And how do you open an account at a bank without them being able to
identify you? You suggested above that we open an account, cash the
check, and close the account. I don't know of any bank that will open
an account without valid ID.

You use false details, stupid.

Presumably you actually are that stupid.

Have a look at how illegals do that sometime.

Again, the only way to do this is to go to the bank upon which the check is
drawn and cash the check. Also, you SHOULD NOT have any accounts there, or
they will come after you if it bounces. You need to walk out with green
money and no paper trail, and you're set. If there is no local branch, don't
take the check. Accepting credit cards is expensive, accepting PayPal is
REALLY expensive, but they are the safest way to go since cash only works
for in-person sales.

Whats the most reasonably priced and easily arranged (i.e. frequent cheap
flights and easy transport at the destination end) weeks holiday break at
the sea side, in Spain or similar nearby country; for an elderly couple

Firstly I'd work out which of the London Airports they want to fly from,
then look online at possible destinations.
Do they want to book each part independently or take a package? If it's a
package then get your travel agent to do the research.

The easiest has to be flying to Malaga and staying at one of the resorts on
the local train service between there and Fuengirola but these are not the
prettiest of resorts.

A nicer idea is to fly to Faro and use the local train to one of the
resorts. But here you have to catch a bus or take a taxi from the airport
to Faro station (you can get a taxi all the way but it isn't going to be
cheap). It is possible to stay in Faro, but as it's behind the lagoon it
doesn't really have a beach that you can walk to, but then you can use the
bus/train to get along the coast. (I can recommend the Hotel Faro for it's
central location near the bus/train station - don't book the Ibis it's miles
from anywhere that you would want to get to.)

Both airport have lots of Easyjet services from more than one of the London
airports

How elderly? Fit eldery? Savvy elderly?
Malaga airport has a good train service to local resorts. The area though is
full of scammers and pickpockets.
Lagos and Tavira have excellent reasonablt priced 4&5 star hotels and can be
reached by train from Faro.
Estoril might be an option if they want a quiet place. Easy Jet fly to
Lisbon. Bus from airport to station and thirty minutes to Estoril on trains
that are now very safe with security guards and police on all trains.
Malta might be an option and has good bus services around the island.
Derek.

Barcelona has resorts easily accessible by train (and also bus) too.
Pretty easy to take the bus from Malaga to other resorts- e.g. Nerja.

I generally find it slightly easier to get cheaper flights to Barcelona
than Malaga but YMMV.

They opened some new terminal areas at Barcelona airport early this year.
The result was that if you fly Easyjet you're in for a hell of a long
walk and with very poor signposting. Better ensure that this couple can
handle that.

As a city destination (it doesn't have much seaside) Barcelona itself
makes a lot of sense for an elderly couple, as its public transport
system is very easy to use.

The police is also engaged on a profitable campaign against speeders.
Not Christian, but profitable. They set up a speed trap, and they are
ready to make drivers part with their money.

And yet people take chances because then they go to the lawyer and he
finds a way to fight for you, and make you part with more money.

See, I've said the Christians are to blame for everything, just that
they are happy with the status quo, which shows indifference for this
mundane world.

I don't want to get philosophical here. ;)

Then we need igloos for Alaska, and Hammocks for the summer in the
Lower 49.

The point is that we plant a lot of trees and consume as little energy
as possible, short of riding a bike, which is nearly impossible under
the current lawless conditions on the roads.

If you value your privacy, you may have the option to collect your
winnings without a news conference, although your name and hometown
typically must be made public.

Another tip: Get an unlisted phone number as soon as you can. People
from around the globe are going to try to reach out and touch you for
loans, gifts, charitable contributions and funding for their great
business ideas.

Get your team together. At a minimum, you'll need an accountant, a
lawyer and a financial planner. Don't expect much help from the
lottery itself, because it can't risk the legal liability of offering
advice. Plenty of financial professionals will offer to assist you --
Lang said he and his co-winners received "hundreds" of pitches from
financial advisers of all stripes -- but without significant research
you won't be able to tell the crooks and incompetents from those who
know what they're talking about.

Lang said many of his encounters with these advisers weren't good. One
lawyer told Lang he could quickly prepare a trust for $17,000 -- a
trust Lang actually had done for $2,500. A financial adviser Lang
interviewed but opted not to use sent him a bill for $450.

"I sat in his office and drank a bottled water, and he wanted me to
pay $450," Lang said. "I asked him to itemize what he did for me that
was worth $450, and I never heard from him again."

You may not be able to rely on friends and family for referrals,
unless your nearest and dearest happen to be multimillionaires with
advisers skilled in managing big sums. You may instead want to find
out who advises the wealthy in your community and start your
interviews there. But don't assume the rich always know what they're
doing. Think Bernie Madoff.

Mine is a two stroke so it's probably different. But, it's good to know
that the edger actually works "very well". I might consider getting one.

As for leaf blowers, I ended up with the huge backpack two-stroke 180mph
Echo, which does a decent enough job.

I've had a whole series of two-stroke lawn vacuum/blowers (the type that
has that long nozzle and bag) but almost always:
- The blower is anemic
- The vacuum is pretty good
- But the bag zipper always breaks making the vacuum also useless

Maybe I'll open a separate thread on how to get a better outdoor yard work
vacuum for home. :)

If that's true, it's a trick on me that I added two inches to the 16-inch
string (to make it 18 inches) for the purpose of having the string last
longer ... only to find that it might make the string actually last
shorter! :(

It does the job on my couple of hundred feet of edging each week,
anyway.

Let me elaborate, a little. I don't use it to blow leaves; got none
(left them behind in Vermont, with the taxes). I use it to blow the
grass clippings off the street and driveway after I do the edging. It
does a nice job of that, and the bark mulch, red sand, and Mica that
inevitably washes out of our flower beds.

Photographic film and silicon image sensors do not respond to low
temperature thermal infrared. Usually over 99.98% of that is of
wavelengths longer than 3,000 namometers. Film that responds much past
1,000 nanometers is about as common as hairy eggs. Silicon image sensors
only go out to about 1100 nm, faintly to maybe 1300 nm.

Good point.

Yes. I have a Dewalt grinder just like that, only my stone is new (his was
old and maybe old is better).

I also have dremel tools and files but for now, I think we have our answer
on the sharpening:

a) Some people never sharpen; others do about yearly.
b) It won't make much different; but it might make some difference.
c) Almost everyone removes the blade to sharpen & balance; some don't.
d) Easiest balancing method I've seen is that which the Craftsman manuals
says to do which is to hang the blad on a nail horizontally.
e) A new blade (for my mower) is $14.50 + 10% tax + shipping to CA; while
the nearest Briggs & Stratton shop won't charge less than $45 to sharpen (I
didn't ask about tax) and I have to bring the lawnmower and/or blade to
them.

I remove the one nut holding the blade, which takes about 5 minutes, and
sharpen it with a bench grinder. I have more control on how much to
remove and I am able to balance it.
My 18 x 46 tractor's mower deck has three blades. I remove the whole
deck before winter because I have a snow blower attachment that goes on
the tractor.
I have all winter to remove and sharpen the three blades.
You might be able to get a replacement blade at HD or Lowes. Check
their one-line mower supplies.

a decent set of choices for less than $5 each

Mcmaster also has stainless but they are more expensive.

Huh? Since when are wooden hooks "trailer trash"? The indoor ones are quite
pricey at the Big Box stores. Yes, you would need to have decent woodworking
skills to make nice ones, but they would hold up very well. Oh, and PLONK!

Ever notice newer hooks don't normally have as sharp a hook on the end
as older ones? Stuff tends to fall off. I once took one of those cheap
brass finish hooks to the garage to heat it up and give it more of a
hook. Failure didn't take long at all. With just propane it quickly
melted and half of it hit the floor. Damn, pot metal!

No, no, no. You talk about the small mansion you are building and ask
for 5 or 6 samples. I did that once for some electronic parts...
actually they did it to me! I told them what I was working on and
wanted to use a certain custom IC they made. They offered me samples
and asked how many I would need. Not being too greedy I asked for 5 or
so, they would have cost me about $85 a piece.

I thought that 80 dollar price for one simple ss coat hook was a joke until
I looked up the link and saw it's true.

Can they really cost 80 bucks for a simple stainless steel coat hook?

What's it made out of anyway? Gold?

No, "Stainless Gold"! ;-) Actually the only thing I saw that made it
very different is they mount from above (vertically?) Still not worth
the cost, but different.

You must understand that I am not referring to the $80 per copy stainless
steel varieties offered by some stores. These would just be steel, prone to
rust, normal everyday bathrobe hooks.

We agree on many respects, Brother, but not on this one. Not that we
should give opiate to kids, but that the government really cares about
the welfare of kids...

We are making addicts out of kids as we speak. Millions of them,
making them die a slow painful death, and sometimes even making it
difficult for them to get healthcare, again with the full support of
the Christians.

I'm talking about the biggest addiction in America: JUNK FOOD
compounded with LAZY LIFESTYLE. In Scandinavia and the UK, they
regulate that, but not here. Congress even moved to prevent lawsuits
against the junk food industry, and now it is banned without further
explanation.

Talking about STUPIDITY, my little mouse knows he must be spin the
wheel to be healthy. But the Christians go to church and then go
shopping. They seat and watch TV --certainly not Animal Planet-- and
grow fat.

And they feel real proud of their wars everywhere. Surely they will
win before the end of the world, which is coming soon anyway. So who
cares?

By the way, my little mouse is always looking for a mental challenge,
you know what I mean? ;)

Thanks. The idea is to throw water and see where it goes.
Insulation damage is insulation dmamage, water or wind.

I called the expert, who I respect a lot, and he basically offered to
look at it at his hourly rate. His expertise is probably worth more
than the equipment, but I have to compare that cost to the cost of
just adding a new layer of siding (with energy stimulus). And,worse
of all, I have a co-owner who is reluctant to do anything.

How is water going to tell you where the leaks are. It will just
disappear into the house, not show up on IR imaging?

What about a dye that is colorful when wet and white when dry, so it
could detect leaks in wallks and even grout because the leak stays wet
longer than the rest?

That cool IR cam Rich posted really got my engineering interest alerted!

PS, water keeps a leak damp and has a different temperature signature
than the rest of the wall. But that is why a day and night IR picture
helps track the different temperature changes.

No.

There are industrial flow meter solutions (doppler, transit-time,
mechanical, etc).

There is no demand for a home version.

I'm some-what inclined to do home automation, and the only thing I would
do along those lines would be to install a mechanical flow meter where
my main water line enters the house. I'd only be interested in total
water flow, not the flow to individual branches (bathrooms, sinks,
toilets, etc). I'd probably install a pressure and temperature sensor
at my main water supply point first before I'd ever install a flow
sensor.

Mechanical flow meters are also known as turbines and rotometers.

Here's some examples:

http://www.omega.com/ppt/pptsc.asp?ref=ftb8000b&Nav=gref02

I've worked with doppler and transit-time flow meters used to measure
blood flow in biomedical applications, so I know how they work and why
they are the preferred tool to measure blood flow in arteries in living
subjects. But for home water consumption, I wouldn't go with
ultrasonic.

And how do you open an account at a bank without them being able to
identify you? You suggested above that we open an account, cash the
check, and close the account. I don't know of any bank that will open
an account without valid ID.
