The suggestions you are getting are good ones.

You need some kind of dessicant to control moisture.

A small safe like the one you have is likely a fire safe...and it has
gypsum in its walls that has water chemically locked in it that will
protect the contents if a fire would occur. It is natural for the
interior of the safe to be at a somewhat higher humidity than the
outside.

Just because they don't take any responsibility for dealing with
criminals doesn't mean they can't do anything. You, as a lone voice
crying out in the darkness, might not get heard but if you band
together with similarly pissed off people then perhaps they would
do something.

I see no reason why China should be able to damage the Internet in
the United States without our government getting involved. Isn't
one of the reasons you have a government is to help protect you
against threats from other countries?

Well, I dialed the number whaa_hoo provided. The URL whaa_hoo provided
says my rebate has been approved and will be mailed about October 12.

Today an AT&T representative phoned to respond to my August letter to
the Attorney General. She said I didn't qualify because it's limited
customers who already had Bellsouth dialup service.

I said the phrase in their Terms and Conditions, "subscribers of AT&T or
BellSouth Dial service," has meant telephone customers for a hundred
years. I said a service accessed by a telephone line, such as internet
access, is a dial-up.

She said I was wrong. Telephone service is not "dial service." She
said she'd never heard telephone service called anything but POTS. Then
she said as a special one-time courtesy my next bill would be credited
with the rebate.

Patents may be the best place to check terminology because patent
lawyers are supposed to get it right. From 1879 to 2007, 579 patents
have called telephone customers subscribers. From 1941 to 2004, 67
patents have called telephone customers "dial service subscribers."
(Perhaps before 1941 telephone service would also accommodate phones
without dials.)

I've found 162 patents calling internet service "dial-up service" and
none calling it "dial service." I've found patents referring to
telephone subscribers with internet access and customers who use the
internet to access subscribed content, but I haven't found any patents
about subscribers to internet access.

That makes sense as a subscriber signs up for published content, not
communications. Telephone customers would be exceptions because the
service includes a subscription to a phone book.

It seems to me the AT&T representative told me I was excluded from the
rebate because they interpret their Terms and Conditions according to
their slang, which may change from day to day, and not the established
meanings of "subscribers" and "dial service."

Happened to me - I was asked to turn in my keys and leave immediately.
NEVER give an employer any indication you intend to leave a position, no
matter how good you think your intentions may be. You'd be surprised at
which bosses - who you think you know - will screw you in a split
second.

Good point. Don't hold out for too much.
Try selling the thread you started about thinking you would find a
free refill for the garage sale fire extinguisher and how the fire
department laughed at you. I think your writing could have potential
as long as you "keep it real" and talk about your own life honestly.

On long flights I like to take along an MP3 player. Mine has an
FM tuner built-in and sometimes I'll listen to the various stations
you can tune in at 20-30K feet. Also noise-canceling headphones
are nice to get rid of the constant engine drone, whether or not you're
actually listening to anything.

One other thing, when I'm not reading, I find I'm a lot more comfortable
if I wear sunglasses to eliminate all the UV glare at high altitude. Apparently
cataracts are an occupational hazard for pilots.

Regarding the comments on Newark Airport. The NY Transit/Amtrak
connection is also helpful if your final destination is in Jersey. On my
last trip the cab fare would have been $61 plus round trip toll (about
$5)plus tip. NJ Transit was under $10.
Also Newark airport is much closer to midtown Manhattan than JFK, The
one drawback is if to take a cab between NJ and NY you have to pay
double the meter to cover the fact cabs from one state can not pick up
fares in another state Or, in most cases, from another city in the same
state..
If you do take a cab Newark has a smart system. You tell the
dispatcher your destination and they print out a two part for,. The flat
rate fare is in big numbers as are the words "plus round trip tolls".
You get one copy, the driver the other hence no disputes.

No..always, always haggle.

It always depends on the car model, the seller and the particular
incident.

Some times companies have so many cars, offer a good pricing for a
short period of time, have a slow mover, transferrable warranties,
etc. that the new price equals or is lower than that of an used price.

Sorry...there is no easy way short of doing your homework each and
every time.

One rule of thumb that does work is that the more people who have had
to profit from the car means a higher price...in other words buying
from a dealer rather from the ORIGINAL owner will cost more...each
needs a bit of the action.

I say ORIGINAL owner because many people buy and sell used cars that
are not their own...they are just "dealers" working around the tax
man.

ORDER?!? Try printing your own!!

There are several very good check-printing programs out there, most
notably VersaCheck, which offers both personal and business check
printing. I've used it (and another, lower-priced one) for years, and
never had a check refused or not go thru.

Legally, tho, you can write a check on a table napkin with a crayon and,
if your bank will accept it, it is legal tender.

Of course, I live by my debit card and online banking with bill paying.
The only check I write much any more is for my rent, which I HAND-
DELIVER to be sure they get it on time and can't claim otherwise.

You can get all that (10 SATA data cables and 10 molex-to-dual-SATA power
splitter cables) at newegg.com for $48.85 including 3-day shipping. Item
numbers N82E16812104059 and N82E16812119010.

outletpc.com, which I'd never heard of before I saw their ad just now,
seems to be able to do it for $28.78 including shipping. They maybe great
or they may be horrible, who knows.

Personally, we've been using "Checks in the Mail" for about 8 years and
have never had any problem with them. The web address is:

Wal-Mart does check printing. We have been using their service for the
past couple of years and didn't have any problems.

If your landlord has a name and postal mailing address, most banks
with online bill-payment will simply print and mail a paper check
to him.

Some landlords, of course, may not like that, either. One place
I used to live, the landlord insisted that I leave the paper
check in his mailbox on the first of the month. (according to
my lease, while it was *due* on the first, I had like 9 days
to get it to him before it was considered late - but if it
was not in his mailbox on the first, he'd start calling me
each day. Annoying as hell and, IMO, rather petty on his part).

Anyway, I've got at least three or four bills that I pay
via my bank's online payment deal where they cut a paper
check and mail it. Nice - no cost to me - no printing
of checks, no buying of stamps, nada.

FWIW2, I've used Checks in the Mail in the past to have
checks printed and never had a problem at all. Reasonable
price, surprisingly fast turnaround.

Interesting!

Can you do this thru any local Walmart store?

Or is it online only?

I'm wondering if I could place and order and pick it up
at local super Walmart to save shipping costs?

I know that they offer various sized Goldenrods, but I doubt that
there is one that small. You might do some googling though.

With that size, you are probably better off using the silica gel
packs. (Just remember, as tempting as it may be -- DON'T EAT! :-)

It depends on how you cook the spam. I prefer some barbeque sauce and
onions and fry it. Not sure if I heard of spam killing anyone though.

You can avoid worthless content on a TV by never tuning to worthless
channels.

A killfile gives you similar control over newsgroups. For example,
killfile everything from the top newsgroup spam source--Google
Groups--and that spam won't be visible. How to do that depends on your
newsreader. Outlook might not be able to do it. Certainly there are
plenty of free news clients that can.

I bought two, after going through the re-pairing excerise a couple of
times. I have a pocket sized headset for cellular, and a larger headset
for PC. Plantronics touts their ability to switch seamlessly.

I was using it as my home phone replacement, so with unlimited LD it was
cheaper than the basic landline.

I wonder if that's behind the T-Mobile "hotspot@home" signup. There's
something about pre-authorized hotspots. The Netgear page mentions some
ISP roaming standard.

> Skype's improved quite a bit in the connection to POTS department, IMO.

I expected that with the eBay involvement. At least they would be
US-centric. I have had Skype-out calls arrive at my home from Australia
and Germany in the last couple of days that sounded good, undetectable from
"being there". i should just cough up a few bucks and try it again.

A piece of software on the PC, or a standalone ATA... same-o.
Some of the other Skype WiFi phones are not self contained, and have a
widget to plug in. I plugged my "real" phones into the Callvantage ATA.
I don't mind it being PC-only. The WiFi phone might be less handy. I'd
carry more junk when I had the laptop already.

I didn't see that with Callvantage. I think it was even answered as a FAQ
with "because that's the way it is" or words to that effect.

That's just bad hardware design. There's no excuse for frying
telco-certified parts at telco-certified line voltages. Once upon a time,
I did some work where our gadget sat inline with telco, and we routed LD
calls, and let the local calls go through. We weren't trying to drive
volts out the same connector, but still. Nothing fried if you hooked it up
backwards. The ATA should be able to detect line voltage, and post a red
blinking error message on the management page.

Sadly, I think you won't get that- I suspect advetising is the single
largest expense with the big guys like Vonage and CallVantage.

Absolutely.

No- the T-Mo service isn't really VoIP in the tradtional sense- it's
more like "GoIP"- the actual GSM packets are delivered via the
internet instead of over the air, which is why you can seamlessly
sWitch between WiFi and cellular mid-call.

> The Netgear page mentions some

The T-Mo service has the same problem as the Skype phones- no way to
authenticate with a browser- you can put in a WEP/WPA key, but that's
about it.

If you're going to lug the laptop around, why not? It's cheap
enough, and it works pretty well. If you have a PocketPC or Symbian-
based phone you can even use Skype from them.

For traveling, no problem. For home landline replacement I'd rather
nothave it PC-based, all else being equal.

Depends on what model ATA they use, orif they allow you to access the
settings. They might "lock" customers out of it to prevent them from
screwing things up.

Agreed, but many VoIP ATAs look like something hobbled together off
the parts wall at a RadioShack! ;-)

Agreed!

Take care!

Yes. T-Mobile HotSpot customers can roam on several other companies'
WiFI networks. The charges vary (some are per-minute or per-hour,
some per-day). This is useful when you're stuck in a place that does not have
T-Mo HotSpot service (like an airport waiting for a layover).

You are so out of touch with what is going on in China that the only
cure is for you to pay a visit there. You are free to travel anywhere
within China (Tibet requires an easily obtainable permit) and no one
gives a damn that you are there. That is you can see and ask anyone
anything you like. The cost of everything there is at almost giveaway
prices that a 1000 dollar budget will make you spend like a
millionaire.

Unemployment and underemployment is an endemic problem. Even a
university graduate is lucky to get a job as a security guard at 800
Yuan a month, the equivalent of just over USD 100. A mid management
job pays just around 300 to 500 dollars a month. In the countryside
the income is much less. That is why the peasants are streaming into
the cities by the tens of millions to find work. This option is not
available to most of the older peasants as they have to maintain their
farms and families. These stay at homes number in the hundreds of
millions since some 80 percent of China's 1.3 billions still live in
the countryside.

On this apple thingy, do give your theory on how China managed to grow
from nothing to its domination in so short a time. That's the OP's
question I tried to answer. He and I am certainly very interested in
another explanation.

Does it look like the previous owner cleaned his furnace every year?
If not then you don't need to either. If it looks dirty enough its
quite easy to shut it off and clean it yourself unless you consider
$200 worth not having to do it yourself.

I always kept my own 30 year old gas furnace clean myself. It looks
as new as the day I had built the house. I asked the gas company to
inspect the heat exchanger tubes and innards two years ago and he said
everything is in pretty good condition.

I've been trying to use DVDFlick 1.2.2.1 bluild 442 and Roxio Build:
2.4.32b to create a DVD from some of the Star Trek: Hidden Frontier
files after downloading them in Apple Quicktime (.mov) format.

I've tried creating merging a couple of the shorter episodes into one
iso file with one chapter per video source, and also tried putting a
longer one one with one chapter every ten minutes. In both cases
I get a iso that autoplays when I open it with VLC media player.
Clicking on the VLC media player menu button does nothing and
the playlist only shows one file.

If I burn the iso file to a DVD using Roxio, it does the same thing.

What's up with that? Do other users here get better results?

I'm running Win XP Pro, if that makes a difference.

You need to setup a proper menu with the two
separate episodes as separate entrys in the menu.

I do only holiday travel and the last thing I want is to be tied to a
computer. Its delicate and a theft bait. I don't need the
aggravation. I don't carry any road warrior stuff like a cellphone,
iPod or stuff like that. Its a holiday free from everything.

I always pick an aisle seat so that I can stretch my legs and one
elbow space doesn't have to be restricted by the next passenger. The
seat row by the emergency exit is even better as it has more leg room.
I also prefer the aisle seat on the right row of seats as I am more
comfortable leaning my head to the left when I sleep. I bring my own
pillow and its really wonderful to be able to sleep comfortably on
long flights or even on airport seats in between a long wait for the
connecting flight. Having a good thick book I always wanted to read
helps. I make a quick spin around the waiting area for newspapers
left behind and they're good for an hour or two reading the local
news and doing the crosswords.

I am lucky in having flexible mealtimes and can comfortably endure 36
hours without a meal. Whenever the refreshment cart comes around I
always ask for two servings of orange juice. This keeps me hydrated.
The sugar and orange pulp is enough to take care of any need to eat
food. Pop doesn't do it. I have food sensitivities and avoid the
usual airport cafeteria foods as much as possible. I avoid bringing
personal snacks as they only set the hunger juices flowing without
being able to satisfy it.

I try to use the airport to downtown bus service first and come back
the same way. Taxi from downtown to the hotel is a lot cheaper. I
travel light with no more luggage than I can carry comfortably with
one or both hands. If I buy stuff on my travels I buy a cheap gym bag
to carry them in.

This only lends more support to my contention that this is an article
to get you to the dealers to BUY another car.

They are taking an exception to the rule and trying to use it to
motivate the reader to act.

No. You need to read the disk manufacturer's TOC with special ID
programs, and that'll give you the country of origin and which
specific plant the batch of disks came from. Plants are generic,
which means they'll sell their discs to somebody to brand them as they
see fit. Somebody can mean more or less according to their standards.
You have to find out of the batch process is a good one, to go deeper,
types of dyes employed and overall quality. There are trackers -
sites with people doing that sort of thing from surveys and
tabulations for consistent media quality. Among somebody, Taiyo Yuden
used to be a better name for expected quality, last I checked. A
player/writer is no less important. One that doesn't work with good
discs or whose manufacturer doesn't consider its customers for future
media compatibility is effectively cutting its own throat. Don't know
if NEC got back on the boat, but last player (after several NEC 34/35-
series) I bought was a LG model.

Don't know, but don't buy the store junk brand especially from Fry's junk
GQ(Great Quality) media. Great for hanging on fruit trees to scare off the
birds though. Stick with known quality brands. Check out Google -some prefer
one brand over the other, maybe someone put out a table too. My experience
is a good burner is just as important as the media as it solves much of the
bad burns.

Unlike the retail movies and music which can last for decades, DVD and CD
blanks don't last long due to "rot" and delamination/oxidation - maybe 5
years.

Most tests prefer Taiyo Yuden with Verbatim coming in a close second.
Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim (Mitsubishi Chemical Company) make there own
DVDs while most others (Sony, Maxell, HP, etc) merely contract them
out.

Why not do that? Being honest with an employer is almost always the best
policy.

I would go for option 2, but your employer might force option 3 upon
you. There's another option that might or might not be worth persuing.
See if you can take those courses at another school in the evening or
weekends.

I think you should just talk with your manager about your plans, but
don't reveal any more information than is absolutely necessary. You
might also benefit by reading a book that you can buy at any major
bookstore. The book is called "What Color is Your Parachute" and its
updated annually. This book, written by Richard Bolles, is geared toward
career changers and first time job seekers. When I was studying for
final exams in college for my senior year, my advisor strongly urged me
to read that book, and he was absolutely right. You should read it too.
Fortunately, its not expensive.

I have seen that in action with typical megacorp thinking (its only our
way or our way). I worked with a guy who announced that he was going to
work for another company that was not a competitor and that he would
stay on for a couple weeks to insure an orderly transition of his
projects. They called security and had him escorted out of the building.

I can't even get our ISP (Time Warner) to filter obvious nasty spam coming
through the email. Even when sent headers etc. they do nothing. I've blocked
most of the emails, but just haven't taken the time to write all the filters
for news.

Bagging has been used in America and Japan for sometime. I really
think the bagging of fruit witnessed in the documentary might have
been one of the organic farms that cater to China's elite and
political leaders. With literally millions of individual farmers in
China growing apples, most of them small farmers, I find it hard to
believe that they have access to an "idle" work force to grow apples
in such a manner.

I need about 10 SATA data cables and 10 SATA power adapter cables. (the
ones that let you use existing molex power connectors from the PS)

Several of my friends and myself would like to take advantage of some of
the OEM SATA drive deals we've seen being offered, but we currently don't
have the data cables or power cables we would need. Obviously, we don't
want to pay the extra $15 or so that is asked for the retail box version
that has this, plus software on a disk we also don't want.

I recently upgraded the mboard on one of my Dad's PC's, and the
motherboard came with a twin pack of these cables - one data, and one power
adapter cable.

I can't imagine that these should really cost much more than a dollar
each, but I'm hoping to buy 10 of each for a grand total of $35. That's 20
pieces, which comes to $1.75 each, including shipping.

Anyone know where I can find such a deal? I've had a few people suggest
different sources, but best I've found is about $5 a pair. Considering that
I can find IDE cables for 70c, I would think I'd be able to find SATA stuff
for twice that or less.

In the beginning of television, we had small networks racking there
marketing brains of how to get television into millions of homes.
After many ideas, they came up with two methods:

1: Have people pay monthly for television
2: Have advertisers pay for it and give the entertainment away for
free.

Well, you know what NBC, ABC and CBS went with, and they are still
free access networks today!

The only difference between these networks and The WIN Network is that
NBC, ABC and CBS don't pay you to watch television ads...

The WIN Network does! And it is Free to it's members always!

We give it away free, we pay YOU to watch and our advertiser's pay for
it.

The average Vonage customer pays $28.38. Maybe this is a good price in
some parts of the country, if you make a lot of long-distance calls at
the ridiculous rates that AT&T charges for them. Of course you also have
to have broadband to your house, either cable, ($50/month in my area for
Comcast broadband), or DSL, at about $30 for naked DSL or $15+local
phone service.

My local phone bill is about $17/month from AT&T. $11 (Vonage price-$17)
would buy 440 minutes of long distance on a provider like OneSuite
(2.5¢.minute). How many non-business users make 440 minutes of long
distance during peak times? Complicating things further for Vonage, is
free in-network calling on most cell phone plans. within circles of
friends and relatives that call each other a lot, the tendency is to all
migrate to the same cellular provider.

Vonage is like many products and services that base their entire
business model on comparing their prices to what the most naive consumer
would pay for competing products and services. It's like the
advertisements that quote the MSRP for a product, then add the
disclaimer that the product "may never have been sold at the MSRP."

Even more ridiculous than Vonage, is Skype, but for different reasons.
The average revenue per Skype user is estimated at 12-13¢/month, because
almost no one uses it for anything other than free computer to computer
calls. Skype gets away with not providing E911 capability because they
claim that it's not a substitute for a landline. Unfortunately for eBay,
they have the data to prove that this is the case.

That'satually a goo price in MANY pats the country.

I don't think anyone is suggesting that broadband+Vonage is cheaper
than POTS alone, only that if you're going to pay for broadband anyway,
you canvleverage it with VoIP for a little savings.

> My local phone bill is about $17/month from AT&T. $11 (Vonage price-

re you including all of the fees in that $17? My local seevice from
Qwest (Denver) is "only" $24.99, but that's before taxes (about $4)
and fees (about a buck for E911 and $6 for "interconnect fees")
bringing me to $36-37. Vonage is $25/month (the "average revenue per
customer" has no meaning in this discussion since we're not using the
"avearge" landline customer to compare them to.) and only has a
couple of bucks in taxes.

> would buy 440 minutes of long distance on a provider like OneSuite

Not the issue- you have far cheaper POTS services available to you
than most of us do- clearly a $25 VoIP isn't competitive THERE. Even
Qwest @ $36 is a vacation compared to the rural phone company I had
in Missouri- I paid over $50/month for LOCAL service with what is now
Embarq (Sprint/Union Telephone when I was there.)

Add to that a couple of bucks for LD service (the monthly fee for my
LD service before I make my first call) has risen from $0.99 to over
$3/month, bringing my "local" service to about $40.

I'm surethat's a powerful marketing tool for many, but I've never
once in 20 years with cellphones, ever based my carrier choice based
on friend's or family's network.

True, but Vonage is the li
e the AOL of VoIP- it's "VoIP for Dummies;" glossy brochures,
preconfigured hardware, you can buy it in stores- it Commands it's
price based on ease and convenience. Other VoIPs are cheaper, but
lack the capital and infrastrucre Vonage has (ok, had!) ;-)

Other than Larry, no one considers Skype as a VoIP player- they're
really a glorified IM program on steroids.

Perhaps, though if you're paying for broadband anyway, Voicestick is a
better deal than Vonage, and is likely to be around longer since they
seem to have a business plan that doesn't rely on massive advertising
with annoying background sounds. Voicestick also has some features than
Vonage lacks.

Actually, I probably could run Vonage or Voicestick over our free
community wireless network, if it'd work at only 1Mb/s, but the
reliability is a big factor.

Someone mention rice works too. If really frugal, you could eat it or make a

Just curious - does anyone know the going rate these days for doing
freelance writing for magazines?

For 6 years, I had a monthly software and peripherals review column in a
computer focused magazine. I also did freelance work for a newspaper.
However, then I became a stay at home Dad when we had two kids within 12
months.

I can't really compare to what I made before, because both of those were
"get your foot in the door to get some experience" sort of jobs. One was
also for a nonprofit group. Like I said, I got a lot of experience, a free
Internet connection for a few years, and some $. Hopefully this time
around, I can get more of the latter.

Now that they are finally both out of diapers, and I have made some
progress on fixing up our double, I'd like to devote some time to writing
again.

However, I have no idea what a fair rate is these days. I don't want to
hold out for too much, and lose work, but I also don't want to be getting
less than the other folks. I'd like to put most of what I make into my ROTH
IRA, which is sorely underfunded at this point.

Anyone have a general idea?

I do this. I read about it on another forum on usenet. Thought it
looked interesting. Techincally it is a loan, but I look at it like
a donation. When my loan is repaid I reloan it to another person on
the site.
Dawn, who thinks it is a frugal use of her charitable donation money
as all of the money is used for its intended purpose.
