Let me ask you: DO YOU TAKE THE LANE? Are you comfortable squeezing in
with a car in the same lane?

Once upon a time I thought bike lanes --well laid out the bike lanes--
could be the solution, but then I saw them popping up all over the
place WITHOUT CONNECTION, and realized they were counting miles, not
convenience or safety. They start in one place and disappear when you
least expect it. That's a mystery worth investigating. ;)

But the SUV opened the last frontier, and we are almost coexisting
with the alligators of the Everglades. Here the great expansion
occurred in the last 30 years. Actually we are taking over the
agricultural land as most produce comes from abroad.

Trying to bring European cycling to America is like bringing an
European car to America... And yet some people insist on the very
best.

What a waste of car!

Well, you seem to agree with me. We may be different, and maybe better
by leaving the 3 spd Dutch bike home, and taking off in an aggressive
road bike, not long haul or "pro," just medium distance, say under 10
miles (that's 20 miles R/T).

Of course, we need SPACE. A bicycle needs space to be safe, even
taking into account that someone falls into traffic. A bike lane
barely cuts it, but it doesn't go everywhere. Notice there's no pure
system even in Paris where they started the program. Some people --
kids, families-- bike paths, not mixed paths like we find around here.
The latter adds aggravation and danger to other users.

So we need to TAKE THE LANE if bicycling is ever to take off.

I admit that our organizations are caught up in conflicts and
contradictions. Even the Florida Bicycle Association banned me a long
time ago because my comments could hurt those associated with the
Republican Party. Imagine, the party that wastes a fortune in war,
trying to bring nation building to America. ;)

Notice that my taming of the beast takes more than creating space for
bicycles, and deals with TAMING TRAFFIC, EASING OUR WAR ON DRUGS, etc,
which in turn could free funds for bike facilities.

You probably agree with me that "we have the best laws money can buy."
Traffic tickets are a milking cow and so are "accidents" and DUI's.
What can we do?

There's a good bit on the web on hoop greenhouses. PVC is cheap and the
shape is very strong. Whatever you cover it with can be cheap and
disposable, perhaps one of those "heavy duty" silver tarps:

"What that said to me was that there is a kid culture and a media

read during the summer, but given the opportunity to select their own
books and discuss what they knew about, 'The Rock' or Hannah Montana
or Junie B. Jones was, in itself, motivating to them."

Ellen Galinsky, president of the Families and Work Institute and
author of a new book about how children learn, "Mind in the Making,"
said she hoped that the findings would encourage parents and teachers
to allow children to select their own reading material.

"A child's interests are a door into the room of reading," said Ms.
Galinsky, who said her own son turned away from books during grade
school. Because he liked music, she encouraged him to read music
magazines or books about musicians. Her son later regained an interest
in reading and has a Ph.D.

"If your child is turned off by reading, getting them to read anything
is better than nothing," she said.

But giving children a choice in the books they read is a message many
parents resist.

At a bookstore recently, Dr. McGill-Franzen said she witnessed an
exchange between some mothers encouraging their fifth- and sixth-grade
daughters to read biographies of historical figures, when the girls
wanted to select books about Hannah Montana, a character played by the
pop star Miley Cyrus.

"If those books get them into reading, that has great repercussions
for making them smarter," Dr. McGill-Franzen said. "Teachers and
middle-class parents undervalue kids' preferences, but I think we need
to give up being so uptight about children's choices in books."

Call it a hunch, but I suspect that one reason the parents you see in
BOOKSTORES are so resistant to let kids pick and choose what to read
is the high cost of new books! (I buy maybe one brand-new book per
year - and that's usually for someone else.) If parents relied more on
libraries, thrift stores and free book exchanges (often at the local
recycling center), chances are there'd be fewer power struggles and
more focus on slowly cultivating an EVOLVING love of reading.

Mine favored wrapping a wet paper towel loosely in aluminum foil and
placing it in the BS container. Works for raisins, too. The clear

Interesting, very interesting stuff... Riding a bicycle in Afghanistan
sounds like a crazy idea and an American commander wants more of it!
We have bikes in America though. Lots of it, tons of it, but NO PLACE
TO RIDE THEM! Such is the irony of life in the jungle. But "public
affairs" sounds PR, and such is the importance of propaganda in a war.

some to orphans, some to NGOs, some to the Afghan Cycling Federation.

But 50 bikes and the spare parts and tools needed to build them and
keep them running weigh about two tons, I said. Kind of hard to get
over the Khyber.

We'll fly them in on a transport plane, he said.

But Afghanistan is dangerous, I said.

It's not bad in Kabul, he said. You'll stay on a military compound,
and we'll give you body armor and a helmet.

Great. Body armor. I feel safer already.

That was two months ago. Today, I'm sitting in the lobby of the
Brussels Airport Sheraton, drinking coffee and waiting for our team to
assemble, Ocean's Eleven-style. I have my mechanic, my fixer, my video
guy. I have the mightiest army known to history protecting me.

I don't know, but I know that...

It takes two to tango. I think it can work quite well with mandating
the cars to exit the lane whenever possible and mandating the cyclists
to wear something bright to have full protection.

Notice I'm NOT for mandating helmets or obeying every traffic signal
out there.

Sorry, it's standard jargon in the trade. But not to worry, WE'LL GIVE
IT BACK.

Two or more lanes can accommodate car and bicycle on different lanes.
50' before and after amounts to 100' or 1/3 of a block which would
allow smooth flow of traffic and peace of mind for the cyclists. You
may even have time to jump when you see a vehicle 10' behind you. ;)

I took this virtual trip to Paris (faster than Concorde) and this is

Once at a racing meet, a spectator asked the owner of a Ferrari how
much the car cost. When informed, the spectator said, "But you could
buy a house for that!" To which the owner said, "Well, you can't take
a house to work, but you can always sleep in the car.."

man returns, pays the three grand and the $72.48 in interest, and asks
for his keys. "But..how?", asks the loan officer. The man replies,
"Well you see, I'm the owner of the Ferrari dealership here in the
City, and I had to go to Los Angeles on buisiness." "I still don't
understand", the banker said. "Why didn't you just garage it
somewhere?" The Ferrari dealer replied, "Where the hell could I park
for two weeks in New York for seventy-five bucks?"

A horse and a chicken are playing in a meadow. The horse falls into a mud
hole and is sinking. He calls to the chicken to go and get the farmer to
help pull him out to safety. The chicken runs to the farm but the farmer
can't be found.

So he drives the farmer's BMW back to the mud hole and ties some rope
around the bumper. He then throws the other end of the rope to his friend,
the horse, and drives the car forward saving him from sinking!

A few days later, the chicken and horse were playing in the meadow again
and the chicken fell into the mud hole. The chicken yelled to the horse to
go and get some help from the farmer.

The horse said, "I think I can stand over the hole!" So he stretched over
the width of the hole and said, "Grab for my penis and pull yourself up."
And the chicken did and pulled himself to safety.

THE MORAL: If you're hung like a horse, you don't need a BMW to pick up

This makes no sense to me. If he owns a Ferrari dealership, wouldn't he
have a showroom or somewhere he could leave the car for 3 days?

Our curse could be our blessing. The sprawl that killed our
communities may be an opportunity for a different kind of bicycling
than Europe: FAST BIKING. Our streets are better and wider, so IF WE
GET A TRAFFIC LANE we really could go places far and away.

Not all people like this type of cycling though. I go as far as a road
bike with flat bar. I got one. I also own local cruisers, choppers and
foldables. Sidewalk cycling should be banned, period.

We may break away from our dependency in the car and public
transportation, which more often than not sucks. I mean they should
invest money into it, but it ain't happening.

I have a campaign also that puts together two important issues: BIKE
LOCALLY, BUY LOCALLY. That should be the bottom line, but the sky is
the limit.

We are just waiting for a signal from above. Or is it coming from the
bottom?
