I am a nurse, and our hospital has been out of plastic wash basins for a
week now. The supervisor told me yesterday that the manufacturer has
stopped making them for now, due to the price of petroleum which is used in
the making of the plastic for the basins. So our patients suffer due to the
price of gas, and they're not even getting out of bed.

Nope, because that effect is quite small.

Even on the price of some of the more stupid consumer products like bottled water etc.

Nope, because that aint what determines whether you get the ones you need.

Depends entirely on how you define that. The modern reality is that
the kids that matter quality of education wise arent those who will
end up in the professions etc on the whole, those get a very adequate
education even when the teachers are nothing special, just because
the system has always handled those kids quite adequately.

The main problem is with the kids who dont see the point in getting
a decent education, and who dont have parents who have enough
of a clue to ensure that they are adequately educated so that they
do have a decent choice of jobs once they leave school. There are
bugger all teachers that do very well in that situation, and thats
primarily because of the way the education system is structured,
not because of the quality of the individual teacher involved.

And that isnt going to change regardless of what the teachers are paid
within the limits that are feasible given that all those kids need to be educated.

Probably depends on the individual. Since I always valued family and
personal time, my goal was to work 40 hours, and that's what I worked.
There were exceptions when something critical needed addressing, and
then there was no limit to hours worked. I usually got most of those
hours back with time off.
Of course when I was at work, I was actually working.
Long hours are usually pushed by bad management to squeeze workers.
One of the reasons unions were born in the first place.
Sometimes the worker feels inadequate and decides he has to work long
hours. Sometimes the worker actually *likes* working long hours.
I did that my first 5 or so years in IT, so as to learn enough to keep
up with peers, and pass them if possible. I suppose plenty of
teachers do this too. I hope so. Anyway, these are often personal
decisions.
A 45-50 hour work week as some kind of standard is just bullshit.

Administrators, such as principals and board of education members, are
very highly paid, and often of questionable value.
There is a lot of fat in education budgets.
That's where I would start to look for savings.
Then look hard at what teachers are demanding, and if it's
"unreasonable" take it to the public and start busting the union.
Yeah, I know. Easy to say.
But the public footing the bill usually keeps things on a somewhat
even keel.

I agree that teachers should be reasonably well paid, but I also think
that taxpayers should get good value for their money. That means
abolish the current practices of tenure and advancement based on
seniority and make it a meritocracy like you see in most successful
businesses (at least in lower levels).

convenient boogey man at the time, and it also suited him to claim
glory for it too. Win win for the US administration and Bin Laden!

He was holed up in some Afghan cave at the time ffs!

HAVE TO FOLLOW IT TO A LETTER FOR IT TO WORK!!!!
A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just like you
are now, and
came across an article similar to this that said you could make
thousands of dollars
within weeks with only an initial investment of $6.00! So I thought,"
Yeah, right, this
must be a scam", but like most of us, I was curious, so I kept
reading.

Anyway, it said that you send $1.00 to each of the 6 names and
address
stated in the
article. You then place your own name and address in the bottom of
the
list at #6, and
post the article in at least 200 newsgroups. (There are thousands) No
catch, that was
it. So after thinking it over, and talking to a few people first, I
thought about trying it.
I figured what have I got to lose except 6 stamps and $6.00, right?
Like most of us I
was a little skeptical and a little worried about the legal aspects
of
it
all. So I checked it out with the U.S. Post Office (1-800-725-2161)
and they
confirmed that it is indeed legal! Then I invested the measly $6.00.
Well GUESS
WHAT!!... within 7 days, I started getting money in the mail! I was
shocked! I figured
it would end soon, but the money just kept coming in. In my first
week, I made about
$25.00. By the end of the second week I had made a total of over
$1,000.00! In the
third week I had over $10,000.00 and it's still growing. This is now
my fourth week
and I have made a total of just over $42,000.00 and it's still coming
in rapidly. It's
certainly worth $6.00, and 6 stamps, I have spent more than that on
the lottery!!

Let me tell you how this works and most importantly, why it
works....also, make sure
you print a copy of this article NOW, so you can get the information
off of it as you
need it. STEP 1: Get 6 separate pieces of paper and write the
following on each piece
of paper "PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR MAILING LIST." Now get 6 US $1.00
bills
and place ONE inside EACH of the 6 pieces of paper so the bill will
not be seen
through the envelope to prevent thievery. Next, place one paper in
each of the 6

now here is the fun part, each of those 625 persons post a MINIMUM

letters with
my name at #2 and they each only receive 5 replies, that just made me
$3,125.00!!!
Those 3,125 persons will all deliver this message to 200 newsgroups
with my name at
#1 and if still 5 persons per 200 newsgroups react I will receive
$15,625,00! With a
original investment of only $6.00! AMAZING! When your name is no
longer on the
list, you just take the latest posting in the newsgroups, and send
out
another $6.00 to
names on the list, putting your name at number 6 again. And start
posting again. The
thing to remember is, do you realize that thousands of people all
over
the world are
joining the internet and reading these articles everyday, JUST LIKE
YOU are now!!

A new car is a big ticket item. So, expect to spend some time or
expect to pay little more.

I wouldn't suggest telling the dealer what you are willing to pay.
Here are the steps you need to take:

1) Decide which vehicle and what options you want. You have to
finalize this... otherwise, everything becomes hazy at the time of
purchase.
2) Do your own research (Edmunds) and determine the price.
3) If you know of anyone who has the same vehicle, ask to see the
receipt. If not, find a relevant newsgroup and request for the price
people have paid. Compare the price with Edmunds' and document the
lower price for the base and for each of the options.
4) Invite quotes from 4 or 5 dealers. Tell them exactly what you want
and emphasize that you don't want anything else unless they give it to
you for free.
5) Pick the dealer that gives you the lowest quote. If the total price
is less than your research, go ahead and buy. If not, ask if they can
beat your research amount.
6) Visit the dealer, but be prepared to leave empty handed. Decide in
the first 15 minutes whether the dealer looks like he'll honor the
quote or is he going to add more costs.

I personally would let go of $100 or so if that meant less haggling
and less heartache and resulting in time savings. You have to decide
how frugal you want to be.

After you make the purchase, don't go out of your way to find out if
you paid too much.

Wrong. Real wage slavery involves a hell of a lot more than just that.

Even just not being prepared to risk a significant change like
