Claim: Black and white caterpillars are venomous.
TRUE
Example: [Collected via e-mail, August 2011]
Little white and black caterpillars all over are POISONOUS. they are
apparently new to the area..... doctors say there has been numerous
kids having reactions to them. the rash spreads fast. the caterpillars
have long white hairs that embed in skin and send poison through out
the body. DO NOT TOUCH and DO NOT LET YOUR KIDS TOUCH!!! they look
cute and fuzzy and THEY ARE NOT! Please repost to everyone you know
with little kids!!

Thank you for the information. I do live in a remote location and tend to think
in terms of surviving a week minimum with out leaving the property. This is a
very small sub-division so we are last or near last on the list to have electric
or telephone lines repaired.
While I am not fond of the blow hards ever announcing the end of the world, I
truly believe that we are in for a few hard years.

Rain water after boiling if the creek is dry. We are blessed with a small
spring fed creek that runs most of the year, except now. Right now we have
water stored and catch rain water to help water livestock/ gardens.

Wont be that hard with 90% employed.

Just thought I'd ask.
Around here we are blessed with a long rainy season. One mild rain storm
and I have 120 gals of rain water. Plus, there is about 40 to 50 gals
of potable water in the water heater. I'm actually giving some thought
to using the rain water to flush the toilets by hooking up a Flojet
pump and a 12 volt battery.

Well, where I live once was remote but, at an ever-increasing rate, the
past twenty years have seen an influx of townies whose idea of "country life"
comes from teevee reruns, movies, etc. and to whom it seems quite reasonable to
commute 100+ miles to keep a job. Beats me.... As you imply, one benefit -- such
as it is -- of increasing population density is shortened restoration times for
power and telephone outages. The last hurricane that came near enough to be a
threat resulted in a week's power outage for my neighbors and, strangely, only a
day's for DW&me. I have adequate shelter against hurricanes; tornado, too, given
adequate warning. Ironically, by the time one is certain of hurricane's impact,
conditions are such that only the most foolish would consider trying to escape.
If long-term survivability were an issue then the matter of a reliable water
supply would be the first that I addressed.
My food and seed reserves, such as they are, are more the result of a
lifestyle choice than of paranoia, although, I find the growing unrest among the
Johnsonian entitlement class to be a bit unnerving.

How hard can they be with a nearly 90% employment rate? I have little
sympathy for overextended imprudent wage slaves and corporate minions who bought
into the free money myth. I expect to be okay provided that the current crop of
incompetent Keynesian fools pretending to be running things don't devalue the
currency too drastically. Frankly, the current economic doldrums should work to
my personal advantage: I am of an age where I consider myself able to accomplish
one more move and resettlement before infirmity and ill health become serious
considerations and DW&I are planning to move to a more remote location within
the next year. As long as the statist pretenders-in-charge continue to keep the
economy depressed, I should be able to take advantage of the depressed real
estate values and "buy up" for cash.
