Yes, I contacted them at the appropriate email address about my

After 3 days, I have heard nothing back other than the automated email

That's because most people try to "hide" their mistakes. Sort of
like how people brag about it when they do well in the stock market, but
don't mention it to people when they lose money on a stock.

Rather than hiding mine, I enjoy writing, learning and hearing the
opinions of others on how they would deal with a similar situation.

Most companies (in my experience) ignore emails. You will get much
better results calling them on the phone, or sometimes by using the
"online chat" link on their webpage.

He will try to bargain for 5-6 pepper seeds through the mail and blow
$150 on a Windows XP that won't validate and so forth.

I try to bargain on EVERYTHING. If you don't try, you always end up
paying retail. Yes, I have been involved in trading seeds online. Many
times, I have helped out people who want seeds I have, and I've avoided
having to pay for new seeds myself. It's called the barter system.

Regarding the Windows XP, it actually didn't NEED to validate. It
was evidently a corporate version of XP Professional that was meant to
be installed on many computers. I bought it for an amount that I
thought was legit, but it turned out to be a pirate copy. Tried to get
a refund, but the guys who sold it to me were long gone. It actually
worked out fine, though - I often upgrade my hardware, and my
understanding is that a regular copy of Windows XP will assume you
backed it up and installed it on a new PC if too many changes are made.
I avoided all of that, since the XP Pro didn't care. Plus, when I
preordered Windows 7 upgrade for $53 shipped at Best Buy recently, it
didn't care that my old XP Pro wasn't legit - it allowed me to do a full
install of Windows 7 Home Premium.

> At times he purports to be somewhat computer savvy and
Well, at one time I did have a pretty good understanding of DOS and
Windows '95. I even got my CompTIA A+ certificate as part of my tech
support job at Systemax. However, things keep changing, and it is
difficult to keep up with all of the changes all the time.

>then he reveals a tremendous lack of knowledge of his own computer.
Revealing a lack of knowledge is how people learn - by asking
questions. The alternative would be acting like a know-it-all, and
rarely learning. I prefer the former.

>He changes names on the various groups, but mistakenly left his
>complete name and address in one place.
Actually, I've gone by OhioGuy for several years, and intend to keep
doing so. When I initially changed ISP's a while back, I may have
posted a couple of times with another one, but I can't really remember.
Anyway, I used to simply use my email address, but I started getting
WAY too much spam. Yes, I did post my whole name and address at one
point, but that will be out of date in about 6 weeks, after we move.
All I can say is that for a minute, I regressed to an earlier age, when
I wasn't worried about spammers & such.

> saying someone told him that in a nuclear attack, the electronics on

interesting read here:
http://www.futurescience.com/emp.html
<excerpt>
"In the old Dark Angel television series, an EMP attack is supposed to
have occurred on June 1, 2009, and the vehicles appear to be mostly
pre-1980 and post-2009 models. There is a good reason for this. Many
conventional gasoline vehicles produced since around 1980 may not
function after an EMP attack due to their dependence upon electronics.
This would obviously produce a huge problem for the United States after
an EMP attack. Merely moving disabled vehicles off the road would be a
major undertaking. Disabled traffic lights would add to the traffic
problems."

Now, granted, I don't know for CERTAIN that this thing would still
run - it depends a lot on where the warheads strike. For example, if
they strike close, the van and I would be vaporized, so no, the van
wouldn't run. However, my argument was mostly from the standpoint that
the van is much simpler and more durable than most of today's vehicles.
Since it was put together in 1968, it has no computer chips or small
electronics that it depends on. Many things that are done electrically
in newer vehicles, such as the windows and locks, are done manually on
the van.

Sure, they have PLENTY of cheap cameras, but I wanted the same thing
that we had previously. I use the camera to take photos to go along
with the articles I submit to magazines, and often I get paid an extra
$50-$100 if I include photos they can use along with the article.

However, I can't just use any cheap camera. Most of the sub-$100
cameras I see don't have anything close to the 10x optical zoom that
lets me get decent photos of things that don't happen to be very close
to me. The Fujifilm Finepix S700 is one of the less expensive cameras
I've found that offers what I need. Most of what I need is a good
optical zoom. However, I'm also used to the intuitive controls on the
S700 after using it for more than a year, so it is worth it for me to
try to find a refurb unit that I can get an extended warranty on. The
fact that the entire zoom apparatus is enclosed on this camera is also a
big plus, because I can use filters and other lenses, much like a more
expensive SLR camera.

Well, since a couple of you mentioned it on here recently, I thought
I would give everyone an update on our house situation. I think I
posted something on here a couple of months back about how we were going
to use a credit union financed home equity loan to purchase a house.
That fell through. At the last second, the credit union notified us
that, since we would no longer be living in our present property, the
loan would be considered a "business loan", and not a home equity loan.
The interest rate they wanted to charge was then more than 8%, so we
said no. (it was all annoying, because I notified them from the start
that we were purchasing a house to move into, not as an investment - so
they knew from the start that we would not be staying here)

Anyway, after that fell through as a source of financing, we looked
into getting an FHA rehab loan. We got set up through Wells Fargo for
one of those, and then unexpectedly found a HUD home listed for auction.
We looked at it, were impressed, and we won the auction for $60k.
(house previously sold for $117k 3 years ago) We will be putting about
$25k in repairs into it, which will be rolled into the loan. So our
total loan will be about $85k. It will have new appliances, new roof,
new water heater, new heat pump & heating system, new vinyl flooring in
kitchen & 1 bathroom, new doors - plus many other things too numerous to
mention as part of the rehab.

Anyway, we signed the documents, and have been in the process of
getting bids for the work. We got an early bid for all the work, but
then a family friend highly recommended someone, so we allowed him to
come out, look the place over, and then I waited and waited. Finally
got a bid from him, and then we prepared to sign the documents so that
he could do the work. At the last second, he called and said there was
a problem, that his work crew had joined the Navy. (yes, that is
seriously what he said) After speaking to someone else, I found out
that the real issue was related to insurance for the project.

Supposedly, he felt really bad about ditching at the last second, so
he called a friend who lives closer, and told him to take care of us.
This guy called me early this week, and I told him I was done messing
around, but that the fellow from the 1st large company we had gotten a
bid from was out of town this week, so if he could inspect the place,
look over my list of necessary work, and get us a bid by today
(Saturday), I would consider him for the work.

He seemed very gung-ho about the project at first, but after I
emailed him a complete list of the needed repairs, he never followed
through on contacting the real estate agent to look things over.

Anyway, I ended up feeling like I wasted nearly 3 weeks, partly
because I wanted to support a smaller, family business, and partly
because of my nature to want to keep hunting for a better deal. I was
pretty annoyed, because due to this delay, we will probably have to file
for an extension on closing, which will cost us a few hundred.

However, the upside from the delay is tremendous: I just heard that
congress passed a $6,500 housing tax credit, which we can take advantage
of! If we had picked a general contractor 3 weeks ago, and closed on
the loan already, we would not have been eligible.

What is great about this is that it is a REFUNDABLE tax credit. This
means that even if we already get our taxes down to zero with the child
tax credit, we can have up to a $6,500 check issued to us at tax time
next year. Yippee!

Oh for god's sake! When will people realize that they should be TAXED for
having children, NOT receiving tax CREDITS for producing more resource

And when you're in the nursing home with no kids to help you, the rest
of us will be paying for your care. But that is assuming that some
insurance reform gets passed ... otherwise you'll be ... where?

I wish I had paper bags to use. I use the plastic bags from shopping. With a
hot enough fire there is little to no flue problems. We tend to run the fire
hot if at all.

Fire starter bags here tend to contain the litter of bark from the log rack,
shredded junk mail, pinecones and some times old candle bits or crayons. Here
in Georgia there is much pine growth. We use the pine for short hot fires or as
kindling. This gives a hot enough start to burn the hard woods readily.

Summers here are on the hot side. I keep the air conditioning up to 80f so we
can handle going outside and working. In the winter we can add clothing layers
as needed to handle the cold outside. The house is kept at near 80f or above so
that summers are not so hard to adapt. Wood is free for us other than the cost
of cutting, splitting and carrying it to the house. Average heating bill is
$250 a winter, that includes purchase/ repair/ fuel for the chain saw and wood
splitter.

Picking strawberries for 12 hrs in the sun, miles from a mall, is not a
dream of most citizens.

Did you know that the people who are most OutRaged against the illegals
are the legal immigrants?

They interviewed one little-old-lady,"Do you approve of illegal
immigrants?" She: "They're ok as long as they don't break the law."

Actually, I think that is most peoples feelings.

Nope, particularly with her approach to repairing clothes
when they are so cheap to replace for peanuts from yard
sales and charity shops etc instead of getting a job etc.

I've always said it isnt really feasible to do any better than use a dictionary.

But a high speed net connection may not be in her situation.

Nope, it doesnt last as long sliced at the store as it does slicing it yourself as required.

Yeah,no shit. For example a crew is laying new sewer pipe under the
road close to where I live. I suppose they can't find an American
citizen that'll operate a bulldozer,front end loader,trackhoe or dump
truck.

And we won't bother you with facts like the one that the OP has a "microwave
combination oven", not a microwave oven.

But in the present case it's you who doesn't comprehend the facts...
that it's a combo has not a whit of bearing... the oven cooks with
microwaves, the conventional radiant energy portion functions to
brown. When the radiant energy produced by the conventional portion
is blocked by over crowding the microwaves will overcook the food way
before it browns. With those combo ovens it's far more important not
to over crowd than with single function ovens.
