I haven't found anything online about this, but on one of those shows
about cool technology on one of the Discovery Channel channels, or maybe
National Geographic, so something similar, they showed student houses at
a university in Europe. They were tiny detached houses, each something
like 110 sq ft. They made very good use of space, and seemed quite
comfortable.

There was a separate bathroom with a toilet and sink. The bathroom was
waterproof and had a drain in the floor, so it also served as the shower
(and that also made it easy to clean). The kitchen had, I seem to
recall, a two burner stove, small fridge, and microwave.

The beds folded into the wall. There were two of them, big enough that
four people could sleep in the house, although two people would be more
comfortable probably.

There was a built-in flatscreen TV for entertainment.

There was a table that could be used for dinning or as a work area, and
it folded away when not in use.

It seemed to work very well. There wasn't a lot of space total, but
because of the way things folded away to reconfigure the space, there
seemed to be plenty for whatever you needed at any given time.

The beds could be used for seating, too, and with it configured for
maximum seating, they showed a student having a party. He managed to
get something like 9 guests in there, with everyone being reasonably
comfortable.

Isn't that a 1 br apartment?
I call a 1400 sqft house a 1 br apt with three rooms of
storage. A 84 sqft house is a good idea. No accumulation of
stuff, and no one staying over ;-)

Yeah, saw that, but an RV or trailer makes a lot more sense because its easier to move too.

Beyond that, who cares? I live on my sailboat in Olympia, and anytime
I feel like it, I can go "off grid." I barely use any electricity as
it is. Those of us who live on boats or in self contained trailers
knows this is not newsworthy. For the rest of the idiot sheep out
there who cannot live without all the "luxuries" of "civilized life"
well it is newsworthy. Probably for powerboaters too who can't live
without huge engines and generators and whatnot.

I am happy whatever I live in , spent years in a caravan , lived under a
tarp for many months , in a bus converted to mobile home and now have a
house , Im adaptable , easily pleased and love the convienience of
travel and easy accomodations .

It still saddens me to see folk who live in shitty cramped conditions
out of nescesity rather than by choice .

with so many billions being spent on killing the poorest folk there is
in othe r lands , surely a bit of that $$ can bes pent either fixing or
eradicating the poor at home ?

I've been through 5 days of Hell with AT$T. I signed up for the
Internet, Dish, and Phone on the 10th. After an 8 hour wait on the
13th, the phone guy shows up whining about his long day, and with an
attitude. He tells me I ain't getting internet yet. That's someone
else.

I spend two hours trying to find out about the internet. Monday, they
tell me (the 16th).

The Dish was supposed to be installed today between noon and 5:30.
The joker shows up at 5:45, doesn't have the proper stand, and wanders
off to get one. Not! After two hours, I get through to Dish AT$T,
and get rudely told that they cancelled my order. They don't have the
stand and won't be getting one. The attitude was unbelievable.

They also: Sent me two modems, not one. Got my phone number wrong.
Could never find my new account information. Badmouthed each other.
Were jackasses.

I put in a complaint to AT$T, Consumer affairs, and here.

Be careful signing up with those jerks. While some people may be fine
with them, I had the worst week ever!

I'm just going to get my phone through Comcast, along with everything
else!

As a dry cleaner I would not reccomend trying to wash them at home.
The fact that they contain wool (even if it is only 10 percent) tells
me that the pants will most likely shrink or be permanently wrinkled
or both. If you insist on washing them, please, only cold water!!!!
How much do they charge for drycleaning a pair of pants where you
live??

Things go in circles, don't they. The point is, China has screwed up
the deal. How long would it take you to forget the neighborhood
grocery that was later found to be selling you poisoned products? It
took at least two decades for "Made in Japan" to mean quality here in
the States, and perhaps that is what happened in England as well with
German products. It won't be something that happens quickly like one
poster said in this threa. It will take a long time, and during that
time there will be other countries that will end up being the low-cost
manufacturing partner for the world.

For more than 30 years the export to and consumption of China made
goods around the world had grown by leaps and bounds. In spite of the
latest campaign to smear not only these products but also to smear a
whole people and country the trade figures have gone ever higher.
Hundreds of millions of people worldwide are certainly no fools and

Your administration has chosen to politicize the trade imbalance. The
inconsistent and strategically incomprehensible attacks are on many

there are no more cases beyond the few thus far. It will have
disappeared from the headlines once the new school year starts or
sooner when another Bush scandal erupts.

In this lucrative environment there will be those who cheat. Cheating
requires two parties. The producer and the distributor since the
producer does not have direct contact or access with customers abroad.
As you (D) said cheating happens everywhere* and we will have to deal
with this as an ordinary crime be this be in the US or in China. It
is there but it is not widespread. My objection is the racist
sentiment that is often just under the surface of many in the States
that tars a whole people as sneaky, untrustworthy and evil. It is
futile and pointless to try to change the minds of such people. Its
in their DNA. To save a lot of argument I ask them to buy only Made
in USA.

If you have ever done any high school science courses the very first
paragraph of the original report on cardboard treated with caustic
soda and mixed with fatty pork should have set off your antenna right
away. Caustic soda is DRANO is sodium hydroxide. Handle that and you
get alkali burns on your hands. Wash it off promptly and your skin
feels soapy because the lye would have already reacted with the fat in
your skin to make soap. Cooking does not neutralize it. Read my

On a related note, I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and didn't see the Nu-Kote
remanufactured inkjet cartridges they used to sell. My only choice there
now seems to be the HP cartridges, which are quite expensive. I'll have

so? Look, pick up a copy of Computer Chips at your local
PC Shop. THere are several surplus shops in Portland and
Vancouver that sell cables at reasonable prices. You got
Wacky Willies and Surplus Gizmos to name two. THen if you
are near Corniluis PAss road you go to PCH Cables. They
have a well stocked store and the lowest prices on new
cables anywhere.

And Free Geek is great. Think about vollintering(sp) there
sometime. But their stock is limited to what happens to
come in their door. They also don't always know what they
get in. I was working in recieving one day and they got
a bunch of SATA power adaptors and data cables. THey
just recycled them.

Just a warning about the "Chillow" pillow. First of all, my husband
bought me 4 of them, when I was going thru some medical difficulties
that caused me to be unbearably hot. I rotated them during the night,
and they were HEAVENLY!!!
However, I made the mistake of sleeping on my side, with a Chillow in
direct contact with my ear. I ended up with a ruptured eardrum, due to
fluid collecting as a result of my ear getting too cold. The pain was
unbelievable.
So please, the chillow is great... just don't sleep with it directly
on your ear.

depending on the condition of the blade, you sometimes make
microscopic cuts in the skin. If your skin is sweaty, you are
introducing those toxins right into those microscopic cuts.
A swipe or two of bar soap does cost a few cents, but there is
something to be said for personal hygiene.
I suppose if I didn't brush my teeth until "fur" grew on them, the fur
would form a paste that I could brush my teeth with ... thereby saving
on toothpaste! (Sorry to be gross - trying to make a point). Sometimes
we can carry frugality a BIT too far!!!

The second shave is accomplished with a razor that is less than a week or
two old, and when it is time to replace it, I toss the one in the shower,
and cycle the one from the sink to the shower.

I seem to get the best life out of the Gillette disposables, the key is to
rinse them well and keep them dry.

I usually do not use aftershave, but on the occasions that I do, I prefer a
more subtle scent, so I dilute 1 part aftershave with 3 parts rubbing
alcohol and keep this in a small spray bottle.

I don't see what the big deal is. I have read plenty of comments from

No one is saying to "buy Made in USA only" . . . I think this Chinese
PaPaPeng misunderstands.

The fact is, people are starting to say "buy from Quality suppliers
only." Until China has its forecasted huge improvement in quality,
this will hurt their export market. And the argument that China can
become like Japan makes no sense to me. That's because the culture in
Japan lends itself to high-quality manufacturing (the same with
Europe, the States, etc). The culture in China has shown the world
that deception, lies, cheating, etc. is ingrained in society. You
can't have drastic change occur overnight when the issue stems from
culture. It will take far longer than some posters expect for China to
change its stripes. We are still at the tip of the iceberg as far as
new revelations go about Chinese tainted products and quality
problems.

I'm sure that there is plenty of deception and cheating in the USA, in
Europe, etc, but there has been enough time to separate those
practices from the product quality that results. We still see the
occasional apartment building crumble because it was built sub-
standard by cheating contractors . . . but when you go out for a
burger, you're not getting any cardboard in your meat.
