PHOENIX (AP) -- The FBI alerted law enforcement agencies last month
that an al-Qaeda terrorist now in detention had talked of
masterminding a plot to set a series of devastating forest fires
around the western United States.
Rose Davis, a spokeswoman for the National Interagency Fire Center in
Boise, told The Associated Press that officials there took note of the
warning but didn't see a need to act further on it.

The contents of the June 25 memo from the FBI's Denver office were
reported Friday by The Arizona Republic. Davis declined to share a
copy of the memo and an FBI spokeswoman in Denver didn't immediately
return a telephone call.

The Republic reported that the detainee, who was not identified, said
the plan involved three or four people setting wildfires using timed
devices in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming that would detonate in
forests and grasslands after the operatives had left the country.

The memo noted that investigators couldn't determine whether the
detainee was telling the truth.

The newspaper said many forest law enforcement officers it contacted
had no idea the warning had been issued.

Depends on the house, climate, sun load, and a bunch of other factors.
Dry climate - swamp cooler
Semi-dry climate- surround outside AC coil with a filtering material
that you keep saturated with water. The moistened air is cooler, and
since the coil doesn't care about humidity, it can lower the head
pressure and costs a little.
heavy sun - plantings, white paint
otherwise cool climate - cold well water and radiator (works only
so-so, but helps a little)
All areas - insulation.

From someone in a humid zone (Ontario)
Insulation
Blinds/shades for windows
Dehumidifiers if you don't have central air (I put one in the
basement, costs less to run than AC)

The biggest help is to lower the heat gain. Think insulation, drapes,
shade trees, white or light colors etc.

Is there somewhere one can find a good deal on an AM/FM radio recorder
that is programmable to record a segment of broadcast of radio from on
specfic time to another for each day during a week, a recurring daily
broadcast from monday to friday? I've heard such a device exists, but
I cannot remember the name of it or any source from which to buy it.

Is there any sort of helpful printed or online guide to camping in the
outdoors? I haven't camped since the boy scouts, but would like to
return to the outdoors in a tent. Topics I am foggy on would include
hoisting a 'bear bag' to keep food items safe from wild animals, and
how to pitch the tent step by step, though I may need other help with
other topics, i forget just what it is to be camping after so long.

In some national parks like Yosemite you can be fined for leaving
food in your car. What is not taken with you is to be put in bear proof
receptacles.

In the past two months, bears have been popping out windows at an
alarming rate, crawling into as many as 15 cars a night and, if they
smell food in the trunks, ripping through the rear seats. Hondas, Dodge
Caravans and older Toyotas have been favorite targets, but one
late-model BMW convertible sustained $5,000 in damage.

The bears are not easily discouraged. Males at this time of year can
weigh over 350 pounds, females 250 pounds; some can stand 6 feet tall on
their hind legs. Rangers say there may be 350 to 550 bears in the park.
About 20 of them are considered ''campground bears,'' virtually addicted
to human food.

Some bears have broken into cars that contained no food. Rangers
speculate that the bears were drawn by leftover food smells, the scent
of perfume or suntan lotion. Perhaps -- the most worrisome possibility
-- the bears simply enjoyed it.

But the engine power gain is real. During WWII German fighter plane
engines had a MW50 boost. MW50 = a 50 percent mix of methanol and
water. The methanol acted as an antifreeze in cold high altitudes
where the planes flew. The extra power boost is from the steam
generated when water is sprayed into the hot engine. It probably
shortens engine life. But a fighter service plane's life is pretty
short anyway and a power boost at a critical time helps it stay alive
to fight another day. Water injection was used in early airliners
(Boeing 707s) and bombers (B-47s and B-52s) where water was injected
into the hot exhausts and produced a very impressive roar and long
white vapor trail on takeoffs.

Theoretically injecting water into a car engine sounds beneficial as
the steam would provide a boost as well as remove some of the heat.
But its something I am not willing to risk. Engine wear? What about
corrosion in the exhaust elements?

When I bought my house in the SFBay area 7 years ago, there wasn't a
specific line item on the settlement sheet called "escrow fee". The
biggest charges were the lenders and homeowners title insurance. The
lenders title insurance I paid and came out to .0015 or .15% of the amount
borrowed. The other policy was homeowners title insurance which defends
the title to the full market value of the house. The seller paid this,
which came out to .0035 or .35% of the total sale price.

Old Republic title insurance company handled the escrow. The title
insurance fees covered the escrow as there just wasn't a specific charge to
handle escrow. All the money flowed to them. They were the ones to make
sure the title was free of all liens, old loans paid off, and taxes were
paid. Only when everything was paid up and the deed was signed over did
the seller receive what remained in the escrow account, which wasn't much
after each agent (I had my own buyers agent) take their 3% cut.
