I grew up in a house with a porch like that. My dad made wooden frames with
plastic that he installed every winter. It made the porch usable on mild
winter days. The porch was accessed through a single exterior type door that
was heavily weatherstripped and sealed pretty well considering the age of
the house. We live in Northeast Ohio so mild days weren't uncommon.

Thanks. I'll try it this winter. The walls are insulated (last year
with cellulous blown in) but there's a fair amount of windows and of
course, the door. Melissas point about removeable frames is interesting.

Anybody know if you can set up an Ebay auction and only ship to Europe?
I've never seen this as an option, but was wondering if a person could do
that.

Thanks!

I'm assuming you are setting up the auction in the US. I don't believe
so. You can set up an auction for US only as well as US plus Europe
(plus several other optional countries), but there does not appear to be
an option to ship to Europe from the US without including the US.

Why would you want to exclude the US? S/H would surely be much cheaper
/ easier within the US with significantly more potential buyers.

Sure; no problem. Make sure it's clamped/weighted properly for whatever glue
you use. Stagger the 20" sheets you have, then trim to final size. Build the
inclines underneath from the same stuff; glue and screw together.

If the ramp will be in wet weather, a couple coats of clear boatbuilder's epoxy
(WEST System or similar) will help preserve it from delamination and rot. The
same epoxy can be used to glue the sheets together. You can go whole-hog and
put a layer of fiberglass cloth on the bottom side (or both) to make it stiffer
(could probably go with 1/2" with glass on both sides).

I built a wooden wheelchair ramp for the MIL a few years ago.
Here are my suggestions:

Keep in mind that a single flat piece of wood by itself, does not make
a useable ramp. To rise up, even one step, at a reasonable angle,
the ramp should be at least 6 feet long. That kind of length means that
there has to be some vertical members to give a flat ramp some
structural strength.

Run two vertical pieces on the outside edges to give it strength
along the length of the ramp and to make walls to guide and prevent
the wheelchair from falling off. I made my ramp using 1x6" wood.

Run a couple of vertical pieces across the width of the ramp to give
it strength across the ramp.

Trim the vertical pieces at a angle so the ramp nestles flat at the top
of the step and on the ground.

Whirlpool was once regarded as top of the line consumer grade
appliances. Not so much anymore. By the way, Sears Kenmore is (or
was) Whirlpool.

Let your fingers do the walking in Google to find home appliance
ratings. There are lots of sites out there to help you decide. Two
that are absolutely independent are JD Powers and Consumer Reports.
Both rate Whirlpool in the bottom half of most of their various rating
categories. You need to look at their criteria and decide what's
important to you.

As to an extended warranty - they're rarely worth the money. When I
built my home 9 years ago I equipped the kitchen with Whirlpool
appliances in the Gold Line. Their top of the line at the time. The
range, microwave and dishwasher have performed flawlessly, and are
still like new. The side by side fridge on the other hand, has been
repaired twice. The first at about 4 years (an electronic relay), and
the second last year (the water dispenser pump). The cost of both of
those repairs was less than 15% of what an extended warranty would
have cost over the life of the unit. It won't be repaired a third
time. When/if it needs repaired again it'll be replaced. Probably
with an Amana with a bottom drawer freezer.

Good luck,
Sarge

I have a 2.4gHz cordless phone with good range and no static, but the
clarity is poor.

I've found a low price for a 5.8gHz phone that Consumer Reports rated a
best buy. Among 26 Amazon reviews, 10 complain of static. Of the other
16, many say the clarity and range are excellent.

A dissatisfied customer is probably more likely to write a review, so
the number of customers who dislike this phone is probably less than 38%.

I can imagine three reasons some customers would have static:
1. Poor quality control.
2. The frequency doesn't work well in some homes.
3. Some homes have a problem in the telephone wiring (particularly
connectors) or the position of the base station.

Should I go ahead and buy it?

It wont be that, it isnt a frequency used by much else.

That wont produce 'static'

Makes sense to buy it from an operation that allows it to be returned if it doesnt work well for you.

If it's an analog phone, that would explain the static.
Not all 5.8GHz phones are digital or spread-spectrum.

If it's an analog phone, I wouldn't buy it.

Thanks. I forgot that cordless phones could be analog. This one is.
The manufacturer, Uniden, says digital allows signals to sound clearer
and is more secure. Digital sounds like a selling point, but when I
went to the Uniden online store I found that their specs don't seem to
say if a phone is digital unless it's FHSS.

Buses

The Chinatown express
Oct 25th 2007 | NEW YORK TO WASHINGTON, DC
From The Economist print edition
http://www.economist.com/world/na/displaystory.cfm?story_id=10024825

Innovation brings emulation

IT USED to be that you had to venture below the grime-caked pylons of
the Manhattan Bridge, to a scene more reminiscent of Luoyang than of
the Lower East Side, in order to catch a cheap bus ride between New
York and Washington, DC. Even now at the intersection of East Broadway
and Forsyth St, ticket hawkers scream out destinations in thick
Cantonese accents--"DC, DC, DC!" "Philly, Philly!"--and grab the arms of
passers-by toting luggage. Loading queues often disintegrate into a
Hobbesian struggle to nab untaken seats.

Despite all this, the business is a model of thrift and ingenuity,
revolutionising travel in the north-east by selling tickets between
its big cities for as little as $12. In a testament to the power of
the invisible hand, the rough-and-tumble success of the Chinese bus
lines is attracting new competitors, and the industry is becoming less
dodgy in the process.

The Chinatown bus business developed in the 1990s to offer recent
immigrants an inexpensive van ride around town and, later on, between
cities. By the end of the decade, the Fung Wah bus company had begun
shuttling college students and other cash-strapped Americans between
New York's Chinatown and Boston's for $10 each way.

Competition soon became so intense that it prompted the 2004 "bus
wars" in New York's Chinatown, in which buses were rammed and torched
and a decapitated torso was left near a passenger loading zone. Spotty
safety records--in 2005 one Chinatown bus caught fire on the road--and
reports of drivers working excessive hours also raised concerns about
safety. But with prices so low, the buses still left packed.

Greyhound, America's biggest passenger bus line, dropped its prices,
offering a name-brand alternative to the Chinatown coaches. Dozens of
new competitors also emerged. Hasidic Jews from Brooklyn founded the
Washington Deluxe and Vamoose Bus. Most recently, a Marriott executive
founded DC2NY, a service between Washington and New York that
guarantees customers seats if booked online and charges only slightly
more than the Chinatown buses (a $40 round-trip versus $35). It also
offers free bottles of water and Wi-Fi internet access. The "luxury"
bus carrier has more than doubled its operation since its inaugural
trip this summer. Watch as its older rivals start copying its perks.

Rock music will never be the same since the coming of 66 Bloor.
They
have been likened to a cross between the Headstones and Ugly Kid
Joe,
but with more past issues. These 5 guys have their own rating on
the
Ricther Scale. Gilles Mallette does the vocals.....Kickin' ass is
his motto.
From down and dirty to wailin' it.......this guy's got it all. Mike
Lalonde
on lead guitar reminds one of a chainsaw wielding madman who leaves
his guitar
in a smoldering disheveled mass at the end of the night. Craig
Jefferson,
rhythm guitar is just that, of course the rest of the time he is
that
ever elusive crimefighter "Stratman". Mike Casey.........(the new
guy) is
on Bass Dave is one of the best drummers in the North. Dave
is awesome!!Dave RULES!! All 5 of these guys have been kicking
around
Northern Ontario for a while until they formed from the need to
"Return the Rock" to Northern Ontario and to put it in it's rightful
place so it
could be enjoyed by all who craved it!!. 66Bloor is straight up
ROCK. But don't
be fooled, these 5 guys are serious musicians. Between them they
have
many years of experience. They also believe in doing things at the
last minute so
as to be on the top of the pile. So keep your eyes and ears open,
you'll
be hearing more of these guys. The bands covers are awesome too.

Mike Lalonde began his guitar days programming on the Commodore 64.
He tinkered with music programs until joining up with Steve Nickle to
form their own band, WyldChyld. They toured Sudbury, Timmins, North
Bay and beyond.
Steve now works as a sound engineer. Michael Lalonde is a CGA
accountant and resides in Timmins Ontario.

I am toying with the idea of a seven deadly sins themed party for my
37th birthday. But here is my problem: My birthday is in January--too
soon after Christmas--no time for planning a party. Who else has this
problem?

Some have suggested having it another time, but I don't like that
idea--I have to have a reason for it. I cannot wait another year, as
planning ahead that far does not work for me. If I cannot act on an
idea immediately I will eventually lose interest. And seven deadly
sins on my 38th birthday just doesn't seem appropriate.

Does anyone like the idea of just having a party for no real reason? I
just don't like that idea. I can't seem to convince myself otherwise.
What does anyone else think?

A few years ago, I bought the Hippie Handbook and saw how to celebrate
your birthday in that way. But there was no time. I ddi not like my
mom's sugestion of just a party any time--the book said nothing about
that idea.

One year I ran into some people at a Salvation Army store who told the
man at the store they were going to an 80s party. this was one week
before Christmas. I asked if was for a birthday, but they said no.
This did not convince me that this was a good idea.

LOL Cindy, Ya sure...I don't mind changing them and he usually helps
me but it's really hard on the sheets. With two pair, Instead of
washing them around 25 times a year each, I am washing them around 90
times a year. It's so stupid. I can't tell the difference in
sleeping on them when they are washed that often or once a week. He
loves the feel of clean sheets on the bed. I think after a week you
can feel the difference but not every day or every other day. This
is the main reason I am thinking of flat sheets. I told him that he
will definitely have to help with tucking them in tho. Our mattress
weighs too much for me to lift it to tuck in all around.
I did a search in Google to find a good mattress securer. I had the
elastic ones with garters on them and they work ok but I found these
really neat ones on the net. Tugs. Check them out. You have to
order them tho because they aren't in any stores.

this is a van that picks you up at your door and goes to all the
airports.

www.bluevan.com???

i've never used it to newark because
the buses from the port authority terminal and amtrak to the airport
train are easy for me.

the china buses leave from around chatham square in chinatown. they
are really cheap, but they are unlicensed and do have frequent
mechanical problems. this would be the cheapest route.

Go to your Chinatown travel agency. Usually there is a nearby tour
bus service that operates as an inter-city commuter bus. I don't know
the price except that its very affordable and brings you right to
downtown in the other city. The leave when the bus is full.

That is the way some local bus lines in Mexico operate. You can wait
5 minutes or you can wait 20.

I need a temporary wheelchair ramp to allow an occasionally visiting niece
to get in my slightly raised cottage.I saw one at harbor Freight which
requires 3/4" thick plywood..will need 36" width.I have no truck to carry
such but do have lots of 1/2" board (it is placed on the walls of buildings
and is fragments of wood rather than solid sheets) 20 inches wide...can I
glue the 1/2" together to equal an inch thick?

Thanks

You could glue and clamp the 1/2" wood together. That's how plywood is
made anyway. I would prefer to drive a bunch of screws through both
pieces or do both glue and screws. For a small project, this would
work fine.

-----------------
You said 'temporary'. Not sure how temporary 'temporary' is. But I would
bet a Rental type place would have one.
Ramps can be used for more things than wheel chairs. Folks need them
to roll wheel barrows in and out of any kind of building.
I have been chuckling, because it has already been proven that
Mexicans are capable of going over 'any' wall by use of ramps, put on
both sides. They've already done it. Have wall ...will travel!

Price range?

Side by side or freezer over refrigerator or refrigerator over
freezer? Icemaker?

The icemaker is what usually fails.

There are just too many variables to make a single recommendation.
Look at the reviews on epinions.com

We've found that USEABLE space in side-by-sides is minimal.

If the walls between the porch and the house are insulated, it probably won't
make any difference.

The heat lamp fixture I used to have had a small fan inside it to circulate air
