Mull this over. What would happen if--legal or not--everyone suddenly quit
paying income tax?

If they can find 12 people who thought OJ didn't kill anyone, then
you can find groups of people who will take any side of any issue
you can come up with, making seemingly logical arguments, yet ones
that are mutually exclusive and contradictive.

Personally I don't have a dog in this fight, so I haven't bothered to watch.
A casual google indicates that the issue revolves around claims that
the 16th Amendment wasn't properly ratified and so isn't part of the
Constitution.

Even if true, I bet there's lots of things in the past that weren't done
precisely right. What other wrongs should we take up and how far back
in history do you want to go?

As I understand it, there's also an issue that the income tax was only
intended for unearned income, to landlords, stockholders, and so on.

Since Congress both makes the tax laws and funds the IRS to administer
them, it seems to me, if the laws were not being administered as intended,
they could quickly correct it.

In many schools, that practice is banned. I work at a large university
and unless the instructor can show a compelling reason to use his or her
own book, it won't happen because its perceived as a conflict of
interest. The professor can use a book in development in a class he or
she teaches as handouts or in manuscript form or if no other comparable
book is available, but that's it.

Really? Several years ago, a colleague at work bought a heavy duty HP
laser printer for the office off eBay for $800. The printer was used,
but sold as such, and a new one would have cost my department $4,000 at
the time, which was money we didn't have in our budget. That printer was
used heavily for a few years before it finally crapped out.

We really got our use out of it. I did jam several times, but our
hardware maintenance contractor was only too happy to put it under our
annual service contract for a few dollars a month, so we were able to
get a lot of use out of it before it got so bad that they printer repair
guy was fixing it more than it worked. We used it daily for around three
years before we replaced it with a new printer.

No, a Lexmark printer, even if bought new, will always be a piece of

I don't know -- we had pretty good luck with this one at my last job:

http://www.lexmark.com/lexmark/product/home/423/0,6970,204816596_653293775_243391911_en,00.html

It printed really fast, it could do duplexing, hole punching, 11x17 paper,
it had a huge paper capacity (thousands of sheets), and a really huge output
capacity with multiple output trays. It wasn't perfect, but overall it was
pretty good.

I recently got $5K or so from a CitiBank in Miami Beach - and a lot of it was

Anyone ever rented and used a backhoe or bulldozer? I have some land
that I need to level and grade, and the price I was quoted was about
three times what I had expected. Looks like I could rent a dozer for
a week and pay only about 1/6th the cost of having the work done.

I've rented backhoes and Bobcats. Around here they go for $150-250
per day (small discount for weekly rental), depending on the actual
machine. Delivery is extra. Bulldozer rentals are available, but
less common here.

Have you ever operated this type of equipment? It could take some
time to get the hang of it -- it's not as easy as some of the pros
make it look (especially grading). I used to do excavation work 30
years ago as a summer job during college. It takes me a while to "get
back in the saddle" each time I decide to play in the dirt. It is
kind of fun, though. Big boys with big toys, and all...

I used a road grader, literally, when doing the dirt initially.

I was a bit sceptical when the operation that provided it
said it was the right tool for the job, but they were right.

Set the timing to match the fuel and you can run regular no problem. If it
pings when you have your foot at full throttle, back off a bit.

On a 69 Ford you will have no problem with unleaded, after all it has been
running on unleaded for almost 30 years.

Don't waste your money. Unless you have some super high compression Ferrari
or something, don't even bother with "premium" gas. Also do not get
confused by the octane rating. If you look at the little yellow stickers on
the pump, it says R+M/2. The R is the research octane, and that is the
higher number, and the M is the method octane number.

In the old days, the research octane number was used as an advertising ploy
to depict the gasoline as something more than it was. A higher octane does
not translate to more energy to move your truck down the road. If your
truck pings under moderate acceleration, the timing needs to be retarded a
bit and it will run just fine.

They were my mom's accounts and she'd had them for many years. One was a
money market account and the other was an interest checking account.
Originally I ordered checks for both accounts. The accounts we closed had
been earning lousy interest for quite a while, but that was the last straw.

Doesn't matter. Nobody twisted their arm or made them an offer they
couldn't refuse. If they offer a service they can't do it cheesily just
because you don't pay for other services. Well, yeah, I guess they can...

I was told that cash was essential. It turns out that that person was an
idiot and that a cashier's check WOULD have been acceptable. Unfortunately,
there is very little punishment for authoritarian stupidity.

I had to count out $30K in hundreds 4 times. Not fun at all.

Damn, you really remember things, don't you? Actually, looking back at
pictures of me taken around that time, I really wasn't all that bad-looking!

You look great! Nature compensates both ways, in time, none
of us can see worth a damn!

We're still with WAMU and not had much trouble, but the
branch manager has been there at least 20 years, back in the
Savings of America days. The guy is amazing, the word "no"
is not in his vocabulary.

It's a curse. Tons of useless trivia floating around, but I can't
remember the important stuff.

Embarassing doesn't necessarily mean bad-looking. ;-)

So true.

I've bought stuff from ebay and half.com and from the private resellers
through Amazon. No problems so far, but nothing over $100 either.

I gave them a CC number, but there's no way I want anybody
depositing/withdrawing from my checking account except me.

Probably happens more often when the instructors require the latest edition
(a new one every year) of their own books.

College text books have a huge captive market.

And don't forget: algebra and calculus change a lot from year to year,
so they definitely need to release new editions of books to keep them
"up to date".

Ken,

I recently had my lexmark x75 carts refilled at walgreens and thay
work great! I had to wait until the next day because I came in late in
the day (after 9pm). As a result of this experience, at recent
community garage sale event I saw another x75 and bought it ($5)
thinking that at most I'll have to invest another $25 ($10 black and
$15 for color) and then have what amounts to a brand new printer.

I've done some more digging around, and it looks like there might actually
be something to all this anti-income tax business. This link is to a
video (almost 2 hours long) that I found quite curious.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...80303867390173

But then, I found this site:
http://evans-legal.com/dan/tpfaq.html#income
which seems to answer many of the issues raised by the video. But then, I'm
no lawyer, so maybe it does, maybe it doesn't . . . I dunno . . .

What do y'all think about this? I can't tell if the anti-tax guys are
crackpots or not, or if the IRS is the Great Satan.
