If you can't support a real entrepreneur, that is, leave a tip, you are
not frugal you are a cheapskate! If you could read - you'd see you get

it appears that you have an id attached to zecco; paid referral?

my utility budget plan: every 3 mons, my utility redoes it so that we never
get too far ahead or too far behind. i NEVER pay more than i would have
otherwise over the course of a year since it balances out at least once a
year. all i lose is a miniscule amount of interest. early in the budget
yr, i have a credit, but before the winter is over, i end up with a debit
which is equalized out over the next 3 mons. so i don't know what your
utility is doing.

I noticed at my local McDonalds that there is a limit of 10
cheeseburgers or double that you can order at one time at the driveup
window. I am not sure why.

I think you mean "loss" leaders? Any of the "value menu" items could
be considered a loss leader "if" you don't buy a beverage or fries to
go with it. The profit margin on sodas and side orders is definitely
higher than the entrees; even higher if the person behind the counter
convinces you to upgrade your order (suggestive selling is a perfect
means of increasing sales; a FF store I worked in way back when saw
sales increase by 35% after I emphasized this practice to the
employees). Of course there has to be a motivation for them as well
like weekly prizes or recognition. One D.A. manager during our
meetings would say something like "we need to raise the sales so "I"
can get a bigger bonus".

Perhaps huge orders hog up too much time for a service that is supposed
to be quick pass through and considered inconsiderate to all the other
cars in the line?

Trivia question relating to this thread. Name the largest fast food
company in the world in terms of location and sales.
Hints: It is not McDonald's. The company is based in the U.S.

That's a trick question. The largest brand is probably McDonald's. But
the largest company could have more than one brand (i.e. restaurants by
more than one name).

I made a v-shaped fixture out of 2x4's to hold wood for splitting that
works quite well.

The base is three 3 2x4's in the shape of an arrowhead.

At the point of the arrowhead, there's a vertical 2x4 about 1 foot high.
From the top of this, there are 45 degree diagonals going down to the
arrowhead to form a v-shape for holding a log.

The shaft of the arrow is about 2 or 3 feet long and has notches for
wedging a loose 2x4 to hold the log tightly against the v-shape.
You just hold your foot on a loose 2x4 to clamp the log in place.

Then you are free to pound the wedge with your maul without worrying
about the log moving around on you.

Oh great, Hal Lindsey. The author of "The Late Great Planet Earth"
himself. He has, essentially, been making up and publishing crazy,
fringe ideas and calling "prophecy" since 1970 when that book came
out. How many of them have come true?

I vaguely remember hearing that he had at one point essentially
repented of making this kind of wild speculation, but if he did,
then he's still doing it anyway.

Look at marine watermakers, designed for yachts. You can find 12, 24, and, 120,
and 240V models.

As far as I know, desalination takes a lot of energy. If you're talking
about planning for an emergency, you'd have to store fuel to use in the
desalination process. Why not just store an equivalent amount of fresh
water?

If you are planning for an emergency where you have plenty of energy
available (maybe the emergency won't interrupt power from a utility, or
maybe you have solar or wind power), you could use a home distiller.
Their output is typically measured in hours per gallon, but if you just
need water for drinking and cooking in an emergency, maybe that is OK.
There might be better options, but a distiller is the most obvious thing
I could think of. As a bonus, you'd be able to use it to make really
pure water for drinking and for cooking even when it's not an emergency.

A water still (or distiller) isn't in any way similar to a generator.
That said, I did find these using google.

Waterwise 1600 non-electric Portable water distiller

Rainmaker(tm) 550 Solar Water Distiller

You can try it yourself...

New-tech reverse osmosis desalinators use a LOT less energy than stills. In
fact, you can get models that you can operate by hand (though they're not
"family sized" as requested by the OP). OTOH, one of those for each family
member will help keep them fit and teach them the value of water in an
emergency! :-)

I hate to tell you, but that is exactly what Sam's does!!! They are
"in business, for business". Many of their goods are marked as
"packaged for resale" or whatever. 'Course, it's good for Sam's that
they also sell to me directly.
All those corner stores are pretty much convenience stores. If, as
you say, the customers can't get around to other stores, then someone
has to be able to sell to them. Buying at Sam's might be cheaper than
buying at some wholesaler (or the store owners would buy wholesale
too), so it works out for everyone.

Nor should they even try. Government can't run a business, as we have

Well-placed charity is never a bad idea.

I have the same understanding, but they recently started accepting
accounts for small businesses, and they gave me one. I used my tax
number instead of my social security number. My checks have my
personal name and business name on them. And I can cash checks written
to my business name.

They used to be a open to employees and their family members. Then,
later they opened up to all Washington state residents. My other
credit union is the same way in terms of Washington residents, but no
business names. They will allow me to put my business name on checks,
but they will not allow me to accept checks written to my business
name. So, I just have my personal account with them.

The regulations on who can join have loosened up over the years. My
credit union was originally only open to employees and retirees of what
was then Pacific Telephone Co. later it was extended to anyone working
in telecom and now it is open to anyone who lives or works in a city
where they have a branch.
