This thread is starting to make me all nostalgic for the golden days
of this group. We even have a thread subject that harkens back to the
last century. Maybe we can get some more old timers to show up. Except
for Old_Timer who is probably dead by now.

That's the scam. The check bounces after the money is wired.

By breaking the slab up into small bits of concrete
and heating it with air from a solar air heater.

In practice its more practical to just use a room full of gravel instead.

> Or.... is it just best to forget abt using concrete as a storage mass

Yes.

> and use something like barrels of water, etc?

Water has some advantages, but using rooms full of gravel has
some too, particularly being able to heat the gravel with solar
air heaters which are much simpler than solar water heaters.

The solar air heaters we used were just black painted metal under
a transparent poly carbonate cover, with big radial air fans driving
the air, one per room full of gravel. The rooms full of gravel had a
strong metal grid under the room full of gravel so there was a decent
air chamber at the top and the bottom of the room full of gravel.

Thats a lot easier to make than a water based system.

Takes up a lot of space tho when its on the side of a house.

With the greenhouse, the rooms full of gravel were just part
of the whole greenhouse with a room for the computer controls
on the non sun side of the greenhouse, on the south side in our
case because it was in the southern hemisphere.

What numbers of dead? More died in single battles of WWI and WWII than have
perished in the entire Middle Eastern skirmishes. In fact, the scenario
reminds me of how the US Army cleared the West of Indians in the 19th
century.

It is liberal hypocrisy to bemoan the fallen and the dead. They could care
less about that. What liberals care about is ensuring the decline of the
West to the advantage of third world rabble. No one illustrates this better
than Obama. He should have stayed in Indonesia. He would be happy there with
his own kind.

You cannot take insult. Your reaction to Ed Gin and to me prove that over

Anyone out here can go back through various threads to find long
replies of yours that are unique (read NOT copy and paste) and those
take more than a few seconds. Saying something is so doesn't make it
so regardless of the person happening to say it and that most
certainly apples to you.

AND your plan is working??? If you think that TM cares what you think
or what you do, you are a fool. He probably revels in the notion that
you stalk him and respond even when your reply is only copy and
paste. TM has your number and is playing you.whether you recognize
that or not.

I have some old audio amps and speakers and I'd like to put them back
online.

What I would like is a tuner preamp combo that would have a remote so
that I can set each room's volume independently. I'd also like to change
sources and stations remotely.

Where to look for something reasonable? There must be something that
is not high dollar.

Go to garage sales and buy tuners to go with them. No remote, but they
tend to be cheap, like five dollars. One could even buy up portable
cassette players with radios intended for headphones or just small radios
intended for headphones. I bought one of the latter for five dollars a
few months ago. Some portable CD players also include am/fm tuners,
though maybe not enough to make them easy to find; portable CD players are
$3.00 items at garage sales now, nobody wants them since they have to
carry a bunch of CDs around.

For that matter, many MP3 players have FM tuners built in, and enough time
has passed, and enough change has happened, that the earliest are now
obsolete due to too little memory space, so they may start appearing at
garage sales.

No remotes, but when you can cheaply add a radio function to existing
amplifiers, one doesn't have to have a central tuner for the project.

Well, I did a Google search of "IR Remote Extender" (also "IR
Remote repeater") and found Several hits for devices and
DIY plans for devices that will take a IR remote signal and
send it to another room. So that part can be done pretty
easily. The rest comes down to running the audio from the
central receiver to the remote amps. That can be done by
stringing audio cables.

FWIW: I did this in a house I owned about 20 years ago. I
had full access to the basement and attic so stringing
audio cables was not a problem. I used a bunch of amps that
i picked up on the surplus market. They had a three input
selector. So I ran two audio busses throughtout the house
and wired the amps so they could select either of the
busses, or a local input.

Yard sale computers w/wireless network cards, competent sound
cards and a cheap wireless router. Wireless mouses make wonderful
"remote"s. The computers don't have to be particularly powerful but
you'll want good-sized drives to hold the music. You'll need a
broadband connection for streaming programming but there is a whole
raft of free software that will allow you to rip and listen to your
cds and lps. There also exists quite a universe of stolen and
legitimate music for downloading across the WWW, P2P networks or even
with competent newsreading software.

Metal Flakes Found In Lollipops
By Ben Popken on October 22, 2010 12:00 PM 0 views

Better check your kids bags for Colombina Mega Pops this Halloween. A
test of the lollipops found tiny metal flakes in them. Family Dollar
has recalled the pops, which were also sold at a few other discount
stores, and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer
Services has issued a warning.

The lollipops came in 28-oz bags with lot number 120979601171 or
ELPACK #2 on them. The bags say "MEGA POPS" on the front and
"Colombina" in the upper left hand corner.

The Department is investigating how widely distributed the pops were
and is sharing information with the FDA.

Consumers are recommended to throw the candy away or return it to the
store for a refund.

Honda Recalls Nearly 500K Cars Over Brake Problems
By Chris Morran on October 22, 2010 3:19 PM 0 views

Remember yesterday when Toyota recalled 1.53 million cars over
concerns about leaking brake fluid? Apparently the problem is
contagious, with Honda issuing a recall of their own on 470,000 Acura
and Honda vehicles.

A rep for the car company told the Detroit News that the recall covers
some 2005-07 Acura RL and 2005-07 Honda Odyssey vehicles.

The issue in both the Toyota and Honda recalls involves a part
manufactured by the same company, identified as Advics.

Apparently, if customers use brake fluid other than the original type,
the seal on the master cylinder can fail, diminishing the car's
stopping power.

Explains a rep for the company to Consumer Reports:

"
If a manual brake bleed is performed, with full and rapid stroke
of the brake pedal, the seal can become twisted within its retention
groove. Once that has occurred, a twisted seal can leak a small amount
of brake fluid with each application of the pedal.
"

Honda will replace the brake master cylinder seal in all recalled
vehicles. If leaking occurred, it also will replace the brake booster.

The Honda rep says that drivers will know if a leak is happening
because it "will result in the brake fluid light illuminating before
there is any loss of brake system performance. Although one brake
circuit could gradually lose performance due to this cause, there
would be no effect on the other brake circuit."

If the warning light does come on, take your vehicle to the dealer for
repair ASAP.

Owners may contact Honda customer service at: 800-999-1009.
