Hmmm, could have been some other truck that did the damage. I'm
trying to visualize the forces involved. I couldn't do that with a
backhoe, which has a large weight per wheel and a lot of torque. I
agree with filing a police report.

A couple of bottle jacks and an afternoon of labor might reset the
concrete. Making the soil underneath the concrete wet could encourage
things to settle.

When doing spike strips for wayward vehicles, drive the spikes through
a 2x4 and the cover the exposed spike ends with foam insulation so
that no spike end is exposed. Bury the strip in the affected area.
When a vehicle passes over, the weight will crush the foam and allow
the spike to penetrate (remember that truck tires are very thick).
Whan a person walks over it, nothing will happen. I've never done
this and take no responsibility for your taking my joke literally.
(And now that green slime seems ubiquitous, strip metal might work
better.)

It would help tp know if the neighbors saw anything. Heavy trucks in
a residential neighborhood usually attract attention.

One "fence" described to me consisted of 4" stainless pipe 10' long
set 6' into the ground, with 1/2" aircraft cable strung between the
posts. Reportedly was effective at stopping cars from sliding into
a yard.

A 4 litre jug of blue windshield washer costs $9.88. A few shelves
away is methyl hydrate at $4.88 a 4 litre jug. Windshield washer is
mainly a solution of methyl hydrate (methanol) added to water to
prevent the water from freezing. My solution is to buy the methyl
hydrate and mix 1 liter of it with 3 litres of water to make
windshield washer. There is some of my mixture left in the bottle.
Its kept in the trunk. If it doesn't freeze I've got the mixture
right. If it does I'll mix another batch of 50:50 alcohol water. And
so on. Even 100 per cent methyl hydrate is still chaper than
windshield washer. I don't like the idea of 100 per cent alcohol
though as it is flammable.

That's not the law.
The law is if the DAMAGE is over 750 dollars, both parties must file.
I said so in the first post.

THe problem is how to ASSESS what the damage is.
I've assessed it at 100 dollars (that's what it cost anyway).
Yet, the repair was substandard.
So, who gets to assess the damage?
What if I assess the damage at 700 dollars and the other party assesses the
damage at 800 dollars?
And, it is the total damage or just the damage to one vehicle?

See what I mean?
Nobody yet I've ever met understands the implications, not the DMV, not the
police (neither of whom I trust) and not anyone I've spoken to (all of whom
I trust).

Does ANYBODY know the California law (you certainly don't & neither do I)?

Why doesn't someone on alt.law-enforcement.traffic respond?

Not a problem. Take it to a body shop and get an estimate.

If you want legal advice or opinion and nobody is offering it to you for
free, then why not hire a lawyer? That's what they do, after all.

Alternatively, why not go to the State of California's web site and read
through the relevant parts of the code?

Both of those would be a lot more effective than cross-posting to

You might be able to do almost as well using a non-contact thermometer.
Go out on a cold night and scan the likely places, like around windows
and doors. It's slower but works on the same principle.

Okay- a quick Google shows entry-level models of those start at around a
hundred bucks. Cute, but kind of steep for a one-time-use tool.

As to enlisting the FD- yeah, the multiple departments around here do
have thermal cameras, but they are the kind for spotting warm bodies
through smoke.(Donated by the local insurance companies.) Not much use
for spotting 70-degree hot spots against a 30? 40? degree background.
Not to mention, they are all understaffed and underfunded, since all the
local governmental units refuse to do the logical thing and combine them
into a metro department and cut out the duplication. They don't have the
spare manhours for non-fire related residential field trips.

I wonder if tool rental places have ever considered adding thermal
cameras to their library? Kinda hi-tech for most DIYs to use, I guess,
not to mention fragile and expensive...

Some digital cameras and webcams already respond to IR.

There are various instructions around on how to convert them into IR cameras.

Just because they demand something doesn't mean you have to give it.
You could probably just fill in any sequence of numbers.

It's like when the supermarket wants your birthday, 12/07/1941 seems
like a nice easy to remember date.

I'll second that fios suggestion. Verizon deployed fios around here
a few summers ago and Comcast is running scared. They have lowered
their prices and upgraded their speeds to try and match Verizon's.

One tip; Before signing up with Verizon, get a free Yahoo e-mail.
Then when you sign up, get the yahoo/verizon package. Your free
e-mail will be upgraded to priemium service and you will also get
other Yahoo services (like flickr) at priemium levels at no extra cost.

Oh, but skip the Verizon phone service. It costs too much. fios
is the same price with or without phone service.

Does fios actually work? I've heard rumors that they've had
all kinds of problems with the technology and aren't even
selling it anymore.

I remember when Radio Shack used to ask for a phone number. If they
insisted I gave the 415-555-1212.
My two grocery cards both have 415-123-4567.
The only card that has my real name and address is the race track
because they mail out freebies and promos.

Could be capacity issues rather than a flaw in the technology
itself. When Time-Warner first installed cable modems in the
area, the popularity grew so quickly that they had to keep
upgrading it every couple months as the segments got overcrowded
and speeds dropped. They'd upgrade it and it'd be fast again,
then get slow again as more and more people signed on. Finally,
after a year or two either growth dropped to a slower rate, or
they learned how to scale up capacity fast enough, and all the
growing pains went away.

Then fast forward to when they first offered telephone service
over the cable lines. Similar problems happened, except that
instead of internet slowness, it was "all circuits busy" messages
or never-ending ringing when someone tried to call you. Then
after about a year, those capacity problems went away too.

Hi

We are considering buying a second side by side refrigerator/freezer
to take advantage of meat/fish/frozen veggies sales.
Also wife needs more fridge room.
I have calculated that it could pay for itself in 1 year(Including
electricity) as we can't take advantage of grocerie store sales right
now as we would want to.
Example chicken cutlets most of the time regular at $4.99 lb but they
do go on sale for $1.99 lb but we can't stock up.
To buy 30 lb of these would roughly be $150 at $4.99 lb and $60 at
$1.99 lb, that is a saving of $90 just on that.
A month ago the wife came home with packages of salmon on sale for
$1.99 lb regular was $8.99 lb, she bought 4 packages but she would
have stocked up if we had the freezer.
Frozen veggies do go on sale too.
We are looking at a Maytag, energy efficient with ice maker, 26 cub
feet.
Does anyone here do that and what has your experience/savings been?

Thanks a lot

Patrick

That makes sense. Particularly since you have a reputation to know
these things!

I'm not quite sure what to make of that. On the surface it sounds
like a government agency is doing it's job. But given the overall
climate of mission change these last years I wonder what the real reason is.

True. However Tugzip (which has full support of Zip, 7-zip, etc)
includes unrar support. And you can drop in rar.exe from a rar
installation and get compression support. The shareware WinRAR will
work, and it won't give any nag screens. Of course this is all
strictly hypothetical since using any part of WinRAR past the 30 day
trial is against the agreement.

When I hear that you can't ever get a straight answer about price from
someone, I tend to think that means the price is negotiate. Sure, it
might just be that you can't get an answer because their customer service
is a pain in all areas, but it might also be that they are playing a
pricing game with you. Or to put it another way, they won't tell you
the price because are participating in setting the price.

The good news is, maybe you can look at this as more of an opportunity
than an annoyance. If they are playing pricing games, it means you
can possibly turn the tables, take control of the process, and get them
to lower your price.

I managed to get this to happen with my cable company (Time-Warner).
I had been paying $140 for a package with digital cable TV, internet,
and phone with unlimited long distance. I was planning to go 100%
cell phone, so I called them up and simply said I wanted to drop the
phone part of my service. They decided to try for a "save", and they
offered me the exact same services for $122. I took it.

In your case, I'd be tempted to research the competition for internet
service. DSL is probably about $20/month, so I'd find out how much
it really is, then call the cable company and tell them you want to
shut off your entire service (since you don't care that much about the
analog cable TV part). I bet they will give a straight answer at
that point. ;-)

I tried to look into that, but found the phone companies at least
equally deceptive. I could neither get an actual price, nor how much
bandwidth I would get. They'll happily quote you "a" price, but it
doesn't include a million different taxes and fees, or even the ISP
service you might have to buy over the DSL line itself, and it requires
you have home phone service from them (which I don't - Vonage). Even
finding the regular monthly rate after the teaser expires can be almost
impossible. The phone company's own website wanted my SSN before
quoting a price! Yes, they demanded my SSN.

Several months ago this was about $60.

What I get is that if you are obsessed about survival, it makes
a hell of a lot more sense to ensure you have an adequate supply
of what deals with intestinal parasites MUCH more effectively than
that crap above than it ever does using that crap above instead.

I didnt say it does work, I said it makes no sense to use
kerosene TODAY when the alternatives work so much better
and are readily available, even if you are in Gauntano etc.

I'm pretty sure nobody was promoting it's use... The original question was
aswered as to who, what, when, where, why, etc... Thread is dead as far as
I'm concerned - and it was my original post. <G>

Why would it be relevant?? Because if they didn't know then telling them
would be a better solution than lying as they would not be so inclined
to pass on false information to other customers.

If you are saying that one lie justifies another, then do you have any
problem with Argos's actions in Martin's scenario above??

If Argos are acting in ignorance of their obligations or pretending to
be ignorant, surely invoking ones rights is a better and more honourable
course of action than lying.

Is this a fair practice? Arab-owned and Asian Indian-owned food marker
dealers are purchasing sufficient quantities, of food items from
discount srores as Aldi and Save A Lot, and
stocking them in their own stores with a boost in price? Then they
expect cusromers to buy them along with Name Brand items (which are
also higher in price but that is understood.).

Unfortunately, Walmart does the same thing - they buy goods, mark up
the price and then sell them along side name brand goods.

Come to think of it, Home Depot, Sears, Target, Staples and Gap do the
same unfair practice of marking up the price on goods they buy.

What businesses sell items every day at their own cost?

What stops the customers from going to Aldi or Save A Lot?

That is not scalping.

Scalping is when someone corners the market on something and charges
many times the original purchase price.

Mark-up is when someone buys goods and resells them at a higher price
sufficient to make a reasonable profit.

All stores engage in mark-up. It has nothing to do with ethnicity.

This is a *SURVIVAL* manual. What part of that don't you get?

They didn't put this stuff in there if it was bull. The kerosene remedy
was supposedly used in WWII POW camps for tapeworms when the POWs

It will be about $10/month more than the current Internet portion of your

Just call Comcast's customer service during the week and ask. The last
time I asked, it was cheaper to keep basic TV service and Internet
service than to go with only Internet service.

I noticed that also, that websites like Comcast and ATT Wireless are
organized to guide you to whatever services they're promoting, and
not to comprehensive pricing information about all the choices available.

Given that it's so difficult to find the things you want on their websites,
I agree that it's best to call them on the phone and ask.

fyi: In the above video the IR inspection company

RAZIR (Sierra Pacific Innovations) FLIR camera

I saw this particular FLIR camera priced
at 12,499.00 USD by this one particular
instrumentation company and they were
also charging 145.00 usd for a spare battery!

Fluke Ti20 at 6495 USD was less expensive but
its does not do all the fancy things that the RAZIR
does ( the RAZIR connect to your laptop with a USB
port)

Not stopping the magnetic field but cancelling it. The closer the wires
are together the shorter the distance before it's field is cancelled by
an opposing field. Much as the reason why twisted pairs are used in data
lines (to prevent induced voltages from outside fields).

Newer PTC electric blankets have very low magnetic fields, but I do not
know what the actual standards are on current blankets. I had thought
reduced fields were mandated (in the US) but I can't find evidence of that.

I understand that, but I was nit-picking over the choice of words. The field is
strongest close in , but it extends out forever. It might make sense to talk about
the distance at which the field falls below ambient intensity, but the word
"penetrate" is somewhat misleading IMO.

From what I read in IEEE Explorer, PTC does work well to cancel fields,
but one of the federal regulating agencies won't approve its use in blankets
because there's a potential for higher leakage current.

Why would that be at all relevant? They are acting as a representative of
their company, and if their company has told them to say it, and they say
it, why would it matter what they thought?

Not easy to find, but a recent reply from a regular to the same
question on uk.d-i-y said he used to work for them, and the odds are
if you're over 30, it'll last longer than you.

If you hunt around a bit, you can get them for about £180 IIRC.
