Here in the USA, the FCC has pre-empted the authority of any
homeowners' association to impose restrictions on this type of antenna.

That's good to know. When manufacturers test fluorescents, I think they
run them four hours at a time. If I'd seen data for shorter on-times, I
could have calculated the wear and tear of starting a tube.

I hate it when F40 tubes get blinky, for fewer stores carry them these
days. In the kitchen I switch my twin fixture off several times an hour
when I'm popping in and out. I've wondered about the break-even point.

Suppose a pair of tubes cost $6. Each cycle would depreciate them 0.003
cents. If the fixture uses 100 watts at 10 cents a kWh, that's .00028
cents a second. I imagine any starting surge is much less than .00028
cents.

So the break-even point is 11 seconds, excluding switch wear. (This
house has switches that have been in daily use since 1925.) If I won't
need the lights for six minutes, switching them off also means fewer
shopping trips to find tubes.

The big reason to switch off the lights every time I leave the kitchen
is not to get into the habit of leaving all lights on whenever I'm home,
as Ann Landers seemed to recommend.

There are some lithium rechargeables used for power tools. Two
advantages are that they are smaller than NiCads of the same capacity
and they will hold a charge a very long time. Two disadvantages are
that they don't last as long and they are expensive to replace.

Three things used to kill NiCads pretty fast: the old 14-hour chargers,
leaving them on a trickle charge, and letting them sit unused. These
three things let crystals grow, and the crystals drain the charge
internally. A modern fast charger charges your nicads and shuts off.

Another problem is memory effect. If for example, you normally recharge
before a cell gets to down to 50%, before long it will appear drained
when you get down to 50%. Instead of throwing it away, you can erase
the memory effect by giving it time to drain completely. One method
would be to leave it 24 hours in a one-cell flashlight.

Nine years ago, when NiMH was supposed to be so much better, I bought 8
AA cells and a fast charger. I also soldered a resistor to a battery
holder so that when a I think a cell went dead too soon, I can give it
time to drain completely before recharging. I've had those cells in
daily use and so far haven't seen any deterioration.

Treated that way, NiCads are supposed to last longer than NiMH. Two
drawbacks are that they won't hold as big a charge and they become
hazardous waste.

FWIW, I have a 55 inch diagonal HD wide-screen, and for me the optimal distance
is when my knees are located about 6 feet from the screen. I started out with the
couch at 15 feet, then 10 feet, and ended up at 6 feet.

Yeah, I can watch the TV easily from the next room, but it's a much nicer
experience when I'm at the optimal distance.

Similar in a lot of areas. The sad part is that it happened because of
lack of coordination. As the landlord of an apartment complex for
example you can have them put in just one dish (so you would then have a
max of two) and the tenant is connected to the shared dish for the
particular provider they choose.

But, with HD sets the aspect ratio is different. The width is much
wider than the height, and the size of screens is always measured
on the diagonal. So, to get the equivilent height of a 25" standard
4:3 TV you'd need something like 32" or more.
A 20" HD set would be tiny. Of course, there are 4:3 sets that are HD,
but you will still get a shorter picture height for true HD sources.
