Well it's a gamble. It didn't work out in your favor when you got laid
off. But let's look at this from the other side. I got majorly sick
last year. Like, I almost died. When I checked myself into the
hospital, the triage nurse (or whatever you call her) said she'd never
seen vital signs like I had (at the time) in someone who was still
breathing. (ouch!) I was out of work for well over a month. I had a
week of sick time I could use. After that, I luckily had short-term
disability coverage. Unfortunately, short-term disability coverage
didn't even give me 30% of my usual pay. I would have been in much
better shape if I had 700 hours of sick leave to draw on. I had
doctors' notes stating there was no way I was going back to work
anytime soon, so using that much sick time would not have been an
issue. I would have used about 250 hours of sick time, if I'd had it
available. We were basically living off of our savings for a while.

I understand your point where the people who took it whenever they
earned it were way smarter. But what if one of them had gotten sick,
like really sick? -Dave

Short- or long-term disability. I finally signed up for LTD during the first
open-enrollment period without realizing that it was a total waste because by
that time I had so much sick leave accumulated :-(

You have enough sick leave to cover you for the remainder of your life
(or age 65, depending on your policy) if you became sick or injured
today and could no longer work?

Now, that's interesting.

That was in 1990. I've been retired since 1995. SS+Medicare now. Unless I
break some useful body parts I'm good to go :-)

Google "sit.wav". Download the file, play it on the computer as you start your
machine message, then say what you will.

I did it before the do-not-call list thing, and it made a huge difference after
a few months.

all depends. if you can get a fixed rate mortgage for less than what
your rent payments are, and are willing to fix most things on your own
its probably worth it.

And is even if you dont have that cheaper than renting too,
essentially because its a forced form of saving. You're much
less likely to fritter the extra over rent away on trivial stuff.

You end up with many more options later on when you have a significant asset.

The main downside with owning is that it does make it less easy
to move but on the other hand you cant get into a situation where
the rental market is very tight and you get jerked around by that too.

Would you believe it burns FASTER, not necessarily better?
As others have said it is because the surface becomes rougher.

That sees the surface much rougher at a microscopic level than before you do that.

I don't know about the other response regarding it being drier afterwards,
but I suspect part of it has to do with the structure of the paper being
disrupted from swelling and then shrinking. That would increase the
surface area, and produce lots of small, fine slivers sticking up instead
of a smooth, dense surface.

That may be true, but you'd think that
would happen in the paper making process

Nope, that deliberately makes the surface smoother than otherwise.

I've used a Panasonic "linear motor" shaver for many years. Works
well, lasts 2 weeks on a charge, blades last a long time (2+ years).

Iraqi Cabinet approves Exxon Mobil-Shell oil deal

(AP) 2 days ago

BAGHDAD ‹ Iraq's prime minister says his Cabinet has approved a deal
with a consortium led by U.S.-based Exxon Mobil to develop a prized oil
field in the country's south.

The Exxon Mobil-Royal Dutch Shell group will develop the 8.6 billion
West Qurna 1 field and received $1.90 per barrel produced. It plans to
boost production from 280,000 barrels per day to 2.325 million barrels
within seven years.

The Oil Ministry is expected to finalize the 20-year service deal soon.

Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki also said Tuesday that his government is
still discussing a second deal with a consortium led by Italy's Eni to
develop the 4.1 billion barrel Zubair field.

My wife works at a bank with a nearly identical sick leave policy.
Additionally if someone, even with a full sick leave bank, calls in
sick the work day before or after a paid holiday, they lose that
holiday pay.

Same here. My employer has what's called combined time off. I'm
salaried, so this doesn't apply to me, but if someone calls in sick,
they have to use two CTO days (basically vacation days) before they can
use actual sick time. If you don't have any CTO, then you have to take
those 2 days unpaid. They also track your sick days. Too many Mondays
or Fridays and you get a couple points. Too many points in a 12-month
period and it goes on your record.

Where I used to work there was no such thing as a "sick day". If
you're sick, stay home. We got paid anyway. If one was gone more
than, IIRC, five days one could be required to bring in a doctor's
note showing that you were physically able to return to work. The
medical department may get involved at that point too. I was never
"sick" more than three days (sprained ankle) so never had to bring a
note. Short-term "sick leave" was up to 12 months, with a decision at
that point whether to continue it or go onto long-term disability.
Everyone was treated like an adult and for the most part no one abused
the system. Obviously that won't work everywhere.

Where I work now we get three weeks "leave" a year (and can save up to
two). Use it as you see fit. Not quite as nice.

When I wanted to go skiing on a "sick day" I always chose Tuesday or Wednesday.
I still ended up losing over 700 hours of sick leave when I was laid off
after 12 years. The people who took it whenever they earned it were way
smarter :-(

It the idea of a pattern. If you get sick 6 times in one year, and
they are all on Fridays, chances are you weren't really sick. Once
isn't a big deal. For example, I get sick about twice a year. So,
nobody doubts me. They know I must be sick. But we've had people who
are sick 2-4 times per MONTH. Something isn't right. And each time
they are sick, we have to call somebody in for overtime or go without.
That means that everybody else has to work harder without getting
extra pay. Nobody wants to have a coworker who can't show up on a
regular basis.

People who abuse the system have a much different pattern than those
who rarely need the system.

Questions & Answers
Opening and Mixing Tamiflu® Capsules with Liquids if Child Cannot
Swallow Capsules

October 28, 2009 2:00 PM ET
Is there a shortage of oral suspension (liquid) Tamiflu®?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the maker of Tamiflu®
(Roche Adobe PDF fileExternal Web Site Icon) have said that available
supplies of liquid Tamiflu® for children are limited.
What is being done about this?
A pharmacist can make a Tamiflu® suspension (liquid) using available
Tamiflu® adult capsules, which are in not in short supply. CDC is
alerting pharmacists about this option and providing instructions on
how to prepare a suspension using adult capsules. Some pharmacies,
including some chains, can do this already, others are not yet
prepared. Children's doses of Tamiflu® are also available in capsules.
What can I do if my child cannot swallow capsules?
If your doctor prescribes Tamiflu® capsules for your child and your
child cannot swallow capsules, the prescribed capsules may be opened
and mixed with a sweet thick liquid and given that way.
What liquids can I use?
A thick and sweet liquid, such as regular or sugar-free chocolate
syrup, that masks the flavor of the medicine can be mixed with the
contents of the Tamiflu® capsule. Sugar-free sweet liquids are
available. The child should consume the liquid mixture entirely.
If my child can't swallow capsules, how do I open Tamiflu capsules and
mix the medicine?
Pour a small amount (about a spoonful) of sweet, thick liquid into a
cup or bowl. Carefully open the Tamiflu® capsule prescribed by your
doctor and pour out all of the powder inside the capsule and mix it
into the liquid. The exact amount of liquid used doesn't matter, as
long as the powder inside the capsule is mixed in well. (All of the
medicine may not dissolve. Just be sure it is all well mixed.) Use
only the prescribed dose.
What will I need to do this?
You will need

* The prescribed Tamiflu® capsule
* A small bowl or cup and a spoon
* 1-2 Teaspoons of sweetened liquid

How do I mix the ingredients?

* Pour a small amount (about a spoonful) of a sweet thick liquid
into a cup or bowl.
* Holding one capsule over a small bowl, carefully pull the
capsule open and pour the complete contents of the capsule into the
bowl.
* Stir the mixture and give the entire dose to the child with a
spoon.

Should my child take all of the mixture?
Yes, make sure your child takes all of the medicine mixture.

How do racists, anti-Semites and all-purpose hate-mongers view the
possibility of America's first black president? Not necessarily the
way you think they would.

By David Peisner

If recent polls are to be believed, white voters favor John McCain
over Barack Obama by nearly ten percentage points, but the McCain and
Obama camps probably haven't factored in the following fact: In an
informal Esquire survey, three out of four white supremacists prefer
Obama, while McCain is the clear favorite among black nationalists.
This is just one of many surprising views that emerged after we talked
to extremists about this historic electoral showdown between a 46-year-
old black man and a 71-year-old white man.

Tom Metzger

Who: Director, White Aryan Resistance
Likes: White people, karaoke, environmentalists
Dislikes: Race-mixing, Jews, the federal government, capitalism
Career Highlights: Was Grand Dragon of Ku Klux Klan in the 70s; won
the Democratic primary during his bid for Congress in 1980; appeared
on the episode of Geraldo Rivera's show in 1988 when Rivera's nose was
broken in a brawl.

"The corporations are running things now, so it's not going to make
much difference who's in there, but McCain would be much worse. He's a
warmonger. He's a scary, scary person -- more dangerous than Bush.
Obama, according to his book, Dreams Of My Father, is a racist and I
have no problem with black racists. I've got the quote right here: 'I
found a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievance and animosity
against my mother's white race.' The problem with Obama is he's being
dishonest about his racial views. I'd respect him if he'd just come
out and say, 'Yeah, I'm a black racist.' I don't hate black people. I
just think it's in the best interest of the races to be separated as
much as possible. See, I'm a leftist. I'm not a rightist. I hate the
transnational corporations far more than any black person."

Erich Gliebe

Who: Chairman, National Alliance
Likes: Third Reich, the movie Rocky
Dislikes: integration, Jewish-controlled media
Career Highlights: Turning white-power record label, Resistance
Records, into a million-dollar-a-year business juggernaut; an 8-0
record as a professional boxer under the nickname, "The Aryan
Barbarian."

"Obama might be a better candidate for our cause because he's racially
conscious. One of our big things in the National Alliance is to raise
the racial consciousness of our people. Young whites in universities,
they've been stripped of any kind of racial identity. Obama may be a
racist in a positive sense for his people -- that will awaken a lot of
the whites, knock some sense into them. They'll see that non-white
Americans are allowed to be proud of who they are, to be racially
conscious, to talk about their people or their community without being
attacked as being racist. Let's face it, white people aren't going to
fight for their causes, for their kind with a white president. I don't
think McCain even acknowledges that a white race exists. He's all
about granting amnesty to illegal aliens. The fact he wants to keep us
in wars in the Middle East for 100 years, that's not a good thing. I
give Obama credit, he seems to have stuck to his guns as far as
pulling the troops out of Iraq. He's a very intelligent man, an
excellent speaker and has charisma. John McCain offers none of that.
Perhaps the best thing for the white race is to have a black
president. My only problem with Obama is perhaps he's not black
enough."

Ron Edwards

Who: Imperial Wizard, Imperial Klans of America
Likes: Guns, bed sheets, burning crosses
Dislikes: Black people, homosexuals, immigrants
Career Highlights: Sued in 2007 by the Southern Poverty Law Center for
inciting the brutal beating of a Latino teenager; building the IKA
into one of the nation's largest Klan groups by allowing non-
Christians to join.

"Obama, I think he's a piece of shit. I don't care that his mother was
white. I don't think he has enough brains to do anything good. All
he's living off of is the color of his skin to get elected. I don't
think America wants a black president. Most of them are too afraid to
say that they believe the way I believe. They sit around their dinner
table and talk the way I do, but when they get out in public, they
have two faces and show the other face. When people are voting in the
booth privately, they'll vote Republican even if they're a Democrat.
If he wins, I'll laugh. I don't like McCain, but he's the only one I
can vote for. He's against a lot of the things that I'm for. I'm
afraid that he's going to mess with gun laws. But I'm going Republican
and I talked to my guys and most of them are voting for McCain too."

Rocky Suhayda

Who: Chairman, American Nazi Party
Likes: Hitler, white people
Dislikes: Jews, immigrants, multinational corporations
Career highlights: Being widely quoted bemoaning in the fact that so
few Aryan-Americans had the cojones of the 9/11 hijackers: "If we were
one-tenth as serious, we might start getting somewhere."

"White people are faced with either a negro or a total nutter who
happens to have a pale face. Personally I'd prefer the negro. National
Socialists are not mindless haters. Here, I see a white man, who is
almost dead, who declares he wants to fight endless wars around the
globe to make the world safe for Judeo-capitalist exploitation, who
supports the invasion of America by illegals -- basically a
continuation of the last eight years of Emperor Bush. Then, we have a
black man, who loves his own kind, belongs to a Black-Nationalist
religion, is married to a black women -- when usually negroes who have
'made it' immediately land a white spouse as a kind of prize -- that's
the kind of negro that I can respect. Any time that a prominent person
embraces their racial heritage in a positive manner, it's good for all
racially minded folks. Besides, America cares nothing for the
interests of the white American worker, while having a love affair
with just about every non-white on planet Earth. It'd be poetic
justice to have a non-white as titular chief over this decaying modern
Sodom and Gomorrah."

Marooned on Sea of Iraqi Oil, but Unable to Tap Its Wealth

By TIMOTHY WILLIAMS
Published: November 7, 2009

BASRA, Iraq ‹ The orange glow of the giant natural gas flares in the oil
fields around Basra represents this bustling city¹s wealth of natural
resources. But for the impoverished people who live near them, the
flames only serve as a reminder of their inability to share in the
riches that lie beneath their feet.

Joao Silva for The New York Times

A lack of sanitation services in Basra breeds flies, like those swarming
a sleeping baby.

Poverty is rampant in Basra, Iraq, despite its oil fields. Few area
residents can find jobs at the nearby refinery.

Vendors in Basra cannot afford vehicles.
The New York Times

Up to 80 percent of Iraq's oil comes from the Basra area.

The area around Basra, Iraq¹s second largest city and main port,
accounts for as much as 80 percent of the country¹s oil production. It
has emerged as Iraq¹s best hope for stability and prosperity as it
prepares to sell off its top undeveloped oil fields to foreign companies
at an auction next month. Of the five largest fields that will be bid
on, four are in or around Basra.

I tried this before they started the no-call list. No joy. Mostly I get calls
now from home-improvement people, but some idiot from The Four Corners (I
assume the Indian reservation) calls at least once a week. I've yelled at the
stupid cows, but the calls keep coming. Last time I just laid the phone down
until they hung up. That was two weeks ago. Maybe I'm on to something.
