I just joined the thread. I'm not sure how bad it is, but those businesses
can keep on going as long as there are young men willing to be messengers.

The guy in the story is not a messenger. He's professional therapist
or something.
You can still talk about messengers though. ;)

I'm scanning through the article and find the first three issues:
1- Reckless driving,
2- Hit & Run,
3- Indifferent police/judicial system...
SOMEWHERE SOUTH of Pelham, Simonetti tells me of a crash last summer,
in the Bronx, that left him with a broken collarbone. It was a "right
hook," one of the most common crash types for cyclists: a driver,
traveling in Simonetti's lane ahead of him, suddenly turned right—
without signaling—directly into Simonetti's path. An ambulance
responded quickly, but the police did not. The paramedics told
Simonetti the police would deal with the driver when they arrived, he
says. "But the guy left. I don't blame him." When the police,
investigating what was now a hit-and-run, came to the hospital, they
asked him if he'd gotten the license-plate number. "I was laid out on
the ground," he laughs. The driver was never found.

Actually that sounds quaint and how folks used to use cellphones when
they cost $1/minute and had 1 hour battery life.
We don't have a landline. Everyone in my family and most of my friends
are on the same carrier so we have "free" calling.
I think cellphones have incredible utility value. Just yesterday morning
I had a two hour drive to meet someone and about ten minutes into the
ride the guy called and said he had a family emergency and needed to
reschedule. If my phone was turned off I would have wasted 4 hours of
driving. And with a smartphone I can often resolve stuff in minutes.
Also I can search stuff, look up prices, get notifications on deliveries
and handy stuff like being able to check the weather radar when we are
out cycling to decide how long we have until the storm instead of the
old days of "rain is forecast , lets ride another day"

This is classical class struggle between drivers and cyclists: the Fat
Ass vs. the Fit Ass, and the Fat Ass wins every time by sheer size.
When will the Fit Ass rise up and do something?
Don't ask me what can it be, but TAKING THE LANE in a coordinated
manner may take us somewhere short of communism.
This is a shouting match that we may find around: "Hey you, asshole,
get on the sidewalk!" and then the cyclist replies: "Get off your
cage, you fat ass!"

Right, because every person who drives a car/truck is a fatass...[/sarcasm]
What a completely asinine statement.

Possible correction:
Troll's girlfriend is a fat ass too. Maybe she rides a fat tire bike
and doesn't' drive.
(He'd drive too if he could put gas in the mom's old donated Lexus.)

She was a fat ass. Not anymore. The right balance of bicycling helps a
lot. So does the diet she sells.
But she doesn't terrorize cyclists when she drives. That's the main
beef of mine against fat asses.

TOPIC: Is a bum the same as a beach bum?

From: "His Highness the TibetanMonkey, the Beach Cruiser Philosopher"
Very hard question for a Christian:
According to my philosophy, you must have a Beach Cruiser --flip-flops
and little else-- to enjoy the beach, and thus be a able to say
"Life's a Beach." I have a problem though:
MY PARK HAS MORE BUMS THAN BEACH BUMS...
which lowers the prestige for all, if you know what I mean. Well, it
also keeps the ladies away and that's very bad for a beach bum.
Actually it works as a DE FACTO Taliban restriction on women who are
afraid to come out.
If you are a Christian though you like to feed the bums at the nearby
church, and then say "Life's a Bitch." And I say, "Of course, it's a
bitch. You feed the problem!"
When you get up in the morning --says my wisdom-- you make it a beach
or a bitch, but you must avoid bums to keep the depression away. I
won't say, "AVOID CHRISTIANS," because that's just impossible.
I leave you know with perhaps the greatest of Beach Bum singers:
