Mindlessly silly, particularly on that 'should never' claim.

Take note that anyone who can't actually post anything coherent, but
can post a link, is merely a spammer to me.

Same here. A link without any effort by the poster to describe what it
is and why it may be of interest is just rude.

[From the article]

Of the ten items, 4 are personal electronics (Laptops, Plasma TVs, DVD
players, & Camcorders.) Personal electronics are generally disposable
items in any case. Although I disagree with the article when it comes to
laptops, many people will want to get rid of one long before its useful
life is over. The silliest part of the article is that they actually
recommend that you buy an extended warranty with these items!

Two of the items are safety equipment (Car seats and helmets [bicycle
and motorcycle].) In both cases, they say you should buy new because
used ones might have been in an accident. However, most used car seats
have *not* been in an accident and the ones that were in an accident are
easy to detect. I can't say much about helmets.

Three are items that spend a lot of time next to your skin (Shoes, Wet
Suits, and Mattresses.) I buy shoes and mattresses new because the cost
is quite low (shoes run me less than $30 and last over 5 years,
mattresses cost less than $200 and last 10 years.) However, the articles
reasoning has nothing to do with cost, they make silly comments like
"Think of all the stuff you do on your mattress. Now think of sleeping
in someone else's stuff. Ewwwww." Of course most people consider it a
real pleasure to stay at a hotel on vacation... Think of all the stuff
you do in a hotel... *on the mattress*.

The last item on the list is "Vacuum cleaners". There is almost nothing
to an upright vacuum to break, yet the article says to buy new because
they are "prone to abuse" and new ones can be had for less than $100. I
tend to buy vacuums new simply because they are so cheap (I get the $40
ones which last me 5+ years,) but if I didn't have the $40, things might
be different.

Of course there are exceptions. For example, if a poster asks a
question, it seems entirely reasonable to respond with a link to a
site that answers the question. Why is any embellishment needed?

Another exception is when the subject line is sufficiently descriptive...

The subject is a pretty adequate description of what the article is about.

I would think used condoms would top the list. My first lamb skin was
$2.

The best customer service was when I flew out from the east coast to Las
Vegas with my Apple PowerBook G4 several years ago. About a year prior
to that trip, I was rushing to another flight and just as I took my
backpack with my laptop off my shoulder, the zipper came loose and the
laptop flew several feet and banged into a concrete curb and tumbled on
the ground several times. My heart sank when that happened.

The titanium case was bent and dented to the point where the slot for
the optical drive had to be pried open with a screw drive. It was warped
from left to right, but it started up fine and it worked for the better
part of a year.

The day after I got to Las Vegas, I powered up my G4 laptop in my hotel
room and I got nothing but a white screen with severe pixillation. I
tried power cycling it several times, but that didn't help.

I took the laptop to the Apple store in Las Vegas. A store employee said
it had obviously been damaged and that fixing it at no cost under the
warranty would probably not be approved. I asked them to send the laptop
away for a repair estimate. When I returned home a few days later, the
laptop was waiting for me and it was fully repaired at no cost,
including a new motherboard. I had an extended warranty on it, but I
expected the warranty to be voided by dropping it, but Apple came
through for me and I got another year's worth of use out of it until I
replaced it with a MacBook Pro.

Government loans consist of loans that are in some way guaranteed or
purchased by government owned corporations or organizations. For
instance, GNMA (Government National Mortgage Association) assists in
the financing of urban renewal and housing projects by providing below-
market rates to low income families. GNMA guarantees the payment of
principal and interest on FHA and VA mortgages through its mortgage-
backed securities program. It operates under the Department of
Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Toy and food recalls introduced
By Zhu Zhe (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-09-01 08:23
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2007-09/01/content_6072802.htm

The country's top quality watchdog on Friday introduced landmark
recall systems that require producers to take back unsafe toys and
foodstuffs.

Chinese children try out toys at a mall in Shanghai, China, Friday
Aug. 31, 2007. [AP]
If producers do not carry out recalls on their own, the government
will order a recall and fine the producers up to three times the value
of the products, according to two regulations published by the General
Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine
(AQSIQ).

The two regulations, introduced with immediate effect, follow the
introduction of a recall system for defective automobiles in 2005.

Both regulations state that producers must inform the public and
retailers, and report to the quality control authorities if it is
revealed that their products are unsafe. Retailers must immediately
stop selling the products and launch a timely investigation into the
defects or they will face a fine ranging from 1,000 to 50,000 yuan
($132 to $6,600).

Even if the products meet the country's quality safety regulations and
standards, the regulations note that toymakers should still carry out
a recall if their toys are found to be potentially unsafe.

If producers fail to voluntarily recall their products, which then
cause serious public harm, they will have their production licenses
revoked and be subject to criminal charges, according to the
regulations.

Liu Zhaobin, director of the AQSIQ's policy and legislation
department, said the recall systems were designed to strengthen the
State Council Special Regulations on the Safety Supervision and
Administration of Food and Other Products, issued in July.

"Our regulations make it very clear that producers must take the prior
and major responsibilities for preventing and eliminating unsafe
products," he told a press briefing.

Yet the AQSIQ should set up a management system of all recall
information and evaluate the recalls under the regulations.

Liu said the country did recall unsafe food and toys in the past, but
it was done "case by case" without a sound system.

The food and toy recall systems follow the issuing of a draft
regulation on drug recall last month by the State Food and Drug
Administration (SFDA), which stipulated similar recall procedures for
unsafe drugs and medical devices.

The AQSIQ also issued a regulation to standardize the inspection and
quarantine of exported aquatic products.

"As the world's largest aquatic products exporter since 2002, China
needs such a regulation to offer a legal basis for the inspection of
such products," Liu said.

These latest moves follow a spate of safety scares over made-in-China
products. Reports have revealed isolated cases of contaminated food
additives, unsafe toothpaste, seafood and even toys, and sparked
global concern over Chinese products in general.

Premier Wen Jiabao said China would face the problems squarely and
make consistent efforts to improve product quality. However, he also
noted that China did not support media hype and was against trade
protectionism.

Nancy Nord, acting chairwoman of US Consumer Product Safety Commission
(CPSC), also warned on Wednesday against turning a product safety
issue with China into a trade issue.

"I think it will be foolish to turn a safety issue into a trade
issue," she was quoted by Xinhua News Agency as saying.

However, having laws on the books and actually enforcing them are two
different matters. Witness the illegal immigration issue in the US.

I thought it was about time for a new thread, after having read some
of the good things under the hotel surprises thread. It's too seldom
we can praise a company.

One of mine: I sent for a fan from QVC, and it arrived with a broken
blade. Called cus. svc. and they sent a replacement at no extra
charge and it arrived it seemed in no time via express handling. I
returned the broken fan at their expense and the billing was correct
also. If a huge outfit like QVC can do it, what's the excuse for
these other companies?

Re: hotels. I received an online questionnaire from Best Western, but
there was little room for true complaints. It was merely a rating
survey, from 10 to 1, 10 being excellent. I had filled out the 'guest
comment' form tho, which was in the room.

There has been, and probably always will be, endless debate over what
is a good wife. There is

this article, supposedly from a May 1955 Housekeeping Monthly
magazine, that speaks directly

to this question. There are other sources as well that speak on the
issue. One is from

Aristotle, another is this one about "Do men really want a wife like
June Cleaver." They bring

up some very good points.

source : http://www.goodwife.com/

It is one of those questions that heats up each side of the debate and
truly has a different

answer for each man. What do you want in a wife? Beauty? Brains?
Charm? Home and family

oriented? Strong willed? Independent? Docile? If you write out a list
of the ten things that

you must have in your life partner what would they be? Only you can
decide the answers to this

question.
