Not a good source. Full of outright lies and complaints from stupid people who don't understand how business works.

Check the Federal Trade Commission, your state Attorney General's Office and the Better Business Office for reliable complaint history on Angie's List, or any other business,

Whatever. I thought the "stupid people" were the ones that needed help with
this kind of stuff. It isn't like this anything new. This is from 2014:
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/why-angies-list-is-getting-a-rash-of-bad-reviews/

The last one had complaints only a a few days old. So I guess if you want
to take your chances with a less than stellar Angie's List--be my gues.

I once rented a car with keyless ignition (a Buick). It also had power
windows and you had to actually start the engine to raise or lower the
windows. Fail.

My gripe is the ones that are genuinely frozen solid. I could scrape
them across paper for a couple of minutes with no result -- unless
they're really putting down lemon juice for secret writing. I didn't
think about that until just now...

Yeah, I really hate that. You can keep the key in your pocket now, but

I recently had new carpets fitted, and cut the cost considerably (40%)
by fitting my own underlay. This was using a national warehouse-type
retailer - seems their models are based on a huge underlay mark-up.
Independents were more expensive.

A friend made similar savings by employing a local carpet fitter, who
was able to source underlay and carpet at competitive prices.

FWIW - this is the UK, where carpets seem to be going out of fashion to
laminates and engineered wood. That'd be IKEA for you.

I just finished taking out the carpet and putting in laminate in the last room. Way easier to clean. The laminate I laid in the first room is as shiny and clean as the newest room. This stuff is suppose to last thirty years, but as little traffic as they get, they'll last until the next century. And the stuff is cheap enough that I could see changing it out because I'm tired of one color and want another.

Just watch out for water spills on that laminate. A friend had one on

warped horribly.

The Mont Blanc fountain pen clones from China are really nice. I wish I
needed to use a pen more often than I do -- I played with it for a while
and then drained it so the ink wouldn't dry up in the nib or do whatever
else the ink does. It turns out that it's not easy to find fountain pen
ink any more, and it's not cheap. We bought washable blue, which is
kind of faded-looking, but the last thing I want to do is spill
permanent ink.

The fat one has a screw cap; the thinner one's cap snaps on, and the
snap mechanism was stronger than the mechanism that held part of the pen
together, but a little super glue fixed that.

It's nice to use a fountain pen again, but not worth the trouble.

Carpet dealers are generally local, or at best regional, so you should be asking for recommendations from people who live near you.

Best to go with a carpet dealer rather than a big box multi-trade store. Carpet is carpet, and the brand you choose will be the same from one store to the other. There might be a slight difference in price, but if it's too great the guy with the low ball price is probably selling you a different carpet than you think you're buying. Also, the dedicated dealers generally employ their own installers. The big box stores subcontract the installation to the next guy up on their list; who may or may not be competent and may or may not ever work for them again. The local carpet dealer is going to be much more responsive to a problem because their business is more dependent on satisfied customers than the big box national stores.

Angie's List is a good starting point. At least with them you know it's a legitimate business with all the locally required licenses, permits and insurance, not some fly by night hack who's using your deposit money to pay off his last job rather than buying your material. I've used them twice in the past 18 months to find contractors to build a deck, and replace the counter tops in our kitchen. Couldn't be happier.

Where can I find those complaints? I've not heard of any such issues in my area. I've been a paid Angie's List member for a little over two years. When I signed up I opted out of their email and phone offers and haven't a single email or phone call from them or any their registered businesses.

> Going with the big box stores like Lowes and Home Depot is a pretty safe bet

Sometimes, but not always. All of their installers are subcontractors, not employees so it's kind of catch as catch can in that area.

>--most of the smaller mom and pop type stores are too expensive.

It depends. We recently had quartz counter-tops installed in our kitchen. The original estimate from Home Depot was just under $3K, but by the time they added on "extras" like tear out and removal of the old counters and the plumbing the price jumped another $800.00. Plus it was going to take 10-14 days, start to finish. That's a long time to be without a functioning kitchen.

We went with a kitchen design firm we found through Angie's List. Not only was the total price lower ($3450.00 all inclusive) for exactly the same quartz, but the job was done in five days. So...I guess you get what you pay for. Sometimes you get more.

I used to think that the cheap old PaperMates would last forever. They
don't, but I've got some Uniball and Pentel gel pens from 1995 that are
still working and feel really good. Current favorite is a (modern) BIC

Lowes and Home Depot have provided good service in the past, both are nationwide, not likely to close their door after I put down a down-payment.

I got a watch at Walmart last Saturday. A Casio. Found one at $20 with a
ten year battery but that's the best I could do. No solar cells. No
automatic time set. I'll just have to set it myself, which in my
experience is very rarely. The battery will probably outlast me. It's a
digital and includes a stopwatch and dual time zone displays, neither of
which I'll likely ever use.

hchickpea@hotmail.com: Sep 04 12:19PM -0500

>but the articles kept telling us the "discerning" man needed an expensive
>watch.

That is yet another example of the media and advertisers either not
understanding the meaning of words or twisting them to their own purposes.

I'm probably one of the most "discerning" individuals you would ever meet. I
"discerned" as a child that I didn't need to wear a watch.

Moreover, there is a subtle psychological entrainment that submitting to wearing
a watch encourages. The importance of measured time is a side effect of the
culture of "class" and the subservience of the worker class.

The chime of church bells or calls to prayer at matins and other natural times
of the day were subverted into the chimes and clocks located in positions of
power, such as courthouses and town halls, built at some expense to tell workers
when to start and stop work, so as to give their "betters" a full day of labor.

The transfer of power from that to a pocket watch inferred that the owner of the
pocket watch was a representative of the power of the upper class. Hence, the
train conductor image, or the foppery that included special watch pockets and
fobs as further indication of power and wealth.

When the mass produced and more crude wristwatch was introduced, the band around
the wrist -in effect a handcuff - indicated subserviance and the open
willingness of the wearer to comply with time - but with the slightly daring
attitude - "Don't try to manipulate the time on your pocket watch to cheat me."

To me, the people who wear the ostentatious Rolexes or other watches are
declaring their allegience to nouveu riche fetishes and a culture that has no
clue that it is making a statement of voluntary enslavement.

When I was a teen, I wore a pocket watch, along with my keys to the state
hospital locked wards. The only time I have ever worn a wristwatch was when a
child's cheap mickey mouse watch was given in swag at a movie convention, and I
found the juxtaposition of cheap, small, "mickey mouse", and the idea of
subservience to that just too amusing to pass up for a couple of weeks. Nobody
understood, but I'm used to that.

I thought like that too until I actually got a digital watch :-)

The ones we bought have three tiny round dials above the time-number.
Absolutely useless unless you're a -5 myope, and even then 2/3 of the
info is useless.

I once saw a digital watch that would switch to look like analog if
that's what you want. Can't remember the brand.

You need only three tools: WD-40, duct tape and a hammer. If it doesn't
move and it should, use WD-40. If it moves and shouldn't, use duct tape.
If you can't fix it with a hammer you've got an electrical problem.

I'm on my second Citizen "Eco Drive" solar watch. The first one lasted
about 15 years before the battery wouldn't take a charge any more, and I
decided not to invest more $$ in it. The local shops wouldn't touch it,
so I would have had to send it back to the factory repair center.

Instead I spent about $100 more than a new battery for a new Eco Drive
with an analog face. It was the only titanium model that I liked. A
steel cased version would have been much cheaper, but I like the [lack
of] weight of the titanium.
