Makes more sense to start with a shipping container and
replace the metal doors with a decent glass patio door etc.

Those last five words are the problem. In most places, the climate
won't allow it. Those sheds are not insulated and the ones I've seen
are quite shabbily constructed.

The houses at the Tumbleweed Tiny House Company are larger than the 84
sq ft house, and cost more than $10K, but are far better designed and
constructed and well worth the price. I would buy the plans and do the
construction myself, but not everyone is into that.

I can't believe this thread has dragged on this long. Did anyone look at the
pictures? Her 'dream home' is a home-made camping trailer, nothing more.

A used airstream trailer comes to mind as an off-the-shelf viable
alternative.

Its easy to insulate them.

Yeah, I'd start with a shipping container myself.

Not compared with a shipping container they arent.

You can get those already insulated, the ones that are refrigerated.

> I would buy the plans and do the construction myself, but not everyone is into that.

I'd use a shipping container myself, hell of a lot easier to do and much cheaper too.

Yes, even compared to a shipping container, they are.

Much harder to find an area that will allow them, too. We don't have
many warehouse districts where I live.

I wonder why conservatives didn't say that about all the "welfare queens
driving cadillacs in harlem". Remember welfare reform? Remember the
hard-nosed view of impoverished single mothers? Remember the vicious
spit and bile cast upon their helpless children? Remember bankruptcy
reform? Remember the baleful eye cast upon debtors?

Now we are supposed to say, que sera sera to zillions of taxpayer
dollars "infused" (meaning GIVEN away) to banks and yacht owners? Just
because they are SCARED of what might happen? That takes a special kind
of cowardice-- the kind that gets us what we deserve.

Why is conservative bullshit good just for poor people? Please, someone
explain to me.

I argue all that and far more. I argue that this "crisis" was
meticulously planned and carried out to deliberately transfer massive
wealth from one sector of society to another. And anyone with eyes can
see it.

Mark my words: all the money being transferred right this moment is
predetermined to disappear in a flash of "lost value". And the people
whose money it really is will lap it up, nodding knowingly while their
neighbor's children go hungry and homeless.

Churches of every denomination will swoop in to feast upon the economic
carrion, like the vultures they really are, and every American's
self-respect will suffer.

The only reason any of that is happening is because YOU and I and the

to have our families used as doormats by relatively well-off walmart
shoppers.

It helps "calm" the lenders, the speculators, and all the other greasy,
cannibalistic capitalists of whom all Americans think so highly. If they
are calmly receiving their extra-large, super-sized helping of YOUR
money every day, they are less likely to make life unpleasant for those
near them, like the massively-powerful and influential infants terrible

Wrong, its just an increase in the liquidity in the banking system, with
the banks paying the usual interest rate for those SHORT TERM funds.

And it aint those banks that are taking homes from people either.

Trouble is that you can't even manage to grasp that the most recent
increase in the liquidity in the banking system isnt even going to the
operations that did that securitization of sub prime loans.

> I argue that this "crisis" was meticulously planned and carried out to

Just another utterly mindless conspiracy theory.

And there is no massive transfer of wealth from one sector of society to another anyway.

> And anyone with eyes can see it.

Easy to claim, hell of a lot harder to actually substantiate that claim.

No thanks, you can't even manage to grasp that the most recent

Thats a different matter entirely to that being deliberately planned, let alone
actually being a transfer of wealth from one sector of society to another.

Its just gone, just like happens with a market crash.

> And the people whose money it really is will lap it up, nodding
> knowingly while their neighbor's children go hungry and homeless.

More utterly silly pig ignorant silly stuff. There are no kids going hungry,
the problem is that they ALL shovel too much food into their mouths.

And there are no kids without homes as a result of the securitization of sub
prime loans, those who loose money as a result are those who had money
to put into the fund that were stupid enough to engage in that sort of activity
like the Bear Stearns funds that went down the tubes very spectacularly indeed.

> Churches of every denomination will swoop in to feast upon the economic carrion,

None of those had the reserve increase liquidity like they did last week.

That in spades. They have lost a lot more as a result
of the securitization of sub prime loans than anyone else.

It actually does the exact opposite, because its the proof that
there is a massive problem with liquidity in the banking system.

The real reason its done is to prevent the short term money
market rates from spiking very spectacularly indeed.

> If they are calmly receiving their extra-large,
> super-sized helping of YOUR money every day,

They cant do that if you dont have any funds in the operations
that have been stupid enough to securitize sub prime loans,
and dont have any money in the stock market either.

If you have just got a prime loan, or have surplus funds in
any of the money markets, you benefit from that implosion
because risk has just been sensibly repriced.

No, the trouble is that people like you prefer to pretend that the
"liquidity" (why can't you just say "money", boy? Speaking plainly just
a wee bit too dangerous for you and your like at the moment?) is not
going anywhere. It is going somewhere. lt is REAL money. And it belongs
to other people who need it more than incompetent lenders.

I don't need to "grasp" any of your preschool rhetoric to cut through it
like a chainsaw through balsa wood. Nor does anyone else. Nobody cares
if AIG or WAMU go belly up. The money is going to their financiers, who
developed and gave birth to the entire industry. You know it. I know it.
And everyone else will know it if I have anything to say about it. It is
NOT their money.

There it is, people: in his mealy-mouthed way, he is talking about YOUR
money and mine.

*EXACTLY* what he said during the Enron theft. And your money
disappeared. Your kid's school probably cut music or art classes. Your
roads went longer without repair. But you could borrow money on easier

*EXACTLY* what he said during the S&L theft. Whoops! There goes your
money, too! How much do you suppose you would have right now if your
chunk were invested or saved?

But that's okay, everyone. Just sit back and take it right up the ass
like good citizens.

$100.00 camera and out of warranty? Not worth it. Even if you could get
it repaired for half that cost - highly unlikely - the repair would only
have a 30 to 90 day warranty at best. Especially if your intention is to
replace it with another camera costing only $100.00. The cost for
repair/cost to replace ratio doesn't make ecomonic sense.

You can buy these (C315 / C530 / CD50) refurbished for around $65.
For instance...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830170083
Recertified: Kodak EASYSHARE C530 Silver 5.0 MP Digital Camera $65

I can't imagine anyone repairing one of these for less than $65.
You are better off getting another camera.

Depends upon how old it is, mainly. A couple of places turned up in a web
search for "digital camera repair quote Kodak Easyshare C315":

www.digitechcamerarepair.com/

(wants you to fill in a request form)

www.precisioncamera.com/kodak-digital-camera-repair.html (has a link to
a cost estimator, but it doesn't seem to work with FireFox).

You might try taking the batteries out and leaving them out overnight.
Sometimes the control circutry gets confused, and leaving it unpowered
long enough for the residual charges to bleed off will clear up the problem.

After a bit of websearching, it looks like the General Electric A730
has the most bang for the buck at less than $100. 7MP, 3X optical zoom,
image stabilization, Mpeg-4 movie recording and ISO 1600.

Last time I checked on repairs to a Kodak camera from Kodak, they charged a
flat $150. Looks like you'd be better off with a new camera.

GE doesn't even register on dpreview.com, a bad sign. Kodak recently
announced they were phasing out low-end cameras, and their low-end ones
were really, really low-end.

newegg's $75-$100 list for ideas for replacements:

Since Ohio reportedly doesn't have inspections, having a cracked
windshield will likely fit right in with all the other misfit vehicles.

When I lived in California (which was 10 years ago, this month), that
state had inspections, but the only thing they checked was vehicle
emissions. You could have failing brakes, a broken windshield, and
doors that wouldn't close all the way and California would let you
on the road. But put out too much pollution, and you're outta there.

No, you got into that situation as a result of your at-fault accident.

Since SF did pay your claim as agreed so they held their end of the deal.

P.S. Another issue that occurs to me: If you work normal 9 to 5 hours,
even with bumping the thermostat up to 85 you would still be running the
AC during the hottest part of the day - the period where it has to work
harder to keep the temperature down. Which would be the least frugal
time of the day to keep the thing running, especially if there is no one
there to get any benefit out of it.

And you can fix that with a programmable thermostat that starts that cooldown
so that the house will be at the lower setpoint when you arrive home.

Not likely with his house unless its rather under sized. And he
doesnt say what the temps typically get to with it turned off.

The word 'reserve' is there for a reason.

There are no individuals receiving those funds.

It isnt goint to those who are losing their homes.

Thats arguable too. You can make a case that its the financial institutions
that were stupid enough to produce that securitization of sub prime loans
and the regulatory system that allowed that terminal stupidity.

It wasnt just hedge funds that did that, and that $38B isnt bailing those out.

I think that there are shed kitsat the home depot that are just a bit
bigger than this house. They don't cost 10k either. One could easily
live in one of those if the climate allowed it.

Life

It is something that everyone has, yet very view people comprehend it,
or at least try to.

If I put a book on your hand and ask you, "What is a book?
I bet you can answer it easily.

If now I put a slice of bread on your hand and ask you, "What is
bread?
Definitely, you'll answer it correctly.

Likewise, sugar, rubber band, money, and many other things, I believe
you know exactly what they are.

But what about Life?

If represented as a little thing and put onto your hand, then I ask
you:
What is Life?

Can you answer it?
Not easy, right?

While every human being has life, or used to have it, it is absolutely
not easy to define what exactly Life is.

I tell you what, take some time, say 10 minutes, before you continue
reading, to try to answer the question with your own thought and idea.
Not other's idea that you got from a book somewhere, but with your
own.
Now, use your thought, perception, mind, experience, idea, meaning,
and feeling. Answer this question:
.
What is LIFE ???

Working

Every human being, like all living creatures, has basic routine needs.

Foods, clothing, medicines, etc.

Without meeting those needs people will die soon.

Most people do not want to die soon, then they have to meet those
basic routine needs.

How?

Have something to exchange: money.

How to get money?

See the title above.

Well, evil spammers aside, this is a frugal living newsgroup and life
does have some relevance. Nobody lives forever so we've all got a
limit to the time we have to live. A frugal goal might be to get the
most value we can out of that limited time. People can waste their
time, their lives, as easily as they can waste money. One way to waste
it would be to trade all your time, effort and lifespan for money and
material things that don't have any real value to you.

Hmmm...
That's intresting. Maybe you have to walk into a
store and get a brochure. Cuz that's where I saw it.

Then again, it may be burried under "Data plans".
THey seem to be pushing their unlimited messaging
plans right now.

FWIW: I just left AT&T and now use Sprint. Here in
Portland at least, Sprint is a slightly better deal.

WASHINGTON (AP) &lsqauo; The Federal Reserve, trying to calm turmoil on Wall
Street, announced Friday that it will pump as much money as needed into
the U.S. financial system to help overcome the ill effects of a
spreading credit crunch.

The Fed, in a short statement, said it will provide "reserves as
necessary" to help the markets safely make their way. The central bank
did not provide details but said it would do all it can to "facilitate
the orderly functioning of financial markets."

The Fed pushed $38 billion in temporary reserves into the system Friday,
on top of a similar move the day before.

While reading the story, ask yourself:

Where is all this money-- essentially welfare for the rich-- coming from?

Who is getting it? (don't be fooled by bank names and institutions; look
at the individuals who will be receiving these funds)

Why are *they* getting it, instead of those in danger of losing their
homes? (considering that "they" are the ones who created the mess to
begin with)

If "greed is good", the creed of contemporary America, then greed
sanctioned by government fiat, enforced by government policies and
protected at its most extreme by government force, is even better. Are
you getting yours? Now you know why bankruptcy protections were all but
stolen from middle class people while remaining in place for those with
the most to protect. Yes, it certainly was a plot. No, it wasn't hard to
predict. Yes, consumers are spineless rubes.

Let's get this pecking order correct here...

Now how much "campaign money" have you given to those in Washington?

How much "campaign money" have the above banks, etc. given?

Who is getting the money? Well, they are real flesh-and-blood people
just like you. They have names and families and pets, just like you.
They have mortgages, just like you. They have bills and worries, just
like you.

Unlike you, though, they also have more of YOUR money than you do.

They certainly are not like me as I have no debt / no need to borrow,
but you are likely correct in that they have way more money than I..

I not sure how pumping money into the economy helps the current loan
problems.

Those with good credit continue to have no problems getting loans. Those
who have poor credit are not getting loans where an increased money
supply likely has little effect on whether a bank, etc will be willing
to take on a high risk borrower in today's market.

Furthermore, the real problem today is mortgage defaults where more
money supply is not going to help those who are over their heads with
high ARMs. As for the hedge funds who speculated in high risk loans, why
should the government bail them out?

Nothing new, lots of wealthy companies are welfare queens.

Right down the road from me we (the taxpayers) are leveling a mountain
for a new Walmart. They have an existing store not far away where we did
the same thing not a long time ago. We also put in the access road,
utilities and gave them a 9 year tax exemption. The only reason they are
moving is the tax exemption is about to expire.

Yeah. People in part of Alabama are paying a special gas tax for
(drumroll please....)
A state financed golf course. (no joke)

The Fed had a choice of lowering the interest rate and fueling
continued speculation and inflation in the home market, or doing this.
It probably is the lesser evil of the available correctives. It may
take the edge off the pain, but I suspect we still will have some
economic challenges ahead.

Anyway, the subject is borderline OT. We all know that MCFL is for
the posting of Google blogpot spam, Rod Speed Screeds, and offers from
Pakistan.

This is certainly a standard, old question but I figure I'd ask
anyway:

I've got a little (app. 900 sf) 2-bedroom 1-story house, insulated
reasonably well - when I'm in I keep the thermostat at 82 degrees and
with a fan in the room it's comfortable. When I leave for my 9-to-5
job I bump the therm. up to 85, but at these temperatures the a/c is
still going quite a bit in my absence (the place is certainly
comfortable when I step back in, but it would be after a 20-mile
commute).
Is it more efficient to just shut the a/c off when I'm gone - does it
take a lot of energy to bring the temp back down from a standing
start, as it were?

Have you considered a programmable thermostat? Easy to install, very
convenient (makes the temp changes for you) and tends to pay for
themselves within months. They even have models that adjust
differently on the weekend vs. weekdays.

You can optimize energy usage by perhaps setting the temp to 82 about
an hour before you get home & set it for 85-90 about the time you
leave for work. With some models, you can fine tune the temp several
times/day, perhaps bumping it up a degree or two after you fall asleep,
dropping it a degree or two just prior to waking up, etc.

To answer your question, it does take significant energy to recool the
home, but it will typically be less overall vs. maintaining a
temperature. The savings depends how long the higher temp is maintained
as the cost to cool will essentially offset the savings (for all
practical purposes) while the unit is off as the temp is increasing.
The savings is primarily due to less energy maintaining at 90F vs. 82F,
not the warm up portion..

The same advantages can be realized with heating, provided you are not
using electrical (resistance) type heating as typical backup for heat
pumps.

It takes a lot of energy, but you save more energy. Every bit of extra
energy it takes to bring down the temperature is equally offset by energy
saved when the temperature is rising and the A/C unit is sitting idle.

The only real disadvantage is the inconvenience of having to wait for it
to finish bringing the temperature down when you get home. That can
take hours in some cases, and the cost savings of turning it completely
off (as opposed to just changing the set point to 85F) might not be
enough to justify it.

Shut it off. If you are gone for work at least 9 hours a day I would
have to say that it's costing you far more money to keep it running for
those extra 9 hours than any extra load on the system to get the home
back to a reasonable temperature when you return and start it. (It sure
won't take 9 hours to get the temperature and humidity levels back to a
comfortable range.) The compressor might have to run more initially when
you return, but while you are away the fan is running constantly and
eating up dollars in energy expenditure, even if the compressor is only
cycling slightly less when you aren't there.

The sure way to tell is try it both ways for a month and compare your
electric bills. But I'd bet the farm it's costing you far more to run it
an extra 9 hours a day when you aren't there.

Rick

Our Kodak Easyshare C315 digital camera died during our recent vacation.
It cost about $100, and was just over a year old. When I turn it on now,
there is a red LED on the front that will blink for a while, then it just
stays on. No signs of life from the color LCD screen. I've removed the SD
card, put in fresh batteries, and even opened up the unit and tried blowing
dust out of the main control on the top. Nothing makes any difference.

My big question is this: is it worth taking this sort of thing to a repair
shop, or would I be better off finding another $100 digital camera?

I was not responsible for Robert having to "shut down" his monitoring
business. That belongs to the great State of Florida. I notice that
"Alarm Relay" provides no information about licensing (in some states
the central station as well as the staff are required to have
licensing). There's more information here:

Besides the OP was looking for a cheap *local* solution. He's obviously
not interested in a security system if he's looking for something he can
shut off with a circuit breaker (and that obviously won't work in the
absence of power).

Sure, but they are still expensive to run. Dehumidifiers havn't climbed
on the "Energy Star bandwagon" yet. Even with tweaking the control on
ours all the time to make sure it isn't running more than it needs to,
it can still jump our electric bill by about 1/3 during the summer
months. I think the point the OP was making was would it still work
enough if he only had it turned on four times a day rather than letting
it do it's own thing being plugged in 24/7.

Or if you drive an old vehicle that is not worth
anything and the window leaks anyway, then you look
at it a little different :-) But if you have a nice
car, then you'd best get it fixed professionally
right away :-)
