I would suggest to them that if that is really what they want to do,
take a year or two and try it, and then if they find it's not working
out, *then* they can go to college (and they will undoubtedly appreciate
it more, be more motivated to go, and do better).

Way back in the dark ages when I was young (and my oldest child just
turned 24), I heard someone say that they thought it would be a good
idea to enforce having all high school graduates go out and work in the
real world for a year before starting college, because that perspective
would be invaluable at knowing what they will be up against when they
finish college and will motivate them to finish.

I wonder why more families don't just take one of those $50K starter jobs over

On thing I'm having hard time finding is a portable
fan that doesn't suck up dust form the floor and spew
it everywhere

Seems as most portable fans are made to set on the
floor. To my thinking sucking air form that area is NOT

Two windows on the same wall and 6' apart? That is not a good
configuration (on a fluid dynamics perspective). Cooled air is being
flushed out immediately by the exhaust fan.

Keep all the doors and windows closed and use the cooler in the room
just like a fan. If you insist on fresh (outside) air, do one of the
following.

1) Keep the exhaust fan in a window as far away as possible from the
inlet window.
2) If the above is not possible, just remove the exhaust fan and close
the outlet window and you will be much better off.
3) Last choice, take out the exhaust fan from the window, keep the
window shutter open just 2 or 3 inches.

There is really no need to drive out the air - it finds its way out
all by itself.

A swamp cooler does not work anywhere near as well in a humid
environment than in a dry one, but apart from that, we have one here in
northern California and it keeps the house nicely cool and hardly uses
any more electricity than when we had fans running all over the house.

I read an article in the NY Times which mentioned "icall" as one of
the few or only, FREE computer-to-phone (anywhere in the U.S. or
Canada) programs. It is also one of the few where they say it may work
on dial-up. I have a very slow dial-up connection, but I was still
able to call friends' phones when they weren't home and listen to
their messages, or if I called them at home, hear them talk, but my
voice broke up to much.

Definately worth trying and I can't wait to try it when I get
broadband in a month or two. I use a mic, and earphones (instead of a
headset which I don't have) and the software was very clever in
setting things up for you, testing the mic etc. No addresses and
credit card numbers to sign up and start calling.

My question is, for someone who uses icall on broadband and can
RECEIVE calls. When you are online, and someone calls you on it, does
a screen pop up as you hear the phone ring? I get neither, because of
my very slow connection probably. Then again, the person was calling
me from a regular phone. Do they have to call in from a computer?

When I get wireless Broadband, I plan on ditching my land line,
hooray. I can't wait to say goodbye to it.

about AOL, though. You probably can get a second account with Juno as
well, but I don't have much recent experience with them.

You do know, don't you, that the "position" they are advertising is
placing the same ad you just read and trying to reel even more suckers
in to pay for information on how to set up the same situation for
someone else, right? If you are in the US, go to the US Postal Service
site and look up "envelope stuffing scams," because it's the same thing.

Can you set up an automatic transfer to Key Bank from the bank where
your paycheck gets deposited? My credit union accepted that as an
auatomated payment to get a free account.

Because they are usually shot in economically depressed areas with
relatively low overall market value homes. You will never see an episode
like that in the likes Boston or San Francisco.

Los Angeles is a low market value region? Hmm...and I do recall one
they did in Sacramento as well not too long ago. I can see what you
mean about SF or Boston; I'm presuming even a major dump is
outrageously priced to begin with so it'd be a very low profit margin.

I couldn't wait to see this episode featuring one of my favorite
haunts, "The .99¢ Only Store". All the designers were given $399 and
99 minutes to shop; the room they were decorating had 3 white walls
and a generic Ikea white couch/coffee table. They could also spend
part of the $399 on 2 paint colors of their choice. The room only had
to have the illusion of style; not necessarily the function.

some of the designers used chili pods and pinto beans to make "rugs";
others used more traditional items like the candle plates and bamboo
that store has a gazillion of.

Myself...I think some were very creative in "repurposing" the items
but others could have done more; even if only 2 paint colors you could
still buy the following to make colors/dyes:

Beets, teabags, mustard.

Anyway...I'm sure it'll be repeated if you're interested.

They do still have a bit of that nasty synthetic taste. But, they're a
LOT better than they used to be when they were made with saccharin.
Plus they have less of an aftertaste than the regular drinks that have
high-fructose corn syrup.

That said, I only drink them because I like them better than having water
all the time. For someone who doesn't like them, there would obviously
be no reason to partake. :-)

Once a week, or less often, a RDA set of pills comprising A, B6, B12
complex, C, D, E and and occasional iron pill. The dieticians over
the years has not made any recommendations to change my practice. We
have a doc and a prof doc in the family so access to good advice is
not a problem. All of us believe that if we can do without "extras"
the better. We are particularly wary of medications of any kind.

The iron pill causes very black stools meaning most of the iron is
excreted. I am not quite sure if the iron pill accelerates the
breakdown of the haem component of red blood cells or if the iron is
excreted unabsorbed. Whatever it looks processed and may have been
part of an extraordinary body function. One of the vitamins also
cause yellow urine thus my minimal vitamin intake. I avoid most
things I suspect cause an extraordinary load on my metabolism.

Vitamin deficiency does cause dietary diseases. Since over the
decades long period I did not have any of that and my weight had been
fairly stable though on the high side of normal I assume I have an
adequate and balanced diet and never gave food types further thought.
EAt some of every type of food and I am covered.

Into this sunny picture comes some rain. I had Chronic Fatigue
Syndrome since childhood and of course didn't know it. It wasn't
severe enough to disable me but it was bad enough as I grew older to
really mess up my life. At the age of 50 I discovered that it was
brought about by soy products, gluten, legumes and a few more plant
proteins (long story). Avoiding them really improved my quality of
life and that is the extent of my interest in diets. The other
"rains", shared by a few of my siblings, is blood cholesterol on the
high side of normal, three of us with blocked vessels that needed
operations, and gallstones that also needed to be removed. Otherwise
we have remarkably good health.

One thing college is good for is "finding yourself" - finding out what
subject areas you like/dislike. And doing a bit of growing up!

If nothing else, I would suggest they take a few business related classes.
Perhaps management, accounting. Then a few classes related to whatever
business field they were thinking of going into.

management, accounting, etc. Maybe they will hate it or find it boring.

True, and the ultimate is to be paid very well for
doing what you would be happy to do for free.

Trouble is that it takes a lot more than a day to work out the downsides
with some jobs, particularly the mindless bureaucracy that so many jobs
involve. Those sorts of 'work experience' situations never really expose
the kids to that sort of real downside with the job.

Thats true in spades with the professions etc. You're never
going to be able to get a clear idea about what life for a GP
or criminal lawyer or civil engineer is like that way.

Most of the current practitioners cant really spell out the downsides either.

If one drinks water (much better tasting IMO), one typically does not
crave snacks to the same extent.

Another article suggested drinking diet sodas is mostly a marker for
those who are already overweight (The overweight tend to be the biggest
user segment, hoping to lose weight) .

Nevertheless, I've never tasted a diet drink that didn't taste (mostly
after taste) like turpentine.

(major fixer-upper) and with the carrying costs, renovation, closing and
sales commissions, I think it's lucky just to break even. I also see couple
of bank own properties (foreclosures) discounted at only 10% (also fixer
uppers) so any profit goes to real estate commissions. I just watch those TV
shows for the entertaining value and scratching my head about how those
flippers buy properties at so much below market value.

They do have a method to get those houses; it seems that each "team"
does it differently though. And it does come down to location and
timing; there are many speculators out there who bought on the high-
end of the market and will have a hard time selling (and will likely
rent out).

The reason I watch those shows, especially the first time flipper ones
(Property Ladder is one of my favorites) is because I get tickled at
the over-optimistic time and money estimations. "I'm going to gut the
kitchen and bath, reroof and add on a room for $10,000...in 3 weeks
time". So many times I've seen them automatically yank out kitchen
cabinets that could be 1. refinished, 2. painted or 3. refaced. And
also adding high-end appliances and counters in a lower income
neighborhood is never a good idea. But I agree...it's more about the
head-scratching and entertainment; not so much education (except maybe
"what not to do").

cards I can find now are for state-to-state calls only. If a person uses one

Did something change that doesn't allow the sale of cards good for in-state
calls?

I usually purchase cards AT&T cards at Wal-Mart.

Does anyone have suggestions for some card that is good for in-state calls?
I don't like putting long distance calls on my bill; like using the prepaid
cards so I don't get an unwelcome surprise when my phone bill arrives.

Several states enacted regulations that tax phone cards the same way
a regular phone calls for instate calls resulting in additional minutes
being deducted for each call. My guess is some carriers got tired of
complaints from people who saw nine minutes taken off of a five minute call.
My suggestion is to find a local store with a large selection ,ask
what the best card is for your needs and buy the smallest denomination.
Some stores will sell you the best card,some will offer the most
profitable and some will sell you the one closes to the register.

I bought one of these a while ago:

for about 1/3 off, and it's been rainy and humid here in the Dallas area for
the past while. Haven't had the chance to use it until yesterday, when it
was hot and 33% humidity (according to the TV weatherman).

I fired it up, and used a thermometer to read the temperature of air going
in vs. air coming out. In my apartment, it read 95 degrees going in to the
fan, and 84 coming out of the fan. Not bad.
As far as ability to cool a room, well, it's limited. I have two windows
seperated by about 6 feet of wall space. I put the cooler-fan in front of
one window, and I have another fan in the other window that pushes the air
to the outside. It's pretty good if you get right in front of the airflow,
but anywhere else in the room, you won't feel much relief. It's also
somewhat noisy; it took a little getting used to on the slow speed. I doubt
most people would want to deal with the high speed--too noisy.

At night, it dropped the temperture 10 degrees F, from 90 F to 80 F.

All in all, it's ok . . . I've gotten used to sleeping in 80 degree heat (no
covers), and it provided sufficient relief to give a restful night sleep.
What's nice is the $$$ I saved from not running the AC. Using this thing
for 30 days will save me around $2 a night, or $60 a month. It'll pay for
itself in less than 2 months, and it'll be gravy after that.

It holds a few gallons of water, which isn't enough for an 8 hour run.
I'll probably add a 5 gallon water bottle held upside down, with a feeder
tube so that it fills up the fan's resovoir when it runs low. That ought
to fix that problem . . .

If it starts to rain again like it had been up through July, I'll just use
the fan by itself, and that should be ok.
