Finally, a definitive answer: Ting is NOT providing the free service.

Somehow, my comment disappeared the first try.

There is probably an arbitration agreement in the contract anyway.

T-Mobile no longer offers the $10/year minimum prepaid account, although
existing ones were grandfathered in. I live in fear...

Nobody seems to offer a chunk of voice/data which is good until used up,
at which time you buy another chunk.

To the best of my knowledge there was no contract. Probably a TOS. I
know it's probably dead in the water, but I had hopes. It was really
useful for people who only needed to use it once a year :-(

Let's see... We used it to find cheap gas stations between Pasadena and
Houston 3 years ago. I used to find the ACTUAL address of a business
whose street had an ambiguous name maybe a year ago. Uh... I don't
think we were much of a drain on their resources, but we were certainly
unlikely to upgrade our account.

If you want my opinion, admitting that I know little about freedompop except
that they look like crooks, you are basically fucked with your FREE services
with them.

There are no free services with Ting, if you want to pay them, you can
continue to use your devices. Otherwise, no pay, no play.

Freedompop obviously doesn't want you freeloaders anymore.

I'm pretty sure if you start paying them for service, you can stay.

It looks like people with the CDMA devices are moved to Ting, the GSM people
are moved to something called Red Pocket.

Although it seems they still offer the "free" service as a plan, only thing
I can think of is that it's device dependent.

I know that somewhere in the near future it's going to be LTE and Voice Over
LTE only. Verizon is going VoLTE only by the end of this year and I think
Sprint is shooting for the end of 2020.

Hi Bev, this is Miguel from FreedomPop. I'm sorry to hear you haven't found what you're looking for with Ting! Keep in mind, only CDMA (Sprint) accounts were transferred to Ting. So if you have a GSM SIM or hotspot, then your account has remained as is on FreedomPop with no action required on your end.

If you're unsure, reach a representative at forums.freedompop.com or on twitter @freedompophelp. If you're a VIP subscriber, you can also reach us through freedompop.com/contact.

Then why has my Franklin R850 hotspot stopped working? Why does there
seem to be no record of the free voice/msg/data SIM associated with a
different email account?

So you're saying that the FREE freedompop accounts are continuing with
freedompop and should continue to work?

Can't help you with that, but if you're looking for a low cost carrier,
I suggest taking a look at Mint Mobile. They are a T-Mobile MVNO, so it
depends on coverage where you are. They have unlimited voice/text and
3GB of data for $15 a month if you pay for a year at a time. If you
pay for 3 months at a time, it's $23. A year with 13GB of data per month
is $25 a month. After you exceed the data, it just slows. I've had it
for a year and a half, very happy. Have a friend here who's using it and
happy too and he got his parents in LA on it and they are happy too.
If you're interested, give me a heads
up here, they have a referral deal going on where we can both get some $$,
$30 I think. I think they still have a $5 trial deal too, where they
send you a sim with 100 minutes on it, 100MB of data to try it out too.

Useful information for those who use more than 10 calls and a few
hundred MB/year! What I'd like is a wifi hotspot with a certain amount
of data I could use until it's gone, but I don't think anybody offers
that.

Still waiting for Ting's response...

Has anyone succeeded in getting their *free* SIM or hotspot transferred
to Ting? Ting seems to have ONLY paid accounts, unlike the totally-free
time that Freedompop offered. I've emailed Ting several times and
received a couple of useless replies, but no actual resolution.

Definitely a stupid article. For upholstered furniture you look at the
home it came from. For electronics, you assume it's bad (unless you
actually see it working) and offer an amount you're willing to throw
away if it doesn't work.

Baby gear isn't that hard to evaluate. If the $2 car seat is a recall
EXERCISE THE RECALL AND GET A BRAND NEW CAR SEAT. Use your own judgment
about helmets, but I fail to see how styrofoam with no visible defects
can NOT protect you. Remember, bicycle helmets are designed to protect
the head only from a simple drop from 6 feet PROVIDING it's being worn
properly. Most kids don't wear them properly, and neither do a lot of
adults.

Food: Again, look at the home it's coming from. Best food I ever
bought: genuine home-made Santa Rosa plum jam at an estate sale -- the
stupid heirs didn't know what they had.

I've ALWAYS bought cars from strangers, except the most recent one.
Only one was a dud, and I still got a lot of use out of it. If you
can't recognize a dangerous toy you should have your childbearing
license revoked. If you don't know enough about bicycles to know what
you're buying, go to Costco; the bike will probably need to be
adjusted, so buy a bike-repair book and learn something useful.. OTOH,
I've bought lots of good bicycles for $25 or under.

Most advice like this is aimed at dunces, so it's not entirely worthless.

Really funny. Just about all of them I have, I've gotten mine from
strangers. Rarely a problem, and I can usually fix that. In fact often I
get things free to fix and use them, like my 50" plasma TV that was free
dead, and has worked for years after I replaced $8 of capacitors. My car
was bought off Craigslist. My computers are entirely built from used parts.

The calculated "inflation" does not reflect the increased spending of
most retired people.

"Social Security recipients are losing ground financially, despite
receiving an annual cost-of-living (COLA) increase.

On Oct. 11, the Bureau of Labor Statistics will release inflation data
that determines how much more Social Security beneficiaries will receive
in 2019.

That adjustment is pegged, by law, to the cost-of-living increase for
households for whom half or more of their income comes from clerical
work or hourly wages. It not only excludes households of unemployed,
self-employed, part-time, professional and salaried workers, but also —
crucially for seniors — households with no one in the labor force, which
includes retirees."

"Social Security benefits have lost 34 percent of buying power since
2000, according to a study released earlier this year by The Senior
Citizens League. And in the past year alone, Social Security recipients
fell 4 percent behind the rise in their actual cost of living, according
to Johnson.

"The loss occurred even though beneficiaries received a 2-percent annual
cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2018," she explained.

The main culprit? Medical expenses.

More than half of the 1,057 respondents who participated in the annual
Senior Citizens League study reported that "their monthly expenses went
up by more than $79. Yet 50 percent of survey respondents said that
their COLA increased their benefits less than $5 per month, after the
increased [Medicare] Part B premium for 2018 was deducted from their
Social Security benefits," the study said."
