Yeah but Google Groups can be moderated right? So why this

Because few bother with moderated newsgroups.

Spend less than your income. Find alternatives. Live life moderately.

learn the difference between needs and wants.:) you NEED food to
live!! But you may WANT to eat out at fancy restaurants nightly, but
you dont need to do that to live.

Its far easier to make your wants a little less than your income.

Trying to make enough to buy all your wants just becomes impossible.
the more you make the more you want, into a spiral of unlimited
spending:( maxed out credit cards etc

Wants are part of living life. Needs are boring.

> Its far easier to make your wants a little less than your income.

It's much more fun to have an income that exceeds your wants. Again,
part of living life.

> Trying to make enough to buy all your wants just becomes impossible.

Some prioritizing is always needed, sure. Some wants really aren't,
at the end of the day.

We'd be in a great depression or worse, just like we ended up in one the last time a govt tried that just after a crash.

No thanks, if all I spent on was real needs, it would be a pathetic existence.

I prefer to eat better than the bare minimum that will keep my alive and healthy.

Depends on your income. Thats a lie with the lowest incomes.

Nope, not for everyone.

That isnt true of everyone.

How odd that none of mine are.

Not with the laws "made for the driver," but perfectly normal in
Holland.

Yep, clear the whole lane for him, exit the lane, leave him alone,
he's doing something heroic.

I've been looking for something like this in the $150-$250 range for
a while - tiny PC that can be wall mounted:

http://shop.revonate.com/Refurbished_Acer_Aspire_Revo_AR1600_U910_p/L-PT.SCL05.004.htm

I would pay an extra $35-$40 for one that has just enough space to
add an internal DVD burner, so that I could archive music and videos.
Then I'd pay another $40 on top of that for one that had the power of
one of those AMD energy saving dual core Athlon II's.

Probably 60% of the time on this would be spent listening to music or
watching videos, 20% web browsing, and the other 20% a mix of casual
gaming, writing and perhaps VOIP.

Can anyone clue me in on something that would at the very least allow
for the DVD burner, or is this about the best that I'm going to find?

Thanks!

You can't have it both ways. This is a mini PC. There does not look
like room for a DVD. The processor is slow. The memory is low, but
enough for XP. The power supply is only 65W. That low power supply is
because of no i/o devices. You'd have to use USB devices with their
own power supply. The value to price ratio is not there for me. Hey,
you got a new bigger house. Spread out and live a little. You could
find the equivalent PC with DVD at a garage sale for under $50 with
some luck.

Ed,
I am not a supporter of the Monkey - far from it. Nothing would please
me more than if you could drive that annoying simian away from our
bicycle newsgroups. Sadly however, you seem to be loosing the battle.
Right now it looks like you are the one who is going to be driven away.

Best of luck.

I don't think Big Old Ed can even take part in the "Masturbation for

Er. Yes. That was rather my point.

(This is not your ordinary campaign. But in light that I can't ride a

may be the way to go for those who want to do something against all

You inspire me to launch this campaign in which we practice 'self
love' (your words) instead of hate, and prove that the energy of the
world is better wasted on anything other than war.

And since you seem to practice what you preach (or so we hope), you
have to let us know when we start. We need to act ASAP, in light of
the international crisis with Korea as well as Afghanistan, Iran, etc.

This campaign sounds like something explosive, doesn't it?

Well, I rather do something else like riding a bike, but this is only

Well, that's where Tantra kicks in. I learned that the trip is more
important than the destination.

Now the thing is WE DO IT FOR PEACE, much the same way the Christians
use prayers.

Opus, I know you are not playing SneakySnake, playing mind games or
using delaying tactics with me. I'm assuming you are genuinely but
naively believing in the progress of bike facilities in this country,
or the rest of the Western World for that matter...

If the missing links of bike lanes/ bike paths were part of some
grandiose superhighway for bikes, there would be a Master Plan.
Moreover they would go places where people need it the most, and I
assure you that they don't take you anywhere in Miami. Key Biscayne
has bike lanes, but that where the guys in lycra suits go to train in
their fancy bikes.

You were almost killed by a savage driver ON PURPOSE and you still
believe in the general good will of the system. I would start by
calling it 'THE JUNGLE' and proceed to taming it.

It's easy and quick: BIKE TAKE THE LANE, CAR CLEARS THE LANE 30'
BEFORE AND AFTER... No mixing of PREDATOR and PREY, comprende? ;)

I guess you'd have to prove that the car hit you, so the burden of
proof would be on you.

I don't think the 3' law changes that and puts the burden of proof on
the driver.

3 FEET AND NOTHING IS THE SAME THING. The car must partially exit the
lane to give you clearance, but other cars are behind him honking the
horn. Guess WHO gives? Yeah, YOU, the weakest link in the chain.

This is NOT a step in the right direction; this is diverting the
attention from the issue that we are squeezed on the road with casual
disregard or criminal intent...

Nice & simple: If it doesn't work in "civilized" Canada, it sure won't
work in the American jungle...

A three-foot passing law alone will not be enough to protect Ontario's
cyclists from bad drivers.

You just have to look to Louisiana, one of the 15 U.S. states with
such a passing law. On Saturday, Michael Bitton, 34, a former Listowel
resident who is going to school at Louisiana State University, and is
a member of the university cycling team, was out for a training ride
when he was struck from behind. He's now in an induced coma in
hospital, according to news reports from Louisiana, and "fighting for
his life."

***

***North America is eventually going to figure out that, for all the
right reasons, we need more bicycles on our roads. Dust off your
bicycle and go cycling. And if the gas-burning dinosaurs start to
crowd you, it's your road and you paid for it. Take the lane for
yourself.***

Nope, it was just harder to prove that contact with the bike wasnt inadvertent.

Now all they have to do is prove that that clearance distance was not ensured.

It would be simpler to place the blame on the driver unless proven
otherwise. How about if the cyclist loses balance and falls into
traffic?

Easy, clear the whole wide lane for the cyclist. He's too fragile to
take chances.

I believe I heard an entrepreneur in Asia (on a financial station) saying
his margins are 90% on a hundred dollar a month for broadband, phone and tv.
My cousins in Greece pay thirty euro a month for triple play over ordinary
twisted pair phone lines (or so they say). I also believe I heard this 4G
like tripled in price from Clearwire to Sprint. Of course, the extra price
may be paying for more nodes and for advertising. What are the economics of
these things? What does it really cost them?

Short of my own proposal (cars clear the lane 30' before and after),
the 3' clearance means very little...

But since we are not having a government that cares for cyclists, the
next best solution is... BAN BIKES ON SIDEWALKS!

I live in Florida, where 3' feet is the law and yet most cyclists
doing practical things (not those in lycra) ride on sidewalks. They
are a danger to themselves and pedestrians! The law of the jungle is
simply passed down to the sidewalk, where the most vulnerable are the
elderly...

Make the cyclists retire or go on the road. Then there would be
another kind of safety only found in numbers. By the way, I'm semi-
retired. ;)
