I could be wrong but I don't know any cell phone plans that charge extra
for domestic long distance. That is purely a landline concept.

"Phone Power" and similar services are not computer based.

Thanks for clarifying that Phone Power and Skype do not necessarily
require a computer. I'll look into that. Right now I don't want to
spend $80 for PP so that is out, but maybe Skpe, or maybe PagePlus or
one of the major carriers has a plan that will work for us.

Okay, so I looked up PagePlusCellular's $30/mo plan and I have some
questions: (probably dumb questions but I really have never gotten
into the whole cell phone culture):

They say "Standard rates will apply for roaming, international voice,
international text and premium SMS. If you use more than the included
minutes/messages/data in this plan, you will be charged the overage
rates listed below. "

So : roaming. When would I be roaming? Is that any time I use the
phone outside my area code or ? Because here in L.A. where there are 3
or 4 area codes that could add up pretty easily at I think they said
an extra 10 cents a minute...

And these 1200 minutes - does that include the minutes when others
CALL US, or is that just when we call OUT?

Straight talk a wallmart cell phone, comes standard with unlimited
phone text picture message and internet, free computerized 411:( the
computerized 411 is less than useless and I didnt try the internet.
around here straighttalk is on verizon network and works fine.

NET 10 is my new cell provider:) around here its more reliable than
verizon.

50 bucks a month unlimited everything, phone text internet 411 with a
human being picture messaging too. although I havent tried the
internet access.

you buy the 50 buck card and the only added expense is sales tax.

verizons 10 buck friends and family add $8.86 in taxes and fees, call
it 9 bucks, almoost doubling the cost for friends and family
members.......

Net 10 appears to use the AT&T cell network around here which by my
testing is far better than verizons, way fewer dropped call areas.

I got pissed at verizon I started getting these dating texts from the
wierd number 70 705. they were interesting and I am getting divorced
so it was OK.

Out of curosity I finally sent a text back WHO ARE YOU, and got a
response in spanish.

the next day I got a text informing me I was now subbed to the 10 buck
a month premium message service.

The verizon CSR said I will take that off your bill they shouldnt of
done that! and blocked it so it couldnt happen again.

But I never got a text you have unsubbed so a few days later I called
back and the rep said yes your unsubbed.....

Then I asked the service ending question:)

Did this company need verizons permission to do this?

sir verizon partnered with them........:(:(:( partnered wth a spammer?

Thats why I am going to net 10.... verizon drove me away. I was with
them for over 15 years.....

No. PagePlus uses the Verizon Wireless cell phone network. You
are roaming anytime you are off that network. You could be
in New York on the Verizon network and _not_ be roaming.

Yes, inbound and outbound minutes.

Where did you come up with that? Phone Power with a 12 month contract
only costs $35.12 to start up. That includes your first month of
service and the shipping cost of the phone power ATA.

I got it here.
So I guess there're different ways to sign up... It's all rather
complicated... I'll have to look at it to understand the different
options I suppose...

He said, among so many other lies, that homeless in America don't have
bikes. How does he know if lives in the Outback?

Well, he just made it up. I bet you the two major groups that ride
bikes in the cities are HOMELESS & IMMIGRANTS. When that is the case,
you are often treated like one of them, and sometimes it takes a
trained eye to tell them apart. One such difference --besides the
quality of the bike-- is that real cyclists ride on the road whenever
possible while the survivors stick to the sidewalks. Then there's a
conflict between pedestrian and bicycle where the pedestrian has the
most to lose. I tell pedestrians, "Hey, I'm sorry to be here but it's
a jungle out there."

As a rule I treat sidewalk riders as low life people and people like
Rod Speed --who doesn't even like cycling-- deserve scorn and
ridicule. He better tell us something we don't know about Australia.

Many more are kids who cant legally drive, and those who cant

Mindlessly silly with those who ride for exercise.

Depends on whether its legal or not.

It's legal in 99% of places.

The cops don't give a damn that you ride on sidewalks, unless you ride
in certain exclusive areas where it is expressly banned. I only know
one such area --very exclusive-- and no bike lane of any kind on the
road!

Let me tell you something I witnessed today: Very select area --Jewish
town-- so much so that kids ride alone --kids are afraid to ride alone
everywhere-- and this black guy comes barreling down at 15mph --he
almost hit me-- and nobody cared. They all ride on sidewalks so that's
part of the culture.

Not until we impound bikes on sidewalks while providing space on the
road we will be talking about civilization.

I've never seen a homeless person with a bike. By and large, such
possessions are a hindrance to them. For the working poor bikes are not
uncommon. Holding on to them is hard though.

In general, the USian police have "better" things to do than protect the
homeless.

Me neither. Some had them during the great depression apparently.

They mostly dont 'protect' many at all, just respond to reports of crime
and try to work out who did it etc.

In that sense they do 'protect' the homeless in the sense
of attempting to catch and lock up those that kill them etc.

FREEDOM. This is the important word, but so is the word SOLUTIONS, so
the Revolution is about the FREEDOM & SOLUTIONS.

A guy from Libya called in the radio the other day and said that what
Libya --and the whole Arab world-- needed was MUTUAL AID. In case you
don't remember who proposed it, I quote this:

'If we ... ask Nature: "who are the fittest: those who are continually
at war with each other, or those who support one another?" we at once
see that those animals which acquire habits of MUTUAL AID are

Thanks. Never heard of Phone Power, I'll have to check it out.
The main thing is that I want a phone for long distance that my wife
can use in the bedroom, that is not connected to the computer (I
already have Magic Jack connected to the computer for my business and
I don't think I can have a 2nd one, right?). And some of them don't
work well if I am USING the computer while she is using the phone,
right?

So really I think what I need is a cell phone that gives free or at
least, say, 1200 min. a month. I think 1200 min. a month would cover
her.

The thing with Page Plus Cellular (which I have on my "emergency" cell
phone that I keep in my car and only use when I really need a phone in
the car (seldom), is that you have to pay for the minutes even when
someone *calls you*, no? So that would not work for her even though
her sister has free minutes and can call her, right?

Jeez, this phone thing is very complicated! All I know is I don't
think I should have to pay ATT $35-40/month just for the ability to
receive local calls and make long distance calls via onesuite.

By the way, onesuite is great at 2.5cents a minute for ld from a land
line. But even that adds up when we call other states frequently...

After reviewing some of the suggestions here I realize that while
Phone Power seems to be a good deal, I already have Magic Jack and
don't want to spend $79.95 to set up what is essentially a Magic Jack
with 2 lines instead of one.

So really what I have decided I need is a cheap cell phone service
with at least 1000 min. a month "free" long distance.

So please keep recommendations limited to cell phone service. I use
PagePlusCellular for my "emergency" cell phone that I keep in the car
for those rare times when I really need it, but it's really not that
cheap for long distance calls of the type my wife likes to make - of
an hour or two at a time. So what I guess we need is a cell phone
"plan" that includes a lot of free long distance, to replace our land
line; OR a cheaper land line than ATT which is charging us :
$29.70 a month for basic service (which includes $8.50 month (!!?) for
call waiting!
Then they have WHOLE BUNCH of fees and taxes and surcharges which
bring it up to:
$41.60/month!

And that does not include any long distance or local call charges at
all, this is just Basic Service!

I resent the idea of giving ATT all this money for one BASIC land line
service, and I must find an alternative asap! But like I said, I
really don't want a computer based service like Phone Power or Magic
Jack (which I already have for a 2nd line).

Google Voice gives free unlimited long distance by ringing your home
phone. You have to have a land line.

Not sure if you can use this, but it is worth mentioning. ATT used to
offer a "message base" (land line) package that gave all free incoming
calls and limit outgoing calls to 30 a month.

One more comment about Phone Power; then I'll shut up. The Phone Power
ATA (Analoge telephone adaptor) does not require the use of your
computer.
Your computer does not have to be on for it to work (unlike Magic Jack).
It plugs into your network and only requires that your router be
turned on.
I just wanted to clearify that.
So, moving right along...

>
> So really what I have decided I need is a cheap cell phone service

I don't think you are going to get that. Most free mins are
going to be nites and weekends. the free nite minutes generally
start at 9:00pm. Except maybe Sprint. I think their free nite
minutes start at 7:00 or 8:00.
The Page Plus Talk and Text 1200 plan at $29.95 per month for 1200 mins
is pretty hard to beat. Although it doesn't have any free mins.
The price per min is the same for local or long distance.
If you are looking for free mins, then you are going to have spend
some time on the major carrier's web sites comparing plans.

>
> I resent the idea of giving ATT all this money for one BASIC land line

I hear ya. I resented paying Verizon $48.00 per month for a landline.
That's why I switched to a VoIP service.

FWIW: I would check with Magic Jack to see if you can have multiple
units. I saw one of their infomercials and they seemed to indicate
that you could. If that is the case, you could get an old computer,
say, a 1mhz Celeron or Athalon running Win XP. Then put it in a corner
and dedicate it to running the MAgic Jack. I know someone who has
done this with his old laptop. But, he also has the laptop doing
lite file server duties as well.

I'll reiterate my suggestion for Skype. Although it is generally
a computer based service, you can get IP phones that are compatible
with Skype. They can be used without needing a computer. Check
the Skype web site for a list of compatible phones.

You may attack Ed for some of his posts on here. And even I did as
well. However, whether or not you agree with him his posts generally
make good and fair points.

But, as I found out a couple of years ago. If you have a good point
and actually make your case even Ed can be understanding and, quite
possibly, change his mind.

Yes I did find this out for myself on one occasion. And I am sure
that Ed will agree. It was because of this that I will not "attack"
Ed. However, I do disagree with him on some occasions. Just as he
disagrees with me.

Perhaps if you would post more than what you have been it might be a
bit better. But your infantile posts do absolutely nothing.

Yeah, I agree too. Ed is erratic but doesn't have a bad heart. Rod
however is an imbecile who posts here while he hates bikes.

All he says, "Wrong again." I'm sure he's a frustrated man in the
Outback and wants to emigrate to NYC, like Crocodile Dundee.

Wrong, as always. They clearly piss the donkey off and he then proves
to the world exactly what he is.

what's truly amazing is this. The rest of us here do not have to
continually change our display names to avoid the "plonk". You
continue to do that just to get a rise out of people. You might think
it's cute but it simply makes you yet another troll.

I think Big Oil rather bribe the likes of Gadhafi than chip in with
the American people...

"In the world of Big Oil, Albert "Jack" Stanley was legendary for
winning billion-dollar contracts in Third World countries as the
Halliburton (HAL, news, msgs) executive who knew all the secrets of
deals in places like Malaysia, Egypt and Yemen.

In the wake of his admission in a guilty plea last week that he had
resorted to bribes, kickbacks and high-level corruption to secure
deals in Nigeria, however, Stanley now lies at the center of a
widening scandal in the oil industry that has implications for
corporations and governments across the globe."

I'm glad I mentioned the ape bike because it does NOT fit in the bus
rack and it does NOT fit on the road, so I must do like most Americans
do and transport the bike in the car to the launching place.

They think they are clean, but they pollute more by driving than they
save by biking. And now I'm part of it too.

WE ARE ALL PART OF THIS PIGSTY CALLED DEMOCRACY, some willingly some
reluctantly.
