Your gross income minus all savings will give you total annual
expenses that include taxes, donations, pet maintenance, and
everything.

Divide that amount by the number of people in the family and divide
that by 365 and that gives your daily expense.

Calculating how much you really need depends on yourself alone. (That
should be apparent with all the responses in this thread.)

In your case it is limited to sales tax. For obvious reasons income
and property taxes do not apply to you.

According to Faux News & the Rush sheep, only the wealthy pay taxes.

Yes, optometrists are professionally bound to check your fit. They are not
in the business of selling eyeglasses or profiting from their sale. Kind
of like how medical doctors don't sell drugs or care where you get your
prescription filled. Think about why it has to be that way, ethically and
professionally.

True, but I get my eyes checked by an opthalmologist for a number of
reasons. She (and her office) aren't that easy to access.

As everyone knows, the USA has a lot of weight to lose. Most of it
stems from the fast food society, a culture that we seem bent on
exporting throughout the world. This does no one any good.

I think it is a SHAM the way that certain fast food corporations treat
the consumer who is trying to eat healthy. Let's use Quizno's as an
example of what I mean here.

I'm sure you've been to one of these restaurants. It's basically a
Subway with a toaster in the middle, and the sandwiches taste
relatively good although they have been criticized for the excessive
calories and fat count in most of their sandwiches. And, of course, it
goes without saying that they really push their side orders of chips
and large soda drinks as well.

But I personally never felt bad about Quizno's until their recent
round of advertising. They are now pushing a flatbread sandwich they
call the "Sammie." Have you seen these ads? The photographs are
guaranteed to get you into their franchises, especially if you are
watching calories and trying to eat healthy. There's a photo in your
Sunday paper of a Sammie Grilled Chicken Balsamic sandwich . . . the
sandwich is literally bursting at the seams, stuffed with 12 or 13
visible chunks of grilled chicken, a ton of lettuce and tomato, and
right above it -- in giant letters -- ONLY 200 CALORIES.

That, my friends, is one of the most blatant shams I've seen in a long
time.

The ad drew me into my local Quizno's franchise, where I ordered the
above sandwich and then sat there in disbelief looking at the tiny
little thing that I was served. Yes, the sandwich you GET might be
only 200 calories. The guy making the Sammie used what appeared to be
a teaspoon to dole out one level spoonful of a lettuce and tomato mix,
on top of what were 6 or 7 small bites of chicken. All of it very
carefully measured onto a tiny round piece of bread. (The sodium
content of the balsamic dressing was off the charts, giving this
little appetizer sized "meal" an overly-salty and unhealthy flavor.)

I'm a consumer advocate, so I called the 800 number on the door of my
franchise with a complaint. Oddly, the number was right below a giant
photo of the sandwich I was eating - or, I should say, the sandwich I
THOUGHT I'd be eating.

They have "never gotten a complaint about this before" according to
the Quizno's representative I spoke with. When I later spoke to the
franchise owner, he told me that he hears this same concern from
everyone, and agrees 100% with me that this is unorthodox advertising.

Looking for truly healthy and low-cal food in a fast food restaurant?
Look further than Quizno's. Those folks are false advertisers, at
best.

Wrong, it does provide a useful source of fast food.

No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to eat there.

No one is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to buy those.

Your problem.

Do the decent thing and set fire to yourself inside one of their franchises.

That'll stop them.

Only a fool wouldnt expect anything else with that many calories.

I recently read they have a new CEO who is trying to turn things
around. So far his biggest move is to limit coupons to 4 times a year
rather than almost every other week.
It seems when customers see a coupon regularly they stop going when
it is not there. He is hoping that after a few weeks they will give in.
Might work, on the other hand they might just wait, something I used to
do with Boston Market when there was one near my office.

Yep, even if they were in Australia he would never see the coupons
because he never looks at a newspaper as facts upset him.

What you described is what I find wrong with big box industrial
restaurants and really shows the power of marketing. Just keep saying
something enough and people will believe it.

I have that guy filtered out. He's always been a bit flagrant. Must
have a very boring life, eh?

Thanks William, that may explain it. I think the new CEO hired a new

A Quiznos opened near where I worked a few years ago. Co-workers would
on occasion use the coupons to get food there. They often remarked
how expensive the place was. No surprise that it closed down after
less than a year in business. Maybe the steep lease rent was what did
them in there. I just could not see spending $8 for a sandwich and
small bag of chips and drink. No way.

Thanks for the link. I see someone finally has replacement cartridges
for my Canon which has those stupid computer chips in the bottom.
Also, I wonder why Abacus's eBay prices are so much cheaper than from
their web-page!?!

They have a "private" page somewhere with lower prices... I just can't find
it until I go to the office and remember to check my bookmarks there. I
order 100-200 cartridges at a time so I'm considered a good customer I
guess. <G>

The only maintenance you should do yourself is change the filter
often. They say about once a month, but you could probably get by
with changing it once every 2 or 3 months if you run it with the fan
swith in "auto". Good filters are very important on systems with air
conditioning to prevent the a/c coil (evaporator) from getting plugged
up with dirt and lint. The cheap fiberglass filters are almost
worthless, use the pleated type. As long as you follow the above
suggestion, your evaporator coil will stay clean and you furnace will
last much longer.

If your evaporator coil is dirty, your heating repair person will need
to clean it. It really isn't something that most homeowners can do on
their own. It usually requires cutting a hole in the sheetmetal to
get access to it, and then vacumming it, blowing it out with
compressed air, and/or washing it with chemicals and water. if it is
really plugged up bad it may need to be completely removed from the
furnace and taken outside to wash with the garden hose. This would
require evacuating the refrigerant circuit and cutting the refrigerant
lines.

Like I mentioned in a post above, leave the fan swithch on the
thermostat to "on" untill the service guy can come out. This might
help get more airflow through your furnace and keep it running a
little longer before tripping on the limit switch.

Good luck.

Wool stretches, so hanging isn't that good an idea. Careful pressing
can rememdy the situation, but why do it if you don't need to?

Back in the 1950s my grandma made me a skirt out of some blue plaid
orlon+wool material. The thing was machine washed and dried countless
times with no harm and never needed pressing. This is long before the
days of permanent press. It's probably still being worn by some girl in
a third-woeld country...

Hand wash in cold water. Not warm water, not cool water, cold water. Use
detergent, not soap. Don't swish it around, don't wring it, just let it
soak, even overnight. Drain, put in clean cold water to rinse - again,
don't agitate. May need two or three rinses. Drain, and roll up in a towel
to dry - don't squeeze it or wring it.

If it was an expesive garment and you really don't want to lose it, have it
dry cleaned.

Balenciaga has the distinction of being a well-established fashion
label from before the First World War. Cristobal Balenciaga opened his
very first haute couture house in San Sebastian, Spain before going on
to open two more houses in Madrid and Barcelona. The flagship
Balenciaga store on 10 Avenue George V in Paris has been open for more
than six decades already. Christian Dior called Balenciaga, The
Couturier of Couturiers. It is no wonder that a label so steeped in
history and so highly esteemed by other designers produces such sought
after handbags.

"old used car, it cannot be considered "modern" anymore" - Hmm... "old" and
"modern". Sounds like a contradiction in terms to me.

You didn't mention efficiency, safety and reliability. Reliability has a
big effect on the useful life of a car.

No. But this works. Engineers will still tell you preventative maintenance
works. They're the ones who did the maintenance schedule... well, maybe the
sales and marketing people had some input too.

Seems to me there'd be no quieter keyboard than no keyboard - see

people.

And out of curiosity, how fast is that?

I do have air conditioning as part of this furnace setup.
I never did any maintenance on it (it's about seven or so years old).

I'd be glad to clean this AC coil; where would I find it?
Also, do you know of a good source on the web for furnace & ac maintenance
WITH PICTURES?

If you're going to try to fix this, read the troubleshooting manual.
Though newer furnaces are a PITA compared to the older ones,
it's fairly easy to locate the problem.
You said before you sucked a hose and the switch for positive venting
worked.
You didn't say if the venting motor was even starting up.
You might get help from the HVAC guys, but you have to be clear on the
steps you're taking, and exactly what's happening at start-up.
Just make sure you don't try to bypass any of the start-up features.
Very dangerous.

Yes. What is happening now is different than what at first happened.

FIRST (three blinking lights)
- The smaller motor (which, thanks to this newsgroup, I belatedly realize
is the combustion air venting motor) wasn't spinning - while the larger
motor (which by the process of elimination is the air circulation blower)
was constantly spinning. Perhaps the "limit" (which I take to be a sensor
that shuts things off when it senses something amiss) kicked in for the air
vent.

NOW (four blinking lights)
- I can get the furnace to work for an hour, two or three, but, eventually
the four blinking lights go on indicating one of the two "limits" have been
breached. The two motors (the smaller combustion venting motor and the
larger air circulation blower) remain running but the gas shuts off so the
flame goes out.

A service technician I called said it's 100 bucks to go out to see it so I
have him scheduled for Saturday (the earliest he could get here). Until
then, I want to learn what MAINTENANCE I could/should do.

Where can I get a PICTURE of the maintenance I should do until then?
Please advise!
Thanks,
Donna

I did. He'll be out here on Saturday. Isn't there ANY maintenance a
homeowner can do themselves?

I'm sure, from the symptoms, that the "limits" kicked in, probably due to
some problem with air circulation.

Besides the filter (which was very dirty but I replaced it yesterday), what
other maintenance can I do.

For example, someone said clean the A/C coils ... but WHERE ARE THEY?

The furnace is in a tiny closet. The AC fan is outside the house.

Leave it alone. Let the pro fix it.
You can ask him about what you can do with the maintenances.
Just keep your pipes from freezing until he gets there.

Probably--most sites say to avoid scrubbing, wringing, or other
stressing of the fibers.

On the other hand, people wore wool shirts long before dry cleaning--or
even washing machines--were invented, and while they may not have washed
them quite as often as we do, they must have washed them somehow.

There are two options. Wash it in cold water with Woolite and dry it flat on
a towel. Put it in the dryer with a Dryel sheet. I actually use the generic
sheets, which are cheaper and use the same formula. I'm still re-using the
original Dryel bag from when the product first came out. Since the shirt
won't be wet, it won't shrink. I do this for several sweaters which can't be
washed.

Actually, wool does not shrink - it felts, giving the impression of
shrinking -

"Wool is a natural fiber with many natural organic characteristics. It's
warmth is created by the tiny packets of air which individual wool
fibers trap naturally.

But, another characteristic of wool yields the secret of why wool
sweaters and clothing knitted from wool yarn can sometimes shrink. Two
conditions are required for wool to shrink. Water and heat. The outside
of the wool fiber is hydrophobic--hates and repels water. The inside of
the wool fiber is hydrophilic--hollow and absorbs water. Every fiber has
a love hate relationship with itself. Even though wool wants to repel
water around the fiber, at a certain point of getting wet, it reverses
its process of repelling water to absorbing water. When this happens it
brings water into it's core and holds it.

In the microscopic view, the outside of the wool fibers look like they
are made from overlapping shingles, like shingles on the roof of your
house. When wool gets wet and heat and agitation is present, wool has a
tendency to overlap and lock the shingles. Thus the impression of
shrinking is created. This is inherent in all wool fibers!!! The only
way to maintain a wool garmets size and avoid shrinking is to let it dry
in a cool area and block or stretch out the shingles when the fabric is
still wet. Dry cleaning is the surest means of cleaning without shrinking."

And Scott...how much does it cost you a day to live?

I noticed that no one has mentioned their daily costs for taxes.

Property taxes, sales taxes, income taxes...they all add up.

Doesn't anyone pay taxes?

I don't, I called a backdoor number and asked for code "walmart" to be
placed on my SSN.

Sure, but thats better than a full depression, stupid.

Nope.

Nope. Prezs dont have anything like the effect that the mindless claim they do.

> Much of the excess money in 99-00 went into speculating in a few high tech stocks

Hell of a lot more than just a few.

> and with little else to invest 03-06 cheap money, it went into housing

Utterly mangled all over again. The real effect of the cheap money was that
it allowed those who chose to borrow at something like the limits of what would
be loaned to them to buy a lot more house than they could otherwise borrow for.

> (not wanting to expand business, make stock investments nor spend freely).

Utterly mangled all over again.

Thats always the case when there is any change.

> Unfortunately, in the long run, it may simply result in a further deterioration of the dollar

Utterly mangled all over again. Not doing anything would
certainly do that if the economy is allowed to implode instead.

> / higher oil costs (the increased price of oil over the past seven years can be traced / tracked almost indirectly to

Wrong, as always. Pity that even countrys that havent seen their currency
sag like the USD has, have seen a similar problem with the cost of oil.

> The expected recession may temporarily reduce oil pricing, but could hurt it even more in the long run.

It aint about oil pricing, its about ensuring that there isnt a full depression, stupid.

Few have a clue idea about how much taxes they do pay per day.

First third of column:

Dear Miss Manners,
I have been dating a man for about five months and we get along
extremely well and are very fond of one another; in fact I think I'm
quite in love. The problem is about a question he recently asked me
that I feel was done so rudely and inappropriately. He asked me what
my net worth was.

While I am aware that financial considerations are part of what
contributes to a successful or unsuccessful relationship, I was,
understandably, stunned by the bluntness of this question! I think I
got out of it gracefully by joking that I would have to have my
accountant get back to him......

(I think you'll like MM's answer.)

Yes it does. Nothing much has changed in the design of cars over that time
with the cars that were the bleeding edge of design at the time they were built.

The only real chance since then has been the anti pollution
stuff and that doesnt have a big effect on the useful life of a car.

Particularly with european cars, they were well ahead of the crap at that time design wise.

More fool you if you use modern synthetic oils.

You posted this warning to several internet newsgroups, accusing
Emailias of stealing from its customers. Ouch! We're not sure what
this is about. We believe we offer a useful service at a fair price,
and we always respond to customer concerns.

We respect the protection of one's identity on the internet. It's at
the core of what we're about. But if you're not willing to come
forward with your issue, we can't do anything to make things right. If
you have a problem, tell us what it is and we'll get to the bottom of
