I have two higher end, and one basic. The basic is the perfect
sidewalk bike: Cruiser style, you can break with one hand, having foot
brakes. Many people ride aggressive bikes on sidewalks and that
aggravates the problem. Most of the time they don't even have BOTH
hands in position for braking.

This bike though would be too slow for the road. Maybe no more than 8
miles for hour.

If I were the Comandante somewhere I'd promote it as Hitler did with
the VW. And I would ban SUVs altogether (except those real ones always
needed). ;)

Study Links Soft Bedding Products and Infant Deaths
Washington, D.C. Research that links putting infants to sleep on soft
bedding with increased risk of infant death due to suffocation will be
presented today by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) at
the annual Society for Pediatric Research meeting in Washington, D.C.
The research was conducted by CPSC in collaboration with the
Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the
University of Maryland. It is the first epidemiologic evidence that
directly links the rebreathing of carbon dioxide trapped in bedding to
infants found dead in the prone sleep position.

The research project, completed in 1994, found that about 30 percent
of the 206 infants in the study who died of Sudden Infant Death
Syndrome (SIDS) were found with their noses and mouths covered by soft
bedding. Most of those infants had been placed on their stomachs to
sleep and were found lying on top of soft bedding such as pillows,
comforters and sheepskins. Eighty percent of the SIDS deaths in the
study occurred in babies under four months of age.

"We have not found a cause for SIDS," says N.J. Scheers, Ph.D., CPSC's
project director and epidemiologist, "but our results show that
specific items of bedding used in the U.S., such as comforters and
pillows, were associated with an increased risk for death to
prone-sleeping infants whose faces became covered, compared to infants
on their sides or backs without soft bedding underneath them."

The study followed preliminary evidence suggesting that soft bedding
may play a role in the occurrence of SIDS, which kills some 6,000
babies each year in the United States. The purpose of the study was to
answer two broad questions: (1) are there bedding items that increase
the risk for infants being found dead with their airways covered, and
(2) are there economic and sociological SIDS risk factors that explain
the risk for infants found dead with their airways covered?

The study used a multicenter, case-comparison design with death scene
investigations of SIDS infants, and included using a mannequin to
re-create the position of the infant when found unresponsive.

The study concludes that economic and sociological factors had little
effect on the risk for death with airways covered. Bedding items with
enough softness and malleability to allow pocket formation beneath an
infant's head, particularly pillows and comforters, increased the risk
of death with airways covered. "These items should not be placed near
infants sleeping prone," says James Kemp, M.D., Assistant Professor of
Pediatrics at Washington University School of Medicine, "and probably
should be avoided regardless of sleep position." CPSC and the
collaborating researchers recommend the following safety guidelines
for infants less than eight months old:

* Place infants to sleep in a crib on a firm, flat mattress.
* Do not place soft, fluffy products, such as pillows, comforters,
or sheepskins under infants while they sleep or nap.
* Place healthy infants on their backs or sides to sleep, as
recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The smoke and fire problem, unfortunately, isn't confined to
Spacemaker microwaves. We've heard similar complaints about other GE
microwaves.

Jessica of Lawrenceville NJ (10/3/01):
I want to report that my General Electric Spacemaker Microwave,
ModelJVM140K 004, manufactured in 1993, caught on fire when it was not
in use. The stove was in use at the time. The microwave turned on by
itself, and could not be shut down until it was disconnected by a
fireman. The microwave is unusable, and now the kitchen interior is
ruined, as I am afraid to replace it with another Spacemaker
microwave.

Scott of Burlington VT (3/28/03):
The microwave blew up! Immediately after pushing the start button an
earth-shattering snap and blinding blue light flooded the kitchen. My
Wife and child were right next to the microwave when this occured and
were incredibly shaken. My daughter cried for 30 minutes following. My
wife is not willing to use another GE product.

Steven of Olathe KS (9/23/03):
A GE Spacemaker Microwave Oven was installed in my Farimont 2000 model
modular house. It failed after 3 years of service on on Sept. 22, 2003
while popping pop corn. It smoked up the house and would have started
a fire if I had not intervened.

Brian of Riverside CA (5/18/03):
GE Spacemaker II. While microwaving some BBQ ribs I previously had in
the freezer, the microwave "smoked" and set off the fire alarm. It had
been heating the food exceptionally slowly. I simply assumed that it
was because the ribs were previously smoked and had a low moisture
content and, thus, weren't heating quickly.

At first there was a plastic smell. My roomate commented, "What are
you cooking? Rubber ribs?" I simply ignored him and continued with my
school work. About five minutes later, the fire alarm went off and I
noticed the microwave was full of smoke. Police and fire departments
responded accordingly. I was informed by university housing that I
would not be fined because the microwave was at fault. However, I am
concerned for a microwave defect because the housing complex I am
currently in has over 120 of these units (8 per building, 15 buildings
total)

Julia of Auburn NY (3/13/03):
Similar to some people who complained, we have a GE microwave which
for no apparent reason "blew up". Our 2000 GE spacemaker (JVM) started
to make a loud popping/grinding noise. We were using it correctly. It
then caught fire and smoked. Again, we had to unplug the microwave
because none of the buttons would turn it off. VERY dangerous.

It has to be replaced or pay $250 to fix it (!) and now I'm not sure
we can fit another micro into the spot we have over our oven/stove. I
do not want another fire hazard in my home, so not sure what to do.

Denise of Upland CA (5/14/02):
I am writing about a microwave that I purchased on 11-02. I started
having a problem with it a few months ago. My daughter put a bag of
popcorn in it and it caught the bag on fire! My house was full of
smoke. She did not use the popcorn cycle. But she put it for 4 mins.
like it said on the bag. I had someone come out to check it out. They
informed that the microwave was fine. So I continued to use it.

One night I put a frozen hot chili in to thaw. I set it for 20
seconds. It went for 10 seconds. It made a loud popping noise and then
a flash of either fire or light went through the microwave. I shut it
down right away. And unplugged it. The chili was still frozen. I
called them again. They said they would send out someone again. I went
to pick up my daughter on that day. he left a note that he came by at
3:20. I was home at 3:10. I called and asked if thay could send him
back? They said they would. and if he couldn't the supervisor would
call. I waited, no one called.

I have this microwave that is still under warranty. And they refuse to
take care of the problem. It will proably burn down my house. They say
it has a built in chip that would stop it from doing this. if that is
true why did it burn the popcorn?

Though not advertised as a feature, Matt recently learned that if you
turn off a Frigidaire microwave and leave the house, it might
spontaneously combust. A service tech blamed a short-circuiting switch
for the blaze, which thankfully didn't cause any serious property
damage.

properly, as it appears to be a faulty unit since it happened on its

Matt later sent us an update.

The manufacturer would not do much with it being out of warranty.
It sounds like had there been property damage they would have cared
but since the house itself didn't catch fire, they offered a rebate
toward a new one (I would have had to pay a significant amount).
Instead, my home warranty company, 2-10, handled it amazingly and I
now have a nice GE unit for only the $65 service fee.

The service tech who came out to confirm the microwave was beyond
repair showed me the switch that shorted inside behind the panel. He
provided anecdotal stories of others having this switch fail but only
the unit would light up, just failed to actually microwave things. No
fires in those cases.

Also, he said it shorted and overheated inside, but thinks it
smoldered as opposed to there being full flames. My outlet tripping
cut the power and saved the unit from catching fire.

In First World Banana Republics laws are randomly applied. For
example, beaches here are closed at midnight for the average citizen,
but not for the homeless who have taken up shelter under the stars.

In Costa Rica you can camp at the beaches anytime.

But the cyclists in the First World don't make that much money to
worry about. The War on Drugs though is BIG BUSINESS, so expect strict
enforcement.

So why are our clever authorities here in Miami Beach invest a fortune
in MIXED PATHS that endanger kids and old people.

What's the NATIONAL STRATEGY? None, of course. ;)

times at Costco so can order glasses online

Each time it has been one half to one complete mm off.

How important is PD and how accurate must it be?

I'm thinking I should take all three measurement and
average them and use that.... one for the right side
and another of the left side. Good idea?

Not very, the use of over the counter glasses proves that its not that critical.

Its just the distance between the eyes, and clearly
with simple prescriptions, the distance isnt that critical.

Mine has been measured at 62 to 65mm at various times.

I don't think it's critical, as this distance varies anyway (when you look
at closer objects, the pupils come together), and your eyes will make minor
adjustments themselves, within reason.

(But if you want to double-check it yourself, use a ruler and a mirror: look
at the right-hand eye in the mirror, hold the ruler so the 0-mark is aligned
at the centre of the pupil; now look at the other eye in the mirror, and
read off the distance on the ruler of the centre of that pupil. Now you have
your PD for when both eyes are looking straight ahead.

Another way is using an existing pair of specs: draw a vertical line on a
sheet of paper. Hold one lens over the line so that the image through the
lens is centred (line is not refracted left or right). Mark lens with centre
of line with a dot. Repeat for other lens, and measure the distance between
dots. But note that with reading (close-up) specs, the lens centres may be
nearer than your PD for distance)

Depends on the glasses...

With bifocals or trifocals with narrow field of view in the inset
lenses, it will determine how well you can see at close ranges. With
progressive lenses, many of which have an EXTREMELY narrow field of
view in the mid- and/or close-range fields, it can be critical to eye
comfort.

My wife was never able to adjust to the progressive lenses she got from
Costco, even though she got the measurements in the store, not online.
With proper measurements and good lenses from another optician, she
adjusted rapidly.

I measured that distance by holding a metric tape (not strictly
necessary) under my eyes and having my picture taken. It was no problem
reading the scale to about a millimeter. Even if there is an error, it
is equivalent to having a bit of prism added. It is a relatively simple
thing to calculate, but it dependent upon the spherical correction. I
chose to have my error on the side of additional convergence because one
ey points out.

There are different "species" of cyclists. From those "survivors"
riding Huffies on sidewalks to those wearing lycra and riding almost
as fast as traffic for sport.

I'm talking though about the cyclist in the middle who doesn't belong
to any to those two species. I'm talking about the "Dutch style
cyclist" who rides for real purposes. The Huffies must go on the road
and the fast bikes... who cares.
