This has nothing to do with it being an electronic item. What was
shipped was not what advertised. That could happen with anything. In
the case of college books, it could be listed as a senior-level biology
book and you might end up with a cookbook. If the seller says they sent
the biology book they listed, you're equally as screwed.

I've bought electronics off Ebay with no problem yet. One of them
though was an obsolete piece of Tascam equipment sold through one of
the Ebay stores and they said "as is, no idea if it works." Where
ones declared in great condition sell for $200ish, I bought this one
for around $40 and its worked perfectly for over a year. It was a
gamble but it paid off. I love Ebay.

It could (and, at times, does), but electronics have the notorious
reputation for most always not being up to the buyer's expectation /
most widely misrepresented items sold.

Sell on eBay, just before the next semester begins for maximum return,
charge realistic shipping there are flat rate priority mail boxes that
ship for $8.95, or if it will fit, flat rate envelopes for $4.60
postage. Not something to mess around with media mail shipping on.
If I buy used from the school I am usually able to sell at about 50%
of what I paid for it, used on Amazon or Half.com typically near break
even, new more like a third.

The last class I took required a brand new book, which was $130, used
wasn't available anywhere. I was able to get a digital version for
about $58 at safarix.com. Not everything is available in digital
format, but what is can be a big savings. Another thing to look into
is purchasing international editions online, generally much less
expensive than US editions, and they do have the same content.

Nope, someone who hasnt had a problem with an
electronic device from ebay, and I've bought heaps too.

Heaps are probably OK, but it's widespread amongst the savvy that
electronics are a sucker's seller game on eBay.

Easy to claim. Hell of a lot harder to actually substantiate that claim.

I suspect part of the problem is that the textbook publishers do
frequent updates and the college/university and/or the professors go along
with that - so a 2-year-old version is supposedly obsolete, even if the subject
matter has had only minor or even outright negligible updating in the past
2 years.

Sometimes the college/university switches textbook requirements to a
recent new author, sometimes one of their own!
In my college years, the class a year or two after mine in my major had
to buy a different author textbook than I had to buy for some earlier
undergraduate math requirements, with the newer version written by one of
that university's own math professors and mine written by someone else.
And in my personal opinion, I found the older version much better written
than the newer version.

I want to make sure that everyone here knows that the cardboard-in-a-
bun story that was so popular a few weeks ago was totally fabricated.
The Chinese authorities are now holding a reporter who made the whole
story up "to increase circulation" at the paper.

Personally, I was quite insistent that the story was true, and I'd
like to apologize right here and now for my little part in pushing
that story forward. I'm going to correct my statements on my personal
blog, as well.

It seems that China has some lessons to learn about the daily news,
though. It would be hard to trust what you read in that kind of
environment. You have a Communist government limiting your exposure to
certain stories on one hand, and on the other, you have unscrupulous
reporters who will print anything they want in order to sell a few
more copies.

It really is the wild west over there.

That's true. Unless you really want/need the convenience of a cell phone
or will want it to make US calls in the US, you can most likely find far
better deals on international calling by shopping around for the right
calling card. Down side, of course, is locating a phone to use with the
calling card.

Ya, I'd like to see more of what some other mainstream folks have to say
about this . . .
I dunno about that technicality -- the case went to the jury for their
decision, and whatever this was all about, they found for him, 12-0.

One other aspect of this conflict that intrigues me, is how the gov't
officials never directly address the question, "Where does it say that we
have to pay income tax?" Seems to me that's a fairly simple question.

I dunno . . . guess we'll see how this all plays out . . .

Line 76 of the 1040 form is where it says you have to pay income tax.

Do not call 800-693-0340 and ask for their address.
When you call do not push "0" as that expedites the contact to a live
person to less than a minute.
Especially do not call repeatedly from a pay phone ant that dings
them for 49 cent per call.

My understanding is that somebody at the bank is required to fill
out a form, and then it is just kept on file there. That is in
case there is a subsequent investigation. It only gets sent in
to the gubmint if there are reasons to for suspicion beyond the
amount.

If you withdraw lots of cash because you buy expensive business
equipment or cars at auctions, that is OK. Or if you deposit
lots of cash because you own a supermarket, that is also OK.

But, if you do it frequently (especially depositing), and don't
seem to have a good excuse, the bank will be more likely to
actually send in the report. Or if your pattern changes. Or if
it is a business account which employee or company officer might
be misusing.

It is called, "structuring." Although it is a bit of a grey area
as to how much separation you are supposed to have between
transactions, in order to avoid the accusation.

I've run across an amazing little synchronicity that stunned me the
first time it happened.

Download a midi file of Maple Leaf Rag, and one of the Entertainer.
(both Scott Joplin rags)

Then go to CNN.com and hope for the little flash animation loop of the
dancing alien in a mortgage ad.

Start one of the two midi files playing, and the damn little thing
dances in PERFECT synch with the music.

When I first ran across this, I happened to be playing the Maple Leaf
Rag when I went to the CNN site, and I was totally wierded out because
I thought the animation was picking up cues from the midi file I
happened to be playing.
