I have an idea. Needs some work but basically we'd agree to a swap bums for
imigrants. We'd round up (for example) kids in the lower 20% of SAT tests,
plus welfare mothers with more than one kid, plus all the people New Orleans
sent to Houston, and so on, load them on C5s and drop them in the Matta
Grosso. Then we issue an equal number of immigration chits.
Ideas to improve this plan welcome.

My ancestors WERE the first Americans. They financed the commercial
development of New England, and the Rhode Island charter of 1667
granted them
(and their posterity) control of the colony in perpetuity.
There were two classes of colonists that mattered: the proprietors,
and the free men of the colony.
"Free" meant that they weren't slaves, and weren't indentured.
Problem was, the proprietors, who owned the land, could vote, and they
had political control.
The free men couldn't vote, since they didn't own any land.
Then, more and more Irish refugees arrived, to work in the textile
industry. The Irish demanded to be able to vote, and a short rebellion
ensued. This forced Rhode Island to adopt a state constitution that
gave the Irish the vote.
It didn't change much, they could vote, but they didn't own any land,
and they still had to work for my family.
That's a basic problem with so-called "democracy". People who don't
own anything, or have a pot to piss in, can gang up on the more
successful business people and land owners, and make them pay for
social services and other benefits
that accrue from the success of the entrepreneur.

Same thing happened to my maternal ancestors. They owned a big plantation
in what's now Connecticut and worked it with slaves. But when the Isish
showed up they "freed" their slaves (put them out in the street and pointed
toward Chicago) because they could hire Irish cheaper than keep slaves
(Slave got cradle to grave care remember).
Meanwhile, my paternal ancestors settled in the Shenendoah vally and began
milling grain. They never used slaves because apprentices did the less
skilled work instead. But, over on the Piedmont, big planters used slaves
and continued to do so because even Irish wouldn't work in the heat and
humidity.
A generation after putting all their Africans out to starve, Yankees got all
self rightious about two things - Southerners buying cheaper goods from
England and slaves. So they attacked the South in The War of Yankee
Aggression.
Imagine what the USA might be like if the few planters had hired Irishmen
and sent their slaves to Chicago.

How about lifting our own people up, .....
Great idea .... but how?
We have been trying and failing to do that for decades. LBJ showed that,
for less than 1% of the (then) federal budget, we could eliminate poverty.
At the time we had xx people living below the poverty level, most working
but unable to earn enough. For a loudy $billion we could fill the gap. So
cangress created his Great Society expecting poverty to disappear. But it
didn't. First, the workers making less than the poverty level quit because
they were essentially working for nothing more than they got for free. Then
most earning just over the level quit too (Would you work 40 hours a week
for just a few $$ more than the gummymint would pay you to not work?). So
the cost of the program skyrocketed. Then the birth rate among the
impoverished shot up because not only would the government pay their medical
expenses, it would pay them to have babies. Then, predictably, the IQ bell
curve became unsymeterical with a big buldge in the idiot and near idiot
ranks. So the schools adapted by dumbing down and declaring that smarter
kids who got bored at an idiots' pace were ADD and doping them down to idiot
level. Now they have reached voting age and 'Idiocracy' is upon us. All
this was predictable!
If you know how to fix that and lift our people up - including the millions
too stupid and/or lazy to find work in modern life, I and 1000s others would
like to hear it.
The village idiot has always been with us but now we support him/her and
encourage them to breed more of their kind.

Not even possible.
The big advantage of his scheme is that the immigrants
self select and the dregs stay back home.

5B pounds (assuming perhaps half is paraxylene from oil) with a 30%
recycled rate is perhaps 500k barrels of new oil / yr.
The US uses 21M barrels of oil / day.
With the average being less than 1 plastic bottle of water per person
per day in the US, it would be far more effective to simply eliminate an
average of a mile of driving per day.

My neighbor has not cleaned their house in 20 years.
Outdoor light fixtures are broken and never replaced.
The wood fence fell down and was left where it fell.
Trees are growing on their raised deck.
The windows are cloudy and never been cleaned.
Weeds along the front of the house are as high as the roof line.
The garage is packed to the walls and roof with shrapnel that can be
seen from the garage door windows.
Two dead cars in the driveway (down from 5 dead cars)
an old mattress and stove are next to the house.
garbage and dirty clothes fill up the hallways.
The basement is choked with cardboard shipping boxes form the home
shopping channel.
Water runs thru the toilet 24 hours a day.. the float is broken.
Here is an expert messy family.
