But most modern TVs don't have a keypad or any means of directly
changing channels more than one up-or-down at a time. Without a remote
control, changing from, say, Channel 13 to Channel 107 would be quite
unpleasant.

Not to mention the other features that exist only in the remote. Life
used to be simpler.
