This doesn't sound right to me. I can't imagine that a cross-cut
shredder can shorten the already incredibly tiny fibers all that
much. Even if they did, only a small percentage of the fibers
would be affected.

Here's a simple test. Tear a piece of paper. Do you see fibers
several inches long sticking out the edges? Can you even spot
the fibers without a microscope?

Funny I googled it and the only thing I found on my one or two quick
searches about paper recycling and short fibers was on wiki and that
said that paper can only be recycled 4 to 6 times before the fibers
become too short and get washed / carried away in the cleansing process.

takes it - saves the expense of packing peanuts.

For some uses, you can now buy LED lights, which are as efficient (or better) as
CFLs. They are still relatively expensive, but prices will continuously drop as
production ramps up.

Really? Last I checked, which wasn't long ago, was that the best
commercially available LEDs were somewhat less efficient.

There are 12V drop ins for tracklighting replacements for halogens.
And there are some 120/220 replacements as well.

The real difference seems to be that CFLs illuminate an entire room,
while LEDs (at least so far) are very good at lighting up a particular
object, but not in general room lighting.

Of course, this could change.

No. Lithium batteries have a cell voltage around 3.3V so they
can't be used to replace single AA cells. They can be used to
replace two AA cells though and this is common in digital
cameras. You can use either a single lithium battery or two
AAs.

I buy at least a 600 count sateen. The difference is amazing IMO. They are
nice and silky, the tight weave makes them wear better and they are even
warmer. I get mine on Overstock.com, the last set was $60 for California
King size.

Frugal is paying the lowest for basic functionallity,
not the highest luxury you can get for a given cost
in my opinion. If burlap would do the job, and it was
avialabel and chepest, then I'd use that.

OK but I want to buy sheets separately and NOT in sets.

IOW.... I may want to order two separate queen flat
sheets.... one for top and one for bottom.

You are mistaken, IMO. Frugality is deciding what you want and getting

shreds, the risk is neligible. The amount of time and money needed to
exract information from 2x4 mm shreds will in nearly all cases surpass
the possible gain, esp. considering that cheaper methods and easier
victims are around.

Any intelligence or police service will attempt it, if it seems
sensible to do so. It can be automated, though that's a fairly new
and expensive technolgy usually reserved for bigger shreds.

Paper that's shredded with a cross-cut shredder is not recyclable; the
fibers left aren't long enough to work with the recycling process.
It's OK to do this with a strip-cut shredder, but cross-cut paper has
to either be composted or treated as rubbish.

Well thats kind of interesting, I would never have thought that the
fibers could be to short to be recycled. I guess that means that it's
either trash or composting. I have no composting pile, in fact I have
never even tried it, I don't produce much organic waste as a single
male, but I guess I could use the grapefruit from the tree in my back
yard as the organic waste for a compost pile.

For many years about 1970 I had two AC/DC tabletop radios. One was a
very good name-brand model that was very heavy and took up about 60
cubic inches. The other was a no-name brand that took up about 250
cubic inches and was almost as light as styrofoam. It sounded better
because the box was big enough to get a good speaker response. The only
advantage to the expensive one was that it would fit in a jacket pocket.

My shortwave radio is like that expensive pocket radio: nearly 4 pounds
and 125 cubic inches. There's not enough air in that box for a good
response from the 3" speaker.

I got an improvement when I built an external speaker. I bought a
midrange and a 4" woofer. After finding the woofer's free-air
resonance, I calculated that I would need a box of 800 cubic inches.

For twenty years I've had a plastic boombox that now I use on my desk to
play music from my computer. I have the speakers nearly four feet
apart. The cones are 3" and the boxes 180 cubic inches. The response
is smooth with a gradual roll-off about 100 Hz.

I used to have two good boomboxes. I gave one to a teenaged niece
because the boombox she got for Christmas had a horrible resonance. Not
all boomboxes sound good. One problem with hers was that the speaker
boxes weren't big enough.

Relatives are very proud of their $1000 stereo with two tiny satellite
speakers and one woofer. To me, it doesn't sound as good as a $100
conventional system. I think it's because the satellite speakers are
too small to handle the required frequencies well.

In 1981, my first set of NiCads lasted only a year. Ten years ago I
bought 8 NiMH that are still in daily use. I thought they were better.

I was wrong. The big secret is fast charging. Slow charging allows
crystals to grow, and they cause internal shorts. Soon your battery
won't hold a charge long. Then it won't charge at all.

Two drawbacks to NiCads are that a given size probably won't hold as
much charge as NiMH and the cadmium is toxic. Advantages are that a
fast charger can charge NiCad more reliably than NiMH, NiCad will hold a
charge more weeks, and NiCad will last more cycles.

It depends on how much power you draw. An alkaline cell has more energy
than a rechargeable, but you can't get all the energy out because
internal resistance increases as the battery drains. An alkaline won't
supply as much energy to a 5-amp load as to a 1-amp load. If you let
the alkaline rest, resistance will drop and you can get some more energy
out of it. So it's complicated.

I don't pay attention to that. It's easier to keep charged cells handy.
I'm afraid the ones with the highest capacity may have layers too
thin to last long.

I'd look for a charger that has a light for each cell. I think most
have a light for each pair of cells. I don't like that. When you have
a light for each cell, the microprocessor knows when that cell is charged.

No problem. There may be a problem between NiCad and NiMH. I have a
charger that will charge four NiMH on four circuits in 20 minutes or so.
It warns against charging NiCad. I have a slower fast charger that
will work for either.

I got an MP3 player that uses 1 AAA. I wish it used AA. Instead of
fooling with AAA rechargeables, I'll buy a new player. I got an LED
flashlight that uses 3 AAAs. I'll use it as little as possible. Maybe
I ought to look into the feasibility of AAA rechargeables.

Pan,

I think you should seriously consider hybrid rechargeable batteries.
One added advantage with these batteries is that, once charged, they
hold the charge for a long time (better shelf life).

Regular rechargeable batteries slowly lose their charge (even when not
used) and have no juice in them when you really need them.

Wal-Mart used to sell them (I don't recall the brand) for much cheaper
than online price. Use the keywords "hybrid" and "rechargeable" on
Amazon to find those batteries.

I bought 8 of those batteries at Wal-Mart last year for use in my S2-
IS camera and I am extremely happy with them. I used to have plain old
NiMH rechargeables before and had bad experience (no energy when I
needed them).

Logan has done an excellent job of answering this, I'll just add a
few points. Most of what I'll add is about NiMh.

Apparently for high drain devices like power tools NiCd are superior.
Otherwise NiMh are terrific, particularly in digital cameras. A NiMh
battery will run a camera many times longer than a set of a alkalines
before it needs recharging.

They do have a few quirks though. If your NiMh batteries have been
sitting around they may take several charges before they come up to full
capacity. Once at capacity they have a nice long slow decline of
capacity. Number of charges possible is higher than NiCds. I have seen a
NiMh fail while charging though.

It's hard to compare becaue you have to consider discharge rates. As
mentioned above I find that NiMh batteries last much longer than
alkalines although they have similar AHr, I *think* a AA alkaline is
around 1500mAHr. Go for the bigger number, particulary within a
manufacturers line. Usual caveats about buying from dollar stores (like
Big Lots) apply.

If you want something in a low drain, long life device like a remote or
firealarm, alkalines should be your choice.

NiMh tend to come at a max size of AA, I've seen covers that turn AA's
into D's. About 2700mAhr was the biggest I saw last time I went shopping.

The one caveat here is fast charge NiMh. You can't charge regular
batteries in a fast charge NiMh charger. But the slow chargers dominate
the market anyways. The fast chargers and batteries are clearly marked.

Most of the regular chargers come with a wall wart, you may wish to
look for one with a little more ooomph for a little faster charge as
NiMh can take hours to come up.

There is a worldwide dying of bees that are esential for pollination
of fruit crops among other plants. In China the bees and much else in
insecta had disappeared much earlier. Overuse of pesticides is
blamed. The orchard growers faced ruin. They asked the government
what to do. The advice came back that they would have to do the work
of the bees themselves. And so they did. I don't know enough about
pesticide use currently in China to have an opinion. But I believe
now that the negative consequences are known insecticide use is much
more judicous. The consequences of overuse are obvious.

So the government agencies and the farmers came up with this work
around. Pollen is collected and dried for two days. Then a
pollination wand is made from tying a few down feathers to the tip of
a slim bamboo fly rod. The fluff is dipped into a bottle of pollen
and dusted on the (apple) blossoms. The result is the earlier story
on hand wrapped apples while they mature to perfection. Thje PBS
story quotes the government expert as saying that this hand
pollination method is probably not sustainable. One worker can
pollinate 30 trees. Its hard work As peasants grow richer and find
more rewarding work this practice will probably die off in 20 years or
so. My hope is by then they will find the cure for the bees (dying
off) by then.

As for JonLeipzig's innate racism that anything Chinese must be
inferior an toxic the best rebuttal is that hundreds of millions on
this planet prefer to spend their money where the best buys are. They
live pretty happy and untroubled lives. Jon's fears are self induced.

It is a cross cut shredder. I guess I could put the shreds in a paper
bag an put it in the recycle. I tried just dumping the shreds in the bin

I put the shredded paper in small paper grocery bags and drop them in
the recycling bin.

Assuming you are in the USA: Have paper bags gotten out of fashion?

Myself, I put the shreds into our bin, though not at last. Then only
a few , like 30 or so, escape the bin when it gets
emptied. Neglectable pollution, as they scatter very quickly and
decompose.

Yes I am in the usa. And paper bags have almost completely gone away. At
least in the area I live. The shreds do scatter nicely, and that
certainly would reduce the possibility of someone putting all the little
pieces back together.

I don't get paper bags anywhere. Seems like everywhere I shop gives out
plastic bags. I think I will just start a compost pile with the waste.

It's store policy - once my wife was in the checkout line, and they caught
the fact that a bag of diapers was marked wrong. We missed it, but they
voluntarily gave us $25+ worth of diapers free. Should I have just said,
"Oh, no thanks, - we don't want the free diapers." ? No, it's a policy they
have in writing.

I believe that large stores like this often mark things incorrectly on
purpose to mislead and get higher profit margins from customers. The "right
price or it's free" policy is put there by corporate headquarters as a check
on this - one that can be enacted by consumers who are paying attention.

At the same store, my wife finds on average that 10% of the time, they try
to overcharge on at least one item.

Once I found steaks that were marked down quite a bit. Each steak had
both

1) a sticker marked 40% off
and
2) a sticker marked $1 off

These are those yellow markdown stickers that only the meat department
guys have, and which come apart if you try to peel one off and put it on
another item, so obviously both were supposed to be on there. (they weren't
moved from another item)

Doing the math, these were $4 steaks that I expected to get for between
$1.40-$1.80, depending on the order that they took the markdowns and applied
the % off. The lady at the checkout counter tried to just give me $1 off,
and I called her on it. She called the butcher guy up front, and he started
saying it was a mistake, and he was actually trying to peel the 40% off
stickers off of my steaks! I had to tell him to go ahead, but that I would
have to notify the district manager that they weren't honoring posted
prices. (which is illegal in our state - to post a discount, then not honor
it) They finally let me have it.

Was I being a "bad Christian" in your book because I stood up for my
consumer rights, and tried to get our budget to stretch a bit more? I think
not. Turning the other cheek does not mean giving up when somebody doesn't
want to honor an advertised or posted deal.

Besides, even Jesus got angry and violent once when he noticed marketers
profiteering at the public's expense. Remember, at the temple, where a
number of merchants were selling sub-par sheep for sacrifice at inflated
prices? They were taking advantage of people, and Jesus experienced
righteous indignation. He angrily drove the whole bunch of them out of the
temple.
