LOL. In the 50s, overcast, our creek is running near full with normal
rushing water sounds. No traffic sounds, no airplane sounds, no need
for headphones. Cardinals, bandit birds, a funny little brown bird
that has the shape of a flying golfball, a couple of squirrels trying
to avoid joining family in the freezer. Gorgeous green mosses and
reddish brown fungus on the dead tree branches.

Harry, I'd be envious except for the North Alabama part, although,
goodness knows it's beautiful. I was curious about what music fellow
frugalistamos might be wearing on that fine Sunday afternoon. The
headphones are by preference, although, they do insulate somewhat from
whatever inanity DW may be scanning on teevee. In "the day", if we heard
a motor vehicle, we could assume its occupants to be coming to see us or
to be lost. Alas, that day is gone, long gone; now, we have "neighbors":
Everybody still wants to move to Florida and then complain about it. Of
course, those with functioning brains join the "half-backs" and
relocate, leaving us with the truly dysfunctionals.... (sigh). Although,
I have heard (with great delight) reports that the state's population is
decreasing.
Yeah, cardinals; red-bellied, downy, and pileated woodpeckers;
titmouses; chickadees; etc. Saw my first palm warbler of the season (a
wintertime bird down hyunh) yesterday. I wonder whether your golfball
might be a wren. The "winter wren" (Stokes, 1st ed. pg357), a wintertime
visitor to the Southeast, resembles nothing more than.

low 50's today here in RI, but very rainy. Promises to be mid 40's and
clear the rest of the week.

Many cardinals, purple & gold finches, chickadees & tit mouses with a
few red-bellied and downy woodpeckers, but no pileated. Haven't seen
one of them since we left TN about 10 years ago.

Oddly, we still have juncos that tend to arrive for the first frost and
leave around the last frost with robins arriving this week. The two
tend not be around at the same time.

Music wise, we started a Sirius satellite radio subscription in early
December. One of the best investments we ever made. It's on a good 8
hrs/ day. Hardly any time for TV anymore.

The OP said it was clogged and wouldn't shut off. Plenty of
people cannot imagine opening up a mechanical device to see
what's going on.

You can probably buy a budget netbook for around $500 these days. If
you get one with the Linux OS, you can obtain free word processing
software.

Canon NoteJet:

However nowadays a $300 desktop replacement laptop, or a netbook, and a
portable printer like the HP OfficeJet H470 ($150) would be a better
choice. Add Open Office.

Hell of a lot less than that, actually.

You can with Win too.

What do you mean? In today's parlance, a "portable" application is
one which, once resident on a portable medium (cd, memory stick), can be
run on any computer with a compatible operating system without need for
"installing" it. Or by "portable" you may mean "resident on my local
system", as opposed to Google's online monstrosity (for example). Of
those there is a multitude if free programs. Whichever, your question
would be better put (and answered) in the alt.comp.freeware newsgroup.
An archive search will reveal many discussions of the subject as well as
recommendations. You also would do well to peruse the
pricelesswarehome.org W3 site. Be aware that, if file compatibility is a
significant factor, you are pretty well limited to M$Word. Early on and
despite the best -- if belated -- efforts of third parties, M$
established itself as the de facto standard among business users.
Nowadays, the M$ office "suite" pretty well rules the roost because,
although most of the freeware offerings do a pretty good job of reading
Word documents, few -- if any -- can actually _write_ Word documents due
to its proprietary (copyrighted) format. Genuine editions of M$Office
may be had fairly inexpensively on eBay; you'll want a post-1997
edition. If file compatibility is not an issue, then you'll do far far
better to check out the freeware sources.

In this economy, no degree is worth it. Go ahead and rack up
35,000-40,000 per year for an undergrad degree (if mommy and daddy
aren't paying for it), and then see what type of job you get. I'm sure
you'll be able to pay off that quarter of million dollar loan
(basically a mortgage with no house), and still live comfortably. Yup.

And this is coming from someone who has two advanced degrees above a
bachelors. I wish I had known. But, America still "spins" the idea
that you need a college education to "make it." That's crap. Look at
our illegal alien friends, they come here, work, pool their money,
start or buy businesses, and are way ahead of us American citizens
still toiling away in schools and racking up student loans. College
education, that is so 90's.

Some people seem to think that unless you pay top dollar for whatever, it
isn't worth it. I'm sure there are some schools that cost that much, and
I'm equally sure that some fields of endeavor, or some organizations,
require a degree from those schools. But a couple of years in a community
college and two more at State U. don't cost anywhere near that much, and
depending on what you've chosen to study, can be well worth while.

Then the solution is obvious, isn't it? It's never (well, until you're over
60 or 70 years old, maybe) to start working and start or buy a business,
etc. You can do that whether you have a degree or not.

You better tell me what kind of politics, monkey. (I call you so since
you are aware of evolution, overpopulation and abuse of resources).

The only POLITICS in the jungle ruled by the HUNGRY LION is that of
waste. The more waste the better. Frugality is not politics, FRUGALITY
IS MORALITY.

I think you should go and worship Jesus if you are that stupid.

I hope it's this one...

(This is the "best place" to ride a bike in Miami, perhaps the only
one other than a few short bike lanes and mixed paths you must share
with people and dogs)

While posting on message forums can be a useful way to bring awareness
to issues, getting out and fighting it directly is the real way to
make change. Both work hand in hand (see our recent discussion on
social media whores… I mean, experts).

I reply:

I do not advice anyone to go out there ALONE and do the fight. If it
ain't in a group, a brain spilled over the road is a terrible thing to
waste. Instead we go in groups, TAKE THE LANE, and be ready for the
WORST, even if it means dying for a cause. The media vultures are
irrelevant… They only go when there are dead bodies. WE GO
INTERNATIONAL.

Here's some news from the jungle, where the reckless drivers often,
too often, get away with crime…

(I quote)

A mass of bicyclists stood at the crest of the Bear Cut Bridge in Key
Biscayne Sunday morning, thinking of the fellow cyclist who died
here.

Forty-four-year-old Christophe LeCanne was killed by a hit-and run
driver who police say was drunk and speeding. His co-workers say he
left behind a wife and two children.

The cyclists know next time anyone of them could lose their lives.
Some have already been hit. Several cyclists showed CBS4's Natalia Zea
their scars and scabs after being hit by cars. The cyclists say it
happens all the time.

This issue is getting hotly debated --and very entertaining-- at the

Prepare them for what? It seems to me that the procedure you

I must confess that I was a little curious to what purpose he was
putting the eggs but then realized that I probably don't want to know.
It seems to me that, unless one is deliberately whipping egg whites for
a meringue (for example), the objective is to minimize the amount of air
incorporated into them which shaking in a jar seems to defeat.

I normally cook a frittata for breakfast; sauteed vegetables with
whipped eggs poured in. Whipped eggs also are needed to make scrambled
eggs, quiche, or omlettes.

There are more ways to prepare eggs than fried.

I don't use enough milk or cream to keep it from going bad before I use it
up. They'd also add calories.

I did remove the shell, of course, but didn't need to break the yokes; they
did that quite easily in the first few seconds of shaking.

Bacon is on the side; the eggs go over diced potatos, jalapeno peppers,
bell peppers, habaneros (if I have them), onions, mushrooms, and cheese
goes on top. Good thing I only cook on weekends... :-)

Sunny Sunday afternoon; 79(F) outside. Birds chirping, doves calling,
an occasional bark from one of the neighbors' dogs, and in the distance,
the sound of light traffic. Occasionally an airplane.

Yikes! Where do you both live where it's that unbearably hot in
January? I only ask so I can avoid that part of the world like the
plague. I'll sit here happily with my 30F outside/50F inside, thank

I inspected roughly half of the roofing from inside the attic, and it
appears that they did tear off all of the old plywood, and put in new
OSB on the whole roof. Also, evidently they took off the DirecTV dish,
and then screwed it back on, down into the new shingles.
