That is indeed what happens in real life.

Exactly. As long as drivers are as on-the-ball wrt
watching out for cross traffic as cyclists are.

Drivers' speeds don't really affect cyclists as much
as people would like to think. Yes, they do have an
effect, but we can deal with it.

It seems to me that drivers tend to view cyclists as
"the enemy" more than vice verso. In this very subthread,
cyclists are accused of "bullying" drivers. Go figure.
We and our 20-pound machines are out to make life miserable
for people in their 3-ton, rolling, climate-controlled
living rooms. Yeah, right.

This is just Usenet. In real life, people are slightly more
adept at getting along with each other.

I'm quite prepared to get along nicely with reasonable,
sociable people -- even on the streets & roads.

And I'm certainly no bully. Not many riders are.

Many more drivers are.

Tom

We don't do that, and every reasonable, rational person
knows that it's a red herring to suggest we do so.

This bullshit about cylcists making life hard for drivers
is just too much!

Unless by "playing Chicken" you mean we have a presence
on the streets that compels your twisted psychology to
maliciously aim at us.

Yes, please (I'm asking you nicely.)

What's with all the question marks?

How about if so many anti-bicycle drivers took their
stoopid & ignorant prejudices, and shoved 'em where
the moon don't shine?

You use question marks too much.

I LOVE rice and beans, but I guess it would have to be brown rice to
be nutritious.

Nope. I don't see the case in preparing for WWIII.

I think we should work toward prevent it though.

You bet I'm not a Conservative, but I see a sort of Libertarian model
fitting for America... the Swiss (and they even have universal
healthcare and tough environmental policies for those on the left)...

DIFFERENT CULTURES, DIFFERENT SOLUTIONS. The apparent contradiction
between "no king of the jungle" and Scandinavia, where they have
royalty, is easy to explain: Their lion have been tamed, or better
said, he was smart enough to tame himself (though still there in
international affairs). It ranks #1 in standard of living, but that is
due to having the lowest corruption in the world AND having high
taxes, something unlikely to be desired by many... But other systems
are available: First, the decentralized Swiss system* has a lower
taxation rate and introduces a very democratic principle among
competitive cantons and communes: VOTE WITH YOUR FEET; second, the
successful cooperatives that exist in places like Israel, the Basque
Country and Denmark. Coops are the ideal in that there's no lion in
them. They can reach the 'good life' even without money.

*The Swiss model is an alternative for those who hate the word
"socialism" in any form and it's cited by the Libertarians.

Frank, you are not very smart, or you are just playing dumb. I'm
saying IT'S A JUNGLE OUT THERE because I propose to fix it. That's why
I speak about "the revolution" and coming out of the jungle. You, on
the other hand, want to deny something so obvious that you look either
out of touch with reality or have an agenda in mind, and offer no hope
other than rider training or mental toughness. How about the stupid
drivers and the stupid traffic laws out there? Haven't you noticed the
few cyclists that dare commute to work in America (a pitiful .4% of
the total commuting population) mostly ride on the sidewalks? So *YOU*
are the one defending the status quo, one where GM and Exxon thrive,
one where size matters, and rats run for their lives...

The Art of Urban Cycling: Lessons from the Street

"The bicyclist is under attack from all directions - the streets are
ragged, the air is poison, and the drivers are angry. As if that
weren't enough, the urban cyclist must carry the weight of history
along on every ride.
After a brief heyday at the turn of the twentieth century, American
cyclists fell out of the social consciousness, becoming an
afterthought when our cities were planned and built. Cyclists today
are left to navigate, like rats in a sewer, through a hard and
unsympathetic world that was not made for them. Yet, with the proper
attitude and a bit of knowledge, urban cyclists can thrive in this
hostile environment."

http://www.amazon.com/Art-Urban-Cycling-Lessons-Street/dp/0762727837/ref=pd_sim_b_title_1/104-6001352-1213502

And we need to fix the sewer...

SCHOEPS about About us Success through Devotion to Detail - Schoeps'
History - Dr. Schoeps, the founder of the company and former business
manager Dr. Küsters, Dr. Schoeps' first employee, a remarkable
technician In 1998, Schoeps looked back over half a century of
designing, developing and marketing condenser microphones. The name
Schoeps is recognized throughout the world for products of outstanding
quality, whose simple elegance and devotion to detail offer practical
solutions to a broad range of recording situations. Today, Schoeps
specializes in t http://www.chinese-microphone.com/OEM-MIC.html he
manufacture of condenser microphones of the highest quality with their
supporting accessories. But, as with its product line, the company
itself took time to develop and define its purpose. In the post-war
period, business life in Germany was largely concerned with rebuilding
the devastated economy and securing a living for employer and employee
alike. In June of 1948, Schalltechnik was founded by Dr.-Ing. Karl
Schoeps (born in 1906). His first employee was Dr.-Ing. Wilhelm
Küsters (born in 1910). Both were graduates in Communications
Engineering at the University of Karlsruhe. The company logo, which
dates from that era, symbolizes the shared interest that brought both
men together: sound waves (the "Schall" of "Schalltechnik")
superimposed on the big "T" for "Technik" (technology). The similarity
of this logo to that of a pre-existing company called Tungsram made it
necessary to modify it at the end of the 1950's into today's form with
the bevelled upper corners of the "T." In the early days, while Dr.
Schoeps was the director and business manager of the company, Dr.
Küsters was mainly responsible for technology and manufacturing.
As his health deteriorated, however, Dr. Küsters began to look
for someone to assist him. He was fortunate in finding Jörg
Wuttke, who joined the company in 1970. Wuttke had studied with and
assisted the inventor of the interference tube "shotgun" microphone,
Professor Kurtze, who taught at the University in Karlsruhe. Jörg
Wuttke had hoped to gather some practical experience and then obtain a
doctorate afterwards, but matters turned out differently. At the end
of 1971, Dr. Küsters died, and Jörg Wuttke took on his job.
He and his colleagues launched the well-known Colette series in 1973.
In 1978 the GmbH was founded. In 1980, the son of Dr. Schoeps, Ulrich
Schoeps, joined his father's company. Employees and customers took
this as a hopeful sign that the company would remain family owned in
the future. Dr. Schoeps was then already 74, and people began
wondering who would replace him when he retired. At first, Ulrich
Schoeps worked mainly in the administrative and legal sector. Then, in
1986, he became second director, with his father remainin

g first director. At the end of 1993, Dr. Schoeps, who was still
coming in to the company every day, died, whereupon his son became
head of the firm. In 1997 Jörg Wuttke became the second
shareholder in the GmbH, joining Ulrich Schoeps. A collection of

was housed in private apartments, but before long it moved to a rented
house in Durlach, the oldest district of Karlsruhe. The company's
residence is one of the oldest houses preserved in Durlach; its cellar
and foundation walls date back to 1662. The firm bought it together
with an adjacent building, in 1965, doubling the available floor
space. In the succeeding years, as the company continued to grow, a
former ballroom on the premises was rebuilt

http://www.chinese-microphone.com/OEM-MIC.html
into a production facility for mechanical parts, first used in 1990.
The company is still located in the mentioned buildings to this day.
The name "Schalltechnik Dr.-Ing. Schoeps," which is rather unusual for
a microphone manufacturer, stems from the fact that in the beginning
the company dealt with sound recording and reinforcement systems. In
the days before television, people often found entertainment at the
cinema. As the film industry flourished, Schoeps engineered sound
systems for use in motion-picture theaters, and even manufactured one
tape recorder model for a short time. Concurrently, the first Schoeps
condenser microphone was built - the CMV 50/2, using two of the
legendary RV 12P 2000 tubes. Its capsule and microphone body were then
still rigidly connected to each other, with a length of 320 mm and a
diameter of 80 mm, dwarfing today's Schoeps microphones. In the first
twenty years of its history, Schoeps had practically no distribution
network of its own. Nevertheless, its circle of customers steadily
increased. Thanks to the friendship between Dr. Schoeps and a French
businessman, who had very good contacts at radio stations, Schoeps
gained a strong market position in this sector during the 1950's which
it has managed to preserve to the present day. As a result, more than
half of Schoeps' production was exported to France. By now, Schoeps
products already showed what would become one of their distinguishing
features: the small size of the microphones (though this could not yet
be called miniaturization). In 1955, the highly regarded M 221 B tube
microphone came out. Today the M 221 B has found a worthy successor:
in 1996 the M 222 came out in response to the general renaissance of
interest in tube technology. Both epitomize the smallest types of tube
microphones. In the years that followed, Schoeps developed contacts in
German radio and television stations, making the name Schoeps well
known in Germany. It wasn't easy, however, to compete with the large-
diaphragm microphones of other companies whose products were already
well established in the radio stations. Rather than compete at a lower
price, Schoeps sought to convince new customers of the specific
advantages of the respected Schoeps designs. Schoeps microphones also
began to be distributed as OEM products by Philips, Telefunken and
Siemens, with Telefunken advertising Schoeps products in magazines.
This brought Schoeps world wide recognition as early as the 1950's and
1960's. The SCHOEPS CM 51/9 was distributed as an OEM product by
Telefunken and Siemens. At the beginning of the 1960's Schoeps, along
with many other companies, made the transition to transistor
technology. The CMT 20, launched in 1964, was a milestone for the
company as its first transistorized phantom-powered condenser
microphone. At that time, the affordable and low-noise FETs found
today as impedance converters in the input stages of nearly every
condenser microphone were not yet on the market. Thus noise reduction
was achieved by modulating an RF carrier. In addition to its circuit
design its switchable three-pattern transducer was a special feature
of the CMT 20

. It worked according to the push-pull principle, with a single
diaphragm mounted between two back electrodes. The output stage of
this microphone had no transformer. Later it was built without
coupling capacitors as CMT 200. This circuit topology is found in
Schoeps microphones up to the present day. Schoeps introduced the very
first mechanically switchable three-pattern capsule, the MKT 26, as
early as 1961. In contrast to the common electrically-coupled double
diaphragm design, a patented, mechanically switchable transducer with
only one diaphragm was used. This offered the exceptional low-
frequency response of a real pressure transducer in the "omni"
position. In 1969, a stereo condenser microphone, the CMTS 501, was
launched with two switchable three-pattern single-diaphragm capsules.
Meanwhile, in 1965, the metal diaphragms were replaced by the more
reliable, gold sputtered Mylar membranes. This material was selected
only after an extensive series of experiments led to the pre-ageing
process that gives the diaphragm its long term stability, a
manufacturing technique still used by Schoeps. In 1973, the Colette
series was launched, the most extensive and versatile microphone
system ever conceived. The "active Colette tubes" a
http://www.chinese-microphone.com/OEM-MIC.html re familiar to the
millions who have seen the Three Tenors or "Les Miz" on TV; they are
also used by the German Parliament. The "active cable" is widely used
(but not seen!) in "stashed" (hidden) microphone rigs by film and TV
recordists, in stage sets, and in concert halls and opera houses. This
is possible because the microphone amplifier can be separated from the
capsule. making the visible part of the microphone substantially
smaller. Today, this "modular microphone system" has been widely
imitated, but Schoeps continues to offer the widest selection of
transducers and accessories. That same year the MK 6 Colette capsule
was developed out of the MKT 26. A year later it was followed by the
MK 5, a switchable two-pattern capsule (omni/cardioid) with improved
high-frequency response. Both are still in the catalog. Starting in
1974, the Colette series was made available on an OEM basis to Studer,
who were hoping to expand their product range. They renamed the CMC
microphone amplifiers "SKM" (for Studer Kondensator Mikrofone). By
this time Schoeps had begun to exhibit at conventions of the AES and
VDT, which were then quite small. The capsule range of the SCHOEPS
Colette series. In 1976 Schoeps launched the MSTC 54 "ORTF Stereo"
microphone, embodying one of the most effective simple stereo
techniques ever devised. It is still in general use, and is especially
popular in its country of origin, France. Finally, in 1977, Schoeps
placed their first advertisements. They showed the Colette series in
advertisements that were published three times a year in the Funkschau
- then a magazine for radio and television technology. In the
meantime, the boundary-layer plate BLM 3 came on the market, and soon
won in a comparison test with similar units. Two years later, in 1985,
it was produced in miniaturized form as an active boundary-layer
capsule. In 1990, Schoeps caused a stir with its implementation of the
sphere microphone invented by Dr. Theile. This first sphere microphone
was designated the KFM 6U. In 1994, along with the miniaturization
already made possible by the active Colette cables and tubes, a new
miniaturized microphone was introduced. Called the CCM, this series
represents the smallest ever "classic" studio condenser microphone
(that is, without an electret element), with a fully balanced output.
By employing surface mount technology the microphone amplifier could
fit inside the capsule housing, no longer requiring the use of
"active" cables and tubes

to achieve miniaturization. At the same time, the reliability and
immunity to interference of the system was improved without any
influence on its quality. In 1997 the CMXY 4V stereo microphone was
introduced. This is a novel arrangement of two compact cardioid
microphones, which rotate together to form an X-Y pair spread at any
angle. It is the smallest microphone of its type, intuitive and easy
to use thanks to its simple mechanical design. From the beginning of
2003, and for the first time in more than 50 years, the company logo

significantly. The intention is to give it more power. Its essential
symbolism and elegance remain unchanged but it now states clearly
SCHOEPS' primary interest and manufacturing expertise: microphones.
Schoeps is unquestionably among the most innovative microphone
manufacturers in the world, leading the way in many developments.
Central to its design philosophy over the years is the company's
insistence on absolute sound neutrality of the microphones. It is
really no wonder that Schoeps has so many supporters, not only in the
area of classical music recording and reinforcement, but also in film
and television. No doubt part of its success is due to the fact that,
in a space of only 1500 square meters, a total of 35 employees
develop, manufacture and distribute the whole range of Schoeps
products. Staff turnover is very small, which says much about the
family atmosphere in the company. Many an employee has celebrated his
or her 25th anniversary with Schoeps. Continuity is and will remain
very important at Schoeps. Despite many outside offers, Ulrich Schoeps
intends to continue the life's work of his father. Ulrich Schoeps

So you have to keep paying someone rent, even if your house and land

Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional,

I cannot believe how incredibly stupid Ned the Organ Donor is. I mean
rock-hard stupid. Blazing hot mid-day sun on Mercury stupid. Surface
of Venus under 80 atmospheres of red hot carbon dioxide and sulfuric
acid vapor dehydrated for 300 million years rock-hard stupid. Stupid
so stupid that it goes way beyond the stupid we know into a whole
different sensorium of stupid. Edtard is trans-stupid stupid.
Meta-stupid. Stupid so collapsed upon itself that it is within its
own Schwarzschild radius. Black hole stupid. Stupid gotten so dense
and massive that no intellect can escape. Singularity stupid.
Edtard emits more stupid/second than our entire galaxy otherwise
emits stupid/year. Quasar stupid. Nothing else in the universe can
be this stupid. Edtard is an oozingly putrescent primordial
fragment from the original Big Bang of Stupid, a pure essence of
stupid so uncontaminated by anything else as to be beyond the laws of
physics that define maximally extrapolated hypergeometric
n-dimensional backgroundless stupid as we can imagine it. Edtard
is Planck stupid, a quantum foam of stupid, a vacuum decay of stupid,
a grand unified theory of stupid.

Edtard is the epiphany of stupid. Edtard is stooopid.

And his mother dresses him funny. Girls clothes.

It's best to Ask the Man Who Owns One beforehand. Google is Your Friend.
Thus, from a posting on DSLReports:

"I subscribed but when I checked it out it was nothing but a front for a
porn website. All the regular clips can be found on you tube, since that is
where it send you when you want to see a video. Then there is a link where
it states you must be 18+, there you can see adult videos. This website is
terrible, don't subscribe."
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19233415-JohnQ-TV-Any-good

(Actually, JohnQ's home page should have told you that...)

I don't know the economics of it, but porn and gambling come-ons seem to pay
off for the sites that front for them. Click-and-pay, like spam, seems to be
based on the fact that even if 1/10 (or for that matter 1/100) of 1% of
those accosted buy the service, the spammer or web sponsor makes a profit:
his costs are virtually zero when spread out over the 100 million
addressees. So every time you click on a link out of curiosity and even
without any intention of buying, and whether or not you do buy, the site
owner gets money.

Hence all those thousands of sites that have names based on misspellings of
other sites. (And I note that Amazon has bought up a lot of those, such as
Amazoon, Amaxon, etc. just to put an end to it as far as they are
concerned.)

Bitten clothing

Bitten clothing is the name given to the line of apparel that was
launched recently by a famous Hollywood celebrity Sarah Jessica
Parker. Bitten clothing and accessories are available only in Steve &
Barry's chain of stores. Steve & Barry's chain of stores is one of the
famous chain stores in the US which has a collection of high quality
and low cost branded apparel. Besides Bitten, Steve & Barry's stores
have an authentic collection of top American brands such as Hershey's,
Hasbro and General Mills etc.

Bitten apparel and accessories are designed and carved according to
the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker. Most of the Bitten apparel designs
are derived from Sarah Jessica Parker's wardrobe.

The name Bitten is given by Sarah Jessica parker as it was her first
reaction when she visited Steve and Barry's store. She was inspired by
the company's mission and was "bitten!", as she got mesmerized by the
high quality and low cost collection of Steve and Barry and she
decided she would try some thing similar.

To be precise, Bitten clothing collection was launched in the market
in august 2007. The collection includes some thousand apparel pieces
including dresses, jackets, wool and cashmere sweaters, shoes, belts,
lingerie.

Sarah Jessica parker's motive behind the launch of Bitten clothing is,
she wants to provide quality clothing at lower prices, and she feels
fashion is not a luxury but a right of every woman.

Bitten clothing range offers high quality and low cost apparel and
accessories to people. No item in Bitten line of apparel costs more
than $19.95. It has been made sure that Bitten apparel and accessories
can satisfy the needs of women of all ages. Also, the range of sizes
of Bitten apparel is very extensive. Tops of range XS to XXL, bottoms
of range 0-22 and shoes of range 5 to 11 are available.

The Bitten's motto is "it is every women's absolute right to have a
pulled-together fashionable, positive wardrobe with cash left over to
live. GET BITTEN."

As mentioned earlier, Bitten clothes are only available in Steve &
Barry's chain of stores; they cannot be bought on phone, mail or
internet. However, the whole range of bitten clothes and accessories
can be accessed at www.bittensjp.com.

The inspiration behind Bitten is derived from Sarah Jessica parker's
visit to Steve & Barry outlets couple of years ago, where high quality
clothes were available at very economical prices. She knows how
difficult it is to get well dressed with a low budget, as she was
among the eight children in her family.

Apart from Sarah Jessica parker other celebrities who joined the low
cost clothes revolution are Isaac Mizrahi, Nicole Miller and Vera
Wang.

The latest collection was launched under Bitten on November 21, 2007.
The collection was presented in the project runway; a conscious effort
was made such that the cost of any apparel did not exceed $15. The
runway collection includes Mercer two Button vest, V-neck pullover,
sleeveless flare leg mercer trouser, textured tunic, crackled slim leg
mercer trouser, long sleeve stripe tribeca, basic footless tights and
belts.

Sports Swimwear

If swimming in competitions, choose a bathing suit that promotes speed
and smooth swimming. There are special types of swimsuits that have
"vertical line" designs in the material to channel water away from the
body. Competition swimwear should be slick, comfortable, and allow for
easy body movement.

I think the point was about the most common use of a
(non-farm/non-industrial) vehicle. Which is driving and parking
on public roadways. Which is the point of the thread - the
seizure of unapproved vehicles which are parked on a public
street.

The motor home in question wasn't drivable, as admitted by its
former owner. Also, she had a three-day notice, which may even
have been a big orange sticker on the windscreen, saying, "Move
Or Get Towed." That is how the city of San Franciso used to get
attention with a car that was suspected of abandonment or
non-running storage (maybe still do.) Although I don't know how
Ontario does it.

And then, she complained about not getting a
last-minute chance to jump-start for a dead battery. Why didn't
she get the jump-start during the three-day notice period?

That woman had a 19-year-old son living with her. So she's old
enough to know about this stuff.

(Years ago, when I got my SF warning sticker, I just grumbled a
bit, got in the car, and moved it around to the other side of the
park. It wasn't rocket science.)

The article about the Ontario seizures included a cop pointing
out another vehicle parked nearby, that lacked an engine or
transmission. And thus was obviously in violation of the "public
roadway" laws about public parking versus private storage.

Although, of course, the less usual concept of a motor vehicle is
that you really can drive around, with no registration, no
inspection, no tax, no speed limits, etc, on private property.
And I'm fairly sure that you can even do so while drunk.

But, the homeless folks in the article were on the more
restrictive side of the public/private line.

And, anyway, I notice that you didn't mention the issue of yearly
taxes on "homes, land." Meaning real estate. And I am sure that
you know exactly what can happen if you fail to pay that gubmint
rent on "your" house or condo.

After which, it would be kind of difficult to drive or park your
unregistered vehicle on that formerly "private property" that got
seized by the gubmint to which you failed to pay the rent... uh,
I mean, "property tax."

The Do-It-Yourself Tax Cut

April 21, 2008
Nobody likes paying taxes, but the way we Americans complain about them
you'd think they were the only way we're getting skinned.

Reality: We're getting nickel-and-dimed all the time, and in lots of ways we
don't even notice. And yes, it really adds up. If we counted the cost, most
people would be stunned.

OK, tax is center stage right now. Last week was April 15. This week will
come "tax freedom day," the notional point in the year when the average
citizen starts working for themselves. Many people are eagerly awaiting
their rebates and their $600 stimulus checks. (Note: Thanks to the deficit,
these aren't really rebates. They're just loans from your kids. Something to
think about before you blow the money on a flat-screen TV.) And the
presidential campaign may very well hinge on taxes and how to balance the
budget.

So here's a radical idea: A do-it-yourself tax cut.

Don't wait for the politicians to pass a law or some bureaucrat to mail you
a check. Don't wait for Uncle Sam to put more money in your pocket. Here are
14 ways to do it that you do tomorrow on your own.

1. Change bank accounts. You could be earning at least 3% interest on the
balance in your checking account. Instead you're probably earning virtually
nothing -- and maybe paying a "relationship" or "account maintenance" fee
while the bank has free use of your money. Bankrate.com tracks the best
deals around. Savings: An easy $100 a year. At least.

2. Stop using other banks' ATMs. Sure it's a pain to have to remember to go
your own bank and get enough cash. But you'll live. If you use other banks'
ATMs you may be getting dinged for fees twice -- once by that bank, and one
by your own. It adds up. Do it three times a week and it could easily cost
you $300 a year.

3. Brown bag it to work. No, I'm not kidding. Just look at the sandwich
shops near your office every lunch hour. They're probably packed, recession
or not. But if you spend just $8 a day extra eating lunch, that costs $2,100
over a year. Do the math. Just brown bagging once a week, at an $8 saving,
saves $416 a year. That's from making your own sandwich once a week.

4. Change your household and car insurance. Shop for a better deal. And
raise your deductibles. Savings: Maybe $200.

5. Sign up for rewards credit cards. Outraged at what you're paying for
groceries and gasoline? You can often get 3% back on a lot of purchases by
signing up for the right cards. It sounds trivial, but these are real
savings. Savings: Maybe $200 a year.

6. Get rid of your POTS. That's "Plain Old Telephone Service." If you
already have high-speed Internet at home, why are you also paying $40 a
month or more for a phone? Switch to a Voice Over Internet Protocol provider
like Skype. It costs a few cents a call. Easy saving: At least $400 a year.

7. Change your cell phone plan, or your provider -- or both. You're almost
certainly paying too much. If you don't believe me, call your provider and
threaten to leave. I'll bet they offer you real savings to stay. What does
that say about your current bill? Some companies -- like T Mobile -- are
competing aggressively on price. There are plans that can stop you getting
skinned when you go over your monthly minutes. Most people can probably save
a couple of hundred bucks a year on their bill. And while we're on the
subject, do you want the latest phone with all the bells and whistles? Fine,
that will be $200. Alternatively you could keep your old phone, and sell the
subsidized new one to some other sucker on eBay. That's worth another $100 a
year. Total savings: Maybe $300.

8. You pay how much for TV? When you count the cable or satellite service,
often in several rooms, premium channels, and TiVo, some people spend well
over $100 a month. Basic cable, a Netflix account and a DVD recorder can
easily save $600 a year. And DVDs come with an amazing new technology that
lets you watch them on any room in the house at no extra fee. You pick the
disc up and carry it."

9. The biggest waste of money for most people? "No. 1 on the list is eating
out and drinking out," says Jan Geiger, a veteran financial planner in
Atlanta, Ga. "That's absolutely, by far, No. 1." She says most people never
add it all up. When she makes her clients do just that, "They usually freak
out. It can easily be $400, $500 or $600 a month." No, you don't have to
live on noodles. Just cutting one $100 meal, or two $50 meals, a month will
save you $1,200 a year.

10. Buy a cheaper car and pay cash. Yes, that brand new luxury car says
"smart and rich." Unfortunately, it only says that about your car dealer.
About you it says "pretentious, and probably in debt."

11. Change your investments. If you're like most Americans, a lot of your
money is invested poorly. That means you're not maximizing your investment
in tax-free vehicles like 401(k)s and IRAs. And it means you're paying
rip-off fees for mediocre mutual funds. Few are worth them: Most of the time
you're better off in index funds. Savings: maybe $500 a year.

12. Shop online. When you see something in the stores, don't buy it. Go home
and check out the price online. I'll bet it's a lot cheaper, even when you
include the shipping. You may also skip state sales tax. Sometimes the
savings can be staggering. And if you get an online loyalty credit card,
such as the one offered by Amazon, you can save an extra 3%. If you just
save 10% this way on a mere $2,000 worth of spending a year,
congratulations: You have just made $200.

13. Cutting out crap. Remember before we paid for "iced tea" and water? And
half of what people buy has no obvious purpose or merit. If you don't
believe me, go to the mall and look around. And most gifts are a total waste
of money. I'll bet the typical household could save $500 a year just cutting
out crap.

14. Stop wasting energy. No, you don't have to shiver through the winter or
swelter in the height of summer. But a handful of simple steps can probably
save you $200 a year. Among them: Switching off electronics at the socket
overnight so they don't keep draining power.

These are only ballpark figures. The actual savings will vary enormously by
household. But just the steps above can save a household thousands a year.

That is, for most, a far bigger number than any tax proposals you will hear
about in the campaign.

This is not a political column. The debate about higher taxes or lower
spending can be carried on elsewhere. But it does seem to make sense to
tackle costs everywhere we find it, and not just in our tax bills.
