I agree, the only checks I write are to troglodytes, usually
government entities.

it may have certain markings on it removed. I've seen checkers hold it up to
the light to look for a watermark or a thin line or something. Maybe you
could look it up on the web about counterfeiting.

What do you mean "get going"? You enter your info and after they
confirm your bank account you can send and receive money. Why would
PayPal send you a debit card?

Paypal is pushing their card products. I get a spam screen
everytime I log in, and again when I pay for a purchase.

I have a local/long dist/DSL package with Embarq & noticed a couple of
calls on my long distance bill that I know I didn't make. It's an
unlisted number in a state where I don't know anyone, haven't had any
occasion to have any business dealings. The reason I noticed this is
that I make very few l/d calls and suddenly there was a larger amount
under the l/d than normal.

I called Embarq to advise them, and they said as I expected that "on
their records it looks like I made the calls" but as a one-time
courtesy they'll credit my account for the amount.

I went back several months online and didn't find any other mystery
calls but something else I didn't notice before is that they weren't
printing details of l/d calls on my bill. It refers me to the website
for details of the calls. When I asked about this, they said okay
they'd start printing my l/d details on the bill. This is the first
company I've dealt with that didn't do this by default. They do print
intrastate l/d calls by default. I asked if he knew why, he said it
was a cost-saving measure. When you do go to the online bill, they've
got it buried under several layers to finally see the phone number
which you have to go through every time you switch to view a different
billing period.

So either someone somehow made calls on my line or there's some issue
with their billing mis-assigning l/d charges to the wrong bill.
Wondering how the former would be accomplished, or if anyone has had
problems with the latter.

I appreciate your concern, but you should be concerned. My bank, after
Check 21 went into effect, does not send the cancelled checks back but
provides "images". Then, I noticed recently that even the images have
disappeared and they have abbreiviated entries for the "pay to" person or
entity and so you can't even see any notes you may have written on your
check, either.

Companies seem to be deliberately _hiding_ all kinds of things on their
website and take the attitude that YOU have to go to their website and YOU
find any new policy/proceedure that they add/change/etc., on your own, and
without notice. It helps them get away with murder.

I don't know what Embarq does for you, but I am looking for any and all
kinds of "annonymous" systems out there, such as pay-as-you-go such as
tracfone. I buy with cash a PIN number that adds minutes and they don't
know who I am (they can know who I call, fine), but I have worried less
about this system than almost anything else I buy. All the banks are
getting worse about a lot of things, too. I've even had trouble at the
USPS over stuff that I should not have trouble with.

Watch out for all that fine print and look for clauses that can give you
trouble.

And, another little doozie: we've noticed here, on certain web browsers on
certain hardware, on certain websites, that not all of certain kinds of
e-commerce show up correctly or completely, either, on what is displayed
on your screen. Guess what else? Same OS, same web browser, same browser
updates, and on different hardware, also gives different screens!!! And,
when we told one CS department about this, they blew us off. And, then,
weeks later they must have gotten tons of complaints because they fixed
it. Also no announcement, no "we're sorry we ignored you," nothing. Just
big 8,000 lb gorilla out there; take your chances.

Hacking and phreaking (hacking the phone company, etc) may be more
advanced than you think.

You should do the decent thing and set fire to yourself in 'protest' or sumfin.

Hi, I would like to know of a good american bank to use with bad or limited
credit history. I have used other check cards but they did not offer checks,
and found it difficult to even up with paypal. I also may have a mark or two
on chex systems that is preventing me from getting a good checking account
anywhere. I also have incurred debt at three loan establishments with
nothing much to show for it. Thanks, I am new hear but have participated

For information on banks, see http://www.bankrate.com but note that as
long as you are not applying for a credit line and you have proof of
your address, any bank should be willing to give you an account.

This is actually not true in the US. There is a bank network reporting

What Samantha says is true. 20+ years ago a jerk who was my b/f at
the time also messed up his chance of getting a checking account much
like this David person. Like an idiot I opened an account in both our
names. BIG MISTAKE. He soon started the same sloppy checking
practices as before. I learned my lesson and quickly closed that
account and sent him packing!

Until this David person mans up to his problem and fixes it, he'll
find getting a checking account almost impossible.

Well Phil, the good news is you won't have to go through this hell
much longer. Hope cramming for your finals works out.

I tried Ubuntu recently (you're not reading my posts). All fine until the
OS could not find my modem.

Before that, I had Red Hat's workstation (ver 3, Taroon), which also had
hardware incompatibility problems. Before that, I had every version of RH
back to ver 4.2, and Caldera OpenLinux (which installed on one box, and
crashed on install on another box), and several other distros all of which
crashed on install. The most compatible RHs were 5.2 and 6.2, and I was
successful in installing these on EVERY box (more than a dozen) AND got
the modem to work in ALL of these, plus the printer working.

Installing Windows XP
> or Vista properly can take hours,

I'm not ever going to use Vista. Put XP on two boxes here, less than one
hour, and modems work, box works, printer works.

If YOU want to chase all over hell for whatever you need, go ahead.

In contrast, installing

I've installed Red Hat 5.2 on a 486 box in 10 minutes. What is your
maximium? How many have you done?

Oh, no kidding?

(but the same can be said for windows, especially 64-bit

I spent MANY years on most of the Linux newsgroups back from 1999 to about
2004-5, and can tell you if anyone wants to search the archives...there is
a tone of woe out there. No less than Windows or Macs (and I read the Mac
newsgroups too for six months; they have problems, too).

> (triple-boots various linux distros with vista and xp)

Yeah, I've had that too. OS2, DOS, Linux, Windows (many).

Don't go pumping up stuff just because you had good luck with it. Just
like the newer versions of Windows, the newer versions of Linux had
upgrades in hardware stringency.

Oh, yes, there is a bug in the new Ubuntu multiboot option.

No, they do NOT have all the bugs out of it (Ubuntu), although they did
clean up the graphics glitches (but not the software glitches).

I'm really sorry, I like the idea of Linux, but I went back to my most
convenient OS: Win98SE, where they got the bugs down to the point where I
can put it on any of my boxes and know I'll get everything I want to work.
And, I do NOT like MS or Bill Gates, either.

There is an even worse situation: Lots of hardware (desktops and laptops)
coming out now is "hardwired" to an OEM version of Windows (XP, etc.)
written for exclusively THAT hardware, and you _cannot_ install any OTHER
OS even if you want to. I've heard this from several guys who tried it and
they are not dummies who never built boxes or installed OSes from a empty
HD.

Its another reason for people to go with "white boxes" which _should_ be
compatible with any OS (and its aps, with exceptions for undocumented
bugs, hardware incompatibilities, etc.). I've had various kinds of trouble
with boxes with IBM logos and peculiar MB layouts, specialized ribbons &
connectors, and weirdo POST sequences.

Go to your supplier who should know if Linux will load, and make sure he
tells you WHAT versions it will load, and where did he get his information
from. I've had all manner of combinations of Linux versions that installed
on Box A, B but not C, and D, and other versions that would install on C
and D, but not A and B.

Then, you can worry if the aps and applets will work, too. Back in the
earlier days (When MS IE was stable and Windows crashed) of Linux it was a
shock to users to find that Linux was stable, but the Netscape had more
bugs in it and crashed all the time on certain websites with certain
hardware. Its in the Linux NG archives back 7-8 years ago.

Oh, yes, I've used StarOffice (5.2) when Sun first gave it away, $10 for a
CDROM with versions for Linux, Windows, OS2, and Solaris. Tried all but
Solaris. Various bugs. Under OS2 StarOffice would crash as a webbrowser
on almost any but simplest websites. Better on Linux and Windows (in case
some of you didn't know that old StarOffice had web browswer capabilities).
