Hi all,

Great to know there is such an active forum in India to articulate its
energy future and sustainable living initiatives. Incidentally, I
returned back to India earlier this year following a long innings at
CERA. My interest area is on World Energy Assessment and how the
results hold pertinence for India. Please connect with me directly if
any one in the group's membership shares the same interest.

For those who are interested, The Global Energy Assessment
( www.globalenergyassessment.org ) will present a First Order Draft
around March 1, 2009 .Prof. Thomas Johannson, Senior Advisor, Energy
and Climate Change, UNDP & Co-recipient, Nobel Peace Prize to the
IPCC, 2007, will be India speaking at the Green Energy Summit:
http://www.greenenergysummit.com based on that work. Should any of
you be attending the summit, please connect with me, so we can hook up
early on.

Good to see this stuff finally coming to light. Its a bit brief on the
methods used in trials, but its an excellent contribution and
explanation of concepts that seem to puzzle so many.

I was about to say this belongs in another group, but it can save many
people a lot of money on prescriptions.

Human organs have a very short "shelf-life" once they're outside the
body, so I don't think storage fees apply. They put the thing into a
cooler and ship it to the recipient, so I suspect the total cost is
the baggie, the ice, and the cooler. Not exactly big bucks.

I think the problem is much more widespread than we all thought. My dogs
got sick that year. All are well now, but it was a scary time. I also
feed my cats science diet. But they also get a can of friskies in the AM
and one in the PM too. Buying it by the case in Sam's club is a decent
deal.

I filled up at a fairly new looking Marathon gas station yesterday
morning, then went inside to use the bathroom. I was told "We don't
have one."

Now I had my receipt in hand, so obviously I was a customer. This
was also one of those places that sells loads of food and "huge gulp"
type drinks.

Obviously, they would have to have a bathroom for employees. If it
was an old gas station, I suppose I could see why they might not have a
bathroom if they didn't want the expense of making sure the bathroom met
newer standards, such as handicapped access. However, this thing is no
more than a few years old.

Is this a new trend? (my bladder is hoping not) The only gas station
where I've seen this before was one that OBVIOUSLY didn't have a
bathroom - it was a tiny shack about 8' long and 5' wide, with just
enough room for the attendant. This was a full sized one where it looks
like they took the space normally reserved for a bathroom and used it
instead to showcase merchandise.

I thought there was some law somewhere that retail establishments had
to provide for bathrooms for the public. I bet that person was
messing with you.

In Europe they have pay bathrooms. And that is OK with me. If you've got to
go, you've got to go!

I would rather have pay bathroom available than no bathrooms.

I think you should call both Marathon and the state Attorney General.
The building code probably requires a bathroom for the public.

I travel extensively, and I have not seen any kind of trend towards
eliminating bathrooms from convenience stores or gas stations. I
have seen more and more have these rooms locked where you have
to ask for a key.

I ran into only 2 gas stations that I can recall that didn't have
bathrooms. One was in Port Arthur, Tx, just after a hurricane,
and the city water was not working yet. The other was in
Waterloo, IA, and their sewer was backed up, so they have the
bathrooms closed. Perhaps the location you were at was in the
process of remodeling or had some problem like this.

At any rate, there are always more stations and fast food outlets
that do have bathrooms, plus rest stops on the Interstates.

Yep. But try to tell him that, and he will change the subject.

Is a spondulick every form of money other than currency? If so, then
what you say is just plain wrong. I can spend my virtual dollars via my
debit card at par. I can create virtual dollars via my credit card at
par.

OH. OK. So you are NOT talking about the USA?

Nope. Never has happened. The dollar value of assets, whether buildings,
inventory or whatever is noted on balance sheets.

What are some examples of spondulicks on the balance sheets of American
companies?

Prices go up and down. To borrow the terms inflation and deflation as a
manner of speaking about individual price categories is not illuminating.

The value of risk arbitrage is principally set by ratings agencies.
In fact, risk isn't really tied to currency at all, it's modelled as an
outcome and assigned a probability.

Collateralized Debt Obligations.

While spondulicks are indeed fictional, the concept can help the
average person to make sense of a very confusing situation.

Spondulicks are dollar denominated securities that circulate just
like money. What makes this so insidious is that these are both
called "dollars," albeit very different kinds.

Back when the M&A activity first got going, it was common for
entire corporations to be purchased with "spondulicks," aka
"chinese currency," aka stock for stock exchanges.

It is still relatively easy to convert real dollars to
spondulicks, just buy stock or bonds.

Spondulick<-->spondulick exchanges are very common, for example
day stock trading.

The big problem is trying to convert spondulicks back into real
dollars, particularly for individuals, at anything close to par.
This generally requires very arcane institutions and
organizations such as banks and brokerages, which generally
charge high fees for the service, when it can be done at all. A
major problem now is the wildly varying conversion rate between
real and virtual dollars [aka spondulicks], e.g. 500 point daily
swings in the DJIA.

Operationally the "bank note era," when many US banks issued
their own notes of dubious value has been recreated, only better
in that the need to print anything has been eliminated.

for some background see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banknotes
http://www.jstor.org/pss/2205280

Gresham's law states "bad money drives out good money," and this
seems to be what is occurring in the current economy.

Asking the question "are we talking about real money or
spondulicks," can help clarify many apparently contradictory
situations. For example, how can the US stock market be going up
when the US economy is contracting, and there is [apparently] a
real dollar deflation. IMNSHO the answer is that the US stock
market is now largely denominated in/dominated by spondulicks,
not [real] dollars.

Much of the recent Treasury/FRB activities also start to make
some sense if these are regarded as efforts to "manage" the real
dollar <--> spondulick exchange rates, much as the Dollar<-->Euro
and Dollar<-->Yen rates are managed.

On another level this is just so much BS, where huge sums of
[real] taxpayer money continue to disappear with no
accountability or results/benefits to the majority of
citizens/taxpayers.

I've tried Ubuntu, and while I think it is a great basic OS, it
didn't work out for me because the computer I was trying it on did not
have any connection to the OS.

I needed something that would play various multimedia files (h.264,
mpeg4, etc.) right out of the box.

Instead of basic Ubuntu, I went with a variant that was developed
exactly for this purpose: Linux Mint. Right out of the box, it will
play pretty much any video file you throw at it.

This may have already been suggested, but I cut the stamps off then use
a glue-stick to paste them onto the new envelope. Maybe it's a local
thing or maybe it's that there's no tell-tale tape showing around the
stamp, but the mail is accepted and sent with no problems.

Hello all,

We attended a short class on how to make cheese last night. It turned
out very nice.

We did a very basic recipe.
1 gal milk (we used whole milk)
1 tsp calcium chloride (because we didn't h have raw milk)
1/2 cup lemon juice (to seperate the curds and wey)

After we pressed it through the cheese cloth, we salted it to taste.

Unsalted, it tasted like flour paste. It wasn't very pleasant at
all. However, after it sat for a few minutes with the salt mixed in,
the flavor was much better.

It made about a pound - the size of softball.

How many people make their own cheese here?
What knid do you make?

Yogurt cheese--put some yogurt in something like a coffee cone/filter
(or strainer lined with filter paper, or whatever), set over a glass to
catch the liquid (which is healthy to drink), and put in the fridge
overnight.

In some localities, having running gear, hitch, and lights makes
the unit qualify as an RV rather than a home, so you don't have
to pay real estate taxes on it.

I hope everyone has discovered the beauty of an "Air Lock".
We finally added one that doubles as a Mud room. the wood stove even can
be loaded from it. and a great place to feed the cat. She has a pet port
into it, but not the main house.
