<Grin> They're not "my" classifications.

I've been burning disks for years, now and this stuff was all news to me.
Lord, I wish I'd run across some of this information a couple of years, ago.
It's a long story but it would have saved a BUNCH of head scratching and
wondering what the hell was going on.

Right-click your post that you wish to cancel, then choose "Cancel
Message" (this is in Thunderbird). Although I've done it quite a few
times before, I've always been uncertain as to whether or not it
actually succeeded in canceling the post. I *do* know, however, that
*if* it does work, the longer the time between posting and cancellation,
the more people will receive it, anyway, despite the cancellation.

Perhaps someone will come along with some definitive information on our
ability, or lack thereof, of canceling posts to this newsgroup. Probably
I've just been fooling myself that it's even within the realm of
possibilities. (But I *do* enjoy thinking outside the box.)

It's called canceling an article; due to abuse of the function by
various jerks, a lot of sites no longer forward cancel messages.

Which is why some people saw it and were able to respond.

Usually it doesnt unless you do it very quickly after posting and
the news server is a bit slow to move stuff out to the wider usenet.

And once its got out to the wider usenet, past the news server you use,
very few servers honor cancels because they are so often done maliciously.

Uh, nooo. It is folks like you who muck up the Usenet. Crossposters suck
only slightly less than spammers.

I suppose there may have been a spill of some sort. However, if the mattress
needs cleaning because it is just old enough to have accumulated a lot of
dirt, or if it's not that great to begin with, I recommend replacing it.

Thinking it didn't make that much difference, I had slept on various old,
worn-out mattresses my entire life until maybe a month ago, when I finally
splurged and bought a nice, high-quality comfortable mattress. This decision
turns out to have been a time-saver: now when I wake up in the morning, I
no longer feel compelled to spend an extra 10 minutes standing under the hot
water in the shower trying to get my sore/tense muscles to relax. In
retrospect, it seems like I could've figured this out sooner and could
have found mornings slightly less miserable for the last decade or so.

By the way, alt.energy.homepower? What kind of a mattress have you got
there, a solar-powered one?

TOPIC: Update on installing kitchen cabinets from China

==============================================================================

== 1 of 2 ==

From: pc

Greetings group..

We have installed our kitchen cabinets. But, we are awaiting a few
doors that are back ordered. They look amazing.

Our kitchen is roughly 12 X 12. And the raised panel maple cabinets and
granite counters came in well under 6K.

Yes, it was a lot of money. But, it would have been triple that, at
least, if we went with a contractor.

The cabinets and granite are all from China. But, I heard about this
company and saw their granite products in many houses.

We installed the cabinets ourselves. And, I would not recommend this
for the easily distressed. There were a lot of discrepancies.

A sixteenth of an inch off here, an eighth of in an off there. We had
to do a lot of shimming to get everything to look level [above and
beyond normal shimming for floor level]. The back panel grain went
vertical on some and horizontal on others. I didn't care. But, others
might.

The granite install was perfect [the granite was from China too!]. It
looks lovely. They even did full backsplashes. That came in at $23 a
square foot installed.

Would I recommend cheap China cabinets? Sure. If you install them
yourself. Or if you have a contractor who is used to installing them.
Otherwise, you're going to pay through the nose for the 'pissed off'
factor that there is a little smidgen of problem with each unit. And
that adds time and aggravation.

While looking for some oak stair treads at Home Depot today, I was
amused to see they were all imported from China.

Current Checks merged with Checks Unlimited; I was buying from Current

available.

Does it really matter? If he wants light, and uses CF bulbs, and gets heat from
his furnace, the net cost is less.

Free copy of "The Bible Promise Book" in King James Version with over ONE
THOUSAND promises from God's word.

Compared to death and taxes, God's promises certainly sound good. But these
eternal words of comfort, love, hope, and peace are better that good. They are
the best news in life. There are over 1000 promises from the Bible arranged in
alphabetical order according to subject, this remarkable little book can be
described in two words. Absolute necessity.

So, how does an organization effectively manage talent?

Recognise talent: Notice what do employees do in their free time and
find out their interests. Try to discover their strengths and
interests. Also, encourage them to discover their own latent talents.
For instance, if an employee in the operations department convincingly
explains why he thinks he's right even when he's wrong, consider
moving him to sales!

Attracting Talent: Good companies create a strong brand identity with
their customers and then deliver on that promise. Great employment
brands do the same, with quantifiable and qualitative results. As a
result, the right people choose to join the organisation.

Selecting Talent: Management should implement proven talent selection
systems and tools to create profiles of the right people based on the
competencies of high performers. It's not simply a matter of finding
the "best and the brightest," it's about creating the right fit - both
for today and tomorrow.

Retaining Talent: In the current climate of change, it's critical to
hold onto the key people. These are the people who will lead the
organisation to future success, and you can't afford to lose them.

The cost of replacing a valued employee is enormous. Organizations
need to promote diversity and design strategies to retain people,
reward high performance and provide opportunities for development.

Managing Succession: Effective organisations anticipate the leadership
and talent requirement to succeed in the future. Leaders understand
that it's critical to strengthen their talent pool through succession
planning, professional development, job rotation and workforce
planning. They need to identify potential talent and groom it.

Change Organisation Culture: Ask yourself, "Why would a talented
person choose to work here?" If the organisation wishes to
substantially strengthen its talent pool, it should be prepared to
change things as fundamental as the business strategy, the
organisation structure, the culture and even the calibre of leaders in
the organisation.

A mattress can be shampooed like a couch. Normally you just vacuum it
to suck out the dust. A mattress cover helps keep it clean.

An ongoing vacuuming is best. The problem with any liquid cleaning is
that you do not want to penetrate the surface. Once wet, the inside
will likely mildew / never dry.

http://www.sonic.com/products/Consumer/SimpleBackup/quicklook.aspx

I was at the website above a few days ago, and found a program I used
years ago to make system recovery CD's - Simple Backup. I had used version
3, and later 4.

The link above shows where they are selling version 5 as a software
download. I paid for it, then downloaded it.

After downloading, I was shocked to find out that the new version had
removed the ability to make a bootable recovery disk! Now it pretty much
just lets you burn a file of folders to a CD or DVD. Ok, so they did add
DVD burning, but they took away the main reason why I shelled out $30 for
this program. Now it isn't any more functional than the basic Nero software
that is given away with most DVD burners. Nowhere on the website does it
give a warning, or mention that they have removed important features that
were present in versions 3 and 4 of the software.

To top it all off, when I contacted their customer service, they claimed
that they hadn't sold the software in more than a year, that it was an "end
of life" product, and that they could not offer any support for it. They
then had the gall to be "helpful" by providing me a link that was supposed
to give me a manual for the software. Instead, it led to a manual for a
completely different product.

So, what do you think - is this company engaging in fraud? Why would they
claim not to have sold this in well over a year, when I sent them the order
info (showing proof that I had just bought it directly from their website),
and when I just sent them a link to the page on their site where they are
STILL selling the software??!!

I've run into some strange things before, but this one's a doozy.

I didn't see where it said what version.

They say you can restore your Windows OS. To me, that implies that the
backup is bootable. If you need a third drive, that's a big thing not
to tell you.

Last year I bought a new Iomega PCI SCSI card from a computer store. It
wouldn't work. Eventually I learned that it would not work in any
computer made since 1996. Iomega would not answer my inquiries. This
led me to believe they were complicit. Why discard junk when you can
sell it to an unscrupulous vendor?

My problem with most of the cheap check places is they charge
a small amount for the first order and then go up to about what
the bank charges. I found this place http://www.promisechecks.com/
which claims they don't do that. They are a "Christian" check
printing company and they like to talk about the checks with Bible
verses on them, but they also have plain checks with no religious
message. The price seems good for basic no-frills checks and they
have a preview sort of function when you order to see what the checks
will look like with your info printed on them.

I've ordered both personal and business checks from them, but have
not needed to reorder yet.

Yes. I realized where you had come up with your DVD classifications
right after sending my post, which I then attempted to cancel.

You're looking in the wrong place. With Roxio you have to
use the correct tool which allows you to do the menus.

With Roxio Creator 8, you use Create DVD or Quick DVD.

I wasnt talking about DVDFlick, you need to use Roxio if you want to fiddle with menus etc.

DVDFlick is intended for no menus.

Depends on the game. I have a legal horse racing account and never
have trouble getting paid.
I also have an offshore account for sports and, again, when I win they
pay. On the other hand the same book has an online casino for card games
which I never go near. I never play a card game where the house can know
what you are holding.
By the way, last year congress passed legislation banning
credit/debit cards for paying offshore books. At the request of the
banking industry they exempted personal checks so this firm now takes
electronic checks and, at times, still takes cards. I never use a credit
card but have a debit card I use just for this purpose. It usually has a
few dollars and I do a transfer when depositing.

I travel light enough that I usually have only carry on luggage. This
way I don't have to wait for any checked in luggage from the carousel.
I get through immigration quickly and way ahead of the crowd. My
travels are mainly across countries. I carry minimum clothing as
anything I need can be bought at the local stores including new (ie
clean) underwear and socks as needed and locally printed T-shirts as
souvenirs. My dirty laundry is washed when I bathe. Travelling
lightly allows me lots of flexibility to buy knickknacks without
becoming overloaded. Its very rare that I have to buy a cheap gym bag
to hold the extra stuff. A cloth gym bag has strong comfortable
carrying handles and can be quickly unzipped for a customs or security
check. Even then I can still easily carry both my original and the
gym bags without the need for a cart. Remember me saying I bring my
own pillow? Putiing that under the armpit of the arm that carries the
heavier bag provides pretty good comfort to that arm too. You can
even fold the pillow to make the arm stretch further out to
accommodate a bulky bag.

My travel garb enables me to clear customs and security checks easily.
T- shirt, windbreaker, short pants weather permitting, socks and
strapped sandals. All my keys, loose change and pocket stuff is in a
plastic bag in my left pocket. I pull this out , no need to dig
around the pocket, to place on the tray for the X-ray scanner. From
my right pocket is my wallet. This arrangement allows me to make a
habit of a quick pat on both my hip pockets whenever I sit down or
rise up. I know instantly if my wallet or keys are still there. If
I lose anything else I don't care. The only other metal is my belt
buckle and removing my belt to put on the scanner tray is a well
rehearsed practice. Strap sandals are great for taking off when
seated for that long flight.

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm says "understand that the
media brand means nothing".

"It is the media ID that is important". Since "this is not written on
packaging or anywhere else", you'll need programs to decipher the media ID.

For Windows, try DVD Identifier (free), DVDInfo (free), ImgBurn (free), DVD
Decrypter (free). For Macintosh OS X: DVD Media Inspector (free). For
Linux: dvd+rw-mediainfo (free).

Thanks for the info. I downloaded and installed the DVD Identifier and
tested the two different stacks of DVD disks I happened to have.
First stack was Verbatim made by Mitsubishi Chemical, and ranked "First
Class"
The second stack was Memorex made by CMC Magnetics, ranked "Fourth Class"

Thanks. I'm pretty sure that I checked through all of the
pages under the :"Edit File" and "Project Settings" buttons,
and see no option to setup a menu, let alone a 'proper'
one. :-)

I also see no mention of how to setup menus in the Guide.

Can you point me to the feature to which you refer?

Hmm. I use DVD Identifier, as well, and have never noticed it appraising
DVDs as to class ("First Class," "Fourth Class"). And I just
double-checked to see if I'd been missing something obvious. Where in
DVD Identifier did you see these classifications of your DVDs?

I'd say (b)(5) applies.
During the flight, the stewardess will announce something scripted
to the effect that it's now ok to turn on "those electronic devices".
I take that as official permission.

There's a separate announcement that using cell phones is not permitted
once the plane is airborne.

The last 3 round trips I made all had at least the middle seat empty
and one had all three. Fly from CA to NY in the morning or at the end of
the work day and the plane will be crowded. Fly late at night and you
have a better chance.
Only my last flight from NY it was a holiday afternoon. The from of
the coach section was full but most of the final few rows had empty
seats in the middle and the one set of seats in the last row was empty.
People grab those front seats so they can get off sooner and wait for
their luggage.

I have a newer gas furnace; the annual service charge is now $69.00. I
generally have the furnace professionally serviced once every three years,
and clean it myself in between professional visits.

I don't want the government deciding what I can and can't read. It's a
slippery slope, and one we shouldn't get started on. There is a difference
between an ISP blocking spam and the government stepping in, making laws,
and getting involved in what we can read or not read online. I'd rather deal
with the spam and have the law makers stay out of it.

The government should not be involved, but the local ISPs should block
domains with excessive spam, if for no reason than costing them band width.

A few such blocks would wake up the abusive domains. If you follow the
spam, most newsgroup spam arrive via google groups, primarily from
China, India & Pakistan.

Checks Unlimited used to be called Current Checks, the check-printing
division of the large greeting card printers. They're okay and
have been around for a very long time.

Sure. Who wants to be the moderator? And be chained to the group for the
rest of your life, deleting the SPAM from a dedicated mail box, editing
the approved messages to insert an approval code, and forwarding the
approved messages to the group?

Or just run away from the group, leaving yet another dead moderated
group. Once that happens it's not easy for someone else to take over a
moderated group when the existing moderator just abandons the process
and disappears. That process can take months.

If anyone wants to seriously consider doing it though visit the group:

alt.config

to begin the proposal process.

I wrote articles on computer software and programming and broadcast
engineering for decades. I just took what was offered. If I thought it
was too little I sent the next article elsewhere. It was a sideline to my
main work and just a way to get extra money so I could be flexable. Book
advances and deadlines however are negotiable. I've retired and am out of
the loop now so have quit writing.
