month?

For the past twelve years, we (two) have averaged $320/month. In 2007,
we averaged about $360/mo ($84/wk). As reported previously, we've seen
our monthly grocery bill jump to about $500 during both Jan & Feb of
this year with no apparent change in habits. (We tend to eat primarily
fresh fruits & vegetables with minimal frozen / canned / boxed items,
fresh seafood 1-2 times / week and not all that much meat or prepared
items.)

I suspect $900/mo is probably valid for four, especially if there is a
teenager. A lot will depend on what you include. Many kids today seem
to have both breakfast & lunch at school which could significantly
reduce their grocery costs. Although we tend to buy paper, personal
& cleaning products, etc at Walmart, we included them as grocery items.

About $150 a month for two and we don't eat out at restaurants.

Note we are shopping at the least expensive grocery store and always looking
at the PRICE PER OUNCE shelf labels for each item and always buying the
least expensive [per ounce] brand/product.

So an item might be small package at 63 cents per ounce with a price of
$2.65 and another brand of the same thing will be a larger package at 19
cents per ounce and a price of $8.95.

We buy the 19 cents per ounce package at $8.95.

i'm not really sure. more than most because we (2 of us) eat almost 100%
organic. i buy a side of beef at a time and it lasts a long time. buy cx
by the case. i can tell you that we spend 100/mon just on dairy & eggs.
we do a csa thing that runs about 20/wk for 28wks for produce. it's mostly
veggies, so i still have to buy fruit. meat probably runs us about
100/mon. so we're up to about 300/mon for meat, dairy and produce. that
doesn't include the ben and jerry's when i go on an ice cream jag. :)

I stopped "grocery shopping" years ago so I can't say specifically
what the expense is. I can say I'll spend under $20 at Grocery Outlet
(think Big Lots for groceries), stock up every few months of loss
leader meats (local store has USDA choice Tri-tip on sale $2.97 a
pound, trimmed) and fill in gaps with bargains found at Costco and the
99¢ Only Store. So it's most likely around the same amount you
mention you spend or less. As for eating out; I spend about $20 a
month. I know I'm in the minority as most people are creatures of
habit and go every Saturday and buy the same prepackaged products and
brands they always have without price comparisons.

I want to know who these "average families" are; it can't be the
average for the whole US.

About $600 for the two of us, plus more for restaurant meals. We both
work and are willing to trade money for time.

My point was really that the current USPS system actively DISCOURAGES
people from reusing priority mail boxes. I guess this is because they give
the boxes away, and they don't want folks using them for media mail, parcel
post, etc.

Where does the free money to give all of these boxes away come from? Is
it the US taxpayer?

I really think it would be a good idea for the post office to simply start
charging up front for the boxes. If they did that, then it wouldn't matter
if people reused them over and over at all. Why would anyone care, if the
cost was paid by the original mailer up front? (instead of subsidized as a
giveaway box)

You pay for the box in the Priority postage charge.

Then why not just buy your boxes? Better yet, why not simply collect
them at the grocer, etc & reuse them?

The obvious answer is abuse - people like you would use them for Media, etc.

Nope, they are paid for by what they charge for priority mail.

It can make it harder to sort them quickly.

Harder to see what that current address is and which type of mail it is.

Essentially because society works better if everyone gets a
basic education and not everyone can afford to pay for that.

That costs much more in dollar costs and societal costs when a considerable
percentage of those kids dont get brought up properly by the state.

> They should lose custody immediately and permanently, and the kids should be adopted out.

Pity that so few want those dregs kids.

You dont get to jam your views down everyone else's throats.

There would still be plenty who would fail to do that.

You dont get to jam your views down everyone else's throats.
