Good God, Mann. Relax, would you? Have a smoke. Here, light one up.
MMmmmmm. Feel that good old nicotine burn? Let's put that one out and
light another. Ahhh, freshness like springtime! All done? Just toss the
butt out of your car window, saves emptying the ashtray. Yeah, flick it.
You can shoot it over there. Here, light another... where did you put
that stupid Bic? Oh, man, that's great. That smell sticks to your
fingers, doesn't it? It makes you think of cool tough guys and beautiful
dames, doesn't it? Smoking girls are the easiest, anyway- they know
smoking makes tongues hotter. Uh-oh, you're almost out. Only a couple
left in the pack. Better pick up an extra carton or two. You never know
when something bad might happen, like a war or a depression or
something, and you want to make sure you have enough smokes to tide you
over. Mann, that would be awful wouldn't it? If something like that
happened and you didn't have hardly any left? You still might be able to
scrounge some smokable butts out of ashtrays... IF anyone still smoked.
Smokes are really the only friend you can count on in the end.

There were people walking around everywhere.
Now, there are a lot of people walking,
but many of them are like us, just for exercise.
Management keeps the place clean and the floors polished real nice,
but I do wonder sometimes how they can keep going and if there's
enough shopping traffic to stay open."
Is this what the article says?
Cheapskates ~ No?
Go ahead give the smokers the list of malls that
still provide astrays and have excerciser's walking & jogging.
Yes, the malls were ahead of the legal ban,
and the cheapskates lead the way.
what's the matter, anti~smokers don't want the credit
for this economic impact?
Face reality.
So the list grows..

It's been pointed out rents were higher in malls than
stand-alone stores. Couple that with cheap Chinese
goods and shopping on the Internet.
Smoking bans had nothing to do with the demise of malls.
You give smokers too much credit. If they were a driving
economic force by insisting their addiction being catered
to, bans would be repealed in large numbers. How many times
do I have to say it? That isn't happening. Learn to live with it.

When?
Aspen, Colorado's ban is 23 years old. Old enough to drink.
Towns in California and Massachusetts passed them in the late
1980s & early 1990s. The rest of the nation followed. The
trend really took off in the 21st century.
Enactment is what's happening, not repeal.

An appeals court said that currency discriminates against the blind because
blind folks can't tell what the denomination of their bills are. This is
another bullshit, frivilous case. Next, the courts will be saying that
Harley-Davidson discriminates against the blind because blind people can't
operate motorcycles.
There are some stupid judges and attorneys. Obviously, common sense isn't
a requirement to go into law.
A simple way for blind people to handle money is for them to ask the bank
clerk for all $5's when they take money out of the bank. They could even
ask for the bank manager to count the money to make sure they weren't
duped. So if they go to Borders to buy a CD and the total comes to $13.
They can peel off 3 $5's out of their pouch of $5's and hand them to the
clerk. And then when they get $2 back, they can rest assured that the 2
bills are both $1's because the clerk certainly wouldn't give them back 2
$10's.
They can have a specially shaped pouch for $20's, one for $5's, etc.. So
they know what's in each pouch.

Should be interesting to see how this pans out. On a semi-related
note, a long time cashier at the main courthouse in Sacramento is
blind. AFAIK he hasn't been cheated by patrons, even though $1 feels
the same as $5?

I seem to recall that at least some European countries have had paper money
in different sizes for different denominations, and I have a hazy memory
that at one time that was the practice in the US as well.
Without commenting on the merits or otherwise of the ruling, under your
scenario an unscrupulous bank teller could count out bills of any
denomination regardless of what the recipient asked for, and there'd be no
way for a blind person to tell.

On a somewhat related note, crude oil prices hit $129.60 in today's
trading and the national average for regular unleaded now stands at
$3.80, with media reports telling us it could reach the $4.00 mark by
Memorial Day (only 20-cents to go!).
Locally, we're paying $1.339 per litre which works out to be $5.07 per
gallon, but in other parts of Canada it's even higher (e.g.,
$1.411/litre in Yellowknife).
Cheers,
Paul

It's weird that so many people hate minivans. Most minivans look better
than most SUV's. Plus a minivan is cheaper, gets better gas mileage, and
holds a lot more people/cargo than an SUV.

Can't make the 70 mile commute on a bicycle so I presume you mean a
motorcycle... And I already have one. my car gets better mileage and costs
less to maintain, etc.

Agreed and agreed... As I was driving home in my 1997 Sentra, missing a hub
cap and with the engine warning light on due to some unknown problem... I
wondered how many miles past 170,000 it would get before it died and I
needed to get myself a new beater commuter vehicle. Then I noticed the car
in front of me and the one directly to my left were both Masarati four
seater coupes. Something like a SportGT? I couldn't read the emblem
between the door posts...
Luckily, we need the SUV only for capacity and not for distance. My wife
drives about 20 miles a week total so it's going to get lots of use with the
multiple kiddies and my trips to Home Depot, but it won't cost me a million
$$$ in gas as if I were using it for my 70 mile round trip commute.

Why not get the original radio that came with your truck? It's likely
that you can find one on Ebay or at a wrecking yard, and you know it's
going to fit. Another plus is that thieves generally ignore stock AM/FM
radios. The tape deck (if it has one) may or may not work, but that's
apparently not an issue.
