I think you always been pretty happy with the Mini, or you drool over
American cars? I know they are popular in a few places other than
America, like Venezuela and the Middle East where gas is cheaper than
water.

The Chinese want them big too, but that's to be expected for such
short people.

I loved my Honda 600. The only problem was the 50,000 mile crankshaft. I wish I
still had the car - It would make a great electric conversion, using that stack
of big-block marine nicads I got off freecycle.

Public transportation wins. BUS vs. SUV...

You are not at the top of the food chain as hard as you try.

I laugh at your pussy SUVs when I'm on the bus.

'Mini' is a German car now :-( It's owned by BMW.

The original Mini was undeniably popular, but there were lots of bigger
cars popular with us Brits, for example the Ford Cortina (still small by
your measure though).

Some people here in the UK still like big American cars, but since the
financial collapse a lot of people are going for the most economical car
they can get. A big car is still a status symbol here, and now even
more so than ever. Not only does it say "I can afford a big car", it
also says "I can afford the petrol" and "I can afford the tax". IMO it
also says "I am a ******" YMMV.

Well, don't place all the blame on the Americans. ;)

Much of the blame lies with Globalization and the worshiping of the
dollar, euro and pound.

I was surprised to hear that you got like 1,000 Gated Communities
there... What will it be next, back to Feudalism?

A guy on a bike would the equivalent of a serf, right?

Yes, it does seem to be going that way. The gap between rich & poor
here is widening.

Depends on the bike ... and the guy. David Cameron who might just be
our Prime Minister after tomorrow is known to ride a bicycle to work
(albeit with one of his minions driving behind in an SUV carrying his
paperwork for him). Somehow I doubt he'll be cycling to work if he gets
to move house to Downing Street on Friday.

Range Rovers are not Supersized Unnecessary Vehicles the way our
behemoths are. I'd drive one if I went to the jungle.

That isnt viable in some jurisdictions, the cost of the
SUV registration and liability insurance wise is much
more than for the tiny hatch and isnt viable for rare use.

It isnt even that viable to say share one of the behemoths
with some of the neighbours either, because they will
mostly all want to use it at the same time and if its at
all elderly, the maintenance is a problem too.

I currently pay $200 extra a month as additional principal on my
mortgage. This adds up to two additional mortgage payments a year.

Rather than pay the $200 a month, would it be better to do a lump sum
payment of $2,400 at the beginning of each year, then pay the $200/
month to myself in a bank account--to save up for the following year's
lump sum payment? I have the $2,400 now, so I could start "today" and
make it an annual thing.

Clearly, it would be beneficial to do the lump sum vs. the monthly
payment to knock down the outstanding loan amount quicker. But how
much more beneficial? Significant enough to make it worthwhile over
the course of a 30 year fixed mortgage? How can I calculate the lump
sum savings vs. monthly payments?

Forgot to say that my goal here is to pay off my mortgage ASAP. I
don't at all buy the statement that "a house is a great tax shelter" /
will save considerably on taxes. Perhaps that's true if one has crazy
ARM rates (I have a 30 year fixed) or a Jumbo mortgage where the
interest payments are far higher than what I pay. Could have gotten a
15 year fixed, but I felt more comfortable being able to moderate how
much, when, and if any, additional principal payments I make (who
knows where anyone's job situation will end up in this economy).

There are tons of free mortgage amortization calculators on the web.
Download one of them and you can easily use it to run whatever numbers
you want through it in order to see what advantages and disadvantages
there are toward paying your mortgage off in one shot or over a period
of time.

It depends on the terms of your mortgage/ For instance, if your mortgage
calculates interest daily on the outstanding balance, the sooner you pay off
a bit of the principal, the less you'll pay in interest overall. My guess
is that if you have $2,400 now and your goal is to pay off as quickly as
possible, put the $2,400 toward the principal. Then, instead of "paying
yourself" $200 a month so that you can dump another $2,400 on the principal
in a year, put the $200 against the principal every month instead of
waiting.

All kinds of things complicate the situation. If you save $200/month in an
interest bearing account, you'll earn some interest. But you'll pay taxes
on the interest earned. But you'll pay more mortgage interest. But your
tax deduction for mortgage interest will be higher. You probably want to
minimize the mortgage interest you pay, maximize the interest you earn, and
minimize your taxes.

These are conflicting goals. If your primary goal is to pay off the
mortgage as quickly as possible regardless of tax effects and possible
interest earnings, the best strategy to pay as much as you can against the
principal as soon as you can. If you want to quantify the relative merits
of various scenarios, you can set up an amortization schedule in a
spreadsheet on that computer you typed your question on, try various payment
schedules, and see how each one works out. Or you could try some of the
online mortgage calculators, but I don't know if any of them would take the
terms of your particular mortgage into account.

A bit of a story. When I bought my first house, we had a "dry closing" -
all the paperwork was filled out and signed, but no money was released to
the builder because not everything was finished. State law said that if the
money hadn't been released, the mortgage company couldn't charge me interest
(because the mortgage company still had the money) but I had to make
payments on the principle until it was. So the first month statement comes
in the mail, and it was for something like 25 cents, or 50 cents, I don't
remember exactly it was more than thirty years ago. Anyway, I was young and
foolish and didn't have much money, so I paid that month's principal only.
I could have made the full monthly payment (the then princely sum of $550)
and if I had, I would have prepaid a boatload of principal payments and
shortened the mortgage term accordingly.

Forget about nightmares with the Oil Spill Monster, for which
obviously many people take a chill pill...

This is the real monster that we are creating, though it may passed

I put this note at the local forum to explore how's the jungle out
there...

I WANT TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM

Have you noticed today fewer cars and more bikes out there? Is it
"safe" for me to come out of the cage and ride a bike like a vehicle?
I don't mean on the edge where I'm also harassed. I mean TAKING THE
LANE, and let the cars worry about me, not me about them. Are the
bicycles coming to Miami Beach or not? I hope it's not that pathetic
bike path out there, full of sand, pedestrians and dogs with BLINDING
WASTEFUL lights to make it feel like a "near death experience"... You
know, people say that when you die you follow a path with blinding
lights, and this gives me the creeps. ;)

I think that uses Honda's Variable Valve Timing tuned for optimal
mileage. The Civic HX used the same technology, I think that works
better in the smaller car. Seems like they had some emissions issue with
that also, perhaps NOx.

Next I like the 3 cyl. Geo Metro.

I have a friend who has 3 of them. At least that's what it takes to keep
one on the road. He has a hard time getting them to pass emissions.

I'm looking forward to the next generation of electrics. Eventually
mass production will drive down battery costs. I haven't seen a Tesla
yet, but what a dream that car appears to be.

I think some time down the road you might see more hybrids of
differing designs. Imagine a stirling or a diesel hybrid, but battery
cost has to come way down.

My gas solution is just to work at home, an increasingly popular option.

Jeff

Some of us like to take our cars to the track, 70 MPH on the Grand
Course at VIR doesn't cut it. The way I see it, 400 HP and 20-23 MPG is
more efficient than 130 HP and 30-40 MPG.

Even I don't find the need to the Colombian jungle, clear up the
trees, and start a revolution. Too much competition and you can better
results at home. ;)

Anyway, what we need is HIGHER GAS PRICES & SPACE... And since the
politicians will not risk their political, survival the first solution
is out of the question. As for SPACE, once you calm down traffic, such
as in Key West, all kinds of vehicles, including EVs, scooters and
bicycles show up.

In Miami Beach where I live is still much of a jungle, except for
South Beach, where you see some bike paths (not a solution), bike
lanes and and some bicycles braving the roads. Around here it's
probably safer to go to the Colombian jungle.

You know, the OIL SLICK MONSTER is important because that way we have
someone to blame. Have you realized NOBODY ADMITS RESPONSIBILITY, so

I've thought this title may have more punch. Chill pill here means,
"you don't give a shit," so let's be honest about it.

You give a shit or you don't, and what are we doing --if anything-- to
change the situation. I will take a chill pill now, I mean to be able
to sleep.

Not here in the UK it isn't.

I think you always been pretty happy with the Mini, or you drool over
American cars? I know they are popular in a few places other than
America, like Venezuela and the Middle East where gas is cheaper than
water.

The Chinese want them big too, but that's to be expected for such
short people.

Oh c'mon, there's this campaign led by Christians against the most
respectable scientist ever to set foot on this filthy, corrupt,
violent and petty little world.

Darwin was merely describing nature, not justifying the predation of
which the Christians are part. God was the one that set up the game of
predator vs. prey if we are to believe the Christians and there's no
evolution and survival of the fittest.

I find the motives behind such campaign very fishy.
