// Sorry for cross-posting

My name is Ji Soo Yi, and I am a Ph.D. student in the Health Systems
Institute at Georgia Tech. Our research team and I have developed a
tool to help people choose a nursing home. I wrote this message in
this newsgroup since I believe that some of people here might be
interested in this project.

As many of you already know, choosing a nursing home is an emotion-
laden, difficult decision that can be often made under enormous stress
and time pressure. To make matters worse, there are so many things to
consider in choosing a good one among so many nursing homes. I noticed
that many people were misguided and ended up choosing a bad one for
their loved ones even though there is so much information on the
Internet these days.

Thus, we have developed a tool to help people crunch numbers and
information, so that they can make a better decision. We tried to use
some cutting-edge interactive technologies, called information
visualization and make the tool easy to use. However, we have focused
too much on new technologies, so we might fail to see the perspectives
of the real decision makers. Thus, we need your help. Please let us
have your opinions and insights, so that we can make this tool better.

In order to collect your opinions more effectively, we made the
following separate website:

http://nhc.hsi.gatech.edu/

This website has a couple of surveys to collect your experiences and
stories about how to choose the best nursing home. It also has a small
experiment that allows you to experience the tool and let us have your
feedback on how it works for you. Anybody who has previous experience
in choosing a nursing home, or anticipates having a need to do so in
the future is welcomed. It will take about 30 minutes to complete the
surveys and experiment.

Further more, if you complete the surveys and experiment, we would
like to provide you with a user account that allows you to use the
current version of our tool, which has the following complete
features.

1) An interactive nursing home locators: you can find nursing homes in
your neighborhoods with a zip code or street address.
2) Quality information of about 16,000 nursing homes: the website
provides the quality information of real nursing homes in the US.
3) The complete version of the visual tool: you can utilize the
complete version of the visual tool you just experienced.

It would provide you with actual helps to make a better and informed
decision, and you could have observe the evolution of the website
nurtured by your feedback and input.

Please also feel free to forward this message to someone who may be
interested in this study as well.

If you have any other questions, please email me.

Thank you very much once again for your time and consideration!!!

Best regards,

Ji Soo Yi

Here's the article:
http://chronicle.com/free/v54/i34/34b01701.htm

And here are the responses:

http://www.npr.org/blogs/talk/2008/05/dont_go_to_college.html

My response was at this point (more than 1/2 down):

1:43 AM ET | 05-13-2008

Aside from how much money you want to make and class snobbery, I think
one problem is, we Americans focus so much on the bottom line that
it's become OK to forget everything we learn each year so long as we
get A's. I.e., we should be telling kids "no, you may not keep video
games/TV/computers in your bedroom, because learning to love reading
for hours at a time is more important than anything else. Even if you
don't plan to go to college."

Example: In a Feb. 2005 TIME cover article, it said:

Kohn knows a college counselor hired by parents to help "package"
their child, who had perfect board scores and a wonderful grade-point
average. When it was time to work on the college essay, the counselor
said, "Let's start with a book you read outside of school that really
made a difference in your life." There was a moment of silence. Then
the child responded, "Why would I read a book if I didn't have to?"

(Not to mention that zero love of reading often means zero interest in
serious news stories - or the general world. That's hardly good for
this country's future.)

(End of response.)

Lenona.

I don't see how a college degree a waste of money. Two of my schoolmates are
chief engineers, another one owns a company with over 100 engineers and
support staff and just bought a mid rise building in San Francisco near
downtown. Two are lawyers, one owns a law firm, two medical doctors, three
are MBAs, two has their own architecture company, one was the top
entrepreneur in Hawaii, and so on. None collecting welfare or employment,
how can that be a waste of money?

You still could get a great college education in America with little money.
Much has to do with the person, not the schools. Two of smartest guys I know
came from really "shitty" junior high and high schools.

We still rent two boxes for our two cable-ready TV's because we get premium
channels and occasionally watch pay-per-view. However, I don't rent a cable
modem (I own one that is DOCSIS compliant), and I'm eventually going to get
a couple universal remotes and give the other ones back to the cable company
and stop paying monthly for them.

My comments on the handyman article should you attempt this repair
yourselves.
http://www.hammerzone.com/archives/plumbing/bathtub/faucet1/deltarot/replseal.html
http://tinyurl.com/4y3bwl

They were omnipotent when they said "we had to study the situation for
a few minutes before we realized that the brass collar was actually a
separate part from the rest of the brass valve housing" and "Once the
retaining collar was removed, the rest was obvious." The same ideas
were expressed in this thread.

But the actual steps they took in that handyman article were wrong not
only because they used pliars instead of a strap wrench but because
they took apart parts that even they didn't use so they never needed
to take apart those part in the first place. There was no need to pry
off the o ring on the tip of the valve and to pry off the brass
temperature limit valve either. They were just blindly taking things
apart because they could not because they should.

Otherwise it was a good article and the pictures are excellent.
Combined with this thread I would think someone could now do the job
in about ten minutes.
They even explained why there is a screw hole which isn't used in a
handle shower faucet but which is used in a knob shower faucet.

Further along these same lines....

"Crude oil gets all the headlines, but there's another fossil fuel
that's had an even more impressive run this year."

"Natural gas has surged 55 per cent in 2008, topping the 29-per-cent
rise in crude. And it could go higher still, especially if the summer
brings scorching temperatures that prompt homeowners to crank up their
air conditioners or hurricanes that knock out gas platforms in the
Gulf of Mexico."

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080514.wheinzl0515/BNStory/SpecialEvents2

With respect to gasoline, the U.S. national average for unleaded now
stands at $3.776, which puts it less than 23 cents away from the $4.00
mark (parts of NY, CA, CT and HI are already there, with MI and OH not
far behind).

Paul

Shop-Rite (in NJ) is offering to give you a $330 gift card for each $300
of your rebate check you apply (and cash for the remainder). So if you
get a $1200 check, you can get (for example) $660 in gift cards and $600
in cash.

I would not be surprised to see other stores doing the same, but with
grocery stores, you *know* you'll have no problem spending the gift cards!

As discussed several times already, this is not a frugal idea. You'll end
up spending more money in two ways:

1st, you will likely buy more (high-profit) items at the store where you
bought the gift card, simply because items that are a lower price at another
store are now LESS convenient to buy at the other store (easier just to put
everything on the card).

Also, you will have a tendency to spend more money, as you are not spending
MONEY, but rather charging purchases against the gift card, so you are less
aware of how much you are spending.

Shop-rite and all the other supermarkets offering this deal are not stupid.
The consumer is NOT going to benefit from this deal, the supermarket will,
even after the 10% incentive that they pitch in. -Dave

Well, in my case, I'm doing almost all my grocery shopping at Shop-Rite
because it is the cheapest of the supermarkets around here. (If it were
a clothing or electronics store, I would agree with you.)

This may be true of some people, but I still have the mindset that money
is money, no matter what the form. (It takes us forever to spend gift
cards for stores we don't use regularly, because we're trying to
maximize our return!)

Well, I will. YMMV.

Trust me, I'll spend exactly the same amount I would have otherwise, except
I'll be getting $30 worth of loss leaders on each gift card I buy. Don't
project your own buying patterns on everyone else.
