Sounds like you have a clogged vent stack somewhere in the house. When
something else in the house drains (eg, a washing machine), it acts as
a venturi pump. Normally it would pull air down the vent stack into the
drain system but if that is blocked instead it pulls the standing water
out of your toilet.

You stuffed up the replacement of the parts.

> and the solution?

Get someone else to do a better job, or work out what you stuffed up.

Looks like you managed to stuff up two different areas, the main stopper
clearly allows the water to leak away, and for some reason the valve that
is supposed to refill it when that happened isnt working properly either.

I had this happen but the vent stack wasn't clogged, rather the vent
stack was being used as a roof drain. During heavy rains so much water
went down the vent stack through the poop pipe that it would suck the
water out of all toilets in the building. I fixed this by raising the
vent stack so that rain water would drain through it any more.

Well, Sam, perhaps you have another problem, because I am
using Verizon and I am reading this in
alt.building.construction. It may be something on your end.

Don't know about the other one.

I've got enough wood stacked for the season, but I really don't want
to burn it all. It's a lot of work getting more.

I've been going solar and adding insulation the last few years so my
plan is to only use the wood when I have to. We'll see... This year I'm
going to close down about half the house and see how it cruises.

If you want efficient heat, move to an equatorial desert. You won't
have to pay a cent for heat, or consume any resources to get it.

BEIJING - China's Communist Party elite approved a list of candidates
for top positions Saturday, setting the stage for final negotiations
whose outcome will be a key indicator of President Hu Jintao's
political strength.

With the list of an unspecified number of candidates in hand, the more
than 2,200 delegates to a weeklong party congress on Sunday will
select the Central Committee, a body that appoints top leaders and
sets broad policy goals.

Recent months have brought fractious backroom bargaining among senior
party members, although Hu has issued a customary call for unity at
the congress, held once every five years.

The result of the tussle will determine how strong or divided the
leadership is as it tries to ease tensions over a wide rich-poor gap
at home and manage China's rising clout abroad so as not to anger the
U.S. and other world powers.

The congress is all but certain to give Hu a second five-year term as
party chief. But for him, the event offers a chance to pack leading
party bodies with allies, including a potential successor, thereby
giving himself a freer hand to shape policies.

At Sunday's Central Committee selection, a test for Hu will be whether
Vice President Zeng Qinghong is on the list. A skilled party operator,
Zeng rose to power as an aide to Hu's predecessor, helping him shove
aside rivals. Though Zeng has also helped Hu do the same, his presence
is seen as a constraint on Hu's power and at age 68, Zeng is around
the party's soft retirement age for most leaders.

Aside from selecting the Central Committee, the congress will appoint
the members of the party's internal corruption watchdog agency and
adopt a revision to the party's charter endorsing a reference to Hu's
pet policy initiative - "the scientific outlook on development."

The program, a hallmark of Hu's first five years, has called for
increased social spending to help farmers and urban workers whose
living standards have not risen as fast as many other Chinese under
capitalist economic reforms.

The new Central Committee will meet Monday to approve the lineup of
the powerful Politburo and its Standing Committee, which runs China.

Though congress and Central Committee delegates have some influence
over leadership decisions, most of the lineup is decided among a core
group of the most powerful party members and elders.

State-run media reported that a 237-member steering committee led by
Hu approved the final candidate list for the Central Committee after
two days of consultations with congress delegates. China Central
Television showed Hu and other leaders raising their hands in
approval.

"The candidates' ideological and political qualities were relatively
higher," CCTV reported. "Their work experiences were relatively more
practical."

It is, the problem is that what you want output wise isnt that commonly required.

I've never seen one. One problem is, you can't get HD through Svideo
or composite connectors. They only work with a 480i signal. So
you're not likely to find an HD tuner device with those outputs (one
exception is HD satellite TV boxes that down-convert HD and put it out
on Svideo, but it isn't realy HD anymore).

For HD, you commonly see devices with component (RGB), DVI or HDMI
outputs/inputs. Sometimes VGA.

With the Dell monitor, you can view SDTV (480i NTSC) via the composite
or Svideo connectors, or HDTV (720p or 1080i) via the DVI or VGA
connectors. As I've mentioned before, I use an ATSC HD tuner card in
a PC to watch HD on my Dell monitor, using the DVI connector from the
PC's video card. Works great.

It should go on the side of the house thats got the best view of the satellite.

That should see the 'problem' only visible on one side of the street, the other
side of the street should mostly have the dishes on the back side of the house
if the street runs EW or close.

What URL would I "tracert" for t-mobile hospot@home?

I tried "tmobile.com" and got the following:

You'll see a lot of time outs on tracert that are on working
connections. You may wish to just ping it.

TOPIC: make money using paypal as seen on the oprah and 20/20 with only $6

THE PAYPAL 6 DOLLAR MONEY-MAKING METHOD

AS SEEN ON OPRAH and 20/20 EARN HUGE $$$$$$$$

I gave it a try, hey its only $6, I figured at least 6 people would
respond out of the MILLIONS of people that use the internet.

You should give it a try too!

You have nothing to lose, and a whole lot to gain!

A little while back, I was browsing through some interesting adds,
just like you are now and came across an article similar to this that
said you could make thousands dollars within weeks with only an
initial investment of $6.00!

So I thought, "Yeah, right, it must be a scam",
but like most of us,I was curious, so I kept reading.

Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 though paypal to each of the
emails stated in the article.

You then place your own email address in the bottom of the list at ..
6, and post the article in at least 200 news groups. (There are a
lot)

So after thinking about it, I went ahead trying it.

I figured what have I got to lose except $6.00 small dollars, right?

Like most of us I was a little skeptical and a little worried about
the legal aspects of it.

It follows the same regulations as the "mailed chainletters, which
according to the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161) is indeed legal!

Then I invested the measly $6.00.

Within days, I started getting money in my paypal account!

Even if you get 5 people and they get 5 people.

1. 1*5=5
2. 5*5=25
3. 5*25=125
4. 5*125=625
5. 5*625=3,125
6. 5*3125=$15,625 is yours .
I figured it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in.

This is now my fourth week and I have made a total of just over
$24,641.00 and it's still coming in rapidly.

It's Certainly worth $6.00.

Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it works?

REQUIREMENTS:

You must have a verified paypal account.

If you do not have an account you can go to www.paypal.com......
and get a free account.

I would suggest signing up for a business account because it does not
limit you to the amount of money you can receive.

Example: with a Personal account you are limited to receiving $500.00
a month and withdrawing $500.00 a month.

And trust me you WILL be receiving more than $500.00 a month!

Like i mentoined before In order to place the initial $6 into your
account, you will have to verify your bank account with paypal (which
may take a few days).

STEP 1:

Send, through paypal, $1.00 to each email on the below list. Make the
subject of the payment "Email List" and in the comments, write "PLEASE
PUT ME ON YOUR EMAIL LIST." What you are doing is creating a service
by this and best of all you are not giving your address to anyone ...
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY LEGAL!

The email list:

#1) bearcat@keyway.net
#2) christinaaj@gmail.com
#3) value4u2@hotmail.com
#4) hsweaney1224@hotmail.com
#5) kgunter@cwjamaica.com
#6] shawn_stillwell@yahoo.com

STEP 2:

Now take the ..1 email off the list that you see above, move the other
addresses up(6 becomes 5, 5 becomes 4, etc) and add YOUR email
address (the one used on the paypal account) as number 6 on the list.

STEP 3:

Change anything you need to, but try to keep this article as close to
original as possible. Now, post your amended article to at least 200
newsgroups, message board. (I think there are close to 32,000 groups)
All you need is 200, but remember, the more you post, the more money
you make - as well as everyone else on the list!

For example: you log on to any search engine like yahoo.com,
google.com, altavista.com, excite.com then you search with subject
like ?millionaire message board? or ?money making message board? or ?
employment message board? or ?money making discussions? or ?money
making forum? or ?business message board? Etc...

My county Public Health Service provides free flu shots for residents,
and free pneumococcal shots for residents over 65. You might want to
check with your local public health service to see if they provide this.

If you had access to a scanner with a paperfeeder, the way to go
would be to first xerox the book and then run the copies thru the scanner.

Why is that easier than just scanning each page? Don't you have to
press each page against a glass plate in either case?

Personally, I think the easiest way would be to get an exacto knife
and carefully cut along the binding so that you "liberate" all the
pages, then put those into a sheet feeder. But that's slightly
destructive.

Copy machines are a lot faster than the typical scanner.
At least the kind used in most offices and copy centers are.

I understand what you are saying but I think this thread isn't
"anti-dish" but more "stupid installations of dishes" such as where the
OP had observed the all too common scenario where there is a house with
nice architecture and the dish is just slapped onto the easiest
available surface in front of the house.

After the last thread (on LCD power consumption) and some looking
around I wound up with a used Dell 2001FP (~$170). This has multiple
inputs (including S Video) and Picture in Picture. Nice.

Now I could get one of the PCI digital cards mentioned before, but
I'd like to try a seperate tuner. A converter box, so to speak. After
much web searching I've found nothing for less than the cost of my monitor.

Any suggestion on devices with digital tuners and either S Video or
composite out? With a year to the digital TV only cutoff date I would
have thought the world would be full of these devices.

There's a lot that isn't great about wood stoves. If you live in an area
where wood is cheap/free and you don't mind stoking the box at 5 AM on a
cold day, then wood stoves are fine.

This winter, my plan is to use my wood stove a lot less.

Hello,

I have an older toilet. A few years ago, I
changed all the parts inside the tank. It
has worked fine since then. Until now.

Lately, it has an odd pattern. I flush the
toilet. The tank and bowl refill fine.
I've watched them.

Then I come back next time. And the bowl is
almost empty!

And, it only seems to happen intermittently.

It's really bizarre.

Does anyone have any idea what might be
causing this, and the solution?

Thanks a lot!

I don't know what you mean by "older toilet" but if
it's anything like the conventional home toilet, you
obviously have a leaking rubber stopper. The refill
valve/float assembly is also very likely in need of
replacement since it does not respond to the drop
in water level as the water seeps out.

You can get all this stuff for under $10 probably
and install it yourself.

One reason could be high winds effecting the vent pipe
which causes waves to lower the level.

Or could be a blocked outlet that given time will lower its level
but in doing so will influence the bowl by a siphoning action.

Make sure there are no obstructions in your vent stack, dead squirrel,
blob of leaves etc.
Other than physical damage to the bowl the only thing removing water
besides a flush would be a vent problem or dogs drinking.
If the vent is clogged then a suction can be applied to the bowl by
other parts of the plumbing/sewer system.
Sometimes in very high winds you can see the water in the bowl move as
the wind passing over the stack changes pressure inside.

Or a blocked vent that causes a siphoning action.

He said BOWL, fella, NOT tank.....(Do you know the difference?)

Because you say it's intermittant, I'm skeptical about others'
suggestions that it's a wet strip of "something" syphoning the bowl, or
a crack bypassing the trap.

I'd think more likely it's a clogged vent stack and draining something
elsewhere in the house is "sucking" the water out of that toilet bowl.

Jeff

My half second delay is now gone - I read on BroadBand Reports site
that T-mobile has to change the software on the nearest cell tower to
make it work right - I guess they finally got around to it.

Different question: Will t-mobile let me buy an unlocked Samsung wi-
fi phone (t409) on Ebay and just swap the SIM chip for my wife and
daughter's t-mobile phones so they can do wifi too? I don't want to
extend our contracts 2 years if I can avoid it.

OK. I'm giving this a test run. I didn't have any jugs of water, so I
put in two cases of beer. Liquid is liquid.

The preliminary results so far have been satisfying.

Buzz back in China's scandal-hit toy industry

Trade fair shows country is still world leader despite recalls and
safety fears

The appearance of a 2-metre, cross-eyed sea organism and a portly pink
starfish would not normally be reassuring to the manufacturing moguls
of China Inc.
But, after the biggest product safety scandal in 20 years, even the
presence of SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star at this week's
Shanghai Toy Expo represents a vote of confidence in an industry that
has launched a fierce fightback for its reputation.

The cartoon characters joined Mickey Mouse, the Teletubbies and Thomas
the Tank Engine in a Toyland turnout at the international trade fair
that left little doubt that China remains unchallenged as the workshop
of the world.

At the first mainland exhibition since Mattel recalled 21m potentially
hazardous items, buyers and exhibitors said more children than ever
are likely to get Christmas presents produced in Guangdong province in
December.
China makes 60% of the world's toys, and is an increasingly important
market. At the mainland's biggest toy show, its dominance was evident
in a record 400-plus exhibitors and more than 3,000 registered buyers.

It is a long way from the worst fears in August, when the world's
biggest toy firm, Mattel, pulled items including Batman, Barbie, Polly
Pocket and Doggie Daycare products from the shelves because some toys
contained lead paint or magnets that could be swallowed by children.
The recall led to a suicide, a bankruptcy and the tarnishing of the
Made in China label.

But China's manufacturing juggernaut has powered on. Toy exports rose
18% in the first nine months of this year, Mattel has been forced to
apologise for its design faults and multinational toy firms are still
lining up to enter the domestic retail market.

If there is an impact it will not be felt until next year, when toy
prices could rise because of tighter safety checks. "We are very, very
worried about the export market," said Stella Ng of the TianQuan toy
factory in Guangzhou, which supplies Dream Baby dolls to Toys R Us.
"Our English customers are asking for far more test reports than last
year. If there is no test report, then there is no shipment."

Among the displays was one for British company Hornby, which makes its
Scalextric cars in China. Many others were there for the first time,
including London-based HiT entertainment, which wants to introduce
Thomas the Tank Engine to the local market despite a recall of many of
these Chinese-made products from US shelves this summer.

English buyers said product safety fears were exaggerated and the
blame misplaced. "I think Mattel caused its own problems by not
policing its products properly," said Sean Charlesworth of Whitehouse
Leisure, an Essex-based company that supplies plush toys to several
big British retailers. "It is all about price. You squeeze a factory
too hard and it leads to problems."

Mr Charlesworth said tighter checks introduced since the scandal mean
shipments are being delayed, more goods are being rejected and costs
are likely to rise. But in his sector of cuddly toys, he said, there
were bigger threats to China's competitiveness. In the past year, the
yuan appreciated 7% against the dollar, migrant labour wages rose 17%
and tighter environmental controls helped to increase the price of
Chinese-made teddy bears by 10-25%. For the first time, he is planning
to look at Vietnam and India as an alternative for the millions of
cuddly toys he buys each year.

Charles Riotto, president of the International Licensing Industry
Merchandisers' Association, said the scandal was the biggest since he
entered the industry 20 years ago, but the worst is over.

"When we look back at 2007, it will be viewed as a year when
manufacturers and licensers really took a look at how safe their
products are and how they are perceived by customers. They realise
that it is not enough just to have a good product at a good price. It
must also be safe and consumers must feel satisfied."

But, like almost everyone at the fair, he did not expect a change in
the pecking order of the toy industry. "China has a big advantage. It
has the workforce and the manufacturing capacity in place. The
business is theirs to keep."

Christmas looks set to be made in China for several years to come.

Hey, what happened to these newsgroups?

If still around, how can a feller access them? Verizon yanked them off their servers a few weeks ago. A shame - great NGs.
