The grocery coupons I find useful are the ones printed at the
supermarket check-out, but even then only the ones for free items, or
items I normally buy (for which I wait for a sale, and then use the
coupon as well). And also the supermarket's own coupons, which are
often for produce or other non-brand items. (Every year I get five
pounds of matzoh free with a coupon for spending $50 in groceries in one
trip--and with the price of a box of dry milk at $13.49, it's really
easy to spend $50! :-( )

If you have children (or adults) who insist on certain breakfast
cereals, or a certain brand of toothpaste for the flavor, coupons for
those can be useful.

I agree, though, that the coupons offered today in newspaper supplements
and on-line are pretty much aimed at really over-priced stuff to start with.

Same here. Coupons are a classic example of "dollars chasing dimes".
The cost of producing, delivering and processing those coupons gets
rolled right into the price of those products, so what's the point?

If I find a coupon for an item I buy anyway (same brand, size, etc.)
I'll use it - 99+% of them go right into the trash. If they want me
to try a different brand of something I already use, they have to give
me a free sample.

Yep. The only thing I use coupons for is my hair color. It's the only brand
I would ever use, and I always have a $2 off coupon. I can't wait until
enough of my hair goes silver that I can just leave it alone.

They're doing that at one of our grocery stores here as well. The
main problem is this: "most" people had direct deposit so these "get
10% more with your stimulus checks" is a moot point for them. I like
the theory, but the reality isn't great. Unless they'll take a print
out show you got the deposit and let you write a check for the
amount :)

Kroger did not ask for any evidence of a tax rebate at all. It's just a
marketing gimmick tied to the stimulus program. But one I'm happy to take
advantage of.

enough to put me in the ground so my son doesn't have to pay for it.

Can't help on the insurance question, but suggest when you do find a policy,
you compare the cost against what your local funeral home would charge for a
pre-paid funeral. You can probably pay for that in installments, just as you
would the premium on a life insurance policy.

Bingo! At your age prepaid is the way to go. Assuming you're healthy
and live to your full actuarial age or more, it will cost far less
than any life insurance policy you'll find.

Be careful of what you see on those TV commercials about insurance to
cover "final expenses". Most of the ones they talk about are
unsecured debts that don't pass down to your heirs, and won't be paid
unless your estate is large enough that you don't have to worry about
it anyway.

Maybe. But personally, having seen all the pro-big-banking, anti-consumerist
legislation that's occurred during my lifetime, I hope I die with every
single one of my credit cards charged up to the max. Just call it getting
even--or, if you prefer, a cost of doing business for the card issuers.

After all, it's not as if they're ever going to stop sending me
solicitations for new cards. Even when I'm 90 years old.

I guess if I kept my thermostadt at 85 I would like a cold shower in
the morning.

Thanks for the link, interesting read!

To be fair, the author is not arguing that college is a waste of money
across the board, only that we're overpaying, and goading too many
marginal students into college even though they're unlikely to recoup
the investment. So it all comes down to the individual.

Tuition rates have been rising so fast for the last couple decades, it
has to peak out somewhere. It's nice to at least see the issue analyzed.

For the record, it wouldn't trade my college education for anything.
I'm just not cut out for real work :)

Hi Cheapo Groovo,

I do appreciate your support but, really, how can I possibly stand up to
them?

They can always impugn my reputation in a single post and shout me down
were I to even try. That's easy and inexpensive on their part.

The actual hard part is taking the pictures, saving them, shrinking them,
cropping them, annotating each and every one, uploading them, making a
slide show out of them, calling the faucet company and asking intelligent
questions, doing the initial web searches, following up on all the
suggested links, buying the correct parts, buying the right tools, and then
doing the actual repair work and writing it all up for others to benefit.

Given I've done all that, I don't really have the time nor the energy to
"stand up to the bullies". In fact, I'd rather spend my appreciable time on
my next home repair project (which is to fix the wiring in the bathroom
that I screwed up installing automatic on/off lights supposedly to save
money). Sigh.
